Anderson's Coffee Company is one of the coolest stores I have been to in some time. A friend recommended this store for coffee. They sell coffee by the pound, likely for those serious coffee lovers who have fancy expensive coffee machines. I was looking for a latte. Bad news...this coffee company sells coffee by the pound not lattes (hence the name). Good news... they sell drip coffee for $2.00 + tax. What a deal! This family owned shop has been roasting beans locally since 1972 and focuses on helping customers brew excellent coffee at home rather than serving coffee drinks on premises. According to the store manager, Mr. Anderson occasionally comes into the store. The selection of freshly roasted beans is rather larger, with store favorites like Guatemala Antiqua, Dark Sumatra and Arabian Mocha cited as most popular. Coffee cost on average $19 per pound. In addition to coffee, the store carries loose leaf teas, mugs, candy, cards, coffee pot sweaters, brewing equipment, and small other gift items, to name just a few items. Since I have accidentally discovered this place last week, I have not shut up about it and have told many friends about this hidden gem. Not only is it small business and family-owned (which I love), they have a variety of artisan chocolates, mugs, and cute cards in addition to their extensive coffee collection. They have a room that is devoted to only Miya products, which is my favorite Japanese teaware brand for anyone looking for good quality teapots! I've been buying my coffee here since I first moved to Austin in 1974. They were the first to fresh roast their coffees twice a week locally. Even when I lived in the Caribbean a couple years I would have them ship it. The Costa Rican is wonderful whether by the cup or espresso or cappuccino. They stopped selling by the cup during Covid but are doing it again. What a great break if I'm roaming around Central Austin to swing by, shop, and have a fresh cup of Java! Love this location and the staff is always nice. You can tell the management cares and keeps things running smoothly here. Nothing compares to Summermoon's coffee and Moonmilk on this Earth and I miss it every time I travel. I purchase t-shirts and candles to show off my love. I prefer Wintermoon, but thats just me! Even if you don't wanna buy anything from this place, it's worth dropping in for the incredible coffee smell, that is if you like the smell of coffee beans/coffee. Nice variety of beans from around the world at reasonable prices in my opinion. Friendly staff. They have other stuff too like tease and cups, and things that go with coffee and tea. Frankly, none of this stuff interests me, so I just go for the coffee on a regular basis as we grind our own beans. The beans are always fresh tasting when ground. Our Airbnb host told us about Anderson's Coffee Company and we were in the area for breakfast while visiting Austin, so we stopped in. If you like coffee or tea, come here, but don't walk in expecting to buy a coffee or tea beverage to go - this is solely a roaster and gift shop that sells bags of coffee. We were welcomed in right away as we entered and helped with some recommendations in choosing a bag of beans - the employees were helpful and really nice. I had fun browsing the retail area with lots of mugs, coffee cups, travel mugs, tea kettles and tea pots, did I mention the mugs? They have a LOT of mugs. Nate got one that is heat sensitive with birds on it that change color as you add hot coffee. There seemed to be a slight emphasis on Japanese and other Asian items as well as several cat themed items, so I was smiling a lot as I kept noticing cat things. They had a whole display of fancy chocolate, some was pretty expensive. It was fun just looking around! It was a bustling shop as they were packaging up tons of coffee to ship out. Nate bought a pound of the Arthur blend which was recommended by the person helping us. Overall a very nice shop and highly recommended for any coffee lover. read more

When you make your way to the counter to be helped by their friendly and knowledgeable staff, you can then take home those fresh roasted beans too. Walked into the shop and it smelt like coffee and dog urine. They allow animals in the shop and it has a strong dog urine odor. I think employees are use to the smell. It was our first time and the stench was strong. Place was a let down. Sign says it is a coffee shop, but they don't sell brewed coffee. They only sell coffee beans and coffee mugs. If you want the best beans, best teas, and or coffee supplies, candy, cards, gifts, then you need to come here. A well know establishment on Kerbey Lane and I promise you as beginner or coffee connoisseur, you won't be disappointed. The staff are beyond friendly and so darn knowledgeable. There isn't a bean they don't know. Always willing to recommend a tasty treat. Coffee beans rotate and then there are their amazing house blends. KG always steers me right with her recommendations. I recently purchased the Arabian mocha, small bean coffee described as a bit fruity. I never thought coffee to be fruity but OMG this is beyond delicious. OK, here's the thing. I barista'ed my way through college at a place that roasted their own coffee beans and I know good coffee. And, I've tried all the local roasters here in Austin. Anderson Coffee is HANDS DOWN THE BEST. And, it's not even close. They get great beans, and have that fantastic oiliness on them from roasting them perfectly. I can just make myself the most heavenly cup of coffee using their stuff - when I pour water in my pour-over, I get this amazing crema-thing going on in a way that I do not with other roasters here in town. Mwah, chef's kiss. Minor nits: their in-store experience is kinda lame because they are not open very often and they don't actually serve any coffee. They tease me mercilessly with all those amazing coffee smells and then serve me...zippo, zilch. Not kind. Anyway, with all that in mind, you might as well order online from them as go in store, unless you need a consult on what to buy. Their in-store staff is super knowledgeable, and I came away with a couple of surprise choices that have been pretty fantastic. Anderson's is an Austin classic (around 50 years or so) the best coffee in Austin, by far. Many roasts and grinds depending on your tastes and needs, locally freshly roasted from select beans, fair trade and/or organic, selected by very experienced buyers so never any corners cut (I've been going and buying for nearly 45 years and went to school with the owners sons at AHS). I am so happy I finally had the chance to try this place!! My husband and I bought our wedding bands (and engagement ring) at the jeweler across the street from this place and ever since we picked them up, I had the biggest curiosity to go in here. A mask is required to go in, they have some as soon as you walk in just in case you forget. I think we went during a slightly busy time because there were like 4 different people checking out customer's, no official line, and I was a little overwhelmed. I felt like I had to hurry up and make a decision but luckily, the lady was able to recommend me a few different roasts depending on what I liked.... I told her I like medium-dark roast coffee.... I bought the Holiday blend which has been AMAZING for my lattes in the morning, it is very smooth and creamy and just PERFECT. I also bought the Vienna and Mexico Chapas. The Vienna was a bit darker or more bold I should say than the Holiday blend but was still very tastey with milk and vanilla syrup ;) The Chapas was a perfect medium roast that I wish I would have bought more of. This place shares a parking lot with a few other businesses but you can find lots of parking off the street. Overall, this place was amazing! They also sell tea, mugs, chocolate, coffee brewing equipment, jam, cookies, etc. Definitely check this place out if you are needing some fresh coffee beans, you will not be disappointed!!! :) read more

There are lots of coffee cups and mugs. Lots of coffee makers, grinders and various accessories. The staff is helpful and mostly patient. I'm often amazed at the questions they are asked. Anderson is such a wonderful coffee seller. The workers here are so friendly, and they give samples of roasts out at their mini coffee station. The place smells strongly of good coffee, which is always a sign that a place sells strong, fragrant coffee. However, if you're a beginner coffee drinker beware. This shop is geared toward coffee drinkers that like their coffee dark. Anderson's does not make milkshakes with a teeny bit of coffee like Starbucks. My household enjoys drinking their dark Sumatra, and have doing so for decades. We even had Anderson coffee beans shipped to Virginia during our short period of living there because no place in Richmond could hold a candle to the quality of Anderson's coffee. As for the parking, you shouldn't have any problems since the other businesses don't have much business. Don't let the cars parked next to the road fool you, because those are people trying to eat at Russel's or Kerbey Lane Cafe. It's a shame that Russel's, the restaurant next-door, did not start supplying their coffee from Anderson until recently despite them being next to each other. read more

Walking by headed to Kerbey Lane and the smell of high quality coffee stopped me in my tracks. I walked in for the first time looking for a latte, and after speaking to a very pleasant gentleman discovered they sell coffee in bulk, but had cups of coffee for sale for $1.00. Since I was new, he said the coffee was on the house. I tried a Kenyan brew with real sugar cubes that was very pleasant. Couldn't walk out without purchasing a pound of their Costa Rican coffee. The gentleman even asked me which coffee brewer I have at home so he could get the grind just right. Foot traffic was pretty busy (people who had clearly been there before) which was surprising for a place that I wouldn't have noticed if the coffee smell hadn't stopped me. For the home brewer, Anderson's beans can't be beaten. The quality of the coffee you'll make is so unmatched by any other coffee beans I've tried. My personal favorites are mocha Java and Jakarta. I like to mix it up with some other blends, too-- like if I've missed their hours, I'll go to Russell Bakery & grab a bag of their blend. Not only great for buying coffee beans, it's also where I've bought all of my coffee brewing supplies-- chemex, filters, coffee bean grinder, electric kettle, airtight containers, and more. Anderson's. A magical haven of creaky wooden floors, steaming coffee, fairy lights strung across the walls. A place preserved throughout the years since its opening in 1972 - a place, in fact, that my aunt frequented thirty years ago. It's an Austin icon, a coffee lover's dream, and a four-eyed foodie's world to conquer. Upon entering, I always start on the left side of the store so that I can worship floor-to-ceiling shelves lined with mugs - in short, my happy place. A glance to the right lifts me higher and higher, because behold, sugary splendor: a table piled high with cookies, wafers, shortbread. I turn into the back room to take in too many tea bags to count, along with bars of chocolate, jars of local jelly and pickles, delicate china, and tea cosies with signs assuring me that it's not too good to be true: "yes, we do sell tea cosies!" It is with immense willpower that I turn away from tiny tea strainers and fancy French presses and force myself to the front counter. I've digressed from my original purchase plan only slightly: somehow, an Anderson's mug and two boxes of dark chocolate cookies are before me. I ask for a pound of the Sumatra after I've made my way through a small paper cup of its rich, smooth goodness. I indulge in the wait before the front counter as Bennie and the Jets serenade me, taking in the names of the different blends. Arabian mocha, Jakarta Blend, Kenya Fancy, Red Sea Blend, all carefully selected, each with its own rich story and fragrance. And the storyteller himself is before me, Jamie Anderson, complete with silver hair, bib apron and bow tie. He's kind, attentive, humble but also expert. I watch him answer any question from a customer, joke with his employees, lovingly explain his way through the many virtues of the Mocha Java. All too soon, my purchases are bundled into a brown paper bag and I'm stepping out underneath the long red awning into a day that is newly full of promise. I pull out from my parking space and let a woman cross in front of me, on her way into Anderson's. She dangles an empty mug in her hand that is soon to be filled with a one-dollar cup of coffee. After more than 25 years I have completely given up Anderson's Coffee because of the service issues. The best coffee in Austin, the worst accommodation of customers. During the pandemic they refused to conduct curbside pick-up like every other store in town. How hard would it have been to place the person's bag outside the door when they arrived at the store? Instead, they charged 12.95 for shipping, which essentially doubled the cost of the coffee. Not feasible or ethical. When they finally opened the store again, they now refuse to take phone orders and insist that you come in and wait your turn. Mind you they're still requiring masks, so they have a concern about Covid, but their new policy requires that everyone wait together in that small space! Moreover, because of traffic growth in Austin there is absolutely no parking. I drove from really far away on a Saturday, orbited the area 3 times looking for a space, then gave up and went home. Their beans are roasted expertly to fully enjoy their nuances and they have a great selection from various regions around the world. I went to Anderson Coffee to buy an overpriced ($162.32) burr grinder because they are a local company. The Baratza grinder is simple enough to operate with only two pieces to install, a collar and gasket. The grinder didn't work out-of-the-box, so I took it back with the receipt the day after I bought it to exchange it for one that worked, but they wanted to "take a look at it". I got a call a day later and so I trucked back up there to discuss options. I was told that I broke the machine and I could order and pay for the replacement part. I know I didn't break the machine because the broken part (plastic wheel tabs which move the coffee) are located under a housing secured by a wingnut, deep within the grinder and i didn't touch it. Furthermore I couldn't even grind the first bin of coffee. Regardless, their policy should cover day-old equipment accompanied with a receipt. Fortunately it won't be hard to find good coffee and good service at a more affordable price elsewhere. I will not recommend this busness to anyone as they don't stand behind their products. read more
