This is my favorite place to eat in Middlebury. It's kid friendly, has great food, and even has outdoor seating with a fire pit! They do get busy after 6, but show up just after 5 and you can almost have the place to yourself. read more

I went to American Flatbread for a birthday party. Since we were a big group of about 18, they didn't allow us to reserve a table in advance. We got there just a little before five and managed to grab two big tables. By 6 o'clock, the place was packed! We ordered three types of pizzas, margherita, sweet sausage with mushroom, cheese, and mushroom. Nothing special about the cheese pizza and the mushroom pizza; the sweet sausage with mushroom was pleasantly flavorful -- the sweetness of the sausage really came through; and the margherita had wonderfully oven roasted red and yellow tomato slices on them. The pizza crust was quite thin, not as thin as what you'd get in Italy, but somewhere in between a typical American-style pizza and an Italian thin crust. It had quite a crispy texture, which I quite enjoyed. Prices are quite hefty. After quickly glancing through the menu, pizzas came out to about 35 dollars a pie. Kinda reminded me of Japan. Their IPA draught was decent. Finally, I really loved the brick oven that they have in the middle of the restaurant. Made the place feel very warm and cozy. I can imagine how comfortable this place must feel in the dead winter, especially here in Vermont! Loved watching the the pizza guy throwing in extra wood into the fire. Overall, quite nice, but nothing too special. read more

This place is sort of hard to find if you're from out of town, like we were, but it's SOOOO worth looking around for. We ate here on a Tuesday night, which might have explained the REMARKABLY fast service, but nonetheless this place was awesome. The spicy bean dip was a funny texture, but it was delicious, and it's served with pickled vegetables & sesame flatbread (flatbreadflatbreadflatbread!). We also got the Punctuated Equilibrium pizza, which was covered in fun toppings, notably goat cheese, which goes PERFECTLY with the flatbread. We stuffed ourselves with pizza, so we were unable to fathom the mere idea of dessert, but I'm sure it would've been great. Oh, and the DECORATIONS! Very cool, very Vermont. It's also nice to see the pizza being made, especially when it's YOUR pizza coming out of the oven. read more

If you are up there in VT and looking for some nice, thin, crispy pizza - this is the place. keep in mind they have weird hours - only open on weekends 5-9:30, i suggest getting there early as they were very busy all the times we have been there. the restaurant is actually a commercial bakeshop where they produce their frozen pizzas - which are also very good if you can find them (check your local WholeFoods) - its the best frozen pizza i have ever had!! they had a bunch of local new england beers on tap, and when we were here they had some nice locally produced cinnamon ice cream from a nearby dairy farm topped with a bittersweet chocolate sauce from a kettle over the fire .. damn that was good. overall - an interesting experience and something more than the run of the mill pizzas you get everywhere else. read more

Excellent locally- and seasonally-driven restaurant that specializes in flatbreads (hot and crisp from a giant earthen oven) and healthy, tasty salads. The ingredients were all of the highest quality, and specials were intriguing. We especially enjoyed a special flatbread (the "Veal Bolognese") which featured slices of roasted turnip and locally-sourced veal that was grounded and scattered on top of the flatbread with Vermont Ayr cheese, both from the Crawford Family Farm. They also have several local brews on tap - we had a Switchback Ale which paired well with our salad due to its yeasty and complex flavor. If we're ever back in Middlebury, we'll know where to grab a casual but intensely satisfying bite. read more

New Haven pizza it ain't but sit next to the wood burning pizza oven to warm up after crossing Marble Works bridge with your favorite Middlebury College student and you could do a lot worse. The pizza...excuse me flatbread...is good to great. Veg friendly. The organic, locally sourced pizza and ingredients seem to fit right in here with no chain vibe which is perfect. The bill for two parents, a high school junior and Middlebury freshman was around $80 including a few beers, from a nice selection. Good not great service. Very relaxed and casual. A very pleasant place to see your kid/student off after dinner to hit the party scene. This place is about a half mile away from the central campus. Hopefully we will see our high school junior in the morning in one piece. read more

This restaurant is quintessential Vermont. I've been here a few times with friends and they always have the best, most unique pizzas. When I went, they had an apple, bacon, and VT cheddar pizza. Ugh, SO AMAZING. Their meat dishes tend to be better than their vegetarian ones. Just prepare your stomach, because it can be surprising how filling they are. If the hostess asks you to wait outside, don't. We had a group of 10 and we're told it would be a 45 minute wait. They asked us to wait outside and would come to alert us when our table was ready. They NEVER came outside. After 45 minutes (I rarely take them on their word) I checked on the table status and they claimed they gave our table away because nobody was outside when they came out and called our party. 10 people are hard to miss, especially when seated on the marble next to it. I suppose it probably had something to do with teenagers/early 20-somethings running the front of the house and not being able to keep up/organized with the mass volume of patrons. The manager was of no assistance and rather unapologetic. Please don't place blame on your customers as this reflects poorly on your operation. After standing firm in demanding our table we were seated. The service was rather extremely slow versus our previous two experiences. The server seemed perturbed she had to wait on a large table (and we typically tip well above the standard large group norm of 18%). Furthermore, she appeared to take more interest in her 20 something counterpart male coworker versus tending to beverages for the party. I had to embarrassingly get up and call her over to us. This was a theme through the night as she was sidetracked by various friends that would visit and not even eat, but bother the staff and then return outside to the back door waiting area of the Marbleworks area to play charades in our direct view/window (which was actually refreshing and entertaining as we waited another 45 minutes for our food to arrive). The trusses above our table had large spiderwebs hanging down from the ceiling's track lighting right in the view of the casual observer. AS FOR THE FOOD: I cannot complain! We started with the local meat and cheese plate. The cured pepperoni was just like that of which you'd find in old world Europe or any Slavic neighborhood in Cleveland or Chicago. The fresh made mustard definitely was the highlight of this appetizer and the cheeses were run of the mill for the Atlantic NE. They have a nice beverage menu, offering several local IPAs and organic brews. I enjoyed the Citizen Cider "Dirty Mayor" which was a nice change of pace and paired well with the app and pizzas. The pizza was phenomenal. We had the Revolution and the Punctuated Equilibrium. Both were delicious and savory to the last bite. Overall, I would suggest trying out American Flatbread, but I can't say we will ever visit the Middlebury location ever again. I give 3 stars ONLY because of the food and previous two visits that were pleasant. This experience, however, left a disenchanting feeling even as we left the restaurant and were ignored by the manager up front who couldn't even muster a "come again" or "thank you" after we thanked them for resolving the nightmarish start. read more

Had a vegetarian Pizza special and it was so delicious and flavorful. All there pizzas are cooked in a legit wood fired oven. I can imagine it must be tricky to cook a consistent, not burnt pizza in a raging wood fired but my pizza was perfect! They have a great craft, draft beer list. Lots of VT beers are fearured. Great atmosphere. I can imagine this place gets pretty busy when Middlebury College is in full swing but they have lots of tables to accommodate. I had trouble finding the place. It is in a lot with other businesses that are also poorly labeled. There is only one tiny sign and it doesnt necesarrily look like a restauarant from the exterior. I was searching for it and clearly there were a lot of other people just getting gout of work annoyed by me trying to read signs in the parking lot. I almost gave up and went somewhere else but swung through the lot one more time and thankfully found the entrance! Will be back. read more

I love American Flatbread. They always have two special flatbreads that are very interesting and quite tasty, using local, fresh ingredients. In addition, their standbys, particularly the Punctuated Equilibrium and the Pepperoni and Peppers, are always great. The apple pie is a great way to end the meal. I come here probably once a month on a college budget, so I value this place very highly. They only have flatbreads, so don't come here expecting to order something else. The setting is in beautiful Marbleworks, and they recently expanded their bar, which is awesome and provides a huge selection of local beers at prices that are more reasonable than at other bars in town. Good food, poor service. I grew up in the town next to Middlebury and admit to trying American Flatbread from the freezer before finally making it down to the restaurant itself. The pizza was impressive and super tasty, but the service leaves me hesitant to return. Our server took our order and disappeared until she came back with the food 45 minutes later. By then, all of us needed drink refills and it took an additional 20 minutes before we got them. To top it off, we had to wait another 15 minutes for the check. The food is worth at least one visit, but they don't get more than three stars from me as I don't know if I'll return. read more

Firstly, Weird hours to be open so make sure it's open when you go. Secondly, AMAZING pizzas - a little pricey for college students but definitely worth it. Great atmosphere with a lot of families (kids play outside in the summer), with an open kitchen (try to sit away from the stoves because they're HOT), but mostly just delicious pizzas made from local produce. We showed up late on a Sunday evening. We navigated around the restoration construction happening at the barn and found parking in the wet muddy lot. If I hadn't been following a friend who had been here many times I never would have found it, but I'm so glad I did. We'd been camping and got stuck in pouring rain, we changed into our only dry clothes and rolled up here in fairly crazy-looking sweatsuit / pyjama ensembles and nobody batted an eye. There are often long waits here in the summer, and you can sit in the fields outside by roaring bonfires and have a delicious local beer while you wait for your table, but on this day we had no wait at all. We were ushered in by the kindest of hosts to a warm spot by the huge wild indoor hearth where whole pizzas are being paddled into hot delicious perfect crispy existence by adorable hippie foodie kids. Our waitress was funny and kind and brought a perfect glass of red wine that started to thaw my mind and make everything alright. We shared the house salad (so delicious! bright fresh local organic greens! so tart and good!) and the daily salad special (also lovely with darlingly little roasted potatoes and fennel and smoked salmon.) We also shared a pizza, half the daily special with roast ramps and ricotta, half with local sausage, both perfect. We polished it off and went home happy campers. read more

Everyone at Middlebury talks this place up, and I had been looking forward to eating here for several weeks. Although I thought it was a little strange they are open 2 nights a week (before I found out the place is also a fully operational factory), I was not disappointed. We ordered 4 different flatbreads and each one was delicious (although I didn't care much for the venison one we ordered, but then again I don't eat a lot of red meat). Living in Chicago makes me appreciate AF in a way New Yorkers or New Havenites can't. It's not merely relative, though. I really couldn't decide whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars...I went with 3 because I have two major gripes about the place. First is, the space they are in is HUGE but they only use about half for seating. Super annoying on busy night. Secondly, its expensive. We got two pizzas (which are pretty large, but not super filling) to go and it was $37 dollars. Each pizza will feed about 2 adults, maybe three if they have salad too. Okay onto the good stuff. The pizza is super delicious, like could eat the whole thing by myself delicious. The woodfired crust is crispy and flavorful. They give a good amount of toppings (I actually had TOO much pepperoni on mine). There is a full bar for those who enjoy a libation or two. On a nice night I suggest picking it up to go and picnicing by the falls...much nicer than sitting inside (the restaurant is kind of dark). read more

This place was phenomenal. The artwork and decor were clearly chosen with love and a diverse group in mind. There is plenty of seating, lots of pizza and salad options, and best of all: original Burlington, VT draught root beer! We have a friend attending Breadloaf and when we mentioned we would be visiting, he said that we had to come here for dinner. We had the special pizza of the night which included black beans and broccoli among other toppings, as well as the ever-famous Punctuated Equilibrium. For dessert we had the night special, which was a lemon/lime custard with raspberries. The food was amazing. Our waitress was wonderful. LOVED this place!!!! Tucked away in town but so worth going. Cozy atmosphere, great friendly staff, and the food is AWESOME! The best part is that they use organic and locally farmed ingredients, the way everyone should be eating. Nice variety and something for everyone. We got there early because we heard the wait can be long, but that is because the wood fired oven can only accommodate so many orders at a time. They also have lots of take out orders going on too, and they have to balance that with the eat-in customers, but they do move as quickly as they can.
