Hot Latte
Richard R.

Another adventure on my Seattle trip was Ancient Gate! Fell in love with the interior and how cozy everything was. Not a lot of coffee shops in LA really have a bar to sit and conversation with the barista so it was cool to see the relationships between customer and barista. The workers were really warm and friendly. And the Latte was perfect, amazing temperature, creaminess from the steamed milk and the espresso was smooth. I look forward to visiting again when I'm in Seattle! IG: Lovingyourtaste

I had a lovely meeting and work session at ancient gate this Thursday morning. They take the quality of their drinks seriously, and have the most elegant space to match. The space has everything you need -- outlets, WiFi, bathroom, and tables that seat 1-6+. The barista was very knowledgeable about the beans and even gave me some extra drinking chocolate with my bicerin because I said I love dark chocolate. It was delicious and I had a great productive day!

The ambience here is so classy and the music is super chill. Very bright, upscale and uplifting vibe. I got an iced vanilla latte and it was strong and delicious. There's just a simple menu of some coffee options and I plan to try them all. The bathroom is also very clean as well. Perfect spot to just relax, sip some coffee and chat with friends. I love the professional service as well. When you order coffee, the barista will give you some options in terms of nutty or floral flavor profile so be prepared to choose! Don't be abroad to ask questions about the origins of the coffee.

In love with the cafe's space and vibe. It's elegant, hushed, airy. It's a stark contrast with the UDistrict area. The paintings hanging on the walls by the entrance are lovely touches. I can't speak to the quality of the coffee yet and will need to try more of the single origin drips, but the bicerin was quite delightful and not too sweet.

I want to rate it more because of the kind workers but I am rating based on drinks. To start off, the vibe of the place is gorgeous. It feels elegant and elevated which is very different than the vibes of the surrounding coffee shops. The baristas are super sweet as well. This all depends on what you look for in a coffee shop, personally I need some kind of specialty syrups. They only have regular lattes with regular syrups and one specialty drink which was strawberry. I was just a little bit disappointed since the last 3 shops I went to the specialty drink was some type of strawberry. The drink was average, I could taste the syrup in the drink which is nice but I wouldn't crave it or rave about it. Overall the vibe is nice and if you're into straight coffee it's a place for you, but if you chase funky new flavor combos this place might not be your regular pit stop.

I had work around the University of Washington today and stopped by Ancient Gate Coffee. Honestly, the surrounding area isn't the best, but the moment you step inside, it feels like a completely different world. The shop has a cozy, vintage vibe with comfortable, roomy seating that makes you want to settle in. I love the décor and the ambiance--it's super chill, with friendly people all around. It's quiet, welcoming, and a perfect spot to take a break or get some work done. They offer a nice variety of pastries in the morning, though by the time I came around 1 PM the pastry case was nearly empty--so if you're hoping for something sweet, come earlier in the day. The barista was really friendly and helpful, and the coffee itself is amazing. They use local roasters for their beans, and if you enjoy a bright, acidity-forward coffee, this place is a gem. Stopping by for a quality cup in the middle of the day is absolutely worth it. With so many Asian fusion spots along the Ave, Ancient Gate Coffee blends right into the neighborhood vibe while still feeling like its own little hideaway. I think I just found my favorite coffee place in the University District in Seattle!

Local beans!

Wow, what a find. Got a lighter roast Ethiopian espresso (they have multiple local bean options that seem to change with some frequency) which had a bright fruit and tea character, a nice full flavored espresso that immediately felt on par with our favorites. Also got a cortado with the Colombian bean that had a lovely nutty characteristic that nicely complemented the high quality milk used, and the bicerin was so perfect--a deep, nuanced, fresh ground chocolate flavor with just a bit of sweetness so you can really focus on the beautiful character of the chocolate and the espresso. On top of all that, the guy running the shop seemed so passionate about the quality of everything in the shop, friendly, and knowledgeable, and the interior was so bright and cozy, a perfect place to just sit and chill for a bit. Looking forward to coming back next time I visit Seattle!

Great place to grab coffee and or study/work/sit! Large seating area and very nice too. The seaside here was spectacular. They have lots of unique options ranging from nutty or fruity tones or coffee. I recommend and would come back!

Ancient Gate stands out in U-District, especially in a neighborhood full of tinted windows, gates, and graffiti. It has five full-width glass windows! You can't find a coffee place as spacious and elegant as this in the Seattle area; it feels quite out of place. Espresso is strong and affordable. They have a signature Italian drink called bicerin which is a very expensive $9 mocha, but very much worth the splurge if you want something different. Having one bougie drink is very appropriate for a place as posh and cozy as this. I love places that offer a variety of seating options and you get just that here: sofas, tables, bar seating. Even a very, very big and clean bathroom. Outlets every 2 seats against the wall -- good for working. Perfect place whether you're meeting up with a friend, studying, or just want authentic and non-flavored coffee.

Unique featured roast I sampled (11/8/24)

I'm always on the lookout for new tea & coffee indie spots. Ancient Gate Coffee came to my attention yesterday before an errand in Fremont. This beautiful cafe space is located in Seattle's University District on "The Ave" close to 47th, across the street from Tea Republik & Supreme. It's a royal pain to find street parking coming from Shoreline yesterday and Edmonds today. Pro tip: park along 15th or Brooklyn, instead of University Way for cheaper paid parking rates. It is also on major Metro bus routes and a short walk from the UDistrict light rail stop. There's a variety of onsite seating available and large windows allowing for lots pf natural light. The interior is clean and sleek. Visit #1 (11/8/24, btw 1130-12noon) was very pleasant. A sunny midday. Lots to take in with decor, vibe, and the memorable mocha that I forgot to photograph. Additional info gleaned from the welcoming bearded owner: long time dream to open such a spot. Roasts beans in his garage. Doesn't have a commercial spot to scale up, yet. So for now, the cafe uses coffee roasts from Makeworth based up in Bellingham. Another northbound bookmark after trying Makeworth at another site. Note: beverage size offered is 12 ounces maximum. So on those days if I need more volume, guess I'll have to be a two fisted drinker or have a cortado and a mocha, lol. I was also given a drip sample of the Makeworth Black Sheep roast from China. I was picking up grassy, as well as, the dark chocolate notes. I thought about that mocha and wished I had reversed my errand order to allow full savoring onsite. I did notice by noon, the cafe was packed. Visit #2 (11/9/24, btw 1315-1445) finally after my determination to find street parking, despite competing with the Saturday Farmers Market on this rainy afternoon. This time I was able to savor my mocha (=latte w/organic chocolate syrup) and can attest that this place is hopping to nearly closing time at 3pm. I was just offered another chai sample and told of their drinking chocolate. Guess note to self for future visit(s). Definitely, two back to back visits sold me. It's a pricey indulgence factoring in my bad carbon footprint, street parking, and nearly $9 with tax & tip for each 12oz mocha. However, one pays for quality and supporting a local indie. Highly recommended!

There's no business like show business, they are flashy, but the movie kind, where it feels natural and makes dialogue really special here. Sit down with a friend, talk to the brew guy about anything, be whoever you think you should be here because it's a good place to start something...I'm sure a lot of great things will happen after a perfect cup of tea.

Breve Cortado, Guatemalan beans. Very good!

Right to the side of the city of Seattle customer service center, which we visited for some passport stuff. What a cute little place! Very clean, open and bright, it's small but quite inviting. Coffee and pastry selections are very limited, gives some exclusivity vibes. Got two Cortado (one breve) with two different beans selections, and a bicerin. Had a friendly chat with the barista (maybe owner) and enjoyed our espresso drinks thoroughly.

Vanilla latte

I love this place!! Beautiful inside and friendly staff. I got my usual (vanilla latte) and it was very good. Great spot to come study or get work done. They have some more "gathering/conversational" spaces (couches) and then more individual seating (bar area). Definitely will be returning.

But honestly? The energy worked. The staff was moving with that calm, unbothered flow only seasoned baristas have. Friendly, attentive, and somehow keeping the line moving without making anyone feel rushed. Respect. Light was flooding every corner; that soft Seattle glow that makes you want to pull out your journal and pretend you live inside a cozy indie film. Ventilation was perfect. Temperature was perfect. Seating options? Abundant. And not the awkward wobbly kind either. This spot is built for lingering. I grabbed a latte, sat down, and immediately fell into an art journaling trance. There's something about being surrounded by curated shelves of books and cute little treasures that just unlocks your brain. It's the kind of place where you look up after ten minutes and somehow an hour passed. This was my first visit, but it's already on my list of "places I'll actually come back to and get work done." A rare category, honestly. If you're looking for a café that feels like a creative reset button; this is a great one.

They have a variety of waffles and sandwiches on the menu that seemed appetizing however because I got here after 3:30 the kitchen was closed but they have a variety of pre-made burritos and sandwiches that you could still buy. I love that they have a huge variety of non-dairy milks including soy which is my favorite. I wanted to get the turmeric latte however I mentioned that I couldn't wait to see the foam art and the Baristas told me that due to the light color of the latte, it would be difficult to see the foam art so I instead ordered the red velvet latte with soy and it was as delicious as it was cute! I also got the egg and sausage cheese burrito and it was chock full of eggs and sausage... very filling. The decor and seating options are plentiful upstairs and downstairs. They also have free pineapple infused water for guests to drink which I appreciate. Seems like a popular spot for UW students to do work as there are lots of outlets for their laptops.

It took about 5-7 minutes to get our drinks, and the place was packed around 1:30 pm on a Saturday.
