The man immediately responded with something along the lines of, "Yeah, I figured," in a very dismissive and rude tone. Trying to move past that, I asked the younger employee if I could borrow a Sharpie so we could label the drink cups with everyone's names. When I looked over at the man, I saw him sigh and act visibly annoyed, as if we were inconveniencing him just by asking. What bothered me the most was that while we were packing the drinks, two white, blue-collar workers came in. His attitude changed instantly. He was friendly and polite with them, while he had been cold and rude toward us the entire time. When I finished using the Sharpie, I noticed they were both busy, so I simply set it on the counter. The man came over, grabbed it aggressively, handed it to the younger employee, and sarcastically said, "Here's your Sharpie back." Large orders are part of working in food service. If preparing them is frustrating, that shouldn't be taken out on customers. Everyone deserves to be treated with the same level of respect and courtesy. I appreciate the younger employee for remaining polite and helpful, but the older man's attitude made what should have been a simple pickup an unpleasant experience.
