Very, very good Italian meal - overall, a wonderful dining experience.
Used OpenTable to make a reservation, as we figured tables might be at a premium on a Saturday night. We arrived about 45 minutes early with the intent of enjoying a beverage (or two) in the bar. Checked in with a very gracious, friendly host sporting a big smile. "No worries, we have your reservation, seating will be at your requested time, feel free to step over the bar and relax, and I'll come notify you at your requested time." Thank you.
Very comfortable overstuffed chairs and sofas in the bar. Waiter comes to take our drink order with an equally-friendly and engaging smile. Cordial, efficient, friendly - sensing a theme here? Our waiter handles our order, our drinks arrive within minutes - my perfectly-prepared dirty martini w/3 as-requested blue-cheese-stuffed olives, and my companion enjoying her generously-poured and perfectly-chilled Pinot Grigio. Going good so far.
Our genial host now comes over to announce it is our self-appointed dinnertime; would we like to linger in the bar a bit longer, or would we prefer to be seated? Nice touch - no rush, no hurry, didn't forget us - everything you would expect, but often find sorely lacking in far too many cases. Let's eat!
Seated in a 2/3rd's-full dining room, we are immediately handed menus, fresh bread arrives, and an equally-genial and smiling waiter walks up with a big "Hello, welcome to Antonio's" smile. He asks if we've dined here before: not in several years. "Wonderful, welcome back, take your time, do you have any questions?" He then asks if we would like a fresh drink or an appetizer while we peruse the menu. Please give us a few minutes - "My pleasure". Wow - did we just win the lottery? Is this for real? Do they think we're a VIP, or someone else who dines here all the time, or do they think we are friends with the owner? A real restaurant experience, with efficient and friendly hospitality folks who are actually glad to see us, enjoy their work, and are smiling? Wow!
The bread is delightful - fresh, hot, chewy center with a crisp crust - and the olive oil is divine - nutty, sweet, a perfect complement to the bread, without any herbs needed, as many of the large national chains seem to rely upon - makes us wonder if those large national chains are using herbs to mask a low-grade, poor-quality oil? Our salads appear - fresh, crisp, cold greens on a chilled plate, with delicious dressings enhancing each bite. The salads are just the right size - too often the salad can be a meal itself, where Antonio's seems to recognize salad is just a precursor to the main event.
My companion orders the Short-ribs. I order Veal Marsala. Both arrive within just a few minutes - and the beautiful presentations makes our mouth water. The short-ribs are buttery and fork-tender, served w/roasted vegetables on a creamy polenta. The veal is also fork-tender, and the 3 fairly large and tenderly-paneed pieces along with roasted vegetables and mashed potatoes are absolutely spot-on. How about that - Antonio's must have real Italian chef's in the kitchen who know how to prepare simple, yet unfortunately hard-to-find old-school dishes - a wonder to find in this day and age.
On to dessert - coconut cake and a ball of gelato ice cream with a cream center dusted in cocoa powder and then served with an amazing chocolate sauce. Both were quickly dispatched, with extreme prejudice.
Man-o-man, what just happened?
Did we just enjoy a simple meal; prepared by conscientious chef's; served by a friendly, efficient, well-trained wait-staff; and all overseen by a floor manager who actually checked in with us to make sure we were pleased with our experience as guests in his restaurant? Well played, Antonio's. You hit it out of the park. We enjoyed every minute - on the way home, all we talked about was when we can get back for seconds. Very nice - thank you. read more
