I've gotten the pork belly and octopus 4 times. One of the times I asked that the pork belly be made on the crisper side. The whole skewer was burnt and ended up being inedible. Still as good as it was back in ~2018 when we lived a few blocks away. Stopped in for brunch on a Saturday, and we were glad we made reservations because it was busy within 15 minutes of opening. We had the steak and egg breakfast tacos (delicious but on the small side) and the breakfast roti (huge, fun mix of flavors!). Excellent Bloody Mary. The space is smaller than I remember, but very cozy. The chips were fresh and crispy, and the cheese dip was savory with plenty of garlic and other seasonings. Pea shoot tacos - fantastic. I loved the fried chickpeas in particular, super crispy and well seasoned. The tortillas also tasted very fresh. Rice and beans - the rice is herbaceous, the beans are rich and comforting, and both are balanced well by the tart and slightly spicy pico. My meal came to around $40 with tax and tip. this place is walking distance from me and I've passed it so may times thinking I want to eat here. can't believe it took me 2 years to actually have a meal here but I'm so glad I finally did and it certainly won't be the last time. we walked in on a tue and got two seats at the bar. the service was prompt and friendly. I had the peashoot tacos and my husband the chicken milanesa. I loved my tacos. the roasted chickpeas added the perfect crunch. my husband liked his chicken but generally preferres the italian style where the chicken is much thinner. overall, this was a lovely, yummy, dinner with a nice atmosphere. we will be back for sure! read more

Restaurant Week Lunch -- $30 Special Went to restaurant week with my sister and finally checked out this little corner spot I've walked by dozens of times but never tried. It's a small, charming place -- definitely has that "hidden gem" vibe from the outside. Inside, the ambiance was open and welcoming, with both indoor and outdoor seating. We arrived right at opening, so it was quiet and not crowded, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, service left a bit to be desired. We ordered everything at once, as is typical for the restaurant week menu, but saw others who came in after us receive their food before we did. That was a little frustrating and set the tone. Appetizers: We started with the snapper tostaditos and the chicken flauta. The snapper dish came with just three small bites, and it was seriously lacking in seasoning -- it needed salt and didn't leave much of an impression. The chicken flauta, on the other hand, was much better: nice crunchy exterior, flavorful filling, and tender meat. Definitely the stronger of the two. Entrees: I had the chicharrón-crusted shrimp -- good flavor overall, but the shrimp were slightly overcooked. My sister ordered the steak enchiladas, which oddly had the same sauce as the chicken flauta. While not terrible, the repetition was disappointing. Overall: Nothing was bad, but nothing stood out either. It was a decent lunch, but nothing memorable enough to bring me back. Heard about this place that got a Michelin star and decided to try. It's a small space and we went in around 5 pm on a Thursday . We were told they had tables reserved so was offered a high top and then they moved around some reservations, most of the food was good, my reservations about this place is that the food is all spiced the same way. Most of the foods are heavily spicy and at times it made it hard for me to eat. But nevertheless everything still tasted good and the drinks were great. I visited Alta Calidad while on the hunt for a Mexican spot during NY Restaurant Week and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Snapper Tostaditas, Carne Asada, and Churros. My favorite of the bunch was the Carne Asada. I would order that again if I returned. The service was great. The waitress answered any questions we had and the drinks came out fast. This was great value for a price of $45 (because it was during restaurant week). The ambiance was great, with natural lighting and good music. A friend and I stopped into Alta Calidad in Prospect Heights this week for happy hour. The classic margaritas, several wines and beer were included as well as some food. I had the classic margarita and it was good! My friend, has a glass of rose which she really didn't like. We ordered the carne asada quesadilla (good!) and spinach quest fondido (just ok, we expected something less watery). Overall, a good Happy Hour spot on Mon-Thurs (3-6pm). Maybe I was just in a good mood because I was two blocks and a couple hours away from great seats at Madonna's Celebration tour, but a recent dinner at Alta Calidad convinced me that this spot is a clear cut above the other Mexioptions in the neighborhood. Alta toes a delicate line of being a specialer-than-usual neighborhood spot, without tipping over into being precious chichi "elevated Mexican" cuisine (looking at you, Xixa.) The food? Portion sizes are appropriately restrained, in keeping with Alta's glamorous, serious vibe. Dishes come out almost inconveniently quickly, but everything I ate was really good. The guacamole was accompanied by homemade, well-seasoned chips; the pumpkin blossom quesadilla was nicely executed, and my husband liked his brisket tacos. The rice and beans were a serviceable filling side dish. Alta Calidad also passed my official margarita test: my picky Virgo husband did not make a funny face on first sip, and reordered the same drink. If only you knew, reader, what a towering achievement that is. They have an appropriate panoply of tequila options, but also not too many margaritas on the menu - a classic, a vegetal "jardin", and a spicy pineapple one. One small thing to be aware of: a "high top" reservation may well mean you're sitting at the bar. A friendly bartender and good service made this fine, but I was expecting a table. Overall, I think Alta Calidad ("high quality") is truth in advertising: not revolutionary or worthy of a special pilgrimage, but high quality and well deserving of a visit if it fits into your plans. read more

I've been eyeing this restaurant for years, and I finally got delivery today. I was finishing the movie The Menu, and decided that I wanted an elevated dining experience at home so I finally gave in and ordered. In case you haven't seen The Menu, it's about a restaurant serving high brow meals that are more fanciful than necessarily flavorful. It's about how restaurants are often pushed to be more innovative and cerebral to the point that the actual pure dining experience can suffer. Then the gourmand patrons were punished for forcing a celebrity chef to get to this point. Unfortunately, my meal reminded me a lot of The Menu. My meal arrived looking so colorful and inviting, but the actual flavors lacked in the end. I started with the octopus and pork belly over rice. The only delicious part of the meal was the pico de gallo on the sides, which mixed beautifully with the rice. The pork belly and octopus lacked seasoning. I understand the desire to let natural flavors stand on their own, but it just felt neglectful. Certain foods NEED salt at least! If you order this, prepare to use salt, other seasonings, and a sauce on the proteins. The rice was pretty good, but again could use a little love. I also got the queso with chorizo, since I'm a firm believer that cheese makes everything better. Clearly I was wrong! The cheese was the equivalent of a slightly warm shower- it's better than nothing, but left me feeling deflated. Dejected. Confused. I really don't understand where the flavor was here. This is the perfect meal to have while watching The Menu, or if you have salt restrictions on your diet, or if you don't mind seasoning your own food. If I was dragged here by friends I could smile and go along with it, so while it's not the best it's not the worst. Godspeed! read more

The person on the phone was extremely on point and explained that no reservations were available because of an event at Barclays on the same night, yet they somehow figured out how to squeeze us in. When we were there, our group had a fair number of questions. Our group also had a toddler who prompted further requests. The waitstaff was patient and kind, and both the chef and the waitstaff worked with us. Great service! Best of all, the food was delicious and unique. We had been there a number of years prior to celebrate my birthday and had a similar food experience -- tasty, unique, and memorable. The vibe is casual, but if you felt like making it more formal, you would not look out of place. You could have a nice date night or post-work dinner at Alta Calidad. The servers are attentive but not overbearing. The tacos were tasty and interesting. We didn't love the duck a la plancha, but I'm a tough customer when it comes to duck. The yuca tots will be disappointing if you go in expecting the crunch texture of tater tots. Instead, they have a light exterior crisp and a creamy inside. I chose to wait outside until my food was ready. Service was fast and friendly The grilled Mexican street corn is everything you love from Mexican street corn just without the hassle of biting into a cob. It was flavorful and slightly spicy. I pretty much at the whole bowl of it. I also ordered both the beef brisket and roasted fish tacos. They were equally excellent bites. The one thing I wasn't much a fan of, was the yuca tots. I was expecting it to be crispy like tater tots but it was more like a fried ball of mashed potatoes. Not crispy at all. I did like the chipotle aioli that comes with the dish though. I've been here a couple times and must say that the food has been consistently good. This is a great place to try if you're in the area. I stumbled across this place while walking through Vanderbilt Ave while it was closed to cars on the weekend. The restaurant had seating on the sidewalk and out on the street along Vanderbilt but personally I think the side street seating (on Dean Street) was the best experience. They have planters along the tables growing real veggies and herbs! It's so cute! We got the guac and chips to share ($13). The chips were a little too thick and hard but I didn't mind cause the guac was so good! We even ordered extra chips to balance out the ratio cause there was more guac than we expected! I got the pumpkin blossom quesadilla ($14). It was delicious though I wish there was more filling to tortilla ratio (it was quite thin). It looked small but having eaten half the guac and chips appetizer, I was full. Place is a bit pricy for what you get but come here for the outdoor dining experience! COVID times assessment: Make sure to get a table at the outdoor seating along Dean Street. They space the tables comfortably far apart and it's really open! No plastic dividers between tables to squeeze in more capacity. Great service too and everyone has masks on. read more

He made a delicious cold brew martini for me, as well as recommended the Roasted Fish tacos. My friend got the Carne Asada tacos. We were just out looking for a laidback dinner, but Eric made it extra fun. The food came out quickly, and although it was only 2 tacos a platter, we were stuffed afterwards. I had a great time at Alta Calidad. The wait staff was incredibly friendly and patient with my group of indecisive (mostly me) costumers. During the summer, they sometimes shut down the street nearby which is nice when dining on the sidewalk. This is also a great place to come for drinks. I loved all of the tacos that I tried. The mango salsa and pistachio mole on the roasted fish tacos was excellent. If you love yuca, you absolutely have to try the yuca "tater tots" with chipotle aioli. The tacos are filling!! Yesterday was my self-care Saturday. I did a lot of strolling through Brooklyn in the sunshine and stopping at different spots, just because. Alta Calidad was my fave "just because" of the day. The front door host seated me outside immediately and didn't sneer or grumble when I complained that I didn't like my seat. I was placed at a drinks and appetizers only table on the sidewalk and I was so satisfied. The Margaritas at Alta Calidad are delicious and will sneak up on you in the best way. Nachos were fresh and super crispy and the guac here is the smoothest, freshest I think I've had, ever. They come with a dish of spicy salsa if you require extra kick. Staff is attentive and super accommodating and I was asking for all the things: Charge my phone? Another drink... please now! Could you switch my seat??? To make my time at Alta even better was the whole, Spike Lee Joint vibe yesterday. Vanderbilt Ave was closed off to traffic, all the restaurants on the strip offered indoor and outdoor seating without vax drama. One of the bars had classic R&B tunes pumping through the streets. It felt like the best block party. I ordered soft tacos to go, chicken and shrimp. The chicken tacos were honestly very bland but dem shrimp tacos...BRUH! Excellent. Perfectly fried jumbo shrimp with shredded cabbage inside a soft shell. I could've downed a dozen. Don't come to Alta Calidad expecting to drink and dine on a budget.
