Matcha Maroon Tart
Rose T.

Located across the street from the San Mateo Caltrain Station is this small bakery. Even though Anton is known for their crepe cakes, the Matcha Marron Tart ($11.00) caught my eye. +Most matcha baked goods are mild in flavor, but this tart was packed with matcha! It was covered in matcha crumbles and filled with a matcha mousse that was strong and not too sweet. +Crust was crunchy even though it was eaten hours later. +Topped with edible sugar daisies which made it look like a field of flowers -There were 2 whole chestnuts inside the tart. Personally, I would've preferred a marron mousse instead. Side notes: 1.) Sign up with your phone # to earn points *Verdict: 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 d/t service. It was a one-man show, and the employee who was helping me was super friendly! He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the items in the case.

The girl who helped me decide what flavor was super sweet and patient! Overall, the quality of crepe cake is amazing. I got Nutella and Bischoff. Personally, I preferred the Nutella whereas my partner favored Bischoff but both were good regardless. Will come back!

Was in town and wanted to get some yummy dessert we walked by Anton and the cakes were beautiful. We ended up buy two cakes. The Hokkaido milk was definitely my favorite of the two but both cakes were delicious. The service was amazing. He was friendly and so informative about the different flavors. The store is small and there is no sitting area but it was clean and inviting.

It can be a little pricy for cake but they are well made. Though the amount of flavors offered are less than what you'll find at Lady M, I actually prefer Anton over them. Black sesame is my go to flavor and it's to die for!

Matcha Panna Cotta

Cute little shop tucked in downtown. I got the matcha panna cotta and it hit the spot. Texture and flavor were excellent. Will come back whenever I'm in the area and try out other flavors.

Matcha crepe and matcha tart

Dropped by on a weekday to check it out. They offer a few discounts if you purchase more than one item. I have never heard of Anton, but I have had Lady M before. I thought the matcha crepe cake had good matcha flavor and was not too sweet, but it was noticeably not as creamy as what I remember having at Lady M. It is beautifully crafted and a picture of perfection. Service was really helpful. Friendly and informative, not pushy. The store is really small, so it's more like a pick up kiosk. It's a bit on the pricey side, so I'd probably come here to pick up picture perfect desserts for a special occasion, as opposed to a casual snack break. They wrapped out items in a lovely box with a big ribbon. If they improve the ambiance, I could see that justifying some higher prices.

Ugh, okay, this is what my husband would call a "hot take." I don't have a ton of experience with crepe cakes - I've had Lady M a few times, but Anton was another name that'd popped up over and over again and I just never had the opportunity to check them out... until this past weekend because I was in San Mateo and Anton has made its new home in San Mateo. I was excited. I told myself to not over eat, but I couldn't resist getting a slice of their black sesame crepe cake to share and because they were still relatively new to the area, there was a small Christmas discount so I saved a couple dollars from my cake. When I tell you I was shooked at the size of the slice - it almost hurt me a little bit to share it with my husband. You can definitely taste the black sesame in the crepe cake, there's no denying it, but I didn't like the texture the cake left in my mouth afterwards and the cost of one slice being almost $12 is really hard to justify in my opinion. Service was fine - the sales associate that assisted me this day was efficient and packed up my cake slice quickly.

Finally get to try Anton! I bookmarked their SJ location for a long time but never got a chance. So glad they opened in San Mateo! We tried the Best seller - Hokkaido milk , Must Try- Chocolate Tart and the monthly special- Tres Leche Mille crepe. I'm usually not a crepe cake person! But I still want to try different places to see if one day I would love crepe cakes. And I think I've found the place that changed my view on crepe cakes!! Anton's crepe cakes are so soft and not dry! The crepe and cream blend well together. It's the best crepe cake I've ever had! Tres Leche was sweeter than Hokkaido, so I prefer Tres Leche more. But both are good! The Chocolate Tart was so rich! It's definitely a must try for chocolate lover like me!! The service was great too! I wish I live closer so I can come often to try different flavors!

Holiday special Chocolate cake

I've known Anton since before they had a physical location(s) and tbh initially I preferred Lady M over Anton because Lady M feels creamier and tastier at that time. That was also before Laday M came to NorCal so I had to bring back from NYC or LA. I got email notification that Anton opened a physical store in San Mateo earlier this month and for my birthday I decided to try Anton again. I ordered the Holiday Special Chocolate Cake and picked up on my birthday. I was actually blown away by how good it tasted. I actually prefer Anton over Lady M now because I like that it's less sweet and less creamy because it allowed me to taste the multiple layers better than being overwhelmed by the cream between the layers. I think I'll go Anton going forward. Of course the price is high even with a discount and the cake is not super big but I think it's perfect because you don't want to eat the cake in multiple settings. It's much better to finish one cake at a time and I like the sizing. Overall it's the go to place for millicrapes in the Bay Area. The service is good when picking up the cake. The location is small though so don't expect to eat a cake there. This used to be where Tong Sui was before they moved so it's right next to the Caltrain station and the parking structure.

I can see why everyone recommends the Hokkaido Milk cake! It taste light and not too sweet but with a creaminess that is unmatched! Panna Cotta was very good as well.

After a disappointing experience with a different bakery, I was happy to hear that Anton just opened another location right by me. I've only had Anton once many, many years ago and couldn't remember if I liked it or not. Thankfully, past me wrote a review for the SJ location and I was able to reference that to jog my memory (I've always said that I write reviews for myself, and it has come in handy so many times!). It's their grand opening month as they opened just a couple weeks ago, so they're offering 20% off your purchase. PLUS, if you sign up for their loyalty program, you also get a complimentary mango panna cotta (valued at $8). I opted for a slice of the Hokkaido milk and the hojicha ($12 each original price, $9.60 with discount). The Hokkadio milk has little crunchy balls embedded within the delicate layers, so it adds a different texture. I liked this one more than the hojicha (tbh, I don't really remember the latter, so it must have not been very memorable). Slices are on the smaller side though, so it's quite pricey. Definitely take advantage of this 20% off promo while you can if you want to try any goods! The workers are very kind and patient. There's a self-order option or you can order at the register. It's a pretty small storefront though. I think it's where Tong Sui was previously located? The packaging is also gorgeous! They wrapped up my box with a gold ribbon and it really elevated the luxe factor.

Matcha Mille Crpes - 1 Slice

The location of this is right across from the train station in San Mateo. The storefront is a small space and when I came a line quickly formed. Be courteous and know that you may have to wait outside if the space gets too full. The store is pristine and pretty inside. The guy who is manning the cashier was nice and very informative. Since it was my first time, he recommended their most popular flavors--matcha and the tiramisu. Then I got the tres leche one since it was seasonal and pistachio because my family and me love the flavor usually. At the time, if you join the loyalty program you get a free mango panna cotta with your order. I am not sure if this is still the case. The sign outside will be able to inform you. The slices end up being beautifully wrapped and if you want the bag, it is an extra 25 cents. But I feel like it's worth it if you're gifting the cake to someone. The bag is very aesthetically pleasing. The matcha flavor has too bitter for my taste. The matcha was too concentrated, but give it a try if you are a matcha lover. It may be your cup of tea. The tiramisu is very heavy on the espresso flavor. Be warned. It was a delicious flavor and if you usually like tiramisu, this is the cake for you. The tres leche cake was surprisingly very sweet. The tart berries were a welcome touch to counteract the sweetness. I expected it to be a lighter taste, but definitely not what I was expecting. The pistachio did end up being our family favorite. The flavors were not too sweet. The lightness I was looking for was in this slice of cake. Hope to get it again in the future. There are many promos that go on (join their loyalty program to be informed thru email) so take advantage of them if you are in the area. It is definitely worth a try. If you want to gift someone for an occasion like an anniversary or maybe a birthday. Keep in mind, it is $12 a slice so save them for a special occasion or if you want to treat yourself.

Tres Leches Mille Crpes - 1 Slice
Yanli X.

We visited on a Saturday and tried the tres leches and Hokkaido milk cakes. Both were on the sweeter side, noticeably more so than Lady M's cakes and with less cream. The tres leches was especially sweet (but tres leches is usually pretty sweet!). The Hokkaido milk was our favorite, with a distinct, creamy flavor. It was much softer and creamier, which gave it a different mouthfeel and a slightly less intense sweetness. In contrast, the tres leches had a denser texture, with a thinner layer of cream relative to the crepe layers. I could see how it was reminiscent of tres leches not only in flavor but texture as well. For the best experience, I'd suggest keeping these in the fridge within 30 minutes to an hour and enjoying them chilled. We walked around and had lunch before trying the cakes, and although it was a cool autumn day (in the 60s), the Hokkaido one started to melt a bit. Still tasted great, though!

I thought maybe in this day and age of technology the machine would realize the error and credit my account with the funds for the undeliverable third selection. Nope. I looked all over the internet and tried to instant message them on Facebook and my messages weren't even acknowledged. So, yes, I'm very upset with this company and will tell anyone who listens not to trust this machine. Sad thing is my friends said the macarons were really good. EDIT ~ In the interest of fair business my bank account does reflect the credit of $16.00 and only debited my account for $32.00. Fair play.

I chose macarons (of course) and he chose mini cupcakes. I'd been Instagram stalking Macarons A Go-Go for years, so our wedding was the perfect opportunity to finally order from them. And why just go with boring (but still great) round ones, but go with character ones instead? I'm a huge Studio Ghibli and tokidoki fan, so I requested Totoro and the tkdk honey bear, as well as a regular round one in salted caramel, lemon, and mango guava. They were super responsive and really patient when I couldn't make up my mind about flavors, characters, etc. They also delivered the macarons to our venue and set them in a display stand. They looked (and tasted) amazing! I am already looking forward to our next event so I could order more!!!

I'm willing to admit this because well you want my honest opinion and you'll get it. But know this I'm no slouch when it comes to reviews even if I know you. As a matter of fact I'm giving MAGG their first 4-star rating (all are 5 at the time of this writing) You'll understand shortly. First off the creator behind MAGG, Van, is a connoisseur (bordering obsessed) of many things exotically sweet. If she decides to tackle things its with zest (like her Myer Lemon Macs) and reckless abandon (to my waste lines) but leaves you wanting more. Fortunately she did this with Macarons and now presenting it us so we are lucky for it. She's also a sweetheart to-boot. OK enough about that...now about these fancy cookies... At first the MAGG creations were so-so but after trial and error and hundreds of tastings later, I'm extremely satisfied to say that they are just a delight to enjoy. Every flavor I have tried has been on point. Myer Lemon, Spiced Pumpkin, Fleur Del Sel Caramel and Black Sesame were some of the standouts. The flavors stay true to their name and why wouldn't it be when it's fresh natural ingredients. She says she doesn't use food coloring and I'm just bewildered because they are not only a delight to eat but also look at with their vibrance and beauty (never thought I'd use those words to describe a cookie.) Texture wise the shell is crispy to a snap on initial bite moving inward to a chewy center and then finally the amazing flavored inner cream. I swear if I could "oreo" these cookies and lick out the cream I would but the eating them as a whole is what experience a macaron is about and MAGG does that well. Before I didn't even take notice of a macaron simply because they never really made an impression. Now that I have been re-introduced to them I have sought out and compared many others to MAGG and well they definitely hold their own if not blow out most Bay Area bakeries through the flavors. Now for the reason for the 4 stars, these damn things are on a rarity. You want to collect them as much as you want to eat them. Right now MAGG is only available through special order or in Burlingame Farmer's Market. I just wished there was more places to get them at or one place that had them available all the time since I'm not spoiled with tastings at gatherings anymore. If you are into Macarons then you will definitely need to check out Macarons A Go-Go. As a fringe benefit you'll also be supporting a local small business and great person. Highly recommended (when you can find them)!

Spoon ordered: French flan I don't usually go for flan, but this one is different!!! I do absolutely love the custard layer in a fruit tart, so imagine that with a firmer texture and a richer vanilla flavor. It sits in this perfectly thin, almost hidden pie-like crust. The toffee cookie had bits of toffee which again provided texture without being overly sweet. However, I do feel like there was a lot of time spent explaining this when we could have been working on making the croissant. I'd prefer if we just got succinct instructions and got sent on our way while fun facts about croissants and how different ingredients interact with one another are told to us. I've taken a baking class at Sur La Table where there are TVs placed around each perspective, so everyone can watch as the instructor works on her dish instead of awkwardly huddling around the table craning to get a peek at the proper technique. When I made my croissant at home, they were perfectly buttery and flaky. Baking Arts also printed out PDF instructions for us to take home. As for the selection of baking goods, I noticed a lot of novelty tools that caught my interest! They have a decent selection of food dyes and edible glitter/pearls that are perfect for decorating cakes and baking with.
