They have lunch specials which are an extremely reasonable price for lunch time, which includes a small soup (mise, hot and sour, and one other I think) or salad, along with the dish of your choice. Also bento boxes too. I got their pad thai with the hot and sour soup. The soup was not really spicey or that flavorful, had a thick consistency, and was barely served warm. Can't say I liked it. The pad thai on the other hand was actually pretty decent, and the chicken in it was cooked well. Not bad overall, especially for the price. Finding an affordable fresh sushi lunch special in Midtown is somewhat of an art form. I was weekly making a 10 minute walk from my office to Tenzan on 53rd and decided to look for a similar lunch special to try (3 rolls with a soup or salad for around 13$). Lucky for me, after doing some research..I found this place about 2 blocks away. Maki Combo-For 13$ including tax you get 3 rolls with a small salad with ginger dressing on the side. The rolls taste very fresh but are a little on the smaller size. The salad is a little unappealing but the dressing is really good (would prefer a soup though) I have not physically ate here but looks like a clean trendy Japanese spot, nice atmosphere. Oftentimes the food is not fresh, & not made with ingredients listed on the menu & not as described; for example, I ordered a salad with glass noodles, but the chef made it with rice noodles. The dishes are inconsistent (one day the hot sesame noodles are made with sliced cucumbers & hot sauce, next day just sesame seeds thrown on top). I used to go there for Happy Hour which is pretty good deal and the servers are nice; however the new hostess Sarah has a cold, rude & judgmental attitude toward customers and is not a nice person, so the restaurant does not feel like the friendly, easygoing environment it used to be when Ken was bartending there before the pandemic. Decided to check out this place for lunch and was satisfied. Their lunch special bento box is about $5 cheaper than other Asian fusion restaurants in the area but still the same decent taste. The waitstaff is pleasant and they go above and beyond to make sure you're comfortable while waiting. I was offered water as I waited for my food to be prepared. The food, itself, was good. Went there for lunch with a group. Food was ok ordered a shrimp dish but it was way over seasoned that you could hardly taste the shrimp. The wait staff are very rude... can't remember who ordered what and just shout out the order. In addition, they demand and tell you how to tip and don't apologize when they miscalculated the bill. Amaze is one of the best values for lunch in the midtown area. Service is quick - both for takeout and dine-in. The menu is pretty damn broad; you can take your pick from a variety of different cuisines. There are Japanese, Thai and Chinese options. I usually opt for Sushi. For $9.95, you get 3 rolls of your choice plus a soup/salad. The sushi certainly isn't midtowns best but it certainly beats the refrigerated garbage you're reduced to at most of the nearby stops and delis. The yellowtail scallion roll here is great - no doubt my roll of choice. I've tried dishes off of the other menus but haven't been as impressed. (also so I don't get booted off Yelp for turning this into a Livejournal entry there will be attenuated references to the actual restaurant) Grandpa is in his mid-60s, with glasses and a beer gut that enters the room before he does, and wears an elaborate cardigan that looks both very expensive and very ugly (in other words, I immediately covet it). Grandpa probably uses the word "whippersnapper" in daily life and when he drinks too much schnapps. Nevertheless, Grandpa has somehow managed to pull massive game, because he walks in with a blonde who is two galaxies away from his batting league, demands that she sit next to him as opposed to across from him, and sidles his hand up her sweet young knee. Grandpa now finds himself in a bit of a predicament. Grandpa wants an evening in a hip Midtown establishment alone with Baby, supping $5 saketinis (one star) and maybe navigating the uncharted territory of mid-thigh this time. Instead, Grandpa gets squeezed into a windowless box on the second floor with four twenty-somethings who are already a few drinks in and plowing through a third order of sushi pizza (two stars). Grandpa is not pleased but swallows his displeasure, because Baby has just muttered some sweet nothing into his ear. Yessir, this evening looks promising: no distractions (the waitress has decided to treat their cozy private room as the next black hole), the drinks are actually quite boozy, and Baby is flushed and showing acres of leg. She leans forward, "Oh, Grandpa, I just ..." The table of horrible girls bursts into a cacophony of drunken laughter. Dammit. "What was that, Baby?" "I said, I want to-" "You want to do what?" Grandpa has had enough. This is his night, dammit. He pushes his chair back, Baby's hand on his arm tightens, he puffs his chest out, and hollers, "TOO LOUD! It's getting too loud in here."* Grandpa is triumphant. Adrenaline swishes down his veins. One girl mutters, "Well, it's only going to get louder." Grandpa is not going to take such back-talk lying down. "Well, you're going to have to be quiet until we finish our meal." The girl shoots back: "We just ordered a fifth round of drinks and we have food on the way." Grandpa vows to eat every last shred of the seaweed salad to out-stay such a disrespectful hooligan. The girls turn back to their story, but in much quieter tones, Baby is shaking with pride**, and Grandpa has a sudden urge to unbutton his shirt, kick his legs onto the table, and smoke a cigar. Never mind the fact that he almost got into a screaming match with people forty years younger. Total domination has suddenly whetted his appetite, he devours one eel roll after the other (because raw fish gives you cancer), and Baby is tugging on his sleeve to leave. Fin. *Here is where you spoiled the punchline of a joke that had been percolating in my brain for two months. I have to mention how accommodating the staff at this restaurant is to their customers needs. My uncle has special dietary needs and tends not to eat out because of it, but it was rainy and cold and we were starving and an hour from home. We went here during the busy lunch hour rush. The place was pretty packed. Being so busy, they had a very high turnover time. From the time we were ready to order to the when we paid our bill, the whole lunch took less than 30 minutes. I've never had such quick service! I've been to Amaze a few times during my lunch break. It's always relatively crowded during the week when I go, but the food is worth the wait. Even so, it's never a very long wait for a table. I normally travel solo so I can just grab a seat at the bar. The service is very quick, and very....cold? Not sure if that's the best choice of word, but all the workers there seem to have the mentally of "I'm here to do my job and that's it." Which doesn't bother much anyway. They always come and check on your table to take away any dirty dishes or refill you with water without having to be asked. I've only had one mishap at Amaze regarding service. My waitress didn't speak very much English and didn't realize I ordered an appetizer. When I asked her about it, instead of going to another sever that maybe spoke better English she just stared at me until I said forget it. The food is good. The food is the regular mediocre stuff you'd find at any Chinese sushi spot. I can only speak to the components of my lunch bento ($9) and how everyone else's food looked. And the modest slab of salmon in my bento was actually delicious, crisped up and tender. Amaze is amazingly crowded, starting right around 12:30pm. You won't be seated until your whole party is present. The space is kind of worn down, with that interesting ambiance of "Oops here's a food stain on the wall, let's drape over it with LED lights." I just had the WORST, most unexpected and disappointing experience at Amaze. I came today around 2:20 when it was a little less crowded than the typical lunch rush but for some reason, something felt very off when I came in the restaurant. Usually there would be a waiter that would greet you and seat you, but it felt as if ALL the waiters (and the manager) was ignoring me to be seated, or I was just invisible to them. I waited for about 8 minutes until another couple came after me and stood behind me and asked if I was waiting. A few more minutes passed and still no one came to ask us to be seated! The woman behind me got concerned then told the manager that we had been waiting for a while to be seated, then a waiter came and told me to sit at one of the booths. The female waiter came and took my order, and I got one of my favorites, the Thai Basil Chicken with brown rice. The salad came out quickly, followed by the entree. When I received my meal, the food was very warm but not hot and steaming as it usually is. Nevertheless, I continued to eat my meal so I could head back to work. As I was finishing my dish, I noticed something strange on the onion and found a hair in my food! I grew very confused and upset, then told the waiter what happened. Then he said that he would tell the manager when the manager came downstairs from the second floor. After waiting about 5 minutes, I grew even more impatient and asked where the manager was, and the waiter said he was right there and then the waiter brought the plate to show him. The manager looked at me, looked at the plate, and as the waiter came back to my table said, "it's not a hair, it's lemongrass." When does lemongrass ever look like hair?? They've gotta be bullshitting me. So I told the couple sitting next to me what the waiter said and even they couldn't believe it! So I googled what lemongrass looks like just to show them and still they refused to show any type of remorse, say sorry, or even say don't worry about the check. NO. The asshole manager said I still have to pay for the food AFTER seeing the hair in it! I became extremely irate and repeated that I refused to pay for it. Afterwards, I took my belongings, zipped up my coat and BOUNCED. See, this situation could've ended on a much better note. All they had to do was say ok sorry about that and not charge me. But the fact that they figuratively spit in my face by saying I still need to pay my hard earned money after a sanitary issue on their part is absurd. I'm extremely saddened to even write this long-winded review because I've been eating here with my sister for about two years, and we both come here so often that even the female waiter asks my sister and I for each other. Maybe this was just a bad day, but for this being the first time in 2018 I eat at Amaze, it's shown me that I need to make better choices and eat out less often and cook my own food myself to avoid this disappointment. This is my new Happy Hour spot! LOVE this place! It took a moment for the one female server to warm up to our table's energy, but she was lovely once she understood us. The male server was a jolly joy! Perfect balance of skill, flattery, and humor. Love him! The happy hour drink prices are ridiculous! The list is large and varied. The shots are awesome. And they make a really solid LI Iced Tea, and a really good Manhattan (I don't like Manhattans, and I didn't struggle when my friend cut herself off and asked me to take it to the head ;-). The fried California Roll on the Happy Hour Menu is stoopid good! ALL of the rolls we on point: both the regular and the special. The Bulldozer Roll took the award for best as it literally melted in our mouths. But that Giant Squid Roll was innovative, perfect presentation, and SOOOO divine!!!! We also enjoyed their version of the spicy Szechuan dumpling. 8 or 10 dumplings. Nice balance of peanut and heat, though I could have used more presence of meat (presuming there is meat in it?). We had five rolls (including three specials), tons of hootch, and two apps. Only $110 at the end of a 2.5 hour night! And we could have done less damage with sticking to regular rolls. Ive eaten here many times. The food's always been a hit or miss. Today 05/31/2021, I called in to place a lunch order (have done this many times in the past) and picked it up roughly around 2pm. The food was packaged in a plastic bag and then inside of a second brown paper bag that was sealed and stapled shut. Upon getting back to my office, I took the food out of the plastic bag then proceeded to rip open the sealed paper bag. And two roaches come out of the paper bag with my food. It was so disgusting. Given the way that the food was packaged I'm left to believe that it was in the food and escaped into the bag because how could anyone package food and not see two roaches in a bag? Either way the roaches came from in the bag with the food and thus from in the restaurant. I have video footage. The restaurant manager didn't even seem to care nor did he even seem surprised. No one even offered an apology. I requested a refund but this needs to be known and investigated. This is food that people are eating, truly disgusting. read more
