Not only does Anthony's bake pizzas but they will bake you! The establishment is probably 90 degrees and muggy throughout and it was almost no wonder the worker at the counter seemed annoyed to have to do anything. Strangely also, there was not a pizza in sight. I asked about slices and they said they only had the veggie, which gave the impression that in this famous establishment there was one single slice of pizza to be found (somewhere). After you get your pizza, you can go eat in the separate, laundromat-style-looking room which is, well, the same muggy temperature. The pizza was salty and in my opinion too thick with cheese. The Anthony's store on Packard took an order for a pizza and gave us a pickup time. When we arrived at that time, the pizza had not been made to order, and they had to start over. No contact had been made, and we had to sit and wait another 20 minutes for the right pizza. The store seemed disorganized and no one apologized for the mistake, lack of contact, or delay. Gourmet is a word that gets thrown around a lot. This pizza isn't up there with what Wolfgang Puck was doing when he invented California Style Pizza in Los Angeles. But that's a good thing. For my family, we call Anthony's when we are in the mood for a hearty and heavy Chicago Style Stuffed Pizza. This is the stuff that New Yorkers hate to call pizza. They tend to think of it as a pizza flavored casserole. They aren't entirely wrong. These things are massive. When picking up a large pie in its box, there is a heft to this pizza that let's you know you're in for a hearty cheese-filled meal. My daughter loves Chicago Style pizza because the sauce is on the top, and she can scrape it off. That said, she still is deeply suspicious of a pizza one needs to eat with a fork and knife. The bottom crust on Anthony's stuffed pies tends to be nice and crispy. The pepperoni are nicely spicy. The sausage is a little odd, in that it is cut in flat "sheets" that lay evenly inside the pie, but it brings good flavor to the party. Our last trip was the first time we tried to go with half toppings in a stuffed crust pie. The division was remarkably good, with a map drawn on the outside of the box as to which half was which. It also meant that we got to try one with mushrooms, and those were delicious. I am floored that Anthony's offers individually reheated slices of these pies, and one of these days, I may be tempted to try those. In the meantime, we'll stick to our full pies, ordering the large ones. It's enough pizza for a family of eight, but the slices do reheat well. My preferred technique is to heat them in a well buttered skillet with a covered lid on low until the middle is hot, the bottom is crisp, and some of the cheese has melted and caramelized in the pan. Can you get better in Chicago? Sure. Probably. But when the craving strikes, I am really glad that Anthony's is here in Ann Arbor. read more

The staff is very nice and there weren't many people at the restaurant when we arrived, so we had plenty of time to order, and could get seats. (The seating is very limited though, be prepared to eat elsewhere). Getting the pizza didn't take too long, so can't complain about that! Don't bother. Might as well get Dominos (at least it will be on time and edible). We ordered two pizzas and a salad at 4:45. Told it would be an hour wait, which is fine--we're feeding two kids, and we ordered with plenty of wiggle room for dinner. Or so we thought. An hour later--when the food was expected to be delivered--we get a call. Turns out they were out of an ingredient we ordered. No explanation why it took them an hour to discover this critical piece of information. They can make us something else but it will take another 45 minutes. The kids' pizza is ready but delivery driver is out so...their food will just sit until the other one is ready. Two hours after ordering the food arrives. Well, some of it. One cold pizza that had been sitting out for an hour. And one burned to a crisp. As for the salad? Who knows. Delivery driver didn't have it in his car. We've ordered from Anthony's before, both for the family and larger gatherings. After this experience, though, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. read more

I decided to try something new and ordered a Sicilian style pizza with extra cheese. It was so delicious after I put it in the oven for about 10 minutes on 400 and 2 minutes under the broiler. I am going to get the same thing but ask for it "well-done" next time. The crust had the perfect crunch on the outside and really nice chewy in the middle. We've been loyal Anthony's customers for over a decade and order from them almost once a week. Always the same thing: Anthony's Deep Dish with spinach, mushrooms, and garlic. Always delicious. Except tonight. It was bready, bland, and had barely any cheese or toppings. Pretty sure no garlic at all. When I called to tell them, I assumed they would want to make things right for a loyal customer. Instead they offered $10 off our next order. This is a $45+ pizza. Not an adequate response. We wanted to find a new spot for Pizza and Anthony's was a great find! Great crust, fantastic sauce and excellent toppings. We ordered the Chicago Style Carnivore "Take and Bake" and warmed it up at home. You call in advance, order your pizza, they partially cook it, we picked it up about 20mins after I called and then we took in Home and put it on our Cast Iron Pizza Pan and into a 400 Degree Oven for 17mins! It came out fresh and made my face hole happy!!!! We got a medium and it was too much for just the two of us, but we couldn't stop eating it, so now we are in a Pizza Coma!!! If there's ever been a classy, five-star Chicago style pizza place in the Ann Arbor area, then Anthony's would be it. They have never let me down, and serve the best pizza you can imagine. I used to be a regular customer over at their location in the Georgetown Mall, which closed a few years ago. So visiting their new location on Packard east of Stadium, had me wondering if their quality had changed over the years or not. After enjoying a medium sized gourmet pizza, I can honestly say this place hasn't lost a bit of their charm and excellence. I love the Canadian bacon! I only got to try their classic deep dish with sausage. My rating is comparing them to classic Chicago deep dish pizza restaurants: Giodarno's, Lou Malnati's, and Gino's east. I have to say for Ann Arbor, this was my favorite deep dish, but compared to classic Chicago deep dish, I found it pretty good/average, B-/C+. The sauce was rich and had a sweet hearty taste, as a preference, I prefer my sauce to have wine and some basil, or at least be able to taste those ingredients in the sauce. Their crust was well baked and not to hard, had a nice soft chew. I wished their sausage would have been sliced whole deli style instead of crumbled into the sauce. If, I have a serious craving for deep dish, I would come back here, but if you want the best you will have to drive 4 hours west unfortunately. Also, the restaurant is quite small maybe 15 people, 3 to 4 tables, something to keep in mind if eating here. The service was fairly good. read more

I have to say the first two times I came here I would have gave it a five. Then it moved down to a four, and now after close to 10 trips it's a solid three. Why the decline? Inconsistency. Long story short every four or five weeks it's my turn to bring dinner to game night. I always get a large Anthony's Deep Dish (different than the Chicago stuffed) with pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, onion, and a large NY Thin pepperoni, bacon, onion. Never has the pizza been cooked the same or even looked the same. Sometimes onions are very crunchy, sometimes the NY thin is nearly burned all over the top, whereas other times it's under done. The amount of toppings is all over the place which indicates either laziness, or poor employee training / procedures / tools to implement consistency. Both of which are not a good thing. I love a good laugh and there were plenty of hilarious snapchats sent but the Alice in Wonderland Tea House theme with scattered CGI frogs holding pizzas leaves a lot to be desired for an Italian dinner. Today we visited Anthony's for the first time. We stopped by once before for dinner but there was no one inside so we decided to try something else. Today we committed. Well, we actually committed to their Main St. location...which ended up being closed down. There was a sign on their window directing us to their Packard location. We pull up and decide to still give them a go. Now, I had previously read a review mentioning how they couldn't tell if they had walked into a pizzeria or a cupcake shop so I was curious as to what we would find. What we found was an oddity, lol. We walked into a brightly painted and decorated...pizza place that was decorated in an Alice in Wonderland theme. Why though?! It's just weird. I don't know if Anthony's took over from another business and just hasn't had the chance to redecorate or if this is just their decor. Pink and black checkered floor, Alice in Wonderland stickers all over the walls mixed with fairy stickers, and then random pizza stickers mixed in. So the food. We ordered flat bread cheese bread as an appetizer, and it was really very good. The order was basically a small pizza of flat bread with cheese on it. It came with a small side of marinara sauce, but I found that I preferred the bread by itself. As my lunch I ordered a slice of deep dish cheese pizza, and my husband ordered two slices of deep dish meat pizza. Each slice was $3. Our total, including an iced tea, three deep dish slices of pizza, and the cheese bread was $20.37. The pizza was alright. I think that it would've been better (fresher) had we ordered a whole pizza from scratch as opposed to individual slices. They weren't bad, by any means. I would ask next time that there is plenty of sauce on top of mine next time. That sounds ridiculous to comment on but we're talking about the main course being pizza. What I got was crust filled with with cheese that was only covered maybe halfway with sauce. As this was our first time with them I can't account for anything other than our food, but I will say that the table near us ordered what looked to be a calzone, and it was HUGE. The other person at the table ordered a wrap of some kind, and it was huge as well. Easily could be shared by two to three people. Our waitress was nice and helpful, and they had a nice, full display of cake individually packed which all looked beautiful. So would we go back? Yes, but probably to-go. It's just such a weird environment to be eating pizza in. Would we recommend them? Yes, for their food. Update: We went back a couple of days ago for an early dinner and dined in again. Same feelings about the awkward decor (It's even in the restroom. What?) but had an even better experience. I had another single slice but this time had a veggie slice which came with spinach, onions, mushrooms, and feta cheese. I added black and green olives. I live right up the street from Anthony's and this is a regular spot for us. Firstly- the deep dish pizza is THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD! And I've eaten it alllll over the US. It's that good. Seriously, ridiculously good. I think I've got the best combo down- Anthony's deep dish with sausage and spinach. Order that. It's amazing. You will crave it constantly. Secondly- please guys, please please please change your decor. It doesn't fit your food at all. I think that the owner/manager wanted it to be a sort of tea house- but honestly, Ann Arbor has good tea houses- stick to what you guys do best- that's pizza. I don't like eating there because of it really, the decor is just terrible. Please change it. You guys will do better, I swear. It's just weird and juvenile. Unbelievably good pizza. Each style is delicious. Yeah, it's quite expensive for pizza but a large deep-dish can easily feed 3 or 4 people and they will all be happy. Depends how you look at it. At the top of their menu, right under their logo reads the claim "Specializing in Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza." This seems likely to be true, as nearly all parts of my experience did not suggest this place to be a well-rounded 'gourmet' pizza location (wow... no pun intended). Upon first walking in, it was not so much the fantastical Alice in Wonderland color scheme that caught my attention, but the fact that they were serving tea. I thought I had walked into the wrong door, but realized that from the same counter, they take orders for tea as well as pizza. Not what I was expecting for a place specializing in pizza. Additionally, even for a dinner hour at 6pm there were many people in line for pickup and takeout, while the many dine-in tables sat vacant. But I had been gearing up for a delightfully sense-tingling pizza experience, and these indicators weren't enough to halt my endeavor. After I ordered--committed to a large chicken Florentine pizza (for leftovers, optimistic about what I would taste and experience)--I picked a table in their large sitting area. I was pleased that my order for tea was brought out to me at my table, and so was my pizza eventually. My pizza was brought out ready to go in a box, but when I asked about silverware and plates I was brought plastic cutlery, a paper plate, and paper towels. I wondered if I had not specified that I was there to dine in. But being less concerned about the presentation as I was about evaluating the product, I dug in. The pizza was not bad by any means, it was fairly standard. Each of the ingredients tasted fresh, but the flavor development of the chicken, mushrooms and garlic seemed to go only as far as going directly from their container onto the pizza. This would not have been bad, except for the fact that this was labeled as gourmet pizza, and I paid nearly $30 for a large pie. In that moment, it crossed my mind that the most recent reviews that I had seen had all revolved around their meaty, no-doubt saucy Chicago-style pies, and perhaps I had ventured deeper into their less-trodden specialty pizzas. I started rethinking my experience, with all of the parts adding up to an image more resembling a trusty neighborhood eatery than a pizza aficionado haven. All of this to say, their pizza does not seem justify their categorization as 'gourmet,' let alone command the price I paid. Three, maybe four stars would have been a fair rating, except for their mismatched positioning in my expectations of quality-for-price.
