I'm always in a cheerful mood leaving Ample Hills since they serve up happiness in ice cream form! This location is very walkable from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Museum. The employees are good-natured and let you sample many of the flavors. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and even an area for games. If you have trouble deciding, I highly suggest going with a flight. They are $10 and you get to pick out six flavors to try. You can't go wrong with selections like Peppermint Pattie, Chocolate Fudge, Oatmeal Lace, and Cookie Au Lait. It's a spot I would say is good for those who like the Ben and Jerry's type ice cream-- very sweet, unique and seasonal flavors, and big chunks of various cookie/cake/etc bits. I like going around fall since they have lovely pumpkin and other fall flavors. For me personally, this type of ice cream can be a bit too sweet so I have to really be craving it and even then I tend to go for the smallest size. Stopped here after a nice walk at prospect park. It was a drizzly day around 4pm and the place was empty except for 2 customers and 2 workers. I was unsure of what to get but landed on a orange milkshake and a coffee cookies and cream milkshake. The coffee milkshake was really good and tasted like having a coffee flavored slushie. The orange milkshake was delicious with a fun fruity taste in milkshake form that ive never had before but will definitely have again. The place itslef was quiet calm and clean. This has by far been my favorite ice cream shop experience. The minute my son and I walked into the venue. It was so inviting and smelled amazing. The staff was very friendly and took the time to explain everything to me. I saw the death by chocolate advertisement on Instagram and had to come right away. It was definitely worth my visit. I was surprised to see if they had a play area for the children and they even had a game room that had lots of family games. We played jumbo Jenga, tic-tac-toe, pinball and many other games. Such a fun space that caters to all ages! I came here to try the new pumpkin showdown ice cream flavors and really enjoyed how beautiful the interior was. There were plenty of seatings available and also a great selection of different types of ice cream as well. Their ice cream flavors are all unique! Came by on one of the hotter summer days in desperate need for something cold. There aren't as many flavors in person as they had on their website. I really wanted a mint chip-esque flavor, but I settled getting the strawberries and cream and the cookie au lait. I thought the flavors of each of the ice cream could be bolder. The cookie in the coffee ice cream was very much on the sweeter side for me, so I wanted a bolder, more bitter coffee taste. The strawberries and cream wasn't that sweet which I preferred, but it wasn't strawberry forward either. It's not the creamiest ice cream I've had. I loved that they let you get two different flavors with any size. I ended up getting a kids size which was more than enough for me. From their humble Brooklyn storefront to their Disney partnership to their Red Hook playground and ultimately their bankruptcy and sale for just $1 million to a steel manufacturing company, I followed their journey like the superfan that I was. I, like Oprah, and Disney chief executive officer Bob Iger, instantly fell in love with the ice cream as soon as I got a taste. I love ice cream with texture, and Ample Hills never held back. You could find potato chips, candy bars, Greek pastries in their scoops and it always worked. That paired with their fun flavor names and high quality cream always ensured a sensory overload of an experience in the best way. When the pair sold Ample Hills, they vowed to return with a new venture, and when they announced The Social, a generic sounding name, I was really curious about what they had up their sleeve. Entering The Social feels so much like Ample Hills 2.0, with a very similar playful feel, fun flavor names, and lots of textures and ingredients in their ice cream to match. There is nary a mention of their history, except for an opaque nod to the source of the name of their former business, from Walt Whitman's poem "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" framed on a wall in the shop. I have been looking forward to trying The Social since the day I found out that they were going to open! I am a HUGE Ample Hills fan (a hillionarie to be exact) and had high expectations for The Social. My expectations were definitely met! Here is what we had: 2 homemade donuts - one cookies and cream, one cinnamon sugar A double scoop with Breakfast with Nonna D and Poppy, and Ooeyer and Gooeyer. The donuts were soft and fresh, and served warm if you like. The warm donut is the way to go. I was hoping to try the chocolate donuts, but they did not have any when I was there. The donuts were very tasty! I loved the ice cream! It is filled with mix ins and is creamy. There are so many flavors to choose from which makes it very difficult to choose. They allow samples and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast with Nonna D and Poppy is maple syrup and donut infused ice cream with pieces of Nonna D's oatmeal cookies. Ooeyer and Gooeyer is ooey gooey butter cake infused ice cream filled with chunks of the ooey goey butter cake and caramel ribbons. Both were SO GOOD! I wish they would offer the ice cream flights because I would have eaten one of those to try more than the 2 flavors. The atmosphere of The Social is so cute with the 70's retro theme. It is obvious how much effort and thought Brian and Jackie put into their new ice cream shop. Basically, if you haven't tried The Social, you need to. The social is a resurrection of ample hills (RIP). The same owners have managed to bring back their signature Gooey Butter Cake ice cream and rebrand it as Ooeyer and Gooeyer. I'm a girl who loves novelty flavors, and The Social delivers scrumptiously. A few of my favorites are morning in Paris (croissant flavored ice cream with raspberry jam swirl), banana pudding (a banana ice cream with banana laffy taffy potency studded with nilla wafers), oh captain my captain (Cap'n crunch and fruity pebbles ice cream). If you're not into that, no worries, they do fancy remixes on the classics. Their cookies and cream ice cream uses hydrox cookies (the OG Oreo), and their peanut butter has a malty, salty pretzel flavor and chunks of peanut butter cups. Their coffee ice cream is a little cinnamon-y with crunchy toffee pieces. If you're into the plain weird flavors, you'll lose your shit when I tell you that they made a bacon egg n cheese ice cream. The Social was AMAZING. I came here for an event and was pretty skeptical of the dessert- a flufferwich. I love my sugar, but the thought of two whoopie pies and a scoop of icecream in the middle sounded like an overload. Spoiler alert- it was, but in all the best ways. I ordered the Banana Pudding Whoopie Pie, which was essentially two huge vanilla wafer cookies. These cookies were dense and had the texture of soft pound cakes with a crispy edge. I'm not sure if I tasted the banana pudding fluff (maybe it was removed?) but the cookie itself was fantastic. I also got a scoop of their banana pudding icecream in the middle, which was creamy and full of banana flavor. It had chunks of nilla wafer wedged inside, and it was a great balance to the cookies.
