I've been coming to Amiga's for nearly 20 years. I respected and enjoyed the last owner but really like how George has livened up the place with cacti/succulents on each table, wonderfully bright colors, local art and consistently good food. Sitting here reading the reviews I wonder if some people just enjoy a good troll as I have never seen the microwave used to prepare the food. I'm also craving my regular rice, chicken and cheese burrito, served with hot sauce so it has that lovely spicy "bite" to it. Probably I'll have to go soon--burrito addiction is brutal! We wanted to try this place out, hoping it would be quick, good Mexican. It was quick, but it was NOT good. My boyfriend ordered a quesadilla, which was a tortilla folded in half around some bagged "Mexican mix" cheese and microwaved right before our eyes. My beans and rice were totally unseasoned, and my burrito wasn't any better--the tortilla was warmed in the microwave so it was hard by the time I was halfway through eating it, and it, too, was flavorless. We had two burritos that were good-sized and tasted amazing! They have great vegetarian options (beans and rice don't have any animal products, but make sure to tell them if you are vegan/vegetarian) and were very accommodating. The owner, Jorge, is so kind and you can tell he really loves his business. If you are expecting super traditional Mexican food with lard, chicken stock in the rice, etc., this might not be the place for you. The burritos tasted a little bit healthier, which I loved. I'll start by saying that Amiga's has been consistently really good since I started eating lunch while working downtown at Humboldt Bank back in the 90s. Their ingredients have always been so fresh - that is the single best thing about the place in my opinion. Oh, and the great service and micro brews on tap. The beans are unique - I definitely wouldn't say Mexican authentic - they are much healthier than that and have kind of a unique flavor to them. Love them. Anyway, I don't like going on Yelp because the reviews the longtime "yelpers" give are so lame. But I just saw the lamest review ever on this restaurant where a lady was complaining about the lettuce and showed a photo of lettuce to make her point. It looked exactly like lettuce. And that lady gets to post one star? Come on. After I saw that I felt compelled to negate her one star with the five star this small business deserves. Probably the worst place to eat in Humboldt County. I went in super excited to eat at this place. All the food was flavorless, they did not know how to make a burrito for their lives, and none of the flavors were good. They put sriracha on my burrito as "spicy salsa". Definitely not Mexican food at all. If I could give this place half a star I would. Each burrito was super super expensive, and for that crap??? Ugh I almost asked for a refund, had to throw away my burrito I couldn't even eat it it was so bad. read more

Greay experience!! So luch so i downloaded to app to say this. Im from southern california so i know good mexican food. These guys made amazing food, and upon walking in was greated by the jappiest guy at the counter who took his time making sure all my vegetarian needs were met and that i was ok with how they prepare the rice and refried beans. This place is no good. I apologize to the sweet ladies that work there for saying it but it is the god damn truth. First off, there ain't nothing Mexican about this place, but i am not sure if they are trying to say it is. I got a burrito here today and the whole thing was made in the freaken microwave. Cheese; packaged generic, beans, I am sure are canned, and the potaoes tasted like it also came from a can. I burned my lip because the burrito was so hot from being in the microwave. The salsa also tasted like it was from a jar. My friend's burrito looked just as putrid. Yes, I know Mexican food but I am truly not that picky. I am really starting to miss the Bay Area more and more when I try places that are sub par like this place. Maybe if you are used to Taco Bell or 7-11 burritos, this place is for you, but not for me. I say go to Amigas for the brownies and the fountain drinks and go somewhere else for tacos or burritos. Where? All you complainers - grow up! It's not meant to be authentic Mexican food. Anyone who says everything comes from a can is an idiot. I worked for Debbie for years and had to MAKE all the salsas, SHRED all the cheese/lettuce, CUT UP the beef and chicken to cook, COOK dry pinto beans into re-fried, etc. She makes all the spice blends that she uses. I live out of the area, Seattle, and since my father passed away a couple of years ago and mother now lives in Washington, I probably will never have another wonderful chicken, rice, cheese, sour cream, hot salsa burrito...which is very sad. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and was a great boss! Debbie - I may have to have you roll me up some burritos and send them up packed in dry ice...it would be worth every penny. Having just come back into the area after 15 or so years, we were looking for a good little Mexican food place one day and stumbled upon this place, and it was AMAZING! The food was incredible and the prices very reasonable, and the portion sizes were very generous, so glad we found this place. Don't judge a book by its cover, this place doesn't look like much from the outside, but as soon as you walk in the scents surround you. This is a must try if you are a fan of Mexican food. I don't understand the negative comments, maybe people just aren't ordering the right things here. Everything is fresh, tasty, simple and wholesome. I would certainly recommend getting the SPICY salsa - it's delicious. I'm a vegetarian, so I usually get a combo with a veggie taco. I love the beans and rice here, well-seasoned and not mushy. The guacamole, salsa and chips is a good place to start, too. The horchata is pretty good - to the reviewer who said the rice milk is inauthentic, that isn't true - it's most commonly made with rice milk. I am Latina and I approve of this place, not that it particularly matters, but all the 'white people' and ethnicity related comments are here as if they are important, so hey. A good deal, fast service, good coffee available, plenty of space. I guess you either love it or hate it. I love it. read more

I've driven by this place every morning for weeks, and couldn't wait til I had a few extra bucks to get breakfast. I should have read the Yelp reviews ;) Haha. First they only have 3 breakfast items - all burritos, no relleno - but okay...I decided to go with the potato, egg, & cheese. She grabbed something out of the fridge and put it in the microwave. At first I was confused as to what needed to be microwaved, but then I realized it was the burrito I had ordered. Pre-made, then microwaved breakfast burritos. I politely canceled my order and left. Service was quick, genuine, and polite. The name of the place lead me to believe they served Mexican Food, but it's really Gringo-Tex-Mex food. Which some people like/love; however, I really dislike it! On my first trip there, I ordered a breakfast burrito with everything. Granted this is not a traditionally Mexican dish, so all I was looking for was something yummy and full of flavor. What I got was disappointing, even for a breakfast burrito. About a year after our last visit, and once again up in the Big City (we live where there aren't stoplights) for medical tests for our son. Always a bit stressful, but we were heartened by the thought of stopping by Amigas afterwards for burritos and respite. The rice is now spicer than last year, but all is still delicious, filling, and inexpensive. The small bean, cheese and rice burrito is more than enough for either me or my kid (well, he's 23, but has Down Syndrome). Dad loved the Breakfast Burrito. Having felt the mild salsa was a bit too bland for me last trip, I had the medium, and it was perfect...hot, but not painful. The place is warm and comforting and the coffee is hot and delicious (some of the best coffee I've had on the northcoast, and believe me, I sample coffee everywhere). Kid and dad decided to have brownies, which were gooey and huge and looked like death by chocolate. I just kept happily sipping my coffee. Staff is friendly and charming, and the angel fish is looking a lot happier than last year. This is a good place to take children, and I noticed a few youngsters happily chowing down. read more

I like Amigas. The burritos are pretty good. The service is really good. The salsa is more a minced pico de galo then a salsa. And due to the steam tray system it never tastes quite as fresh as other places in town but the food is pretty tasty and relatively cheap. Try their desserts. read more

I love this place! It's not traditional Mexican food in that they don't use Manteca (lard). If you've ever made tamales, you know how much lard is used in making this traditional dish. Same goes for refried beans. Using brown rice rather than white rice is also not traditional but I prefer the nutty taste of the whole grain. I have friends who are vegetarian or vegan and they too can enjoy a delicious, healthy meal at Amigas. My husband and I are omnivores and love their shredded chicken and beef tacos. We lived in San Bernardino County for a number of years so we've had lots of traditional Mexican cooking but we prefer the Amigas way of cooking. Another note: during my college years I was a waitress at several restaurants, including a Mexican-American one in a Southern California resort area. I was taught to judge the cleanliness of the kitchen by how clean the restrooms were. Amigas has very clean facilities if that's important to you. The new owner has added fresh color and light to the interior and the place radiates friendliness. Highly recommended (unless you like lard). read more
