This restaurant should NOT have these negative reviews. There's truly a miscommunication. Know before you go... Al's is a historic gem that we need to appreciate in our community. Al's is not for everyone. It can't be changed inside or outside because it's on the STL Historic Landmark list so it is old, dark and nostalgic. There is NO menu. The servers explain what is available for courses 1-6. This is a table side, fine dining, top of the line food restaurant. It is expensive. Men must wear a jacket. It's old school. The servers have been there 40 plus years. Al's opened in 1925 so it's almost 100 years old! There are 130 historic landmarks in St. Louis. The Eads Bridge is #1 and Al's restaurant is #130. Frank Sinatra had his own table. Henry Fonda had a table. The list goes on. This spot is right on the riverfront and frequented by passengers via the river before the use of highways. Al's is the only restaurant to ever win an Emmy Award under the documentary category. It's the oldest family owned restaurant in the same location in STL. It's in its only 3rd and 4th generation of ownership. I had the lobster bisque, table aside Caesar, Chilean Seabass, Al's Potatoes and Broccoli! All was delicious. #stlouispescatarianapproved Stop in and see my new buddy Gary. He's a peach.

100 year old formal restaurant with a made to order menu and table service, located just north of Lacledes Landing near the St Louis riverfront. Service, and food is "old school" formal with historic decor that is a stand out. If you want a different experience at a $cost$, this is your place. The food is good and you will feel taken care of. f I could give this place less than 1 star I would. It was our wedding anniversary; we had reservations and the evening started out great. As soon as we arrived on the parking lot of Al's it started to go down hill. The parking lot is not secured, dark, gravel surface, limited and we saw a few unhoused and what looked to be a man and a child living in a car. We get inside the restaurant to not be greeted by anyone. A waiter from across the room said have a seat anywhere, we'll be with you. Needless to say there was one other table there of what looked like a business dinner. The same waiter comes over with less than a nice welcoming greeting and asked to take our order. We ordered drinks to start, (disastrous). The same waiter also made our old fashioned, which was horrible. It tasted like a blended fruit drink and looked like one as well. You can see the bubbles in the photo. I asked him did I hear a blender making these drinks, of course he lied and said no. We didn't finish it. We ordered appetizers that were equally horrible. My husband ordered Cajun shrimp that was simply shrimp cocktail. I ordered lobster bisque, which was microwaved canned soup. No lobster and no taste. You can see the skim on the top. At this point we had enough and were ready to leave. We told the waiter the food was horrible and we were not having dinner. He proceeded to argue with me and said we'll have to charge you a no entree fee. We argued back, he called the owner; which was no help at all. At this point to, salvage the evening; we said just give us the check. We'll go somewhere else to continue our celebration. Although this place has been around for the number of years as they have; it's time for them to close up shop. The place was a complete dive. The decor dated from the 60's and the 1 wait staff was not what he might have been 40 years ago. They charge the "no entree fee" as I'm sure their business must be slow and or customers just don't hang around to be treated horribly in addition to eating the tasteless, microwaved, dated and poor quality food. I have no doubt they make most of the money the same way the gouged us for ours and to boot the lousy POS had the nerve to charge us a 20% gratuity. We paid the check, left and went to a much better establishment to enjoy the rest of our anniversary. Please Please Please DO NOT GO TO THE PLACE!!!

Food is so amazing, the staff is very sweet and love their job. The pictures dont do this place justice because it's beautiful. I'm here on a Saturday night and there are only three full tables and an empty bar- please check this place out and their eight minute documentary

Ask the Community - Al's Steak House

    Do you have Chateubriand?

    Yes they do

Are the sides a la carte? Pricing in general for chicken dishes? Kids welcome?

Everything is ala carte. Al's is probably the most expensive steakhouse in St. Louis even for chicken. Children are welcomed but they should be well behaved. Al's is old school.

Now listen... for me, the flavors didn't quite punch me in the mouth the way true Cajun food should. I wanted a little more "who made this roux and how long did they stir it?" energy. BUT -- and this matters -- everything was fresh, well-cooked, and genuinely delicious. No frozen-tasting foolishness, just good seafood done right. I just wanted the seasoning to turn the volume knob up a notch or three. The seating situation started off a little sideways, like a crawfish running from the boil, but we got it wrangled and after that the night smoothed out just fine. Let's talk sides. Baby... these sides were small for the price. And look -- St. Louis has so many great spots where you get quality and value. The county can be tricky like that: the food delivers, but the prices sometimes think they're partying on Bourbon Street during peak Mardi Gras. Now I gotta say something that stayed with me all night -- that fish tank broke my heart. Those fish looked lonely. If you're gonna have a tank, give them some friends, some sparkle, maybe toss in a bead or two -- make it FUN. Right now it's giving "sad aquarium waiting for parade season." Tonic report from the bar: whew -- that tonic was way too sweet for my taste. My gin was confused, I was confused, so I tapped out and switched to iced tea, which did me just right. One thing I truly appreciated -- the owner is very personable and stopped by our table to say hello, which always earns major points. That kind of hospitality matters and adds to the experience. And here's my loving suggestion: lean HARD into Mardi Gras season. It's a BIG deal here in the Lou, and this place is perfectly set up for it. Beads, music, specials, colors, chaos -- give us a reason to yell laissez les bons temps rouler before the appetizers even hit the table. BUT HOLD UP -- because the real star of the night was our server Brittany, and baby... she was an absolute QUEEN Warm, fun, attentive, and made the whole night feel like a party. We laughed, we relaxed, and we had a blast. Brittany is the kind of server who makes you want to come back -- and maybe order dessert even when you swore you were done. All in all, Gulf Shores brings fresh seafood, good vibes, and Cajun-adjacent comfort. Turn the seasoning up, give the fish some friends, lean into Mardi Gras, rethink the tonic -- and if Brittany's in your section? You're already winning.

The dinning room wasn't very full but when they seated us they took us to what used to be a patio. Now it's enclosed and there is a bar a stage and plenty of seating. My problem was the fans that were blowing made it difficult to have a conversation with my wife across the table. I told the server it was almost too noisy and was having a hard time hearing him talk. He said he'd talk louder. That didn't really fix the problem. Not real sure why we were seated in this area because the dinning room had plenty of space. We had a little trouble communicating our order because of the noise. As I stated a couple times to our server. I communicated I have trouble hearing in areas like this and he just kept talking louder. Anyway we finally got our food ordered and went for a salad in the next room. My wife even commented on the empty tables and asked my why I thought they put us in that big room. Idk? So we get our salad and it was good. Kretzers had a decent salad bar. One of the reasons we like the place. I ordered a 12oz ribeye rare with a baked potato. Wife got chicken strips with gravy and mashed potatoes and gravy. When the food arrived everything looked good and the server said some things that I have no idea what. Even the wife didn't know. I go to open the butter for my pita and it's not butter. It's an oil whip. I do not eat fake butter. It's harmful. To find out they have no butter in the place. So I tell my server of the situation and looks at me like he has no idea what to do. Turns and walks away. So I eat my steak and stare at the baked potato. I am a recent cancer survivor and have no ability to make saliva. So I needed the butter to make the potato edible. Or even gravy or something. I told the server but I don't think he heard me correctly or didn't know what to do. It was so loud with the stupid fans. So while I do recommend Kretzers and like their steaks and crab legs and salad bar. I don't recommend their new addition to dine in. And if you want real butter bring your own. I was a little disappointed with our experience this time around.
