10 years since my initial review and Ibby's is still the best in the city for a quick, unpretentious, delicious Middle Eastern meal. They've added quite a few combos over the past few years but the basic platter remains my favorite. I always swap out tahini for tzatziki. And a dollop of their garlic butter on the rice adds to the flavor. Kunefes from Ibby's still remain a hot favorite. As does the rice pudding. My last review was going for a pretentious literary vibe so I won't outclass it right now. The hummus and hot sauce remain first-rate. It seems this 90s-vintage spot has added more combos over the years; tonight I enjoyed the Jordan Combo. Edit: I'm erasing the "This review is currently than most" tab by reviewing the reviews. Whether to trust the 1-star critiques is ultimately up to the American people but I've enjoyed Ibby's since my 90s era as a low-ranking political hack (cue up Gin Blossoms and Everclear for my bittersweet nostalgic flashback) and in recent times have had multiple in-person and delivery orders and always liked everything. The service is fine. As some of you know I'm not shy about mentioning surly service. No, they're not going to say "How was your day as a software-as-a-service consultant? That hat really accentuates your cheekbones." And for the price complainers, I'm curious where your lower-cost options are found if they aren't dollar pizza. I'm in no position to agree or disagree with the allegation that the fries are subpar as I haven't ordered fries in my nearly three decades of Ibby's awareness so I will suggest skipping them in favor of the known quantities. read more

Ibby's has been around in Jersey City long before most of the high rises were built in and around Grove St. Famous for their falafels, I ordered a falafel & hummus sandwich to enjoy for a quick lunch. Honestly a sandwich is more than plenty here. At around $7.50 or so, you also can't go wrong. I've never eaten inside the restaurant, as it's relatively small and packed. However, I do frequently do carry out. The service is top notch and they always have everything freshly packed for me when I come to pick it up. I also go with the lamb shawarma platter. The lamb is cooked and seasoned so well! Paid $35 (all in) for delivery of a chicken shawarma platter with falafel. The packaging was terrible. All 5 dishes in one take-out container. It arrived a jumbled lukewarm mess. Half of the hummus ended up at the bottom of the plastic bag. Olive oil was squirted over the top of some dish so the salad was literally wilted lettuce with oil, 2 olive and; 3 small pieces of tomato. Falafel had seen better days. The pita was even stale. Wtf. The coup de gras: while incredibly tender, the chicken was very bland. Total waste of money. I don't know the cost for takeout but my recommendation is don't bother. My friend recommended the falafel sandwiches from Ibby's, and after trying one today I understand why. I especially loved their hot sauce. I have a pretty high spice tolerance and this sauce was actually spicy and super flavorful. Service was really quick, and the staff were nice. The food is good in general. Don't offer normal halal things like hot sauce or garlic sauce. You have to ask. Been going for a couple years and generally like it. Had a bad experience tonight where the cook in the back came out and was weirdly very rude. Seriously, not sure why at all. Seems like he wanted to be more involved with front of house (young guy) and was very rude for no reason. Not sure why they allowed that. Hopefully that guy doesn't try to interfere with customers in the future. Clearly didn't have the requisite people skills to be talking to customers. read more

I have been eating at Ibby's for over 15 years and lately they have completely fallen off. I don't know if they have been sold or what but the food is now terrible and the prices are way up. The pita is the worst quality that I have ever seen anywhere. Every sandwich falls apart in pieces because the pita is so bad and when eaten on the side with a platter it tastes like a piece of paper! I can't see how pita this bad is even made and how a restaurant owner would then buy it and serve it to customers? The once great shawarma platters are now largely made of way too much flavorless rice, wilted iceberg lettuce with a few olives in water, a few pickels and tzatziki that tastes like water with a little oil and salt. It's a shame because Ibby's was great for many years but sadly it is now in the past tense. read more

came here on a lazy sunday afternoon with my BF. he spoke highly about the shawafel (shawarma + falafel) and i had to get to the bottom of this lol. we both got the shawafel with lamb, side of stuffed grape leaves, and some extra hot sauce. ordering was easy and we got our food in 5 minutes tops. now, the food. falafel was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. lamb shawarma was tasty and had the right amount of fat to keep it juicy and tender. for someone who doesn't really love lamb because of its gaminess, it wasn't too gamey to me. veggies (tomato, lettuce, onion) were fresh and crisp. and the pita did a good job holding everything together! this is also my first time trying stuffed grape leaves, it tasted fine to me but i'm just not a fan of briney things. the bf loved it tho. oh, and the hot sauce? it was HOT. portion-wise, we felt it was really good for the price and it's a quick, healthy alternative to fast food. service was pretty good too, this is coming from both of us who have worked in hospitality lol. this will be in our JC rotation for sure. read more

Oh, Ibby! I love your food. My go to is definitely the chicken over rice, but I'm also a huge fan of the falafels here. You can preorder and pick up, which we often do for lunch. They're good with making sure customizations are followed correctly, and being that we usually order for 5+ people at a time, that's highly appreciated. I love the rice, love the meats, and loveee the sauces. This is def a take out joint; not the place you come to for a sit down dinner. I find them to be priced higher than most middle eastern spots, but so worth it. They never disappoint. If you're in the area, definitely try them out. Not sure how they're not at 5 stars! read more

For todays review, @ibbys_falafel_jc was such a cute "hole in the wall" restaurant that had a variety of affordable and delicious options to satisfy the palette. I was so craving a chicken pita sandwich. The taste was out of this world and the price point was great as well. The falafel pita was also super yummy. We ended up purchasing some grape leaves to go, which we paired later with an after cap glass of red wine. The service is brusque and never friendly, not even a hello or thank you after five visits. The platters have some good items, but are pricey for the portions. I got the Damascus platter a few times and the baba ghanoush was good, hummus was fine, felafel really good but tiny, and the salad was basically shredded lettuce with few toppings and no flavor, a waste of half of the space in the styrofoam to go container. Pitas were cold and hard. Grape leaves as an extra side were fine. For the prices, I expect larger portions and maybe some type of welcome/thanks. My husband and I are a huge fan of Ibbys, in fact it's on our weekly lunch rotation every week, until now. This evening, during a walk with my toddler he fell on the uneven sidewalk right in front of Ibbys. He was crying and his mouth was bleeding. In panic, I walked into Ibbys to buy a bottle of water. I asked the gentleman at the register for a room temperature bottle of water that was sitting on the floor. He said it's not for sale. So then I asked for the cold water bottle from the fridge. Just as I was about to pay for it, he said no credit card and I didn't have any cash. I do understand most places won't take a CC for a dollar purchase but my child was bleeding and crying. Small Mediterranean place for a quick bite close to exchange place. I've been here twice and the food is mediocre but it's great for a quick bite that's fairly priced. I've ordered a falafel once and a platter once and I would recommend the platter. You can choose what you want for the platter ranging from 2 to 4 of 5 items. Great falafel sandwiches. I have been coming here for over 20 years . The menu is simple arab street food . I have tried various items over the years and was disappointed. Gyros , Kabobs actually suck don't order them. The falafel is great and the only item on the menu I now order. Always ask for hot sauce on the side , it is potent and they always put to much on the sandwich. A whole falafel and a can of coke is under $6.50 which is a value .
