Is it as good as in Peru? Well no...but it's still really good and is definitely the best Peruvian food we have had in NC. Many in my family are from Peru and are very particular about what they call "good" Peruvian food. Even the ceviche was given high marks. That's impressive! To be fair we haven't had everything but what we have had has been very good. Pollo a la brasa for sure if you don't know what to order. read more

I still stand by my initial review. Mami Nora's, you were my first, and I will never forget you. You will always have a place in my heart. Alpaca... you are like the Duke "Cousins" who replaced Bo and Luke, the 2nd Becky on Roseanne. You aren't as good, and I don't really like you. Canastas is so... simple and delicious. I haven't sampled the ceviche or the fried rice, because if I were to do that, I wouldn't be able to have that delicious smoked chicken and them sides. SO MANY sides, and all of them are pretty solid. You can get a pretty clean meal here that doesn't make you feel ashamed, or you can go all out and get neck-deep in mayo-based sauces and some decadent, chicken-fatty cheat-day dishes. Every time I go here, there's like at least 2 families with kids running around and being precocious little brats, but, to be perfectly honest, it kind of coalesces with the Latin music and television programming to create this atmosphere that you don't really get from most places in WF. I have come to appreciate this place very much -- and I recommend that you give this a try instead of choking down another one of those rotisserie chickens from the grocery store or paying for the privilege of getting ripped off at Alpaca. Nothing personal with Alpaca... but I think I'm dead-on with that Dukes of Hazzard season with the cousins comparison. read more

We LOVE Peruvian chicken and wanted to try this place out. The chicken is super tasty, I loved the fried rice as it had egg and chicken in it. The green and yellow sauce is good too! All our food was good. My kids were not a fan of the corn. Staff were patient and friendly as we placed our order. The restaurant is clean which is always a plus. Parking could be hard to get to as it's in the surrounding parking lots of the grocery store. read more

Heard from a lot of locals that this was the joint for blackened chicken. Stopped in the other day and ordered the 1/2 chicken with two servings of rice and beans. Everything was wildly delicious, tender, & flavorful. And I have to agree...this is the joint for the best blackened chicken in wake Forest. Full stop. read more

Canastas Chicken is located in the Gateway Commons Shopping Center in Wake Forest. It is in a section near Heritage Lake Road. I had not heard of Canastas Chicken before driving by the location one day and deciding to stop after work. The parking area was busy with the dental office next door. It is a Peruvian restaurant and has rotisserie chicken, shrimp, beef, pork, and lamb. For sides, there are many rice dishes, fried yuka, plantains, french fries, red potatoes, salad, green beans, mixed vegetables and coleslaw. When you enter, you notice the colorful walls and tables. You can dine in or place an order to go. I used the kiosk to order takeout. I ordered the Camarones al Grill, aka grilled shrimp. It came with two sides, and I did the house salad and fried rice. The portion was large as I got a lot of rice and ten shrimp so I wasn't able to eat it all. The restaurant seemed understaffed at first, with just one person fulfilling the orders. Then a group came out from the back, and it seemed like there was not enough room for them all. I am sure in time they will figure out a better way to fulfill orders, maybe with an assembly line with one doing the meats and another working on the sides. I will give it another try in a few weeks and see if there are any improvements, and try some of the other dishes on the menu. read more

Great new edition to the Wake Forest food scene. Canastas is a Peruvian charcoal-broiled spot. They offer a sizable menu with the standards (chicken) and a number of authentic Peruvian specialties (beef heart). The place is brand new so everything is shiny, bright and clean. There are about 10 tables to eat in, with table service. You have the option to order at a kiosk near the door or at the counter. Food is excellent. The whole chicken is sizeable, and served cut into pieces. It features delectably spiced crispy skin and most juicy meat. Sides delicious as well. Long-simmered black beans, sticky white rice. Seasoned dirty rice. Sticky sweet plantains. Also tried a skewer of beef heart. This is a Peruvian specialty and a favorite. The meat is cut into thin slices and marinated, then skewered and char broiled. It's very lean, a little bit chewy perfectly spiced and excellent. Almost a gamey taste but very very good. Service is still a work in progress, but they get some grace because I visited on the 2nd day open. And it was VERY busy - people are anxious to give it a try! I'm sure as things settle in, service will speed up as well. Food is delicious. Give this place a try. read more

I was in North Carolina visiting my dad and, after having more barbecue than I could handle, I was ready for something different. That's when I came across Canastas Chicken and decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised to see lamb chops on the menu at such a reasonable price--$24 is a great deal compared to the $40 I'm used to paying in Maryland. I ordered the lamb chop meal, which came with four chops over a bed of rice, along with string beans and red potatoes. The guy who took my order greeted me with a smile, and the restaurant itself was clean and welcoming. They even have kiosks available if you prefer to place your own order. The lamb chops are cooked to order, so everything came out fresh and hot. The meal was flavorful overall, though I think it could have used just a touch more salt. Still, it was a satisfying dish. Next time I'm in North Carolina, I'll definitely be back to try more items. Hopefully they offer a takeout menu. I'd love to share this spot with my Family neighbors. read more

Canastas Chicken - Lamb chops (I ate one before I remembered to take a picture) - Peruvian Near Me - Wake Forest, North Carolina

Canastas Chicken is definitely the new kids on the block, offering an extensive menu of traditional and exotic Peruvian delicacies. Think an upmarket Alpaca with a more adventurous menu!! So the most recognized Peruvian dish known in the States is probably Pollo al a Brasa, or rotisserie chicken. To that end, theirs was delicious!! Sadly, their sauces left something to be desired...Verde, Amarillo, and Rocoto are all mayonnaise based, and boy can you taste it!! The rocoto was the only one with even a hint of heat. But the main flavor profile was mayo, which left a lot to be desired. That being said, their chicken and the sides were tasty. And they have some pretty wild stuff on the menu, like beef heart. So I'll definitely be back for the culinary adventure. And I look forward to updating my review and expect I'll eventually be giving the 5-star salute!!! Staff was friendly and helpful. And the decor is a vibrant tribute to all things Peru. They're definitely worth your time. Give them a try. Thank me later... read more

Canastas Chicken - Anticucho de pollo // two grilled chicken thighs with a side of green beans and green rice with black beans - Peruvian Near Me - Wake Forest, North Carolina

A newly opened location nearby at heritage. Sounded a lot like a similar small local chain we had in S FL that highlighted roast chicken. We've had take out a couple times and have found it fresh tasting, real food, not processed. They cut the chicken a bit weird so it's not exactly a clean cut of thigh or breast. But it works out ok. One time I ordered an extra white piece and it was questionable that I actually got it so deducted a star. Otherwise it's been decent. Can be quite slow to fill orders. Even preordering online for pickup, I had to wait a good 15 min. Guessing they'll improve efficiency as they gain experience. read more

We tried this new restaurant which is a nice addition to those restaurants close to home. Honestly I prefer Alpaca but it's a close second. I need to come back and try it again. I like the colorful vibe and service was just ok. It was a little plane tasting for me. I prefer more flavors. read more

Good chicken well-seasoned not dried out. Black beans were a little too watery for my taste. Effectively it's another alpaca competitor in the area. Their sauces are okay but I think I prefer alpacas green sauce. read more

I had the cilantro chicken with red skinned, potatoes, and fried plantains. My wife had the ANTICUCHO DE POLLO with black beans and fried rice. The food was excellent. This was the best Peruvian food we have had. We will most definitely be back! Dine in service was good. It did take a little longer than I expected. The food was well worth the wait. We happened order at a slow time. It did seem like when we were finishing our meal the dinner rush came and there seemed to be plenty of people to serve customers. read more

Canastas Chicken - Grilled Cilantro chicken with red potatoes and fried plantains. - Peruvian Near Me - Wake Forest, North Carolina

I have been anxiously waiting for about 6 months for the opening of this restaurant so when I friend of mine told it was now open I dropped everything and came to Check it out!!! As a Peruvian I felt the duty to come and taste the food . I decided to try today the Lomo Saltado, a typical Peruvian dish. There are some other nearby restaurants like Alpaca that can make this dish so I wanted to compare. They totally nailed the flavor! And the sauces that they brought (yellow and green) they were amazing. They feel really fresh and with Super good flavor. The chicha morada drink was also the best I've had in a while. Service was good considering it is the first day it's open. Ever nice and clean. I am very excited to see a Peruvian restaurant that has a decent list of Peruvian dishes.... Finally Alpaca has decent competitor in the area !!! I need to try the other dishes but for now comparing the lomo Saltado I can say Canastas 1 - Alpaca 0. . So grateful for this Christmas present ! . I'll be back. read more

I got there weekly. I love the food. I try to order 1/2 chicken all dark. 2 thighs 2 legs. Not a big order. I go at lunch time or dinner. You'd figure they would have lots of chicken available. Unfortunately they tell me they cannot fill the order. This has happened multiple times. So I leave and go to alpaca instead and they never have an issue with 1/2 chicken all dark. It's a little further away. The food is comparable but I'd prefer to go to the store 2 minutes from my house. I see on door dash you can choose dark or white when ordering 1/2 a chicken. I do not want my food delivered or pay more for delivery. I am not sure why this order is so difficult that it cannot be fulfilled. Btw the folks are not too nice about it either. All I want is 2 thighs 2 legs. Fairly simple order. Cmon do better conastas read more

Tried their 1/4 chicken, and honestly, it could've been way more flavorful. The chicken was just missing that extra seasoning and flavor I was looking for. If I had to choose, Alpaca is definitely better. read more

This place is always busy, the food is great and also fast service. I have been looking for Papa a la huancaína and is the only place I was able to find it. read more

This place was superb! The portions and flavors were great! We ordered a 'Papa a la huancaina' to start. The sauce was on target, just wished it was slightly thicker but definitely loved the flavor. It happens to be my favorite. I tried the quarter chicken with two sides. I picked the fries and coleslaw. Those portions were for 2-3 people. The chicken was delicious. I loved the cumin flavor against the charred skin. Yum! We also ordered 'Lomo saltado' dish. So so so good. Again the portion was large. Probably could have shared this with 2-3 people as well. The staff was very helpful and checking in with us to see how the meal was. I loved the environment. Chairs were so comfortable. We will definitely be back to try more items. I highly recommend. read more

Steak Bowl very good. Had green rice and black beans. Very flavorful. One bowl good for 2 people

Had stopped in the area to run errands and saw the restaurant. Since it was close to dinner time, decided to get a whole chicken and four sides to take home. The place just opened, but didn't really have any issues. Chicken was seasoned and cooked well, sides were good (green beans were just ok), and the portions were good. Highlight was the green sauce. It's been a little while since I have been to Alpaca, but I definitely thought the taste was better here and the chickens were larger. Will definitely come back. read more
