You MUST try anything from this bakery! I have introduced the cheesecake empanadas to my family gatherings and now that is all they ask for! We also tried the strawberry chocolate moose cake for my husbands birthday. It was great! The customer service here is very special. I love the pastries here, especially the sweet cheese empanadas. However, the reason for the 1 star is the poor hygiene practice of one particular employee there. On my visit at 5pm on Sunday August 30th, the young gentleman who worked behind the counter was busy assisting another customer who came before me. The employee was wearing a pair of gloves to pick up the pastries, then proceeded to the register, handled the cash and everything, then with the same pair of gloves he started to get my order. He picked up the pastries with those dirty gloves that God knows how long he's been wearing for, while there was obviously a pie server thingy on each tray of pastries. I guess he prefers convenience over cleanliness and the safety of customers. I cannot believe he thinks this is okay. Even if Covid 19 wasn't a thing, this is still unacceptable. Their empanadas are so freaking good. Oh my goodness they are like drugs. I live all the way in Jamaica, Queens and was craving them so the hubby and I took an Uber to go to Aphrodite Sweet just to purchase those sweet tasting empanadas. We brought 2 pounds of it. I've read everyone's reviews about how amazing the cheese empanadas are and I was skeptical. It's only a cheese pastry, right? It's like heaven in your mouth, people! so light and fluffy, not too sweet. It's perfection. One of the reviewers also mentioned the carrot cake. I bought a slice, waiting for after dinner to try it, but if it's anything like the cheese puff, I know it's going to be so good! I came on a Sunday afternoon, there were 2 people ahead of me. I love this bakery! My 9 yo and I were walking by it one day and we were completely drawn in by the wonderful, sweet smells coming from inside. We had no idea what to order and the woman at the front (Layla) was so patient and helped us make some great selections of their different pastries and cookies...we've been hooked ever since. My sister and I made an unscheduled stop by Aphrodite's Sweets after we accidentally got on the wrong bus (and skipped breakfast to catch the bus to boot). She complained that she had not had anything to eat, and as our bus conveniently stopped in front of a baked goods store, I figured why not head in. The bakery is small but quaint; there are tables and chairs if you want to dine in rather than take out. However, they don't really have a wide selection of goods; maybe a few types of cakes and some buns. There's several cookies, but they only really differ in the color of sprinkles baked into them. Aphrodite's has a bigger selection of sandwiches and drinks than sweets. This would probably be a good stop for breakfast or a quick brunch on the go. Behind the counter were 2 employees, an older man at the cash register and a younger woman at the glass display case. The female employee was bright and attentive, immediately greeting my sister and I and asking what we would like. After glancing around at their wares for a bit, my sister ordered three cookies (one with blue sprinkles, and two dipped in chocolate), which came to about a little under three dollars. We ordered them to go, as we were in a rush and needed to board the correct bus across the street from the bakery. The same young lady that greeted us went to ring us up, while the other employee headed for the back of the shop. There must have been a quarter that just narrowly escaped the tip jar or something, because the female employee spotted one on the cash register counter. She asked me if it was mine while I handed over three dollars to pay for the cookies. As I was truthfully replying "no", the male employee cuts me off with a shout from the back. He repeats what I was about to say in a gruff, somewhat irritated voice, as though he thought I was going to lie about the quarter and deprive them of 25 cents in revenue. Not going to judge too harshly (it was early in the morning and in all honestly, I can get pretty crabby too), but I figured it was a relevant experience to mention. Just had a fried puff pastry with with cheese inside, its called cheese empanada. It was the best cheese danish ever had. It was cripsy, fluffy, not too sweet, and tasty. Was delish! Went with my fiance in the evening and got a piece of cake and apple pastry. Everything was delicious. We went back the following morning to get coffee and I got another apple pastry. They very clearly did not make new ones because it was hard as a rock and when I turned it over I noticed something on the bottom. At first I thought it was wax paper and then when i touched it i realized it was covered in mold! Beyond disappointed. Bakeries should not be serving food that is more than a day old. Ehh...we were looking to satisfy a sugar tooth and thought this would be a great pick because of the reviews. It was average at best. Carrot cake was very dry and not very tasty. The cheesecake wasn't bad but not great. Both cakes seemed like they had been sitting in the fridge for some time; didn't taste too fresh. It was ok. Nothing I would return to. We have been going to this Greek bakery near my home for many years and have one of their deserts at every holiday gathering. My favorites are the cheese filled Empanadas, which have gotten many rave reviews, the Apple Strudel, Apple dumplings with a cream cheese filling and the Galaktoboureko, a semolina custard baked in phyllo dough. Great bakery; for Italian and Greek pastries. The Usual Queens pastry staples. And frappes! Famous for: Apple Cheese Pie turnover thingie. The Sweet Cream empanadas or turnovers or Kalitsounia. This is their signature nobody else makes these. The filling is amazing the outside crispy with crystallized sugar. ASK for them they sell out all the ones they display but there's always a batch in the kitchen cooling off. And warm them up I warm everything up that's baked; especially if there's butter in it. My Columbian friend said "THIS is not an Empanada." So if you're Latino call it something else I guess? She still loves them, EVERYBODY DOES. Bring a box and you're an instant hit at the holiday event gathering or just thank you coworkers bring to work. They're open really early for breakfast for tiropita and frappe or bacon egg and cheese sandwiches and everything in between so you can buy a box at 630am and it's way better to reward your coworkers then nasty dozen Dunkin' Donuts a block down.
