I just ordered delivery from Ali Baba restaurant. I have eaten there once before, and the falafels were amazing. I usually go to whole foods for my hummus, but theirs is by far better, so I ordered delivery to have some in my fridge. They gave me an entire packet of pita, and the falafels didn't disappoint. My wife and I go to a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants, and this is by far the best we've been to. The vegetarian grand combo was amazing in every detail. The staff were all very pleasant, too. One poster here has commented that the tables seemed like an afterthought in a take-out business, but I did not feel that at all... the decor, atmosphere, and spacing of tables all added to the experience. Awful. The whole restaurant was smoky with a burning oil smell. The lamb curry "stew" was more like a soup; everything was in a brown broth not a sauce. Corn in lamb curry? Disgusting. We just order chicken tika masala and side of falafel. We are greatly disappointed. I see why we don't come back here often and why the restaurant was empty. The owners need to wake up and realize they need to change. Our chicken was dry, bland and covered up with tons of dry chili pepper. The falafel was ok but small. There is six small sizes of falafel the size of a dime. Couldn't they spare the normal size for the price we paid. I wished I could remember not to return here. This place left me hungry because the food was not edible. I couldn't even eat the rice. It was hard and seasoned with tons of dry chili pepper too. This place is doomed. The worst restaurant I ever went to! The lady at the counter (i don't know if she is the owner, waitress, or the hostess) was so rude. When I confronted her about her attitude, she told me she was mad at the cook. REALLY LADY??!!! You have internal issues and you treat your paying customers like garbage?? We got hummus (which was lacking any type of flavor) and left, I'm a big Middle Eastern food fan....I'll stick to Maumouns down the street which has awesome service and great food! My boyfriend and I came to Ali Babas last night in search of something different to our usual Italian places of choice. Being originally from England, where middle eastern food is not only extremely popular, but as authentic as you can get (unless you're in the actual country eating it!) I had pretty high expectations. Safe to say this place was outstanding. The food was delicious, fresh and full of the amazing middle eastern flavours you'd expect. The value for money was excellent, especially for Hoboken. We sampled a few of the specialities and enjoyed every single one. The stuffed grape leaves were second to none. The place is also BYO which is another huge plus if you're looking for a cheaper way to dine out. Our server, Miguel, made our experience unforgettable, he was so attentive and we loved talking to him, he was a natural. I have lived in Hoboken for 15 years and Ali Baba is still one of my favorite spots to eat. The food is awesome and it is a nice quiet place to hang out and talk with friends. My favorite is the mixed platter with Lamb, Chicken and Beef. The Hummus and Pea soup are outstanding. For the price, the quality is a steal. I will continue to come back for more. read more

I've been to a lot of Hoboken "mediterranean" places, but I've always been put off by how unfresh the ingredients are, and also the ambience (just another "middleastern takeout"). We came in here today and we've been customers for 21 years today was the first time that we got crappy service and overcharge I want to say the main reason for this was because the owner was not there. We went into the restaurant and the big lady was there. She had a nasty look on her face as always. The workers on the kitchen were very slow with getting our food. The one young man, I want to say he was the owners son was dressed in jeans and a third shirt was chilling and drinking beer when an untrained waiter was taking our order. Going back to the food, everyone we went there we order falafel sandwiches and the pita bread comes warm. Today they were cold when we called the waiter and waitress over they started to argue with us saying they ate always served cold. She finally offered to heat up the sandwiches as she was walking towards the kitchen made a smart remark to the other waiter. Also she was giving attitude and rolling her eyes at the kitchen staff. Another thing about the food was that as an appetizer they give warm pita breads on the side with butter and hot sauce. Today they have it to everyone else but our table. When we asked for it she added a hummus appetizer to our bill. The service was very bad today and if the owner was there none of these things would be tolerated. Lastly when the waiter came to give us ur bill he added an extra dollar to our bill. The hummus appetizer was 7 dollars on the menu but he wrote 8 dollars. This was the first time in 21 years I have seen this type of service. I can't wait to see the owner and tell him about my experience because he knows me personally. read more

My husband and I went with several friends to Ali Baba for dinner, for the first time. We love Middle Eastern food and like to try Middle Eastern restaurants wherever we happen to find them. We have noticed that each restaurant has its own unique style of making the Middle Eastern standards. Ali Baba incorporates a lot of fresh herbs and lemon flavor into several of the dishes we tried. The hummus had a very smooth consistency with a bright lemon flavor and a background of warm spices. The baba ganoush was very flavorful - the smoky eggplant, fresh garlic, and fresh lemon flavors were each apparent, but in good balance. Large chunks of eggplant shreds were plentiful and the dish was served fresh and warm. I preferred this to the typical baba ganoush which has a smooth consistency and is served chilled - I felt like I was eating a hardy side dish rather than an appetizer. The humus and baba ganoush were served with a basket of pita. These were standard commercial pita, but were enhanced with char marks from the grill. The Mediterranean Salad was served with a a simple oil-and-vinegar based dressing, which was best suited for this dish, since it allowed the flavors of the abundant fresh chopped herbs to dominate. The herbs gave the salad a very fresh and refreshing appeal. The falafel were prepared nicely with a dark crunchy crust and a moist herb-and-spice flavored interior. The accompanying tahini had a pourable consistency which made for easy dipping, and the flavor was mild which was appropriate since the falafel flavors were subtle. The spinach pie was quite different from its Greek counterpart, with which I am familiar. Rather than phyllo, the filling was wrapped in dough. It was reminiscent of a calzone, but the dough was much softer than a pizza crust, yet retained a nice chew. The amount of filling was modest, but the abundant leftover dough was ideal for dipping into hummus and baba ganoush. We had a main dish of vegetable stew with couscous. The stew consisted of pumpkin, zucchini, mushroom, and a few other vegetables. It had a tomato sauce base with a mild background of warm spices. The couscous incorporated an abundance of fresh herbs. The two paired nicely. We tasted a variety of desserts. The desserts were either phyllo based (such as baklava) or cake based (moist thin cakes baked on a cookie sheet). The cakes had the consistency of macaroon, and presumably included ground almonds. There were many varieties of both the phyllo and cake desserts - they all had a homemade quality and were sweetened with a not-overpowering honey-based syrup. We also enjoyed the homemade mint and strawberry lemonade. We certainly had an excellent meal, and would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys Middle Eastern food, and to those who appreciate the subtle differences between the cooking styles and ingredient choices of different Middle Eastern restaurants. read more
