Outdoor sports and activities are my favorite thing. I am an avid skier and ski instructor,…read morebackpacker, trail runner, horseback rider and driver, photographer, former raft guide, and aspiring climber and I think this store has the best rewards system in the business. When you make a purchase, you accrue points immediately (10% back unless it's a sale item), which is to say that if you buy a big thing first, the points you earn may cover the cost of the second thing you buy. No waiting until the end of the year, just immediate savings. It really inspires return business, which no doubt is the point. The store is not huge and therefore the selection could be greater for certain things (I'm looking at you, camp stoves), but what is available is well-curated. Also, the staff is friendly and helpful, parking is solid, and the area is serviced by the HOP bus, so it's easy to get to even if you aren't driving. I can't get everything here, but I will get as much as possible.

I really like this little store. Sure, we buy a bulk of our outdoors stuff at a bigger place but…read morethere is a different selection of certain sorts of items here that are always worth checking. I have found many things here, more unique in some way, a different and better color or size for me of something (very often athletic skirts) or a similar but better for me style of something (sunglasses) and other random stuff. They have a nice rewards program too so the prices are always competitive, even when bigger stores may be having a sales event. You earn dollar points and they always remind you when buying something that you have some and ask if you want to use them. I have earned some buying items online occasionally and did not even know I had them until offered at the checkout here. The staff is very relaxed and extremely helpful and friendly. There is a fun atmosphere you can see right at the door with their sidewalk placard that often has jokes or trivia. This is a small place but tightly packed with stock.

Through a series of miscommunications between my husband and myself , we took the long way around…read moreBoulder today to find him some new shoes. Thinking he wanted to replace some leather street shoes we tried two off brand discount places first but to no avail. When finally showed me the condition of his low hikers with open holes and crumpled supportable, I said REI the place where all his back country and trails shoes had been purchased in the last. We know this Boulder store like it was part of our home but in a giant way. With trial and error over the last 20+ years we know Keen fits both of us well and las for many years. We went in and straight to the wall where they have always been and found that they have diversified in this department so much that they had on one style from Keen in a "low hiker" and one in a mid hiker. He has about 3 different weights of "mids" from winter insulated to light summer trail. And there was the solo style in low and they even had his size in stock. He trended them on and said "perfect" and he would wear them home after paying. Of course they were the new model just in for spring and though not on sale we saved many dollars by using our rewards we had available. They tossed his old ones in the trash and will recycle the box too and we walked out the door totally satisfied. Typical scenario at the REI wheee all staff is helpful and knowledgeable too. You may wonder why I was needed for this errand but I had a career in retail management and have many decades in Boulder as a shopper too. Shopping is "not his thing" until it's a necessity or beyond!

First time in Epic Mountain Gear today while visiting CU Boulder. I've been wanting to get a pair…read moreof boots for a while. The sales were great so I sat on the boot bench and Everette came right over to help. He was amazing. He assessed my bare feet, discussed what type of terrain I like to ski, measured my socked feet, discussed the intricacies of my particular foot type and then was completely honest about not having too many options in my size this late in the season. With that he found a boot he did have in my size that might work and worked me through every part of the process for trying to sort out if they were the right fit including trying several different insoles. At the end of the day the price was right but the boot was just a little too stiff at the top, which he agreed with. He never tried to sell me on anything and at then end gave me a road map on his opinion of what I should be looking for. He spent a generous 30 minutes plus with me and I learned more from him than I have in 15 years of visiting ski shops. We did end up purchasing a great Rossi ski jacket for my son but I wish I could have purchased a pair of boots from Everette because his service was truly exceptional. I haven't written a review on Yelp in years, but had to call this place out. Thanks Everette!

They also had a sale (mid-march), which was actually pretty significant. I was in the market for new ski pants, tried on a bunch of options and settled on a pair that was marked down from $250 to $160, not bad. I then had to stop myself from purchasing other cute fleeces and gear that I really didn't need. I had an easy time trying on and checking out. Overall pretty great experience.
