Baba Ganoush, Pita Bread, and The Arab Spring

How do you begin to start a Review for probably the most delicious Mediterranean food I've had in the tri-state area. I would like to say in New York City, but this restaurant is located in Hoboken. It's walking distance from the pier. If I walking distance you enjoy 20 minute uphill walks and through college campuses (Stevens U). I loved walking to this place because it helped us feel better about the amount of food that we ordered when we arrived. The service was something to rave about. We had a young girl whose name I'm forgetting now but who was really knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations as to what we should order. As our picture show we ordered the 40 thieves grill mix, the fresh squeezed mint lemonade, and the Arab spring. We ended with Turkish coffee which completed the meal in a beautiful way. Every single item that we ordered was so flavorful and so yummy. Would 100% go back to this establishment!

For the past two years I have been coming here all the time, at least once a week. Here's the full breakdown of my experience: 1. Service The owner will make you feel at home, very jovial and showcasing the classic middle-eastern hospitality I love. And not just with me, I see it ALL the time with everyone who comes in. You have questions about the menu? You have some concerns? Want to talk about the weather? Expect nothing less than a smile and nice conversation. 2. Food I only eat halal so I love coming in here to eat. Not only is the food yummy, but it is also very consistently yummy and you can always count on a satisfying meal. Personally, I'm a sucker for the entrées, which are VERY filling with the rice and salad. I've had just about every one now and always end up with a clean plate. Even the ones I did not have, like some of the lamb, I have had friends try and give great reviews. The sandwiches are also great, especially if you are looking for a smaller meal. I have also ordered some catering for large events, to which Ali Baba went above and beyond in providing every possible thing to make the catering superb. Overall, especially with the lack of Arabic inspired and halal food in Hoboken, Ali Baba has been like a second home to me. I always love speaking with the owner, and when I'm not, I know that he is in the back cooking up great meals. Highly highly highly recommend trying Ali Baba if you are in Hoboken!!!

We've been to Ali Baba a few time different times over the years and the food always hits just right! The serving sizes are massive! My husband and I can easily share an appetizer and entree, but an entree each is too much! The staff is so sweet and kind! I prefer sitting outside versus inside. The outdoor area is adorable but the inside is pretty dark and not as appealing. Hoping for more warm weather to sit outside again!

Awesome spot for casual Mediterranean food! Very large portion sizes and great value, all conveniently located in Hoboken We shared the 40 thieves mixed grill which was mort than enough for two people. The meats were perfectly cooked and deliciously flavored! We also had salad, rice and pita with dips which were all great! Service is friendly and quick. Definitely recommend for a casual date night or night out with friends. This spot would also probably be perfect for take out!

After looking for an acceptable gyro place, my husband and I decided to try this place. We ordered delivery over the phone, but maybe next time would order online as we had to be handed off to another person who could take our order. Food was excellent. We shared the halloumi cheese starter and then enjoyed our beef gyro. Very delicious. Might try dining in next time.

The meze plates were nice, cool and refreshing. The lamb with thick and juicy. They're open later in the evening which is a plus when you're wandering Hoboken starving and looking for some tasty grub that ISN'T bar food!

Really wish I took photos - therefore just like the great convos with the wonderful, extremely personable and educational counter gentlemen - will be coming back real soon with photos Review: Hudson Kebab House isn't just good--it's memorable. I had the gyro wrap, my wife had the chickpea salad with falafel, and both dishes were so on point they brought me right back to my time in Istanbul. Flavorful, fresh, and clearly made with care. The wrap was balanced, not greasy, and the falafel had that perfect crisp-to-fluff ratio. But what really stood out? The person behind the counter. Not sure if he's the owner or just part of a family-run operation, but his energy was magnetic. He checked in with us--and with everyone who came through the door--like we were all regulars. Friendly without being overbearing, helpful without the upsell. He made the food taste even better, if that's possible. This spot has soul. It's the kind of place you return to not just because the food is excellent (it is), but because it feels good to be there. I'll be back very soon to try the kebabs, and when I do, expect a full deep dive--possibly with pictures, definitely with passion. 15/10 - must try. Strong BUY, erm, sry, not investing.. STRONGLY RECOMMEND

(Dined 09/17/2026 TH @ 6:00pm): Oui oui to this North African cuisine restaurant!…read more In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and things to do throughout Jersey City (specifically the Heights) and by extension nearby Hoboken, my dear friend made dinner reservations at a place she wanted to try for a while... Barbès Restaurant. An eatery that featured French Moroccan cuisine (which I couldn't recall ever having), I was game for this. The original concept opened in Manhattan in 2003 by French owner Omar Balouma and Moroccan owner Abdellah Ksiyer, but sadly shuttered nearly 15 years later due to the building being sold. Both former Hoboken residents, they decided to open their current location in 2018, and have since expanded within Hoboken into sister restaurants La Boheme and Cafe Tati, respectively. The name came from a vibrant district in Paris at the foot of the Sacré-Cœur known as a "little North Africa," that reflected a blend of French and North African immigrant traditions, music, and food. Did we have any barb comments about this restaurant!? PURCHASE(S) Cosmo Martini Cocktail ($15.00): A wonderful classic tart elixir to get my dinner plans started - santé! C'est Frais Cocktail ($17.00): A refreshing citrusy sweet drink great on a hot day! Rock 'n Moroccan Cocktail ($17.00): Basically a Moscow Mule, it was fine. Dirty Gin Martini Cocktail ($15.00): Dirtier the better! French Martini Cocktail ($15.00): Fruity sweetness to the max! 2020 Chateau Rieussec Dessert Wine ($15.00): Lip-licking and smacking goodness! Calmars Grillés Hors d'oeuvres ($16.00): Small squid rings in a dry zesty sauce, these were enjoyably chewy and tender. Bronzini Grille w/Mashed Potatoes Entrée ($36.00): Two delicately tender grilled pieces of fish in a fragrant light lemon sauce on a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes - c'est magnifique! Steak Au Poivre Entrée ($39.00): Seasoned tender meat layered with a creamy peppercorn sauce with nicely-steamed brussels sprouts and sauteed mushrooms - outstanding! Pastilla Au Lait Dessert ($14.00): It had potential, but the roasted phylo was hard to crack and eventually the crème fraiche made it soggy. Creme Brûlée ($14.00): Always a favorite, it was always about the crackling caramelized sugar top. Credit Card Fee 3.00% ($5.91): C'est la vie... SERVICE We made 6:30pm reservations, but I arrived early, so I headed to the bar where a young male bartender warmly greeted me and took the time to craft my first cocktail before my friend showed up. When my friend arrived, a young woman showed us to our table, and from that point on she was awesome, chatted with us, and gave us room to enjoy our evening. Our food started to arrive about ten minutes later in perfect intervals, and eventually the payment process was a breeze - excellente! PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance): This was a moot point since it was minutes away from Louise And Jerry's Tavern (or, slightly flat-to-downhill leisurely walk 40-minute distance from my friend's place). No parking lots in sight, there seemed to be plenty of spots along the main drag of Park Ave. and all surrounding side streets - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A one-floor elongated layout with exposed brick walls where some whimsical framed pictures hung, a quaint bar to the right once you entered, plenty of booths and tables inside while there was an outdoor covered patio. A decent amount of natural lighting filtered through the front glass door and various windows while large hanging electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs while an eclectic mix of music played in the background. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Barbès Restaurant was génial, and I would love to return to try some of the more Moroccan dishes. Yes, this place was a tad pricey, but the food was phenomenal, the cocktails exquisite, and the service exceptional. The food menu was just right, I wished they had more beers on tap, especially from local breweries, and apparently they offered a happy hour but had no idea what it was. Plus, I always preferred to support small mom & pop businesses. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $216.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 5.0 STARS

The broth is amazing. I loved every bite of that. Then we got the pastilla and tajine d'agneau. The pastilla is delectable. A must. It's some of the wildest flavor combinations I've ever experienced. You're eating shredded chicken mixed with cinnamon and white powdered sugar. All within phyllo dough. The tajine is fun to try, but it was just OK. It's kind of like a lamb stew. I will give kudos to a very soft and not too chewy Lamb. The prunes and apricots are such a unique flavor duo with these. Couscous is fun. This meal was a 4 for me but everything else, divine. The music was fun. They a live guitarist and sax player serenaded us. Dim lighting. Such a prime location. Lovely to walk through this neighborhood after you're stuffed.

The cherry soda was presented beautifully and had a tasty flavor, but there was way too much syrup. It was very sweet. The plate comes simply with rice, a small dish of cucumber tomato salad, your protein and a lime wedge. You also get hummus or a piece of baklava. I chose the hummus that came in a very small ramekin. When I order a mix grill or Persian food, the plate usually looks a little more exciting and robust. This seemed paired down. I could have used a charred onion or a pickled vegetable. The cucumber tomato salad was good, the chicken was moist and the beef was tender. The rice was a little disappointing. The hummus tasted a bland, like it needed more tahini, garlic, salt and lemon. I know I was one of the last people in for lunch, maybe my timing was a bit off. Not the Mediterranean café experience I was expecting…read more.. I had an interesting experience at Chickpea Grill because I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when I walked in. The restaurant is presented as Mediterranean, and I was specifically interested in trying it as a local Mediterranean option. I started with something simple, coffee and a cookie, and unfortunately neither one worked for me. I'd give the food/drink experience about 1/5. The coffee didn't taste like what I expect from a proper coffee shop; to me, it tasted more like coffee from a commercial machine. The cookie/ pastry wasn't particularly good either. I also tried a chicken taco since it was a free taco giveaway that day. I rate it a 2.5. The prices are definitely affordable, so I can't complain about the cost. But for me, inexpensive isn't enough if I'm not enjoying what I'm eating or drinking. There was also some uncomfortable energy during my visit involving the staff, which made the overall atmosphere less enjoyable. I don't want to overstate that because it was one visit and everyone's interactions can be different, but it definitely contributed to my overall impression. The interior also wasn't what I had envisioned from the concept. Unfortunately, this just wasn't for me. I wouldn't return, although I can see how the affordable pricing and broad menu could appeal to other people. My verdict: Affordable, but the food, coffee and overall experience didn't meet my expectations.
