I really like the items offered on the menu, but I came here a couple of weeks ago and got the chicken tikka masala wrap and it actually made my tummy really hurt. A 3.5 for food and a 4 for their chai. I love their chai and how strong it is - you can get it hot or cold. It's pretty close to a flavorful HK milk tea (iykyk). As for food I ordered the Thali with two entrees, the chicken tikka masala and lamb curry. I enjoyed the lamb curry a lot but thought the portions were too small and lacked variety of sides compared to other Thali places I've tried. Order at the kiosk or cashier. No cash. I work at a neighborhood bar in the Castro and was craving Indian food to go. When it came time to paying the bill, I was told that if I wanted to pay cash, I would need to pay the exact amount. So I walked over to Dumpling King and gave them cash, meaning no service fee for them but included a fat tip for the server. That sounded like a challenge I was willing to take. The Chai was really good, I would definitely buy it again. The mango Lassi at around $7 was a miss. Super bitter. Intrigued by a Taco Tuesday offering, I wandered into Kasa and was looking at the various taco offerings before I remembered: The things I like swaddled in a tortilla are Mexican in origin. Hard pivot to the rest of the menu. My background isn't in design but I appreciate a menu that's easy to navigate and Kasa's could use some revision. I settled, eventually, on a 1/2-sized entree (Karahi Paneer) plus naan with which to sop it up. Kasa's web site speaks of vibrant flavors and fresh-ground spices. Others have remarked that the food isn't oily, as some assess Indian cuisine to be. Though my sampling of the menu was small and though I didn't dislike the Karahi Paneer, describing it as vibrantly flavorful would be inaccurate. It wasn't oily but nor was it flavorful. It was fine stopping far short of delicious. The hot, spongy naan proved a winning accompaniment. The overall yelp assessment of Kasa appears to be about 3.5 stars which feels right. This wasn't the best Indian fare I've eaten but it was good enough and I'd not be averse to sampling more widely from the menu to see if their other offerings pack more of a punch. read more

I, in all my life, have never made my homemade masala chai as bold and flavorful as Kasa's best in the City by the Bay. At first, I started with Blue Lotus chai made with star anise, and it had come out just plain spicy chai after my successful homemade brew. Next was both the masala chai spices and loose leaf Assam black tea leaves I bought from Rainbow Grocery Co-op. After my experimental brew, it came out a less spicy, less flavorful hot chai. So I thought I would turn to Kasa Indian Eatery. The way Kasa's chai wallah preps her chai, it's magically a real deal in the first few sips, but not as spicy as I expected. It's enough to conjure up the image of Mumbai's busiest streets. I will definitely have another cup of Kasa's Garam chai the next time I visit! That said, however, they literally have the exact same flavorfulness as well as that harmonious tastefulness of that phenomenal Indian Chai, to which I have literally been introduced years ago by a previous roommate of mine, namely Aaki. I've had the same chai many times in Pakwan in San Francisco as well, however Kasa's version of it is almost the same as Aaki's version, which my tastebuds were originally programmed by. I can't believe I haven't tried this place before. It's absolutely top tier, and some of the best dishes are kinda unique in SF, afaik. We decided to try this place for Restaurant Week, but we had to pick up the food since the restaurant wasn't open because of COVID-19 and the code wasn't working on the restaurant website to have it delivered. Also, we had a hard time finding parking that we had to double park while I got the food. However, we didn't have to wait long when we went to pick it up. For Restaurant Week, they had a $40 Family Meal that included: 1 Yogi Salad, 2 containers Cinnamon scented Basmati Rice, 4 Samosas with Chutney, 4 Large Naan, and 4 entrees of your choice. We decided to get the Mango Lassi and Kasa Chai drinks, the Gulab Jamun (traditional Indian Donut), as well as the Chicken Tikki Masala, Paneer Masala, Turkey, and Lamb as the entrees for the Family Meal. The drinks were okay. The Mango Lassi was kind if like having a fruity milkshake except with Yogert. Also, I wished it had more Mango flavor. As for the Kasa Chai, I have tasted better Chai Teas. I was hoping to have a really good Chai Tea because the signs and website was saying it was good, but it was a let down. The Gulab Jamun (traditional Indian Donut) was yummy. It was basically like a donut hole in sweet Rose Syrup. It was sweet but thankfully not too much. It was also really good warmed up. Just wish there was more than just two for the price I paid. The Chicken Tikki Masala and the Paneer Masala were yummy. It was your usual good tasting Masala sauce. Both the Grilled Chicken and the Paneer (Cheese) was good and had lots of flavor from the Masala Sauce. The Keema Muttar was okay, but it lacked flavor especially compared to the other entrees we picked. This needed more seasoning to add more flavor since the minced Turkey is so lean. The Lamb Curry was our favorite since it was flavorful and was thankfully not gammy. Also, the slow cooked Lamb and Potatoes were very tender and soft. The Yogi Salad had Salad Greens, Raw Vegetables, Rajma Beans, Corn, went well with the Citrus Dressing especially with the crunchy Fried Chickpea Puffs that gave it some texture. It made a combination and was a decent sized Salad. The Samosas were pretty good. They had a little kick to them, but thankfully not too much. Also, they had a nice flavor and were really good when hot. As for the sides, the Naan (Indian flat bread) was really big like the size of a tortilla for a Burrito. It definitely filled a plate and was as big as my head. Also, there was some nice char to the Naan, but I have tasted better. The Basmati Rice was soft and similar to other Basmati Rice. Overall, this was a great deal for a family of 3-4 people for Restaurant Week since it is very filling and was $25 off. Also, the best thing was the Lamb that was full of flavor. read more

Devoured two kati rolls (paneer masala and channa masala) with a chai and immediately ascended to American-style Indian food heaven. The spicy sauce is actually spicy and the chai isn't too sweet (and yes, that's a good thing). You order from a kiosk so you can easily make modifications and choose fillings/sauces. The curry was on the light side but it was ok, pretty decent. The lamb was very good, great texture for curry, with some fatty bits and juicy. The problem was the rice, which I kind of feel bad to rate it three stars. This was a delivery, the rice was cold but that's not the reason. It was in chunks, obviously the restaurant didn't take time to prepare it. And worse is that it wasn't broken rice but probably something like jasmine rice, which is unusual for curry dishes. I've been coming here for a long time. It's one of my favorite local eateries. My favorites are the keema and the chicken tikka, either in a taco or a kati roll. They also have great veggie specials. The chai is super authentic and to die for. They have a great make at home chai package that is easy to use. So, this is a tough one as I love Kasa's food and have been going there for years. So, that alone gets it to 2 stars. Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience on December 23. We got our order at 8:37 PM. The person working the register told us that they are placing the order in to go containers as they close at 9:00 PM but that we could eat there. We enjoyed our Kathi rolls and Thali and were starting to finish up when the clock struck 9:00. Immediately, the person at the register told us that they were closed and we needed to leave. We said ... just a few minutes as we were finishing up. She came back a minute later, told us that we were trespassing, and threatened to call the police. Moreover, a friend of hers entered the establishment, came up to our table, and began yelling at us to get out. It was mayhem. We placed our food in the trash receptacles and walked out, still being yelled at by her friend who did not even work there. I've never been accused of trespassing at any time in my life, much less 2 minutes after closing time at an establishment where I dropped $70. This is sad as the food is pretty great. read more

Not sure what changed at Kasa around 2019, but it is now bad in terms of the food quality. It makes me sad to write this poor review because it was once a favorite restaurant choice in our family. I walked to the bathroom and saw a stack of ready-made, packaged flat breads (it looked more like a tortilla and not roti). My dining partners curry appeared to have been previously frozen (even if it wasn't frozen, there was a clear change in the quality). Kasa is different now, and it is not in a good way. Hopefully management takes to heart the constructive feedback, and makes some changes. read more
