We have visited various shrimp trucks throughout Oahu, but Aloha Shrimp in Hauula (at 53-534 Kamehameha Hwy) is by far the best we've tried. Their Garlic Shrimp (#1) was freshly prepared, and came with rice topped by the garlic sauce, corn, and a pineapple slice. The shrimp was large and not overcooked, and was incredibly delicious with lots of buttered garlic sauce. Each shrimp popped with flavor! The shells were so flavorful too that you simply feel compelled to suck off all the sauce. No shell was spared. After our meal here, we drove up the coast to explore Kahuku Farms and to later try the shrimp at Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck (separate review). There was simply no comparison with Aloha Shrimp! After our extremely disappointing shrimp, we simply had to return to Aloha Shrimp for a second round. This time we ordered both the Spicy Garlic Lemon Shrimp (#5) and the Garlic Shrimp. The Spicy Garlic Lemon Shrimp was so good we wished we had ordered more or had tried other variations. The two women working the truck were very friendly and hospitable, and we felt that they really appreciated our patronage and our compliments. This food truck is definitely worth the drive from Waikiki where we were staying for the week. Mom and pop shop along the coast of the north shore not too far from Kualoa Ranch. It's a small blue bus on the left side of the road going North on Kamehameha Hwy. so don't drive too fast or you'll miss it. The #1 Garlic Shrimp plate was very savory and garlicky comes with canned corn and slice of pineapple. About 7-8 pieces of shrimp comes with it. would've liked more shrimp for the price but it's very tasty. The lemon iced tea was fresh and refreshing. You have a view of the water which is right across the street with a small chapel. North Shore garlic shrimp. It's the perfect Hawaiian linner. Except for the peeling part; I don't love that part, and would love to see these shrimp trucks offer a peeled option. It's got perfect island appeal. It's coastal, it's flavorful, it's not too heavy, not too hot. It's outdoors. It's casual easy breezy fun. I love everything about these shrimp trucks! Aloha Shrimp is a great option that doesn't come with a crazy line. I did find "the other shrimp truck" to overall be more flavorful, better prepared, have better quality shrimp. But this assessment is based on one experience and certainly not totally conclusive. Note: Our respective GPS's went a little crazy, and once we passed it, neither of the GPSs could figure out where we were and got us a bit turned around. When you're driving through the Oahu North Coast, there is pretty much millions of shrimp rice plate options and it's hard to choose. Note: if you pass Pat's at Punalu'u, you've gone too far. Aloha Shrimp is in Hau'ula, across from St. Joachim Church... On the left side of Kamehameha Highway. There's free parking in the unpaved lot behind the blue truck. Service is quick and efficient. This place is better than the "popular" shrimp truck in Kahuku because there's no long line, it's about a dollar less for a plate, and it's not as far from town! However, there still are flies buzzing around... And the feral chickens kept me alert... Well, it's pure outdoor dining in the tropics, so, it's a bit humid and it might be warm if the trade winds aren't around. I was ready with my gloves, so, I peeled the shells easily. The shells are cut down the back for convenience! The fresh green salad was crisp and the sweet pineapple slice was a nice touch! I was starving, so the shrimps were yummy to me. However, Sue said that the "popular one" is more flavorful because of the amount of garlic - and garlic chips on the top. A hidden little gem off the side of the road on the north shore. It was raining and I was craving a shrimp truck, so I went with my fellow Yelper's reviews and landed on Aloha Shrimp. Cash only. The shrimp was packed with loads of garlic, all cooked and cleaned very well and flavoring the two mounds of rice they sat on. It was served with pineapple and corn. The hubby got the chicken katsu, which was all white meat, fried crisp and delicious. We ended up moving to our car due to the flies buzzing around, but you are in Hawaii and have to deal with the tropical elements. Ambiance: don't drive by too fast come otherwise, you might miss the truck! The truck is located, obviously outdoors next to some smaller shops on the eastern part of the island. We decided to stop by on our way back from kalua Ranch as a snack. Not sure if it's cause we were there around 3pm but there was no line so we got our order quickly! It's a family run business so happy we stopped by. Food: so I know it's common knowledge that there are a lot of shrimp trucks on the island, however, amongst the three or four, that I've tried (including Giovanni shrimp truck) I think this one takes the hat. The shrimp are decent sized, but the marinade for our spicy garlic, lemon shrimp was impeccable, with a great blend of garlic and kick. The lemon also helps subdue the fishyness (though our shrimp smelled perfectly fine). Also loved the texture of the shrimp, as it had a slight crunch to it. I know a lot of the garlic shrimps sometimes are doused in seasoning/sauce that make them really wet and soggy. The meal comes with some pieces of fruit and corn, because I think they recently changed from salad to corn, which is not too big of a deal. Service: straightforward food truck service. Overall I give it 4 stars because the exterior of the food truck does not look great at all. In fact, it was almost enough to make us not eat there. This plate of food was everything I had dreamed for and more. Before this, I had never had a proper plate of garlic shrimp from Hawaii and now I can say I truly lived. The shrimp were absolutely coated in the spicy garlic lemon sauce and the way that they were cooked, you can tell it was in the sauce instead of tossed afterwards. The shrimp themselves were juicy and perfect, not dried out. The sauce was so good that we ended up making sure that we soaked every last drop with the rice. Had it not been for our appetites and more shrimp stops, I would've absolutely gotten a couple more plates - possibly just for myself.
