I'm a small business owner in Boston and Cambridge. I contacted Comcast Spotlight to inquire about…read morewhat the costs of advertising on cable would be. I spoke to Kevin and Kaitlyn, who were two account executives that came out to my Boston office. I was told at our meeting that I should advertise for at least 3 months to see results. Kevin mentioned that he values repeat business over a quick buck. I created some commercials and have been advertising with them for a few months. I'll be honest, it's exciting to see your material on television. It was a proud moment for me and my partners and Comcast Spotlight was a part of that. However, some problems became apparent once we started getting documentation of our time slots for advertising. On the 3rd month, we decided to up our budget with some new commercials. I asked about advertising on NESN, because we wanted to advertise to those watching the Red Sox games. I had watched a few NESN broadcasts before asking about this, because I wanted to see if local advertisers were getting on during the games. I only saw a few. I spoke to Kaitlyn, my executive, and she said that although spots during the game were competitive, that it really just depended on the zone. She quelled my concerns about being boxed out of the NESN baseball game slots. However, what I have experienced is the exact opposite. I was sold on slots between 5pm and 12pm (Primetime!), but what I ended up being placed in was slots just after 5pm and just before 12 pm on a night where the baseball game started at 7:20PM. Comcast has pointed out that one of my commercials did air during a game last week in Framingham, which was 1 of of over 100 commercials around the state. On positive note, after we reached about $10,000.00 in spending with spotlight, I was offered tickets to a baseball game. The game was nice, but it didn't appear that there were enough seats outside in the stands, so my guest and I were asked to sit inside the booth. I have not received any calls or business from my advertising with Comcast, although that could be for any variety of reasons. I think some of Comcast Spotlight's own commercials even announce that what they do is fill empty (less appealing) advertising spots with local ads, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised there. However, I was disappointed with what seemed like a lack of candor from them. It also appears that after I increased my budget and geography with Spotlight, they did not cancel my previous contract for an area that was included in my second contract, which is something we had discussed. My understanding was that the new contract would void the previous contract, because otherwise we would be doubling the air-time. I did discuss this with my rep, but is seems they continued to run the ads from the first contract as well as the second, larger contract. Perhaps I was a bit naive with respect to speaking with ad salespersons, but my advise would be to be very careful if you are going to do business with these folks and keep all of your conversations in writing.
