She has so much experience with color that I am able to just sit down, give her a vague idea of what I'm looking for, and she does the rest. It always looks amazing and her prices are beyond reasonable. The salon itself has a great vibe and always keeps familiar faces providing a great sense of consistency. All of the assistants are super friendly and always smiling. Most have wound up getting their own chair and clientele. As a sidenote and Bumble & Bumble junkie, the products at Allen James are never marked up past the original price. I've been coming here for over a decade and would not consider anywhere else! My stylist is very professional and reasonable and soooo talented! And the salon is clean and nice. During Covid they have been awesome with extra cleaning and spacing between stations. It's never crowded which is also nice. As for masks, I'm personally over it -- the governor doesn't even wear one when he says we all should. ;-) The topic has become so political and I love that this salon has stayed out of the debate and allowed patrons to handle the issue personally and do as they feel most comfortable and appropriate. read more

I had never colored my hair in the past (I've had naturally black hair) , I decided to be bold and go to a new look after 26 yrs of only black. Red was my new look color. I was extremely nervous (almost chickened out to do it at all ) but Crystal made the whole experience very comfortable and made me feel I could trust her to do a great job. She was very thorough explaining the process (great for someone who has not dye there hair or is ,like me, scared to go to a new color without ruining your hair) and overall gave me the boost to go for it. She took her time and answer all my questions as we went through the process. When she was done ... I was in complete AWE!!! I had never felt so CONFIDENT,BEAUTIFUL, and was IN LOVE with my new look. I would avoid this place if you are looking for an establishment where they are covid compliant. There is no required masks and so most patrons and workers are unmasked. No distancing either of work stations or partitions. Truly a shame when hair and nail salons are the most populated and infectious. I left after coming to my appointment where I verified with the stylist beforehand that everyone woukd be masked. I was told "of course everyone is wearing masks". That is untrue. When I got there the stylist told me that they can't force anyone to wear a mask. Im sorry of course you can have rules just like restaurants have signs no shoes, no shirt, no service. So I left and gave my money to a salon that cares and is enforcing masks for the safety of their employees and patrons. For God's sake its a freaking mask get over it. read more

I pulled up a few photo's on my phone of what I wanted, I also explained to her exactly what I wanted and she knew just exactly what to do. If you are looking for beautiful, sun kissed surfer girl highlights then look no further plus $125.00 for full highlights is more than reasonable. I've been flipping around trying to find a colorist to stick with & I think I'm going to stick with Diana. She's gives me exactly what I want & her prices more than fair. She's also a sweet girl who donates her time to give haircuts to the homeless. Two weeks ago I needed a salon visit. For years now, I have had terrible experiences with stylists until I found a decent one about 3 1/2 months ago- not someone from Allen James. What I've noticed is a decline in skill everywhere, even among stylists who've been licensed for decades. The stylist I found back in October, at another salon, understood my simple request- clean up my inverted bob, which is lengthening, without compromising the length I've achieved, so that by the next visit I can have a mid-length layered bob. I've been to salons I'll never return to because of all the stylists that hear that, see the pictures I bring, then proceed to hack my hair to a length shorter than the last time I got it cut, and not evenly. Maui at Allen James was no exception. I found Allen James when my preferred stylist couldn't fit me in. I had called many *organic* salons, often seeing posted hours that contradict answering services. Allen James appeared to be open. I even drove there to see if they could take me later in the day or the next day... or the next next day. Their doors were open, but I was reluctantly greeted by a perplexed stylist who said they were open but should have had the doors locked. Weird. She was kind enough to meet me outside to discuss scheduling. I was absolutely willing to take whatever they had but to also keep looking. She didn't have to try to find anyone, but she did, and I'm grateful. So why the one star review? I've thought about it for two weeks... Maui called me to say she could schedule me later that day. She didn't say until I was in her chair that night that she doesn't work Mondays, but she made it sound like she had nothing better to do, so all was well. If this review was about her character instead of her skill, I'd give 3 stars- less than 5 for her trying to guilt me for how far she traveled to get black dye and for working a Monday. We were chatty, which I don't mind a bit. But I knew it would be bad as soon as she rubbed scant amounts of petroleum jelly around my hairline, then smashed her applicator against my scalp for a very long time. The time she spent *smashing* her applicator at my scalp is longer than I take to apply my own dye- which I always do neatly. It took almost a week to scrub dye off my forehead and ears every time I showered. That never happens when I dye my own hair. As little as a week later, my gray was showing where the "black" dye was already going light (brown). She cut my hair shorter than it was when I got it cut 3 1/2 months ago- she took me backwards by at least half a year. When I dye my own hair, I wash after it sits about 20-30 minutes, and I get great gray coverage- without having my head baked for 40 minutes. When she "washed" the dye out, I got squirted in the eyes and ears, which previous worst stylists have never put me through. After cutting, she offered to straighten my curls so she could check for evenness. I've had lots of stylists do this, so I trusted it. I used to straighten my curls when they were very long, and NEVER heard so much singeing as two weeks ago. I now have several sections of hair that will never curl again. Ever. I've been unemployed for a year and living a type of hardship most unemployed people will never experience. I cannot easily do anything nice for myself, and must do my best to be ready to impress at any given moment. Now I have a fried mop that will take a very long time to grow out, and I paid a lot for this fried mop. It hurts deeply. It's really difficult to believe I wasn't made a fool of for needing a service and being willing to pay dearly, and tipping well. I also find it strange that I made it clear that I sought only organic treatment, but to Maui that meant organic dye and that she could use Redken products on me as she wished. Don't advertise organic services if they're only met half way. read more

Pleaseeee do not, I said do not get your hair done with Diana De-Vigny. I can to Diana for a Balayage and she destroyed my hair. Totally destroyed. My hair was super nice I just wanted to get some more bright and shine on the ends but she mess it up so so much that my hair is full of orange spots from the roots down. I came back 1 week after so she could do something to improve . OMG she had the ability to make it worst!!! I was going to Italy the next day and I had no time to go somewhere else !!!! I send her pictures on that same day and she just ignored me. Don't let her do your hair!!!! read more

Unlike other manicurists, Christine is a perfectionist. She does not make mistakes and will always follow the directions that you give her. Her area is always clean, so much nicer than other places. It truly is a spa experience. Most importantly, Christine is the nicest person around, I never feel uncomfortable around her at all. I have had some mean people do my nails before, so having someone who actually cares about the customers is extremely refreshing. Shannan at Allen James Salon is the most talented colorist you'll ever meet. She has been coloring my hair for about 10 years now and every time I leave the salon I look fabulous. I continue looking fabulous until I get back because she colors hair in a way that it grows out looking natural. I have actually had strangers stop me just to tell me they love my hair color. Just got a wonderful haircut from Shannan B.! I brought in some pictures of roughly what I wanted, and Shannan was able to translate them into something that works beautifully with my hair and face shape. She also went through and took a lot of weight out of my hair (my hair may be thin, but there's a LOT of it), which always makes for much faster drying and styling once I get home. Shannan's assistant (I'm so sorry, I don't remember her name) was also very sweet, and did a great job flat ironing my hair. Overall, I've gone to more expensive salons, and they haven't been nearly as good to me as Shannan and the folks at Allen James were. I will definitely be back in the near future, maybe even for some color next time! Disappointed. I've never been here and looked up a few places on YELP! And decided to give this place a try. Disappointed. ( I've waited weeks to write this review because I want it to be fair.) The inside if the salon is ok but needs a sleek new remodeled look ASAP. The vibe is sad and not energetic even with young people working there. For years I only let Deana Dankha at Vogue salon in Newport touch my hair but I cheated. My bad and now I'm paying for it. All I had was a hair cut. I asked for no more than an inch and a half to be taken off and that's what the stylist did. She asked if I wanted my bangs cut and she cut then to the length I asked for. The stylist was not friendly and didn't smile but I think that's her natural state so no big deal, I don't care as long as I love my hair BUT I don't. She did not texturize at all, like nothing-nada. I made sure I mentioned that my hair is thick and bulky so she would realize a little texturizing is necessary even if I want my hair to grow out. Everyday that I blow dry and try to style my hair I am reminded how disappointed I am with my hair cut. Worst part? I paid $55 + $15 tip. I DO NOT recommend this salon. read more

I stopped going to Christine because I couldn't deal with always having to stop to get cash because she wouldn't take a card. I am seeing my manicurist for my pedicures and I didn't realize the damage that has been caused by Christine. I thought Christine was helping me by getting those pesky ingrown toe nails, but in reality.....she was stripping my nail beds and causing more damage. My current manicurist is trying to repair the damage and its extremely painful. I work at a hospital so I have to wear closed toed shoes, and its unbearable at times.
