a menu on the side of a truck
Cassandra C.

The ordering area is at the front of the truck along with a big menu on the passenger side door. I ordered from it- tikka masala ($12) and mango lassi ($3). I gave a $20 and got back $4. I was confused so I asked why I didn't get $5 back. She said I needed to check the prices on the other menu, at the BACK of the truck where you pick up food because those are the real prices. The sign where you order says $3 for a mango lassi. The sign at the back of the truck where you pick up food says $4 for a mango lassi. Not okay to advertise one price where you actually order food and then charge a higher price from a sign that can't be read when ordering.

We ran into the Annakoot food truck behind the Music Concourse at Golden Gate Park. Annakoot is an Indian food truck based in Berkeley. The truck is painted red and looks like it's got a few years on it. To date, this has been my only Indian food truck experience and I enjoyed it, for the most part. One thing that's cool about this food truck is that it has a tandoor oven on-board. A tandoor oven is a cylindrical clay oven used in Indian cuisine. Annakoot serves 10 entrees and 3 desserts. The entrees include: - Paratha fold - tandoor chicken with rice, veggie, and spices in a flatbread - Sabzi - assorted veggies cooked with spices - Chana Masala - beans and potatoes cooked with veggies and spices - Kofta - veggie balls in curry sauce - Chicken Curry - Lamb Curry - Chicken Tikka Masala - tandoor chicken with tikka masala sauce - Konkani Shrimp Curry - Samosas - Pakora "Boat" - veggie fritters Most of the entrees come with basmati rice and naan bread. All chicken used is free range. The desserts are gulab jamun (Indian doughnut balls soaked in syrup), phirni pudding (rice pudding), and mango lassi (mango yogurt drink). The entrees are $7-10 each and the desserts are $3-4 each. I tried the paratha fold ($7) and the chicken curry ($8). Paratha is the name of the flatbread. The paratha fold included chicken, rice, lettuce, and a combination of spices, mint, and tamarind chutneys. The paratha fold was made with whole wheat and was cooked on a griddle. It was a savory wrap and, as is common with Indian food, had good flavoring. The chicken curry consisted of boneless chunks of chicken cooked in a curry sauce with garlic, ginger, and spices. Though the menu did not mention it, it also came with a small side salad topped with mint and tamarind chutneys. Together with the soft basmati rice and the naan bread, it hit the spot. Overall, I think Annakoot is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. I think some of the ingredients could have been fresher, particularly the lettuce. Other than that, I enjoyed the food and would try them again.

Curry Up Now is a a pretty solid benchmark for Indian food trucks. "Meh. I've experienced better." definitely applies to this truck in comparison, hence a rare (for me) 2-star. It feels like they're taking shortcuts to dish food out faster, but they don't really draw a large crowd so speed shouldn't be a big concern. I think if they made some of their dishes to order, they could easily improve quality a bit. Paratha Fold: This reminded me of something from Taco Bell. The abundance of wilted lettuce was the biggest turnoff. Since they churned out the fold so fast and the lettuce was so limp, I surmise it must have been pre-made well ahead of my arrival. The chicken tasted more stewed/pulled than baked in a tandoor (as mentioned on the menu). The only other ingredient seemed to be basmati rice, so it was pretty bland. The surrounding paratha was ok, not greasy, kinda like a thick whole wheat tortilla. Samosa: The samosa itself seemed standard. I didn't like how they just had it floating in a pool of tamarind and cilantro chutneys. By the time you bring it to some place to eat, the bottom of the samosas are soggy. I mean, it's not like a chaat or anything, so why not serve the sauces on the side to apply as you're eating?

Now located at the Ferry Building on Tuesday. Food was expensive, not that great and I got an unwelcome surprise in the first bite of my chicken wrap. Almost broke a tooth!

How can you call this Indian food?! Tasteless, cheap and accepting cash only? This naan bread is a joke... How many times it was warmed up before you sold it? Stay away from this place. Subway would be a better place for less money.

Inconsiderate and pushy. They pulled their truck right in next to the artists booths and refused to move when asked. Exhaust fumes from the truck making everyone sick doesn't seem to matter to them. Just plain obnoxious people.

Simple review of the month. It's cheap, it's good, and they give you a lot of food. Also in a great location, so you can enjoy your food and nature. 'Nuff said.

Samosas, $4.

I was just strolling around the Golden Gate Park, looking for the Conservatory of Flowers until I came across a small line of food trucks & food stands. Having a full stomach from an earlier lunch, I still wanted something to snack on. Samosas??! YES PLEASE! The samosas was packed full of potatoes; and they were extremely tender and fluffy! And the outside skin was thin, lightly crispy and flaky! It was soo good! I can't even describe it to you. CASH ONLY. $4, two samosas.

Yesterday lunch. Kids field trip : Food truck at golden gate park near academy of science. Food is ok. Chicken curry , chicken tiki masala and mango lassi. The naan is dry n hard plus mango lassi isn't good. 2 star.

Always had a good experience with the vegetarian option I like, veggie pakora. Good vibes coming from the truck.

I got half Butter Chicken and half Palak Chicken on my pizza and it was delicious. Also, something about their crust was so good. It was chewy but it a good way and the crust wasn't overbearing. If I had any feedback though, I wish the flavors were more intense. I really wanted to be hit with the Indian flavors. But I'm assuming the toppings that they use are also what they serve as à la carte which I think the flavors get diluted when added with bread, cheese, and a bunch of other toppings. Also, I wish it was spicier! I got raita (yogurt sauce) on the side. I think all Indian Pizza places should serve raita on the side of their pizzas. I'll be coming back and trying their other pizzas.

And she absolutely loves the "butter chicken pizza" So, since she was in town we thought of getting a Indian pizza for us to try (butter chicken) since the reviews seemed amazing at this place (8 reviews... hahaha). We opted for a takeout versus eating in. Though the place seemed rather nicely set-up when I arrived for the pickup, I greeted the gentleman as I came in to get the pizza. He seemed not so interested in convo after I paid and I commented on how the place was nicely decorated from previous business I use to patronized. After getting my pizza and met up with my sister at my mom's place for what we thought will be one of the best pizza we will encounter... not even close. The menu, for the butter chicken pizza, comes with green onion and cilantro, which we immediately noticed. Not only that, the taste was rather bland. We called the establishment and told them of what was missing in the pizza. He asked if we were close by... hahaha, I just said, that is okay, we are not close by and would not be ideal for us to travel back just for those 2 ingredients. In my personal opinion and my sister, it's not that good of a pizza. At least that's our opinion. I was hoping different because we love good pizza and was hoping to become a regular customer. It's my first to try an Indian pizza, I was hoping to be amazed by the different culture in pizza making with different ingredients. Not what had expected and will not be patronizing them again, due to several factors.

The original plan was to grab some lunch items at Whole Foods, but who doesn't want to try a new restaurant?! Walking into the restaurant, it's a little unclear if you order the counter and they bring you food or if you're seated and you order at the table. We quickly figured out that your order at the counter and then grab one of the tables and they will bring you your order. I found the restaurant to be unkept, and most of the tables that did not have customers sitting at them were super dirty. The tables hadn't been cleaned from the previous customer/customers. We had already ordered and it was that quick mental conversation of are we expected to clean the table so that we can dine there or what. Thankfully, a bus boy appeared, and he didn't seem overly eager to want to clean the table that we were standing at but instead wanted to clean one that someone was dining at. It was kind of odd. He took a couple of swipes at the table and it really just removed the food that someone had dropped all over the table. Just not a comforting feeling when you know that you'll be dining in that same spot. Our food came out fairly quickly, and I was super excited to have a good meal. We ordered the lunch special, which included a lentil/garbanzo, bean side, CTM ( chicken, tikka masala), rice, and naan. We ordered one mango lassi to share because we figured it was easier to try it, then order too much. You can always order more, right?! The mango lassi was very underwhelming. It locked through mango flavor, and that hint of tanginess. I just felt like I was drinking warm mango juice. I definitely have had better. With the lunch plate, we upgraded the naan to the cheese naan. I love carbs like anyone else does, but I found this to be basically bread that someone had put curry flavor in with a couple of cubes of cheese. So basically curry powdered bread. Yuck. The CTM, I found the chicken to be very sparse in terms of the portion size, and the chicken was very rubbery. It was overcooked, and I specifically had asked for little to no spice. Apparently that request was ignored. The lentil and garbanzo beans were tasty, but the garbanzo beans were undercooked, incredibly hard, and the flavor profile was really weird. It couldn't decide if it was supposed to be spicy, spicy, and salty, or something in between. The rice was OK. It had far too much fenugreek in it, and again the flavor profile, even combined with the CTM just was a little offputting. The guy behind the counter was fairly friendly, but it wasn't that warm and inviting friendliness. Is this a place I would go back to? No, not at all The one thing that I really enjoyed was the artwork on the walls.

I can't recall if they were doing happy hour specials on DD at the time or if I had some kind of credit, but I ended up getting a $16.60 discount. With tax, tip, fees, and a $1.14 credit, this meal ended up being just under $20. Not bad for a solo lunch with leftovers. The tikka masala was nice and creamy. I like my curry with heat, so found myself wishing it was spicier. The naan were both soft and chewy. I love garlic, so liked that one slightly more. The samosas were soft on the inside and crispy outside. I found the mint chutney super salty which took away the refreshing aspect of it. Convenient and fast indian delivery if in Outer Richmond. The check-in process was extremely confusing, there were no clear signs indicating where dine-in guests should wait or check in. We stood in what looked like the line, only to realize later that other parties had somehow gone ahead of us and were seated first. When we tried to clarify things with the host, instead of helping, he was very rude and dismissive. He abruptly said something along the lines of, "There's only one line, can you make it quick? What's your party size?" He wasn't listening to us at all and made no effort to acknowledge how chaotic and unclear the system was. The interaction felt hostile and unwelcoming. We ended up leaving immediately because the entire experience felt unpleasant before we even got seated. For a restaurant in San Francisco, especially one representing Indian hospitality, I really expect a more organized and respectful front-of-house experience. Clear signage, a proper check-in system, and basic courtesy from hosts would go a long way.
