What makes it even better is the fact that the desserts are standouts too. Pistachio tres leches and pistachio/grape gelato were both amazing. The only downside here is the location itself. Zero seating and you're stand up eating both inside and outside. Given the popularity, it makes it very crowded, and very unpleasant.

My party brought two bottles of prosecco, fully prepared for a cozy, rustic evening. The server kindly offered to pop the first bottle, then brought out our glassware: heavy, standard water glasses, fresh out of the commercial dishwasher and literally piping hot. There is a special kind of absurdity in pouring crisp, ice-cold prosecco into a glass that feels like it was just pulled from the depths of hell. To top it off, nobody offered to keep our second bottle chilled. Minor detail, sure, but for a place with this level of cult status, the low-effort service immediately set the tone. To give credit where it's due, the ambiance is legitimately cool. It's dimly lit, atmospheric, and feels like step-back-in-time Brooklyn kitchen. Watching the pizza makers roll out dough using empty wine bottles before shoving them into the roaring brick oven gives off that warm, "Nonna's kitchen" charm. You want to love it. Then the food arrives, and the illusion shatters. Our server gave us the bare minimum rundown: "We have pizza, calzones, and tonight's special pasta." Zero detail, zero enthusiasm. We ordered the pizza and the calzone. The pizza was... fine. Completely fine. But calling this the best pizza in New York feels like collective mass delusion. If you've been to L'Industrie or Mama's Too, Lucali isn't even in the same stratosphere. Then came the calzone, which was allegedly stuffed with five cheeses. The server proudly named four, withholding the fifth as a "secret ingredient." A mystery cheese angle might be fun if the calzone blew your mind, but by the time I took a bite, the gimmick just felt tired. It was a perfectly average calzone wrapped in high-end gatekeeping. The grand finale, however, was the absolute kicker. Just under an hour into our meal, after overhearing the hostess realize she'd botched the table rotation, our server came over with an update: they had overbooked and needed our table. Her gracious solution? "You're welcome to pour the rest of your prosecco into your glasses and finish it outside!" The remaining, warm, prosecco that is... Let's recap the math: two hours waiting on a sidewalk at 2 PM, five hours of waiting for the reservation time, warm glasses for cold bubbles, middle-of-the-road pizza, and a boot out the door in under sixty minutes because they messed up their own seating chart. Disgraceful hospitality masked as old-school Brooklyn charm. If you love mediocre food, lukewarm prosecco in burning hot glassware, and being rushed out to the curb, Lucali is waiting for you. About 30 minutes after we had ordered, I asked our waiter where our food was. He apologized and admitted that he had forgotten to put the order in. By that point, we had already watched other tables receive their food, including people who had arrived well after us. We continued waiting, and after roughly 40 minutes or more, our food still had not arrived. At that point, the dining experience was already ruined and we decided to leave. Ironically, just as we were getting ready to go, the food finally started coming out. I told them we no longer wanted it. The waiter did apologize again and offered us a pizza to take with us, which I assume was complimentary, but by then we were simply ready to leave. Even paying the bill became unnecessarily drawn out. We were charged the full amount for the salad, beer, and wine. I sat with a $50 bill ready to pay, was handed the check, and then ended up standing around for another five minutes waiting for someone to actually take the money. There was no apology from the person handling the payment. I understand that mistakes happen, and I appreciated that our waiter admitted he had forgotten to place the order. But when a restaurant makes that kind of mistake, the recovery matters. After waiting that long, watching later-arriving customers get served, and then having difficulty simply paying and leaving, an apology and a pizza at the very end didn't really fix the experience. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I can't say the service lived up to the restaurant's reputation.

What impresses me most is how naturally Roberta's became more than a restaurant. Food, music, parties, outdoor spaces, and an extraordinary mix of people all seemed to converge here, giving the place a cultural gravity that could never have been designed by committee. It remains one of those places that instantly takes me back to my bachelor years and an especially fun chapter of my time in the city, when Bushwick felt endlessly creative, and Roberta's seemed to sit comfortably at its center. But otherwise, they were just mini bites of dough. Regular slice - smelled like burnt plastic/paint. Tasted the same. So much so that I spit out the one bite I took. Couldn't eat more. Tried the crust alone, which tasted fine, so I'm pretty sure it's either that rancid tasting sauce they use, or a combination of that and the cheese. White slice - smelled just as bad as the plain slice, but tasted slightly better. The ricotta was actually quite tasty, and the mozzarella was of ok quality - I've certainly had worse. I threw some Tabasco on it, and was glad, because it helped me to actually enjoy it, by masking the awful smell. BBQ chicken slice - The bottom of it was completely burnt. And I usually enjoy a slightly charred crust, but this was so blackened that it was inedible (see picture I took). That pizza shouldn't have been sold to customers - it was completely ruined. I cut the bottom off to redeem what was left of the slice. The chicken was overpoweringly sweet, and everything else was bland. The dough was far too thick. I wouldn't recommend it. Beef patty - wasn't as filled as I would've liked, and the crust was a bit on the mushy side - not flaky, but otherwise tasted quite good. One of the better items I purchased. Spinach roll - like both pizza slices, had that burnt plastic/paint smell. Also, they sprinkle the dough with sesame seeds, and though I'm normally a fan of them, I found that the flavor didn't pair well with the sauteed spinach and cheese for some reason. But once I scraped the sesame seeds off, I must say, the spinach roll was *quite* good. If I was starving, I'd go here for the spinach rolls and beef patties, but little else. I wouldn't recommend getting anything here involving tomato sauce. *Update* - It's the morning after I ordered take-out from Five Brother's and I woke up with excruciating stomach pain. Can't say if it was due to the food here, or not, (which is why I'm sticking with 2 stars instead of 1), but I can't help but be reminded of the rancid smelling sauce from yesterday. I think it's safe to say that I will most likely not be returning here, and certainly wouldn't recommend this place.
