I have so many good memories here, including my 21st birthday dinner when I got really drunk and ran a huge drinks tab. The beer, the wine, the ingredients are all local and the flatbread....OH THE FLATBREAD. Make sure to try their specials. They are usually the best options. It is definitely worth the long wait. And you WILL wait since everyone who wants to stuff their face with the delicious flatbread can only do so on the weekends and they don't take reservations. No worries though; you can drink and wait (and in the summer you can venture out to the "garden" with your ottercreek blackberry wheat in hand). American Flatbread is a must every time we visit my in laws. Go early for the best experience and to not have to wait for a table. The evolution salad is insanely fresh and has a tamari-ginger-sesame dressing. the communal size is plenty for six people. The flatbreads are inventive, FRESH, local and cut into mini slices so you can sample/eat many varieties. The specials are off the chains delicious and innovative, every time/ The service has always been friendly and the roaring wood fired pizza oven in the middle of the restaurant makes this an intensely cozy experience. Although I don't love mushrooms, the new Vermont sausage forces me to abandon all my preconceived notions of the fungus, I will devour that savory deliciousness all day. I live in Middlebury and have gone many times to American Flatbread, and my experiences have usually been OK or bad. The pizza is great, no matter what you get, but the servers always seem put out, and they don't take reservations. I had a party for my son there, without a reservation because they won't give you one. Since some of the parents stayed and some decided to leave, I had told them we needed a table for 10, but ended up with 7. In the middle of our meal they came by to explain that they were taking away one of our tables (which were all pushed together) because I had misled them about the number of people in our party. The host was this incredibly annoying 20 something straight from a Bret Easton Ellis novel. American Flatbread in Burlington has different owners and is far superior in service and general vibe, I recommend you try that one. read more

I mad an appointment for 12 people at 7 pm. We showed up at 6:55 and were not seated until 7:40. I was very disappointed that I had to keep my parents and their friends from out of town entertained and happy on their empty stomachs while we waited. The front-desk/host was not helpful and continuously told us that our table was being cleared. I could see our table and it was sitting dirty and uncleared for 10 minutes without anyone attending to it. Finally someone started to clear it, and it was the slowest table clearing I've ever seen. When we were finally seated, we waited 15 minutes for someone to come take our drink orders, at which time I insisted they also take our food order. While we waited, we ran ou tof water and I had to go ask the waitress to refill our glasses.Our food came before our drinks, which was very disappointing, and when the drinks finally came, 2 were incorrect. Perhaps the worst part of all of this is that this took place during the massive heat wave of August 2016 (~100 degrees) and we were seated right next to the wood-fired pizza oven. It was sweltering and I was dripping wet. There was no evidence of an air conditioner. My friend had to personally open the restaurant door to the back patio area to get some air flow. Overall, very disappointed. If it is a Friday night, bring in more wait staff! Two stars because the flatbreads were fantastic. read more

On a cold winter evening, get a table near the fire (or you might be a bit chilly). This restaurant sources organic whenever possible and they always have a special menu of strictly local food for the localvores. Their specials capitalize on what is in season locally and are always delicious. On the standard menu, the flatbread called "Punctuated Equilibrium" (PE) is my favorite. I can't imagine that there is a better pizza out there. They use only the freshest ingredients and combine them in such creative ways, it is pizza-making raised to an art form. And of course, what artist would be complete without his tools? In this case, it's the massive stone hearth they bake their pizzas in. I went to American Flatbread with my Mom when I visited the college. It was late-summer and we assumed everything would be closed or very quiet. Not the case! The restaurant was full of smiling families. We got seated at a very quaint table outside in the garden. The tablecloths were cute checkers and the decor was little glass jars. We ordered a pizza and a salad from the menu. We are pretty well versed in the area of artisanal pizza, and these lived up to the expectations! I even liked the crust better than my favorite place at home. Definitely would recommend this to any visiting student or faculty or tourist! read more

I would like to be able to chime in on the positive reviews, but today's visit left me unimpressed, and I believe they should perform at a higher level to justify their prices. We started with a sweet potato spread (described as sweet potato, cream cheese, cilantro) that was tangy (sun dried tomatoes?) but did not deliver much else. A small assortment of fresh vegetables accompanied it, along with some remarkably stale, tough fragments of flatbread. I'm guessing these may have been intended to be crisp at one time, or possibly just regular flatbread, but it was neither...just stale. We tried to describe the shortcomings to the waitress, but she didn't seem to have time to listen, although oddly she claimed she would pass our comments to the kitchen. (Tip: Listening to the comments first would have elevated your sincerity quotient.) The experience gave us cause to question their pledge to quality and integrity. I see from other reviews that we are not the first to critique the service. The flatbread pizza we received was a marginal improvement over the appetizer and may have been fairly priced based on the expense of the artisanal ingredients, but the price still greatly exceeded our satisfaction. The fennel sausage was nice, maybe too subtle, and the flatbread was well prepared and thankfully not stale. But altogether, there was no synergy or impact...it was just average. A bit of table salt and red pepper raised the flavor complexity marginally, but the overall impression was that it was not exceptional. A commitment to local and artisanal ingredients is always commendable, but not more than a commitment to quality, flavor and value. read more

I'm constantly surprised by the savory taste of the pizza; I wouldn't say it's the best pizza I've ever had but it's certainly up there.
