Stopped here for dinner, great decision! The food is absolutely delicious, the Peruvian chicken is seasoned so well and is so tender, the quinoa salad was delicious, the plantains are phenomenal Restaurant is brand new, so it is very clean, the atmosphere is casual and very friendly and welcoming and very well lit. The service was fast, my quarter chicken combo was ready first, we did have to wait about five minutes for the quinoa salad. Plenty of parking with a dedicated parking lot, location of South Main! We will definitely come back!

I really like their cute logo.

There are many businesses packed into this small area, and I'd complain if the newest addition were anything other than Alpaca Chicken! This location is tucked away, set behind the Wendy's and Valvoline. I visited on a Friday around 11:45am and there was one parking space left. I thought it was going to be crowded, but it turns out there just isn't much parking. The outside is very pretty, clean and stands out among the surrounding establishments. There's a lot of outdoor seating. As you go in you'll see a large menu overhead and you order cafeteria style. I got 1/4 dark meat and two sides. My sides were premium - green beans and plantains. My husband got the same but with rice and black beans, which are considered regular sides, no up charge (he's not fancy like me). For two meals with soft drinks it was around $28 and that initially felt pricey, then I think, this is real food. The chicken was absolutely delicious, like nothing I've had anywhere else. Crispy skin, tender meat, a little smokey. The green beans were delicious, perfectly cooked with some garlicky sauce, and the plantains were also some of the best I've ever had. Everything was nice and hot, fresh. The two sauces (green and yellow - that's what they are called) taste house made , with the green having a little kick. The service was very friendly. I imagine this location will do very well. I'm excited to go back and try other items such as the Arroz Chaufa - A Peruvian style stir-fried rice with chicken, sausage, egg and scallions. They have daily specials as well!

Shared portion of 1/4 white meat chicken, sweet plantains, coleslaw. Chicken Tuesday taco special.

We will never eat at Alpaca again, they cook with canola oil which is very inflammatory. They need a healthier choice!!!

Such a great change of flavors from the usual. Lump charcoal lends a taste of smoke to make some juicy chicken.

I was in town for business and as in every location I travel to, I look for Peruvian food. This is in my top three. One was in Austin, TX, one in St Louis, MO and now this one in Durham, NC. I had the lunch special. It included a drink, soup and entree. Of course you have to drink Inca Cola (tastes like Squirt with Cream Soda) nice and cold. I'll have to get a Chicha Morada to take with me (which I did, and it was fruity and sweet, like a non-alcoholic sangria with cinnamon). The soup was a chicken and lentil soup with various veggies. As soon as I tasted it, I knew I was in for a treat and prayed the Aji de Gallina would be just as good. It was! Aji de Gallina is a shredded chicken dish made with Peruvian Aji amarillos, nuts, Parmesan cheese. Add in all the delicious spices Peru is known for and you have a wonderful, homey, delicious dish. I will be coming back tonight for dinner. Can't decide if I want the Seco de Res or the Lomo Saltado. Both staple dishes in Peru. Part 2 - so...I was too tired to go back for dinner. BUT, I did order in. I got the Papa à la Huancaina (so delicious, it tasted like I make at home). It is a creamy, Aji Amarillo cheese sauce over yellow potatoes. I would have liked it a little spicier, but I understand having to cater to the general public, so I'll let that slide. But the flavor was as good as you could get. I also opted to order the Seco since I thought it would travel better than the Lomo Saltado. The rice was perfect. Not soggy or spongy. Just right. Flavored with a little salt and garlic. You could eat it by itself. The Seco meat was tender. I didn't even use a knife to cut it. In fact, it pulled apart easily with a plastic fork. I would have liked a little more of the cilantro sauce to soak up in my rice. The flavors were right on, but I love cilantro...so. It even came with a Salsa Criolla (lightly pickled red onion), which is authentic and served with many Peruvian dishes. I ordered additional salsa amarillo just to taste. It's a sauce made with aji amarillo and black mint. I know it sounds weird but it's actually so tasty and fresh. My only disappointment were the beans not that they weren't good and flavorful, but they were pinto beans. I was really expecting mayacoba beans (similar to a white canary bean). Sorry, I ate it before thinking about taking pictures. All in all, I would rate this highly for those wanting to try authentic Peruvian food. My next visit to Durham I'll be trying the Ceviche and Lomo Saltado.

The sausage and chicken was cooked perfect and there was plenty within the fried rice. The side salad was great and the cilantro dressing they made was perfect with it and the arroz chufa. I stopped in on a Tuesday to introduce a buddy to Alpaca. Since my family's tastes don't really run in this direction, I usually come either on my own or with a friend when I get the chance. I've been visiting this particular location off and on for years. I ordered my usual: ¼ chicken plate Black beans and rice (with the beans over the rice) Plantains Unsweetened iced tea with lemon Total was $15.18 + tax and tip. As always, the food was excellent and the service was as well. No matter which Alpaca location I've visited, though this one is my regular, the experience has been remarkably consistent. They staff generously which allows for excellent service with people who seem to care, and the food is thoughtfully prepared. I also appreciate that this location has expanded; seating used to be a challenge, and now it's a friendly, lively, and comfortable space. While everything on the plate is good, I'll be honest: what I most look forward to every time is the black beans and rice. Even though I grew up eating them, it's surprisingly hard to find black beans with this much depth and flavor. Alpaca does them exceptionally well, and I really appreciate that. I always enjoy my visits here when I get the chance.
