Saw this place had a pretty attractive Happy Hour, and decided to give it a try. Service was super friendly, and quick to list recommendations upon request. The happy hour includes some rolls, most of them vegan, a few appetizers, and beverages (including $2 bottles of various Sierra Nevada beers, served with an ice cold pint glass). I had the Oktoberfest :) I started with the Miso Soup, which was pretty tasty with the standard mushrooms, tofu and seaweed. I ordered the Skyway (per recommendation, claimed best selling of the rolls by my server) and the Chestnut ($6.25 on happy hour). My server came by and asked me a second time if I was ready to order, despite having already taken my order and menu away about 10min prior. He apologized, acknowledged he knew what I had ordered and proceeded to take care of hiss other tables. My rolls came out a solid 20min after ordering, despite it being pretty quiet when I placed my order. Both were underwhelming in size and flavor. Mostly rice, less than a few ounces of fish in either one. All together, my 2 rolls, beer, and complimentary soup cost $20... I give it a 6/10 on the bang-for-your-buck rating. For similar prices, I know I can go elsewhere in Chico for more satisfying sushi. read more

The atmosphere was great, and the server funny and engaging. We went for a family birthday, and I love sushi but was wary of vegan sushi, but other family encouraged us to try in addition to the traditional sushi offerings. I loved how fresh everything was, it was so delicate and flavorful, carefully layered and all of the flavors delicious. The real star were the vegan rolls. I am not vegan and was reluctant... but they were fantastic and I would completely order again. Everything was melt in your mouth and perfectly layered and textured. The only tiny issue we has was that they were short staffed that evening so things took a little longer than expected to get the first rolls out but when they did get them out, they got everything out together which was great for dining with a large party. read more

I know what you're thinking...Chico and sushi??!!! What am I doing??!!! To my surprise, the sushi was extremely fresh and the rolls very well prepared. The salmon sashimi was buttery and smooth - very fresh!! The scallop roll had perfectly cooked rice (not overcooked like most rolls at other places) and the scallops were sweet, naturally. The sushi was excellent. My only gripe was how long it took for the food to come out. There were only 2 others there for lunch, but I guess they were filling a substantial pick-up order. Still, I would think they would service the ones who are in the restaurant for over 30 minutes waiting for the food? I would definitely go back whenever I'm in town, despite the long wait. read more

Food is still truly delicious but I'm pretty certain that my tip was increased by the waiter I had last Thursday, so keep an eye out for that. Had a total of 39, then wrote in a $5 tip, and later in my bank account got charged for what would've been the total if I checked the "20% tip" box. Update 12/27: Couldn't stop thinking about it so I called and after a few minutes on the phone it turned out I was right. The woman I spoke with was very kind and concerned and let me know it wouldn't happen again, as well as gave me a gift card. Pros - free miso soup with your order - good selection of rolls (vegan, raw, cooked) - options for non sushi eaters - they ask if you want Wasabi or ginger, which is nice cause I never eat the ginger! Possible con - university area so parking can be a hassle - small location, maybe 26 chairs - non of these bothered me but I can see how it might bother some The two rolls I got (the Nord, the Skyway) were SO good! I really wanted to like this place a lot, especially when I read that they offer sustainable seafood, but the quality didn't meet my standards. Food: I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Bowl and Broadway roll. The Teriyaki Chicken Bowl tasted like your average grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce over rice. I was surprised how much food the bowl came with, given the $5 price. The Broadway roll was small and tasted okay. I have definitely had more fresh fish before. Unfortunately, my friend and I had stomach aches after eating the sushi. I know that serving quality fish is not easy because not only do you have to rely on your supplier, but the fish needs to be properly maintained (i.e. kept in correct temperature). It is also possible that our stomachs are not used to "sustainable seafood." Besides having stomach aches, the quality of sushi did not meet our standards when compared to other restaurants such as Mikuni. Side Notes Ambiance: This place is small and located near Safeway. Service: Staff was very friendly and attentive. Overall: I really want this place to do well, since they are trying to be environmentally conscious, but my sushi standard was not met. read more

hands down the BEST sushi restaurant in chico. i'm all about sustainable sushi! it's pricey, but good sushi always is. if you're looking for more affordable options, they do have a happy hour menu! ($2 pints of beer during happy hour, what more can you ask for?) the miso soup is very unique here, i've never had it with shiitake mushrooms before! but it goes well together. i tried their pork belly ramen, it honestly wasn't the best. i feel like the broth was lacking something in flavor. i'm embarrassed to say i added a little bit of soy sauce to it (don't hate me!) to get it going. i also asked for a side of togarashi which they charge for, unfortunately! i did love the way the pork belly melts in your mouth though! it was super tender and i've never had it that way. the bamboo shoots were also super flavorful, loved the way they were marinated. this is my go to sushi spot! read more

Look, I am Japanese, I have lived in Japan for many years and so I am going to be the most picky person since it's the food I grew up with. For Chico, out in the middle of land mass and not close to the ocean I was impressed with the freshness of the fish. I am also impressed with the size of the sushi. Sushi is meant to be eaten delicately, one full bite into your mouth. Most americanized sushi places have huge sushi pieces that break, fall apart, and require more than one bite...I mean if you're into that kind of thing..hate to break it to you but it's ruining the sushi culture. The sushi here is bite sized, super flavourful with smokiness, and the vegan sushi tastes like meat, it is that good. I give it a 5 stars and I will be going back for happy hour as they have great prices. You'll never find miso soup for $1 anywhere in Cali unless you make it yourself. Cheers! For the business owner here is some advice - get real wasabi or wasabi powder. I can tell the wasabi is colored with blue & yellow to make green and also it's not real wasabi it is horseradish. The food here is fine, but the waitstaff doesn't know the menu. I ordered a couple of standard foil proof items or, spicy tuna hand rolls, hamachi carpaccio and ama ebi (sweet shrimp uncooked. I received an emergency call before my order was brought out so I took the order to go. To my disappointment when I got home, the roll was not a hand roll, and ama ebi was regular cooked shrimp. read more

I shouldn't get my hopes up to appealing sushi places anymore. I went here with my boyfriend and his friend and we all agreed to give it 3 stars. $50 for the three of us, not bad, but if you want to spend a lot of money and not get full, you've found the perfect place. We ate more food at home once we left. Not filling, and it did not spark my taste buds. I have no intention of ever coming back. The sushi rolls were bland and tasteless. Yes I had dipped it in sauces and I still couldn't taste the sushi. Safeway prepackaged sushi is better than this place. And it would be great if they gave you a fork and spoon instead of just chopsticks for those who cannot use them correctly and have to use their hands. The interior decor was very nice though. I want to live in this restaurant. Some of the best sushi I have had. The fish is fresh and delicious. None of it has the sitting or flavor that some restaurants have. The miso is solid and if you like miso I guarantee you will love it. Sustainable sushi? Complimentary miso soup? Vegan rolls? Yes, please! I like that they have a vegan roll menu to accommodate "the less murderous among us" in the area. For appetizer, I've had the lemon and salt edamame, which is surprisingly flavorful! The 5th roll, made of tempura yam, avocado, and sesame seeds, had a subdued sweet chili glaze. Simple and delicious. The 8th, made of pumpkin, asparagus, daikon sprouts, had crunchy shallots sprinkled over them, while the 32nd had a unique combination of asparagus, avocado, mango, and daikon sprouts with a dash of sesame seeds! The 20th roll, which has asparagus, avocado, cucumber, daikon sprouts, and crunchy shallots, had a nice kick to it with the spicy miso sauce. Next time, I'll join the Sake Club there, so that I can purchase a $10 Masu (sake cup), and leave my personalized cup on display behind the bar! Pretty neat. Probably one of the worst sushi places I have been to here in Chico. The sushi cooks were conversing the whole time and taking their time behind the sushi bar which caused our rolls to take really long to come out. The service was mediocre, our waiter was not attentive to us. The menu said "cooked rolls" and we revived cold uncooked rolls. Low quality sushi rolls and bad presentation of the rolls. First time in today, and sad to say I was disgusted. I don't exaggerate either. I am a big Sushi fan, and the service was terrible. Coming from someone who works in the restaurant industry, our server took forever to seat us and there was less than 10 people in when we got there. She took forever to take our order, our food took over 20 minutes for just two rolls and when they came, I was disgusted. I got a simple Cal Park deep fried and the crab was so disgusting I gagged and couldn't eat more than one piece. There was no flavor except the oil that it was fried in. They also charged me for "extra sauce"? What extra sauce? I've never been charged for "extra sauce" ever let alone any sauce on the side. I can't believe I spent almost $18 on a meal I was absolutely disgusted with. Disclaimer: I am not just a regular disappointed customer. If you want amazing new flavors and to try something ever so slightly outside your comfort zone, THIS is the place to go!!! For one, I've never liked oysters before. I've tried them many many times and couldn't get how people liked them so much until I tried the oysters here!!! They had the smoothest texture and the freshest flavor. I love what they manage to accomplish with only sustainable use of fish. Their menu is accommodating to just about anyone, and as someone who generally likes salmon nigiri I think their liberal use of steelhead is awesome. I've enjoyed all the rolls I've tried, and the Gyoza are great as well. The service at their new location downtown needs to iron out some kinks...but they are dealing with new hires, etc. Also ambience and food quality vs price trumps all in my book and Aonami fares excellently in this regard.
