While Chris has consistent 5 star reviews, I wish I had seen another perspective before working with him, which is why I'm writing this now. Unfortunately, he was not a fit for us and our dog and in the short time we worked with him did more damage than good, which we are still unlearning. We have a shy dog with a lot of fear of unfamiliar things. She was reactive to people and dogs she didn't know (growling and barking) and we were trying to figure out how to help her. Based on the awesome reviews, we tried Chris (via group class and a couple one on one sessions) but very quickly realized her behavior was getting worse under his guidance, not better. Chris had us do things like spray her with a water bottle if she growled or barked and teach her to drop to the ground if we jingled a chain (we taught her this by randomly surprising her by laying the chain on her back when she wasn't looking). Chris frames a dog who can follow a command from across a room (like down-stay) as "polite" but this drill sergeant approach does nothing to build any trust with your dog. We followed his guidance for a short time but noticed our dog getting more anxious and fearful and starting to react to things she hadn't before. When she started growling at kids and Chris suggested more down-stays and water bottle spraying (which was what got us to that point to begin with), we knew he wasn't for us. We have since found a trainer that specialized in dogs with fear and I understand her so much better now. It makes no sense to treat a fear reaction with more things that cause fear and distrust. I feel really guilty that we ever tried these strategies and years later, we are still trying to help our dog recover from them. We have learned that we can teach her to be polite and well behaved while also treating her with kindness and respect. She's slowly rebuilding confidence and trust and getting better with people and dogs in a much more supportive way. I debated writing this review for a long time. It's been about 2 yrs since we used Chris. But I was hanging out with a friend yesterday who had the same negative experience w Chris (and hasn't shared it) and feel like this perspective is not represented in the reviews. Chris is clearly a fit for some but for those with dogs that have fear and social anxiety, I suggest doing your research to find someone else. read more

I was amazed at how quickly Chris took control of our 1-year old, German Shepherd mix, Jack, who is a jumper. Chris is amazing. When I adopted my puppy, the rescue made me agree to get him training. I found Chris and ended up sending him to Chris's six week Boot Camp. Because I felt guilty Chris would even let me come visit him on the weekends which most places won't. I was amazed at how good my dog was after the six weeks. Chris at American K-9 is amazing! We have two Australian Cattle Dog puppies (a energetic, strong willed breed) that we picked up at 6 weeks old. We also have 2 kids under 10. Before we sent her to Chris she had normal puppy behaviors - jumping, didn't know how to sit/stay, etc. Chris has you visit weekly and after a week of Kona being with Chris her demeanor was incredible. We've had Chris coming to our house twice to teach us how to behave our malinois/GSD mix. Starting with the dog jumping into the couch and barking at Chris when approaching the door, Chris walked us through some basics on behaviors and made "magic" within the first 15 minutes. After asking us to exercise the instruction he gave us we were able to properly control the dog even with contractors coming to our home. A month later Chris came back, this time helping us out walking the dog on the sidewalk also while other dogs came by. He introduced another few little tricks to us and left.
