When we got there a private party was booked inside so only outside seating was available. Fine. There were only two other parties seated but a request for the open table by the canal was denied - no reason given. Service was very slow. No one checked on us after taking the order and delivering food. And I would agree there were plenty of wait staff flying all around but no one checked in on us ever until we asked for the bill. Another phenomenal night at Anchor Down Dockside-large crowd (partly due to Father's Day and great weather), and service was impeccable and food amazing as always. Baked clams were light and Summery-ended up doubling the order! burrata was just the right firmness to offset the vegetables and lightly accented with balsamic. Mussels Thai Curry was sweet (not spicy) and generous - highly recommend using the sweet rolls to sop up the broth. Cod oreganate was flaky perfection. and the lobster roll CT-style was as fresh as anything. Drinks were top notch - a smoked old fashioned was the highlight, but our wine drinkers praised the Pinot Grigio and buttery Chardonnay. Made an appointment for 7:15. Arrived 7:00. Told to wait. At 8 PM decided to walk out. The service was horrible. Why did they even bother to give us an appointment. When we got there we were asked to wait in lounge area. We were completely ignored the whole time. Even had one of the waitresses accidentally hit me in the back with a chair she was carrying and didn't even say sorry or excuse me. We were in no mood to say there any longer or give them our business. The valet worker does deserve 5 stars though. He has a tough job with a tiny parking lot. read more

We been to this location many times under previous ownership and a different name. I was surprised to learn that this restaurant change hands since I found the location and the food very good. We came for lunch on a quiet Thursday and found the menu had a Mediterranean flare with american menu items as well. I had the Falafel sandwich which was good. My fiancé took me to Cardoon tonight for my birthday dinner. We are big fans of Anchor Down, their sister restaurant, so I was excited to try Cardoon. It's very similar to Anchor Down in that it is on the water, smaller, and intimate. However Cardoon offers a warm, more cozy environment that I can totally get down with. Wait staff was very nice and helpful. Answered my questions and offered suggestions as I hoped they would. Bonus points came when we were told it was also restaurant week! Cha-Ching!!! Upon being seated we were given pita and olive oil- good. Pita was grilled which I loved but would have enjoyed a little seasoning if possible. That's me being picky, definitely not needed but if I had to wish for something... I guess that would be it? I was struggling HARD on choosing an entree. Scallops sounded awesome. Salmon came with gigantes which I can barely resist. And then the strip steak. My fiancé got the restaurant week deal- she chose a chopped salad that was delicious and the perfect size. She also got the salmon- which was incredible. This came with gigantes and sautéed spinach. The spinach however was a little too salty for her to enjoy. I, in turn, got the strip steak. Bold move for me since I'm such a fish lover but hey, why not? It was delicious! Huge- covered in some sort of butter sauce with fingering potatoes and string beans. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the roasted cauliflower side. This was the best surprise of the night. I anticipated your standard roasted cauliflower- maybeeeee jazzed up with some garlic? No. This was amazing. In truth, I don't even know what was actually on it. They had the perfect balance of char and sweetness. I don't know. But what I do know is that I can't wait to get them again! To finish off, my fiancé ordered the baklava funnel cake. Which sounds awesome, looks great, but wasn't really all it was cracked up to be. Good, not great. Bon and I were thrilled that Saturday night was no humidity and only seasonally warm so we could dine outside on the Patio at Cardoon on a waterway by the Great South Bay. We had reserved a table on Yelp and our rezzy was awaiting our arrival at 9 pm sharp. We got a waterside table overlooking beautiful boats and calm water which sparked our desire to have drinks. We got a Grey Goose shaken up with a twist and a Cabo Wabo Anejo shaken up with a lime....both strong and just what we needed !! Once settled, we ordered appys: Grilled Octopus and Taramousalata....We had both of these last visit and they were better this visit. Chef Stephen sent out a Cuttlefish appy for us to try and it too tasted of the sea...we really enjoyed the prep and care put into these dishes. After ordering the 2nd round of drinks we went for the mains: Bon got a thick, beautifully prepared Swordfish and I the Lamb Porterhouse prepared rare....Thanks Chef Stephen and crew for putting in the love while preparing these dishes...it showed! Our server Joe was so friendly and made sure we had whatever we needed to make dinner perfect...We closed with a wonderful Pistachio Gelato....what a great way to cleanse the pallet. We had reservations for 8 PM and we showed up a bit early so we expected to wait but upon entering and talking to other customers they have also been waiting an hour and a half for their reservations. We were a little set off by that but decided to wait anyway because we heard it was good however it had rained for about 10 minutes before so everyone including staff we're running around like crazy like chickens with no heads. Unfortunately this is not opening day so an outdoor restaurant should be prepared for the rain and have a back up plan and see if those people inside. We had waited about 35 minutes and saw people that were sitting before us that had came after us. I feel like it was just unprofessional and unfortunately I guess we won't be trying their food. I'm going to start by saying that I debated leaving this review. Every restaurant has an off day, but if I was the owner I'd want to know about this experience. 6 of us were trying to decide where to eat lunch after a day out on the boat. A friend called to find out if there were any boat slips available. The woman that answered the phone asked her how would she know. We should've turned around right then and there. Someone else told her that there was one available so we went. There were maybe 3 other tables when we sat down. Our waitress came over right away and got our drink orders. My husband ordered a spicy margarita which tasted like jalapeño flavored water. We ordered a few apps for the table, calamari and wings. Both were good. For lunch we ordered a chopped salad, falafel balls, a burger, a chicken sandwich, a lobster roll, I ordered a tuna poke bowl, and my husband ordered a tuna bahn mi which we were really excited about since we love tuna and bahn mi sandwiches. Burger was ordered med rare and my husband specifically asked if the tuna was served rare and was told yes. We also ordered another round of drinks. At some point I got up to use the ladies room and noticed that we were the only table in the restaurant. I also noticed that the entire staff (busser, servers, host, bartender, and manager) were all standing around inside talking. I wouldn't have thought twice about that except for the rest of our experience. We waited about 10 minutes for our next round of drinks. Except for a Tito's and soda which took another 10 minutes. We started looking around after about 30 minutes trying to figure out what was taking so long with our food. When it was brought to our table my husband instantly looked at his sandwich and sent it back. It looked like straight up tuna out of a can. We could hear our waitress yelling to the kitchen that it was overcooked. The burger was med well to well. My poke bowl was not what I was expecting, but it was delicious. The best part of everyone's lunch was the fries, they were amazing. After about another 10 minutes my husband asked the waitress to cancel his food as we were all almost done. She came back a few minutes later with his sandwich in her hand. He took one bite and made a face. He ended up eating almost 1/2 of it before admitting that it was fishy. 2 of us tried a piece and it was inedible. We called the waitress over to tell her and ask her to please take it off of our bill. Now here's the kicker... The manager comes over and asks what was wrong with his meal. He tells her that the first one was way over cooked and the second was fishy. She asks if we know what a bahn mi is and if we knew what we were ordering. I told her yes we love bahn mi and we love tuna but if it's an issue to take it off the bill don't worry about it. My husband told her AGAIN that the tuna was fishy. "Ooooooh ok I'll take it off the bill", which she did. We then heard her yelling into the kitchen that the tuna was fishy. The entire experience was expensive, unprofessional, and cringe-worthy. If you come here.. be prepared to wait over an HOUR for your food. I've been here twice on two separate occasions and the kitchen always seems to be backed up. I ordered the grilled Bronzino and it was OVERCOOKED. I couldn't even cut the meat into bite sized pieces because it was so dried out. Save your money (and your time) and avoid this place. First off my wife could not get a Pina Colada because the "machine" was broken. Bloody Mary had a very peculiar (not at all in a good way) taste so we went to beer. Those were warm. On to the food - baked clams had no hint of clam at all, just bread crumbs. Raw clams were not so good - they seemed off in flavor. Mussels were very good though. Main courses - skirt steak came out not undercooked, but purple and raw. Shrimp Scampi tasted like we were at the Olive Garden. The entrees ordered by my boyfriend and his son were disappointing. Lamb was ordered medium, It arrived rare. When sent back for cooking appropriately, it came back the same. Beef hamburger was also rare, entirely red inside. They did not charge for the hamburger, but still, the point is when you go out to eat, you want to enjoy what you order. I'd been itching to come to Cardoon for the outdoor view for a while now, I finally stopped in on a sunny afternoon for dinner and made a reservation through the Yelp app. Man, it was a beautiful, beautiful view!! We were seated at one of the middle tables next to the dock and I had a direct view of the houses on the water, watching ducks swim by, a truly calming vibe here at Cardoon. Ambiance here was calm and quiet despite being a full house. My SO and I both ordered the chick-pea crusted salmon as some other diners ordered it and it looked stunning. I ordered a pomegranate mojito and it was very refreshing. As we waited we munched on some pita bread and olive oil which was fresh and warm, a good snack that left us wanting more. After about 20 minutes our salmon arrived and it was juicy, a hefty portion, and had a thick crust of chickpea on top. It was served over a salad that had chickpeas, cucumber, and tomato. It was crisp and refreshing, and plated eloquently with a curved scoop of hummus. Man we devoured that salmon and got so full we didn't have any room to look at the dessert menu....truly tragic. The staff was friendly and attentive, highly recommend this place. Frank T beat me to these words...." What a night, outdoor moonlight dining on the water on NOVEMBER 3...." Lol...Its true. And Frank would know, because he and his wife, Terri, were there enjoying the exact same dreamy evening as Lee and I were, a mere 5 feet away. We originally had reservations for Saturday, the next evening, but when the temp hit 73 on this Full Moon lit night, I knew that there would be something special in store for Lee, myself and our 16 y/o daughter. We arrived for a 6:30 pm reservation easily booked via the Yelp site, sun had already set, to an open patio with a roaring fire ( albeit propane, still welcoming and toasty). Spooky moon lit sky and just a spectacular temperature. Every table seemed giddy with this delightful outdoor treat. With the green lit palm trees, we admitted that it felt more like it was holiday time down in Florida than November in New York. There were an abundance of menus...it was still restaurant week, so there was that 3 course, 28.95 special which appealed to Lee and he ordered from that menu, see his review. Melissa, had her eyes set on the handheld falafel off of the regular menu which she found to be a tad bit awkward to handle and she felt was a bit more bean tasting than the actual chick pea consistency that she is familiar with, but enjoyed it.( Yes, chick peas are a garbanzo bean, she knows). Better she added, were the amazing fries. There was a happy hour menu, but that stated " at the bar only" so I assume it found its way onto our table to showcase the delicious sounding specialty cocktails. Then there was the very diverse regular menu with exciting apps, mains and desserts. As soon as I saw a whole Dourade, in a sun-choke purée, with asparagus, fava bean, lemon, olive and caper relish, offered on the traditional menu, I knew that would be my choice and I didn't need to look any further. More importantly, from dining at Anchor Down, I knew that this was a kitchen that certainly knows how to do a whole fish, plus the first photo that I saw posted by the owner showed a fantastic looking whole fish. It was a no brainer. Because those not in the know may assume that the customer prefers their fish de boned or even worse, beheaded, I deliberately used my hands to demonstrate "whole fish"... Slowly uttering "head, tail, bones and all", to our fabulous waitress Doreen, who chuckled and reiterated..." Head, tail, guts and all". I eat a whole fish wherever I can when dining out and I've experienced this kind of " miscommunication " now and then, best to be specific and make certain that Doreen got the gist. So imagine my utter dismay when a seemingly healthy and robust fish was placed in front of me head and gill-less !!! Could this be the new GMO fish of the future...HEADLESS ??? Lol !!! Because our daughter looked at me and said " please don't", I let this one go. Too much negativity in the world these days to squabble about a fish with no head. So, uncharacteristically, I agreed to keep my mouth shut and enjoyed this really, delicious headless " whole" fish !!! I forgot to mention that to begin with, we also shared the well loved and frequently reviewed Octopus, tonight prepared differently than was listed on the menu. " Even better this way "said Doreen, and it was...really good. The best that I've had. And just as with a whole fish, I always order Octopus when it is offered. It was marvelous. I held out on dessert but enjoyed a few delicious cups of coffee. By 8 pm, just as we were ready to head out, the winds picked up and it was time to say goodnight . I first came here by chance, looking for seafood restaurants in the area. I wasn't expecting too much, but wow, I was pleasantly surprised. This is hands down one of my favorite restaurants! When I plugged in the driving directions, it seemed as if they were leading us to someone's house, but luckily we found this place. It is tucked away from the public highways and overlooks the water. While the inside is nicely decorated, if weather allows, definitely try sitting outside. During a summer night, it is the best kind of view. I've had a variety of dishes here and each one has been fantastic. I can fully recommend the whole grilled dourade, the grilled octopus (probably my personal favorite!), the house made falafel, and the vegetable tabbouleh. The staff is friendly and welcoming and the service is great. There were even some decent options for wine (I enjoyed the Cava), which I wasn't expecting at all. This is definitely a place to go on special occasions. It has everything: great service, great atmosphere, and great food. I can't wait until I have another occasion to come back here for. read more

Who would ever have imagined being able to dine al fresco on the water in early November? The stellar weather and the looming cold front had Lisa E. making a quick change to our LIRW reservation to Friday night from Saturday (her assessment skills are the best!). Patio dining next to the fire pit, twinkling lights on the tropical palms, boats swaying on the docks and the full moon sparkling on the water....made the three of us think back to great times in Largo, Florida. We began our meal with a shared plate of smoky tender grilled octopus with a white bean puree, fennel, frisee and gigante beans and little nubbins of crispy fatty chorizo. When I say shared, our daughter stole the large white beans, we cleaned up everything else. I then ordered from the restaurant week menu. First course was the roasted baby rainbow carrots with dates, sliced lengthwise, carmelized crisp tender and glazed with harisa and honey. With the perfect balance between spicy and sweet these were a knockout that I would love to replicate at home. My main was pan-seared scallops, nutty brown and cooked perfectly. The flavors of fennel, citrus and coriander butter were rich yet did not detract from the fresh clean taste of the scallops. The parsnip puree was a little to bland for my liking, nothing wrong, just a personal preference. The little taste of the grilled whole fish and falafel the girls gave me showed off the chef's talents. For dessert, the baklava was perfectly executed, light crispy layers of phyllo pastry, with a not too sweet honeyed syrup and fresh walnut halves. Truly fresh and house made ( not the soggy overly sweet mess that sits forlorn for hours elsewhere). As the cold front approached, the temperature dropped and the winds picked up, we finished with a piping hot cup of fresh aromatic coffee. The only disappointment for me ( okay I'm a neophyte beer snob) was the beer menu. I can live without draft, but I was really looking for something to pair with my scallops, like a wheat bear or a saison or even a session IPA. Settled for a can of Montauk Driftwood Ale because that was the only thing I saw close to a local craft on the menu. Came to Cardoon for a work event. The outdoor patio was charming and the service was attentive. Overall, we enjoyed all the food. But the highlights for me were the appetizers--especially the eggplant meatballs and the calamari, cooked with chickpeas and pepperoncini and served with spicy marinara. My standout favorite was definitely the sweet and sour Moroccan wings, which has the perfect amount of sweet stickiness and extra crispy skin--simply delightful. I chose the marinated steak skewers over cous cous for my entree, but the meat was a bit dry and over cooked for my liking. My coworker had the wild salmon, which looked very juicy. I had a really great experience at Cardoon Mediterranean last Saturday night! In true Paula Jean fashion, I opted to sit at the bar and have a cocktail before I moved to a table. Someone had ordered a gin and tonic which made my taste buds long for a Bombay Sapphire Martini, shaken, not stirred. The bartendress prepared it perfectly! Whilst sipping my libation, I moseyed around the courtyard admiring the boats that were gently rocking in the canal. It was very soothing but rain was imminent, so I made my way back inside. We started with an appetizer of 3 dips served with grilled pita - spicy feta, eggplant and smoked trout taramasalata. ( my favorite was the spicy feta ) I had the pan roasted arctic char over a bed of salad with chick pea puree and tahini yogurt drizzle. My husband had the chicken souvlaki hand held with vegetables, spicy feta and tzatziki with french fries. Everything was delicious! My fish was moist, and well seasoned as was the salad with shaved fennel and arugula. We had reservations at 1800 and there were only a few tables occupied. The food was ok but we had to stand up and wave our waitress down if we wanted any type of service! First let me say. As a business owner, I go out of my way to find the good in my experiences with other businesses, so this was a painful review to write. Second, I truly did try to find the good here. Minimal. At best. We arrived and sat at the bar while we waited for the rest of our party. There was dirty plates next to us for the entire 20 min we sat there. They were out of ginger beer for one of their signature drinks. And short on other options as well. Silver lining - Bartender was friendly so there was that. Then our party arrived. Our server asked if we were ready to order. And proceeded to say. If you need a few more minutes, I suggest you put the apps and entrees in at the same time, because we will get very busy soon. (Seemed to us she was looking to turn her table fast). Hi Ok, so we order everything at once even though we were planning to order apps first. We feel very rushed. Apps were eggplant balls, ribs and watermelon salad. Salad was good, balls were solid. Ribs looked like 2 different apps. One was a super generous portion and the other was super skimpy. To the point where we had to complain. Dinner. I got salad with grilled shrimp. It was very good. My husband got pasta with beans and grilled salmon. Salmon was so overcooked it was disgusting and pasta was so soft and mushy. Beans were scarce. My friend got steak medium. It was cooked to a grayish hue. Clearly well well done. His wife got a merguez lamb burger promising to be packed full of flavor. It was bland town. Blah. Waitress rude and curt throughout meal. We went for my birthday because of the reviews. We were seated right away and our waitress took our drink order and received our drinks pretty quickly. It was downhill after that. I have to say we went the night before hurricane Henri and it started to rain very hard and they had to scramble to move people who sat at tables with umbrellas. We were under a big tent so it didn't affect us. We ordered steamers which were just ok. Nothing special. We ordered fisherman's platter which was skimpy portion and way overcooked , shrimp oreganata wasn't anything special either. Just kind of blah food. I make better seafood at home. Oh and table set for 5 but silverware for 4. Next was dessert. We ordered raspberry sorbet covered with chocolate which was good and rainbow cake slices and every slice was a different size. We also ordered tea which they had a few nice choices , decaf coffee with half and half that when the half and half was put in was a oily film on top of coffee and 3 cappuccinos which were all different looking. At the beginning the waitress service was great but then there was no one to be found. We wanted more drinks with dinner and never ordered them because they never came back until we ordered dessert. I don't know what the hype is about this restaurant. The view was nothing more than a canal with boats docked and houses and your sitting on dirty looking resin chairs. I have been wanting to try this place since last year and finally tried it on Friday night at around 5pm. When we pulled up, there was no spots in the lot and to the right of the place is a marina with all boats. I asked the hostess if we could park on the street since there were no signs indicating otherwise and she said yes.. we did not have a reservatiok but was immediately seated outdoors. Our waiter came over and took our drink and appetizer order. The wings had the right amount of sauce on them - they were only a sweet and spicy wings, not your typical mild, medium, hot. I can't deal with spicy food and I could eat these, no problem. We ordered the cold lobster roll which was filled with chunks of lobster on a soft bun and a burger which had a smokey taste to it - different and delicious. The fries that came with both meals were crispy. For dessert, we had the chocolate mousse cake which I'd definitely order again. The waiter was attentive and service was great. If you choose to take your boat there, they have 3 boat slips and we were informed that they serve you on the boat. I can't wait to come back and try everything else on the menu! read more

Went to Cardoon for an early Wednesday night dinner. We were the only patrons with a hostess and a couple of waitresees. We sat outside and waited nearly 10 minutes for water and menus while the staff chatted inside. We had questions on what salad dressings were available and the waitress told us to read the menu, if a salad on the menu had that dressing, then they had the dressing. "Do you have Blue Cheese?" "I don't remember - read the menu. It starts to drizzle so we move inside, then all the staff moved outside to continue their chat interrupted. We are sitting one foot from the bar and find out they have bar specials. Can we order those specials? I honestly have nothing bad to say about this place. The outside seating is complimented by a quiet bay view and it actually has a decent amount of seating inside and out. It's a small hole in the wall type place that you would not see unless you were looking for it. So I highly suggest you look for this place. We started out with octopus. I don't have any experience eating octopus but this stuff was amazing. First time ever having it and I easily could have had that as a meal. Onto the main entree. I got the steak that was cooked, marinated, and tasted perfectly. On a bed of asparagus also. The steak was so juicy and not filled with fat too. My friend got the Brozino filet on a bed of lentils, peppers and perhaps cherry tomatoes. The filet was HUGE easily good enough for two people and from the tiny bit I had tasted juicy and not dry like most fish. All in all, this place seems like a great summer destination spot for couples, older folks, celebration dinners as they do private events also. My bestie and I came here last night for her birthday. Oh my gosh, besides the great atmosphere and sitting out and dining by the water, the food is AMAZING. We shared the 3 dip trio of hummus, eggplant and spicy feta. The eggplant hummus was out of this world! For our entrees we both got the salmon over sautéed greens, beets and quinoa. This was probably the best salmon dish I've ever had. For dessert (um because yes) we got the baked tahini chocolate cookie. Oh. Em. Gee. Hope this place closes soon. Not sure what all the hype is about--the food is meh. The shrimp scampi tasted like it came from some chain restaurant like Olive Garden. So you can eat outside, big deal. Better choices out there. read more
