Annie Gunn's is one of STL's top restaurants for a very good reason!! (I know, I know it's Chesterfield blah blah) The service is always on point. The staff is super helpful while still maintaining a high level of service. The ambiance is what you'd expect from a steakhouse. I prefer the tables around the bar, as it's always great people watching. The star of the show are their incredible meats! Whether you're getting a burger, fish, or steak - you can taste the quality in every bite. I like their filets but their "world famous" burger is not to be missed! Once again I am blown away with my experience here. Of course their food is the main draw for the obvious reason that it is superb but the attention to details really shows. One example - they update their extensive wine list on what seems to be a frequent basis. Another thing I appreciated was that the wait staff explains each special including the price. That is the way it should be. Don't the customer ask the price (esp if you are in business of customer service). When the hostess seated us she wished me happy birthday. The waitress also told me to save room for apple pie and their special cinnamon ice cream. What a nice treat! It was delicious. But then again everything was delicious. We had the smoked seafood appetizer- wow !!! Loved it. For my meal I got one of their seafood specials: grouper served with green beans and mashed potatoes. Fabulous! My husband loved his meatloaf. We recently visited the St. Louis area where I have a couple of students that live. They both recommended Annie Gunn's as the can't miss place in the metro. I see why. Our server Abby was amazing!!! She was so kind and helpful. Very patient with us. We were slow to choose what we wanted. Everything sounded so good. We settled on the clam chowder for an appetizer which we both just adored and the house ground meatloaf for our entrée which we shared. We each got a huge piece of meatloaf and some mashed potatoes and summer squash. There was a small plate splitting fee, which was absolutely appropriate. My wife and I agreed it's probably the best meatloaf we've ever had. Delicious!!! Abby was kind enough to gift us a piece of apple pie with the first taste of cinnamon ice cream either of us have ever had. It was made by a local creamery and was divine. We are still talking about that ice cream. The interior seems rustic, like an old Irish or English pub. So very cool. What a lovely experience and a total gem for anyone who lives in the area. Had drinks and dinner here this evening. The vodka martini was excellent. The bartender was so friendly and let us stand by the bar for a bit until we found a place to stand. It was only 5:15 and fully packed as usual. When we asked for a table the next available was 9:30 and they put us in a waiting list. Guess what??? A cancellation came and we got a table at 5:30. If you've ever been there you know this place is always busy and always amazing! The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. Two bars! And several years ago the patio was enclosed as part of the restaurant and has a wall windows. Also, there are now rooms for big parties AND a room to have private parties and it is beautiful!!! So our waiter gave us a sample of a very good wine! Excellent. I ordered the french dip, which I've had several times. Tonight it was exceptionally delicious! Soft, yet crunch bread, cheese and amazingly tender beef, served with au jus and horse radish. Outstanding tonight! And fries also. But that french dip was THEE best ever. Gotta try it! I have been to Annie Gunn's numerous times over the past 30+ years. It is always a special treat to dine here. The ambiance is an elevated casual and you can choose to sit in the darkened bar area or the lighter, brighter glassed off area. They also offer private booths, which are quite cool. Today I was meeting up with a former work colleague and friend from Australia. It just so happened that we were in town at the same time. She was having a business lunch meeting at Annie Gunn's, so we decided to meet there after the meeting. I didn't eat, but they did during their meeting and quite enjoyed the food. The three of us (my former colleague and a current colleague of hers) all enjoyed a tea while we caught up. It absolutely tasted fresh brewed. Their first waiter left without clearing the table, so when the new server cleared it up and was so kind, she was rewarded with a nice tip and some Lindt pistachio truffles, which I brought for my friends. 98% of my reviews include photos, but because we were all caught up in conversation, I didn't take any this time. I'm 100% convinced you can not find a better French Dip than this (I try them everywhere). It literally melts in your mouth! I have visited the restaurant a couple times. My daughter was in town and we decided to have lunch. I am aware it can get very busy, so I did make reservations. The restaurant is well decorated and very spacious, I love the design of the newest part, the windows make it seem like you are outdoors, it is well lit and has a very cozy atmosphere. Our waitstaff was wonderful, she was attentive, patient and had a great personality. We both ordered a glass of Cabernet. It was bold and fruity, we enjoyed it with our meal, which was a smoked seafood sampler and selection of cheeses. It has been a while since we had this, but it was so mouthwatering and delicious, I have thought about this meal almost everyday. The meats were so tasty and flavorful, the crackers and bread were paired perfectly. The cheeses were smooth, delicate and just unbelievably delicious! We stopped in without a reservation. Although we didn't wait an inordinate amount of time, I would recommend a reservation. All the staff were nice and let us know we could wait in the bar area and the bartender on either side would take note and give us a seat there when available. A spot opened up at the Wine Cabinet? I am not sure what it was called but it was a bar type spot but had a waitress for service. The seat was perfect when we didn't have a reservation, our server was attentive, and we never felt lost in the shuffle on a busy night. There were about six spots here and another couple sat later in our meal but no one else joined the open spots. Rebecca, our server, was fantastic! She went through the specials and answered my questions, made a recommendation on a drink that was great, the Winterberry. She checked in on us regularly while hustling as it was a Friday night. We ordered wings, they were pretty good, crispy is a must and they were. I got the halibut salad with a 1/2 gem salad. The salad was large for a side. Our entrees arrived in a timely manner, my halibut cooked perfectly. Asparagus and butternut squash were just the right amount and very good. It came with a polenta cake, it was ok, I haven't had it often so not sure if I even like it. We were stuffed by then but couldn't pass up apple pie, it is so good! I took my parents here last Sunday. I'll say, our meal wasn't as good as last time we went in October. But it was still good. The potato pancake was a bit mushy. And the apple pie seemed off. My steak was good. My dad's French dip was good. My mom got a Caesar salad with chicken and the chicken was cold. She was bummed. I guess you need to ask about that but who doesn't want grilled chicken on a salad. Especially at a place like Annie Gun's. Our service was wonderful. Annie Gunn's will always be special to us. We had our wedding reception here, so coming back for our anniversary just felt right. Once again, they made it a memorable experience. The drinks were fantastic. The Bloody Mary had the perfect kick, the Maker's Mark espresso martini was smooth and bold, and the dirty martini was exactly how it should be: strong and delicious. We started with the carpaccio, and it was phenomenal. Easily one of the freshest we've ever had. It melted in our mouths. A really nice touch was the sparkling wine served with all dinners, which added to the celebratory vibe without us even having to ask. We were also treated to a complimentary apple pie with cinnamon-flavored Clementine's ice cream for our anniversary, and it was just as good as it sounds. Warm, flavorful, and the perfect sweet ending. The service was wonderful. Multiple staff members checked in on us to make sure everything was going well, and they were genuinely kind and attentive. The lamb chop was cooked perfectly, and my husband loved the sweet & savory glaze. A few small things to note: the caprese tasted super fresh but could have been colder, and the filet, while flavorful, wasn't quite warm enough. The plate was actually hotter than the steak itself. We were also seated at a table in the bar area with our 6-month-old (which wasn't ideal) but we made the reservation the same day for 7:30pm and felt lucky to get a table at all. The restaurant is poppin' - fairly loud and lively. Held my son and daughter-in-laws rehearsal dinner here and I cannot say enough. The service was exceptional. The ambience is fantastic and the team works with you to build a menu that works only with your pallet but with your price point. We had the appetizers served family style at the tables so that folks had something to eat as a peruse. The menu in front of them and orders were taken further salads and entrées. The bartenders were spot on. They were a very efficient and extremely flexible if we wanted a particular Wine brought in we could bring it in. My daughter & son-in-law are "foodies" like us, and despite all the times they have visited us from KC, we've never taken them to Annie Gunn's. Weeks ago they asked us to watch their kids over New Years while they met up with friends, no problem. So I immediately made a resy at AG's since it was holidays, got a table for 6 (4 adults plus their 2 school age daughters, who a restaurant "pros" despite their ages. Day of the resy, my son in law had a situation that would keep them from arriving in time for our 5:30 resy, so I called the restaurant and asked if we could push back our reservation to 6:30, no problem they said. We arrived Tuesday night, cold & blustery and were seated in a very warm & inviting room with a fireplace. Service was prompt & attentive, drinks we ordered were spot on and delicious: Old Fashions for my daughter and son in law, Grey Goose martini for me and a white wine for my wife. The drinks were very satisfying! Annie Gunn's has an incredible list of off-menu specials to choose from, probably 6 fresh fish specials, plus dry aged steaks prepared any number of ways. My daughter & son in law both ordered steaks, a filet for her and a ribeye for him, both cooked perfectly. Beautifully plated sides of mashed potatoes & asparagus, the presentation was fantastic! I had their big eye tuna special, as I'm Partial to fresh fish. Big eye tuna is a cut below ahi, and tonite's dish came with a brown gravy covering the fish, which I ordered rare. Eh, the gravy was an adjustment for me, it tasted fine but hard to discern the fish flavor. My sides were also mashed potatoes and 2-3 spears of asparagus, perfectly cooked. My wife, who eats mostly plant based, ordered an appetizer of smoked shrimp which she said was delicious, and she devoured the dish. Our two grandkids ordered kid sized portions of steak, with fries as a side and really seemed to enjoy it. Everything was delicious, perfectly prepared and plated. For desert, we ordered a large slice of their apple pie, covered in vanilla ice cream, and a nice sad iced slice of their flourless chocolate cake. Both were delicious and devoured by our group. I had an espresso as well, it was tasty. Annie Gunn's doesn't disappoint. It's a great restaurant, priced on the high side, but worth it. Our server was attentive throughout our meal. Annie Gunn's never fails to impress. We've alway have an excellent meal today, 6oz filet that's always cooked to perfection. Instead of mashed potatoes we get roasted potatoes. Wish they had baked potatoes instead...atmosphere is done in deep rich wood tones and always setup and is always nice and clean, and tables are bussed right away. WOW!! My boyfriend and I came on our three year anniversary for a date night. We started with a couple drinks and they came in a timely manner. I got a crisp dry Sauvignon blanc and he got a tequila neat (no judgement there, he's put up with me for a long time) To start, I ordered the caprese salad special - this was so delicious and the basil was crazy fresh. My boyfriend got their famous potato soup - and i gotta say - I will be dreaming about it until I can come back for it. Next, I ordered their filet mignon and my partner got the sirloin. Cooked to perfection and the flavor was immaculate to where I didn't need extra salt or sauce! (Which is unheard of for me?!) To add, the creamy whipped potatoes they came with were also amazing and the sweet vegetable was great for my palate. We weren't expecting anything for it being our anniversary but they gave us complimentary champagne and a dessert. The apple pie with the cinnamon ice cream... o m g.... It is a MUST TRY. If you want an amazing steak, this is the place to go! The Cabernet cracked pepper butter is so delicious and both steaks were cooked perfectly medium rare. The sides are also delicious. The sopa de tortilla was excellent. I recommend trying the apple pie with cinnamon ice cream if you want a top tier dessert. It was incredible. I really don't think you could miss with anything on the menu. Our server, Elizabeth, was lovely. She was so knowledgeable and took great care of us. Overall I can't recommend this place enough. The over all experience was less than desirable. The bartenders were spooning out Guinness to make it less frothy. I watched our bartender look up the basic drink I ordered and it was still wrong. Once we were seated at the table we were there another 2.5 hrs. A $70 steak came out way over cooked. We were a table of 4 and watched every table around us come in after us and leave before us including a large table. The server was nice, but just getting a round of drinks took over 20 min every round. The food took an hour and half. After sitting that long we were just over it. I took my salad home and ate half the next day when I found a whole clothing tag in it. We spent over $600 and felt like we were being held hostage to just get in and out for dinner. In the past, we have had AMAZING dining experiences at Annie Gunn's, but last night it just didn't meet our expectations. We came for my partner's 21st birthday last night, and were seated in a cramped little table between a fireplace and a booth despite making the reservation roughly 2 months in advance. We were given complimentary champagne shots upon seating, which was a nice touch--our server was also very friendly! We ordered the beef tartare and cheese board for appetizers, however we were only about halfway through them before we were told that our entrees were arriving shortly, in which another server took our board and offered to re-plate or box it up for us. It made us feel kind of rushed. I ordered the lamb chops which while they had very little meat on each chop, were very good! My partner ordered the red snapper special and requested a white wine pairing of our server's choice to go with it, which he never received. She did have a big table next to us, so it was understandable that she may have gotten sidetracked and just forgot, but still kind of disappointing considering the occasion. We finished our entrees and were given a complimentary creme brûlée for dessert, which was not very good in my opinion--it was quite watery. The apple pie is MUCH better, in fact it is probably one of my favorite things on the planet--however, my partner was recently diagnosed with celiac hence the substitution. Overall, I can't say that this particular experience was worth the price tag and I hope the next time we come it is the experience that we are more previously accustomed to from Annie Gunn's. read more

For an appetizer we ordered the crab cakes. I liked the addition of more southwest flavors from the black beans and chipotle aioli, but the andouille sausage did overpower the crab a little. For our main dishes, my husband got a fish special they had that night which he really enjoyed. I ordered the 6oz filet mignon. While the sides were a little bit lackluster, the steak was probably the most delicious steak I have ever eaten. Our server was attentive, as well as all of the other staff members moving throughout the restaurant. They were extremely busy (as I'm sure they always are), but we were still checked on frequently. Because it was my husband's birthday, they gave us a slice of apple pie with cinnamon ice cream. It was the perfect sweet end to a very tasty meal! I came from out of town and specially asked to come to Annie Gunn's for dinner because I remembered coming here all the time and had great meals , when I used to visit my family and when I used to call on STL as my territory for work . WELL , tonight was probably will be my / our last visit to your restaurant. We had the reservation in one of the private room , our waitress was Ashley , initially she was very attentive then we ordered and everything went downhill from there . We ordered tomatoes salad to share , literally 45 mins have passed and the salad was not there . I had my soup and my bread as we were all waiting for the tomatoes salad , it took 2 of us to reach out to Ashley , she said she was sorry because she forgot to ring it into the system . I am very disappointed in the food and service tonight , it seems like you guys are busy but you can't have great customer service. I am writing this to you not to get any incentive , I am writing you to possible train your servers to be more thorough , if you feel like they have too many tables , please have a list for extra servers for emergency help or moreover , the manager should step in and help so we do not have to experience this ever again . Very conflicted on my star rating for this place. The pork chop was just okay, but the mashed potatoes were the best I've ever had. Service was pretty good too, and the ambiance is 5 stars all the way. But when the headline entree is just okay, 4 stars is as good as it gets. Came in on a Wednesday night for dinner. Would have had a wait for a table, but got a bar stool straight away. Started with their featured Manhattan. For $12 it was perfect. Complete with those really expensive purple cherries over one big rock. Ordered the pork chop for dinner. The chop itself was just okay. A bit over cooked (was not asked how I wanted it done) with chopped peaches and a béarnaise sauce. The peaches were good, the sauce wasn't needed. The chop just didn't have a lot of flavor to it, a real disappointment for a 'smoke house.' On the other hand, they laced the mashed potatoes with horseradish and they were Devine. I will begin putting horseradish in every batch of mashed potatoes I make from this day forward. My server/bartender had been working there for 18 years. Very knowledgeable and friendly.
