Yesterday was my self-care Saturday. I did a lot of strolling through Brooklyn in the sunshine and stopping at different spots, just because. Alta Calidad was my fave "just because" of the day. The front door host seated me outside immediately and didn't sneer or grumble when I complained that I didn't like my seat. I was placed at a drinks and appetizers only table on the sidewalk and I was so satisfied. The Margaritas at Alta Calidad are delicious and will sneak up on you in the best way. Nachos were fresh and super crispy and the guac here is the smoothest, freshest I think I've had, ever. They come with a dish of spicy salsa if you require extra kick. Staff is attentive and super accommodating and I was asking for all the things: Charge my phone? Another drink... please now! Could you switch my seat??? To make my time at Alta even better was the whole, Spike Lee Joint vibe yesterday. Vanderbilt Ave was closed off to traffic, all the restaurants on the strip offered indoor and outdoor seating without vax drama. One of the bars had classic R&B tunes pumping through the streets. It felt like the best block party. I ordered soft tacos to go, chicken and shrimp. The chicken tacos were honestly very bland but dem shrimp tacos...BRUH! Excellent. Perfectly fried jumbo shrimp with shredded cabbage inside a soft shell. I could've downed a dozen. Don't come to Alta Calidad expecting to drink and dine on a budget. Three drinks and an order of food to go after tax and tip, made me wish that I had been there with a date who was paying. read more

Came here for brunch with friends and we had an amazing experience! Starting off with drinks, they had an amazing frozen margarita - perfect for a Summer day. We started off with some guac and chips for the table. Then we got the taco sampler (great choice to try a bunch of flavors, I really recommend it!), side of rice and beans (yum) and the yucca fritters (so creamy on the inside, get this!). We were pretty satisfied but had to try some dessert. We got the carrot tres leches cake (so good! How cool is the halwa on top that looks like cotton candy?) and churros (fresh, crispy, chocolate sauce was delicious). The service was great. I stumbled upon Alta Calidad on my wya to a work meeting and remembered it was on my to try list of the many restaurants I have jotted down on my notes. I went in the afternoon around 2ish where it seemed relatively quiet, I ordered the Mescalero, I was very pleased on how refreshing and crisp the drink was. I ordered the pumpkin blossom quesadillas (wow!!!!!) From the crispy tortilla to the Oaxaca cheese oozing from the plate, I really enjoyed this plate I also ordered the octopus that comes with pork belly potatoes poblano rice and aioli... I didn't love it but it has potential, I do appreciate the inventive way they paired this dish. Yummy yummy. I was able to get reservations on short notice. The food here is really good. Very fresh and authentic. The service is awesome, very attentive and friendly! We had three different types of tacos and an octopus dish with pork belly which was really good but it could have been warmer, the rice was so flavorful and just scrumptious. The tacos were filled with so much meat! The tempura shrimp one had jumbo shrimp and the batter was not overwhelming. The drinks were strong, watermelon cocktail was very good. Came here in a big group for lunch on a weekday and had a wonderful time! Their menu is great and there's something for everyone. We started with the guacamole which was really delicious and then most people in our group ordered tacos and a side. The tacos are only 2 per serving but it's still a big portion because they are generous in their toppings! I ended up being too full to eat most of my side which was rice and beans. All the tacos are served on corn tortillas which are really good too. The staff was extremely friendly and patient with our large group. I would definitely recommend this spot if you're in the neighborhood and are looking for flavorful and unique tacos! read more

OK, so if you follow our reviews, you know we are NOT brunch people. Far from it- we find that most restaurants check their creativity at the door, and instead throw together some random egg dishes and other slightly altered American standards. Happy to say that wasn't the case at Alta Calidad. Hands down we had the best boozy brunch we've had in all of NYC, topped off by margaritas that remind me of Mexico (and I've had A LOT of margaritas in Mexico). The Mexican roti dish we had was creative and tasty and amazing in every way... Topped only by a steak sandwich which was about as perfect a steak sandwich that I've ever had. Alta Calidad completely blew me away! My friend suggested we go here for a quick brunch before a concert and we both were so shocked as to how amazing everything was. As far as the food, our server was super friendly and helpful in guiding us with suggestions as to what to order since it was our first time visiting. We ended up doing the bottomless brunch option and I ordered the Chilaquiles while my friend got the Steak & Egg sandwich. We both LOVED our meals!! Came here on a date (without a reservation) and was greeted by a distracted host. He explained that because we didn't have reservation, we had to sit either at the bar or the 5 seater high top facing the window even though we counted four empty tables (for two and four people). He also insisted we finish within 90 min because of reservations. We didn't leave because it was particularly cold and windy that night, but trust we absolutely would have. Regardless, our server was much kinder. The drinks were very made. We both ordered the Mezcalero, each was shaken to perfection. The food was also very delicious. Dined during COVID outdoor dining in November. Ample space outside, tables set up nicely with about a half under heat lamps. There is often a wait, but they take your number and will give you a text when it's ready. Here's what was ordered: - Steak tacos (2 per order) - Great flavor, good char, and good portion of diced steak on top of a fresh tortilla - Pork belly and octopus over rice - 2 skewers with tender octopus and pork belly. The rice was flavorful, a little zest and kick - Pork shoulder al pastor - strips of grilled pork with warm tortillas on the side and green salsa. All three dishes came at once and this was last to be eaten, so I admit it got kind of cold by the time I tried it. Staff was attentive and in good spirits, which is such a reprieve during all of this. It was around high 40s to low 50s that night so we could survive without the heat lamps, since they were all taken, but I did start to shiver towards the end of the night. Let me preface this paragraph by saying that the food itself is 5 stars. If you're looking to go somewhere that has bomb, elevated Mexican cuisine, Alta Calidad is your spot. With that being said-- The 3 stars is for everything else that overshadows their food and quality of ingredients. They seem to hire servers that exclusively have a bad attitude and who make zero efforts to take care of their customers. For food that isn't exactly inexpensive, and as a server myself, I expect an AVERAGE amount of consideration, at least. My boyfriend and I have been here 4 times. 3 of those times we sat at a table, 1 time at the bar. The bartender was extremely accommodating and great at her job. That appeared to be a one-off as the three times at the table, we were often left waiting for long periods of time without placing orders, and then waiting even longer for the food to come out. The last time we were here, we waited FIFTEEN minutes to be asked what we wanted to order, in an empty restaurant. The initial drink order came out wrong, and we were met with a startled reaction when I had asked to change it. The food took an equally long time to come out, and when we asked to order a side of guacamole (which we have done every time we've been there), the waiter told us the price would be $18.00. For a side of guacamole. EIGHTEEN. Eighteen is the price of salsa and guacamole, plus chips at this place. We ordered that initially, and upon learning that our now-empty guac would cost an additional $18 to reorder, I was floored. What? On what planet is a small side of guac the same price as a full appetizer? The cherry on top of this newly inflated price was the aforementioned smug attitude of the waiters and the wait times, both consistently long and bad. But the real offense to the neighborhood is that they jacked the up price of guacamole to $18 right after Covid, siting that there was an avocado shortage...however they've never brought the price back down. It was mid afternoon and they were still setting up the tables on Vanderbilt's weekend only Open Street dining area so we took a quiet table on the Dean St. side. Their COVID handling seems good. The tables are well spaced and reasonably comfortable. the touchless menu worked great once I turned my phone sideways and enlarged the text. And everything seemed very clean and safe. Our margaritas were on point, as they always have been. We opted to try three of their taco pairs- Charred Steak for T, Shrimp a la Plancha for me, & Charred Cauliflower to share in places of an appetizer. T reported that the steak tacos were a bit bland. I really liked the saucy shrimp, I spite of the messy fingers. The cauliflower tacos had A LOT of cauliflower but no char- There's potential, but we would have liked them a lot more with about 1/3 of the cauliflower and some char. Came here for dinner with friends last night and everything we ordered was excellent! It's a little pricey though, because they are a small plate restaurant, and they recommend 2-3 plates per person. The dishes we ordered ranged from $10 to $22 per plate, and we spent $150 for four people before tip. I was very impressed by how they handled my food allergy. They modified a lot of the dishes so that I could have them, reminded me when giving us the food what I could and could not eat, and suggested adding extra sides to replace the components I could not eat. They charged us for those extra sides though, which I was not expecting for a restaurant of this price level. Service was quite slow but attentive. They spaced out bringing out the food and refreshed our plates between rounds of food. - tostadas: really fresh and crispy, and my friends who had the guacamole said that it was excellent. The ratio skewed high on the guacamole side and low on the chip side. - ceviche: this was really unique - I had never had a ceviche that was so wet and saucy, but the flavors worked well together and the fish tasted fresh. - carrot tamal: excellent, albeit a bit small - pork belly and octopus: I was really surprised they could make this without garlic/onion! The pork belly was not too fat and the octopus was very soft and tender, though the octopus could've used more spices. - squash beignets: reminded me of onion rings. They were so good and crispy and fresh! - savoy cabbage: also very yummy - roti: this was a special of the day, so they don't always have it. I stayed with a friend in Prospect Heights last month, and we came to Alta Calidad for a casual weekday lunch. It was a cute spot, small and charming with cheerful, modern decor and an easy vibe. We booked a table online, but that turned out to be unnecessary. The restaurant was almost entirely empty the whole time we were there. I guess Tuesday is not a busy day. The atmosphere was pleasant and service was prompt and friendly. We shared the queso fundido "complicado" to start, then the charred steak and roasted mahi-mahi tacos, which came two to an order. The queso was my favorite part of the meal. This was a decadent, delicious melted cheese dip with chorizo and poblano peppers. It came with a side of fresh tortillas. The tacos came on these same tortillas, which were definitely excellent. I was less sold on what was inside them. The fish taco was the better of the two, and I liked it well enough, even if I didn't find it memorable. The mahi-mahi came with mango salsa, pistachio mole, and crispy shallots. On the lighter, healthier side of the taco spectrum, which isn't a bad thing. The steak taco was topped with crispy chihuahua cheese, tomatillo salsa, and cilantro, a heavier flavor combination. I actually liked how it tasted fine, but the steak was very tough. If I lived in Brooklyn, I'd probably give Alta Calidad another shot, as I liked the ambiance and the queso and tortillas were really fantastic. I can't believe I paid $14 for 2 tacos and it didn't even taste good. This is your typical trendy hipster over priced Mexican food. The food is overly salty and portion is super small. I came here for lunch with 2 friends and we ordered the guac and chips for appetizer ($13.5), steak tacos ($12), skate (fish) tacos ($14), pumpkin blossom quesadilla ($12) and the chicken fried steak sandwich ($15). We also had coffee ($5), grapefruit soda ($3.5) and a cocktail ($10). The guac is more like a side or garnish with 4 pieces of baked chips on it. Even with avocado price hike, their profit on this dish is ridiculous. Taste wise, the guac was ok, a little too salty and limey for my taste. The tacos were small. 3 bites and it's gone. Also way too salty and the steak was tough. The chicken fried steak was super dry and you must dip it in the sauce it came with else it tasted more like steak jerky. The pumpkin blossom quesadilla was the only thing I liked. It was super cheesy and not overly salty which is what I liked. Overall, we paid $40 per person (including tip) and we were still hungry when we left. Not to mentioned we were also super thirsty from all the sodium we just ate. Food here is excellent, though the taco portions are quite small. Iced tea is delicious. The decor and atmosphere are quite nice, pretty clearly catering to the millennial instagram crowd. The service, however, is really bad. The waitress with short dyed blonde hair sat us in a spot overflowing with other people's bags, then acted very annoyed when we scooted down one spot (in an almost entirely empty restaurant). She gruffly told us "I haven't wiped that one down," and then never offered to wipe it down. Never saw her again except to bring us our food. What a great spot to have in prospect heights. Fresh, delicious food and amazing cocktails. Had the El Jardin and the spicy pineapple margarita. Both were amazing and neither was too sweet, which is usually my complaint about fruity drinks. The guac was a generous portion and amazing. The chips are seasoned with tajin which is delicious. The street corn is top notch. I also had the fried shrimp tacos which had a delicious red sauce on them. The yucca tots were the only less than exceptional thing, nothing wrong just nothing amazing. We were walk ins for 11 am brunch on a Sunday, and got a spot outdoors on the side of the restaurant. It's a nice outdoor dining set up with good space between tables, and although our server was pleasant and friendly, we had to get up and go to the stand to flag him down for everything: more water, the check, more sauce. It was not unique to our group, as other patrons at other tables made comments like "we haven't had someone come take our order for 20 minutes" and such. The food was rather expensive for the small amounts. The beef brisket adobo tacos were good (but $7.50 a taco??) and the breakfast burrito was as expected. I was staying with a friend in Brooklyn and she recommended this cute little spot to check out for some prime Mexican food. They offer reservations which is nice, especially because the restaurant itself is smaller but quaint with cool art directly on the brick walls and interestingly shaped hanging lights. Definitely a prime spot for good food/drinks and even better conversation. Our servers were super friendly, attentive, and well-informed on the menu. We started out with the queso fundido complicado which was some of the best that I've had- staying melted and perfect for our soft tortillas. They also recommended an amazing special on the menu which was an interesting take on Roti with pickled red onions, cilantro, jalapenos, mozzarella, and awesome dried out salmon. The cheese is topped with honey and sunflower seeds that provide sweetness and the nice seed flavors with every bite. 5/5 Roti - This was a special when I visited and came topped with pickled onions, cactus, and wagyu meatballs. The meatballs provided pops of richness and the onions helped cut through the meat and sauce on the thin roti. 5/5 Tacos - Fish and shrimp. I just don't like corn tortillas as much as the flour counterpart. They are substantial and packed with the fresh made tortilla flavor. Wow wow wow! Incredible food at an amazing price point. Came here tonight with a group of 6 on a rainy day. Service was amazing, the waiter and waitress were always ready with a big smile and super helpful in helping us pick drinks. We got so much food! Steak tacos, shrimp tempura tacos, mahi mahi tacos, mangalista pork al pastor, pumpkin blossom quesadilla, chickpea tostadas, carrot tamal, guacamole, both queso fundidos, and plenty of drinks. The shrimp tempura and mahi mahi tacos were my absolute favorite but nothing on this menu was anything but delicious. The meats were loaded with flavor and topped with delicately treated accoutrements. The vegetarian dishes were beautifully crafted. The guacamole had a hint of heat that was a lovely surprise. The quesos were absolutely divine, with a crunchy fried cheese topping and amazingly soft corn tortillas to stuff with oozing queso. Chef Akhtar and staff have really cracked it with Alta Calidad ('high quality' in español). On July 2, 2021, this was the first time for my friend and I to dine at this reataurant. I am finding most Mexican dining tired and unimaginative. Not "Alta Calidad", which translates as "high quality". And high quality it is! We dined on beef brisket tacos adobo with banana leaves, guajillo and chihuahua cheese as an appetizer; for main dishes--"Berkshire"pork shoulder with salsa cruda and pineapple along with side of Brussels sprouts infused in Meyer lemon and guajillo honey; and finally for dessert, churros in acacia honey and stole chocolate sauce. We just had a sample of their outstanding selections. They have both indoor and permanent outdoor (in fair weather) dining opportunities including the weekend Vanderbilt Avenue Open Streets dining. Topping this great cuisine is the very fast and most courteous service provided as a team, from friendly greeting by host Brian, wait person Saul and very fast as courteous delivery and cleanup by Nicolas. I've been for both brunch and for dinner and the food was solid. For breakfast I had the steak and egg breakfast tacos. The crispy cheese on the tortillas is really good. Plus they have a deal where you get one entree and 1 hour of unlimited mimosas, margaritas, bloody Mary's or beer for $31. For dinner my boyfriend and I shared the octopus and pork belly dish, the steak tacos and the shrimp tacos. The breakfast steak tacos were better but the octopus dish was my favorite overall (sorry not pictured I ate it to quickly). The place is pretty small, but both times I went I was able to sit within a few minutes without a reservation. Also, there is outdoor seating when the weather is nice. Went for dinner. Guac+salsa and margs were good (though the guac+salsa did not come with enough chips). Brussels were good, though they had too much sauce on them. The tacos, yuca fries, and mains were very meh. read more

Carrot tamal (4.5 stars): savory and smoky mole over one of the most tender masa wrapped around cheesy roasted pepper Oyster mushrooms (4.5 stars): full of umami, soy forward, with garlic scapes. Could be a tad less salty but still completely devoured Soft shell crab special (4.5 stars): perfectly fried with a tomato-y mole that was almost Italian. Didn't really need the egg noodles but were good for mopping up sauce Octopus and pork belly (4 stars): very flavorful. The octopus and pork belly had a wide range of textures, from melt in your mouth to a little chewier/drier. Very fun to eat though, over a small bed of "paella" Service was fast and informative. We got one of the last tables for 2 outside! at 7pm on a Saturday. A little later than that and they were quoting about an hour. Would go back to try the shrimp tacos And lamb ribs! read more

This new Mexican spot just opened in the old Chuko space and the food is all excellent. Definitely get the cheesy Queso Fundido Complicado ($12) and some tacos. The tacos are non-traditional - the Striped Bass ($11) ones cakes as a hunk of fish along with some tortillas, while the Steak ($12) ones came as a thin, wide flat piece on the tortilla, and was actually way better than it looked. For the mains, the Trotter Carnitas ($16) were also excellent, but were mostly like another taco. For dessert, definitely try the great pillowy soft balls of Churros. This is a great little spot that's trying to be a cozy neighborhood spot, and hopefully it can do well to stay around for awhile. read more

This place allows reservations on Opentable and when making reservations you can reserve for high top, bar or regular table. I made a reservation for a weekday lunch thinking it was a just in case situation but the restaurant ended up being very crowded so it was good that I had made a reservation. We got the queso fundido complicado, mahi mahi taco, steak taco and the salad. The steak in the steak taco were a bit over cooked and were too dry but everything else was good. They are all tapas so meant to be shared. For two people, four dishes was a good amount. Not too much, not too little. They also have a huge outdoor seating area on the street for a nice day. Everything was wonderful I don't like pork but the pork and octopus skewers were actually fabulous. The shrimp tacos I definitely could've had 2 orders and the steak was good too. I think I'd like to return more towards the day time to try other things on the menu but so far so good I only have A coyote wish cocktail so I feel like I can't fully judge the whole menu but I loved it definitely up my alley if you like sipping cocktails. The space is cute and small and they do enforce mask and temp checks so don't forget yours. read more
