Even though I had been to Seattle several times over the past few years, it was my first time visiting Paine Field (PAE), and as seamless as my experience was at the Snohomish County airport, I wish I could say the same about the Alaska Airlines flight I took there.
Things started off well as dropping my checked bag off at PAE was quite seamless. I checked in at the kiosk, which gave me a luggage tag for my checked bag. After attaching the luggage tag to my bag, I went over to the Bag Drop where Wilson was there to check my ID and collect my bag, wishing me a good day in the process. Wilson had a super friendly demeanor that perked me up even when I was half-asleep, so kudos to Wilson for his work ethic!
I had an early morning flight on a Sunday that was scheduled to land in Orange County, CA later that morning. I figured if all went well, I could be home in time for lunch.
Well, everything was going well until one of the PAE gate agents made an announcement that the flight was undergoing some maintenance, and we'd get our next update around the time we were supposed to board the plane. To make matters worse, it was also raining pretty hard that morning, and we were scheduled to fly out of Gate 2B at PAE, which meant we'd have to go outside to board the plane.
About 10 minutes after the first announcement regarding maintenance, the gate agent made another announcement that our flight's gate got changed from 2B to 2A, which meant we'd be able to use the jet bridge to board the plane, quite the serendipitous silver lining given that they only had a limited number of umbrellas for passengers to borrow.
But those maintenance issues lingered by the quarter of the hour. And I say that because the departure time kept getting pushed to the right every 15 minutes, which got kind of annoying because every 15 minutes, I thought we'd be getting closer to boarding. Nope! In fact, the inaccurate departure time would stand pat that even if we had started the boarding process at that point in time, there's no way the flight could leave by then.
We started boarding just less than an hour after our initially scheduled departure time, but the boarding process was quite slow for a smaller flight that we were on. There was nobody sitting next to me, and I kept thinking they were waiting for that passenger to board the plane.
There was a flight to Palm Springs that was scheduled to take off shortly from Gate 2B, and I saw passengers going outside to board that plane. I was even starting to fear that plane would take off first because we were told the maintenance issues hadn't been fully resolved yet. The crew mentioned that the reason for the delay was because of an issue with the water tank, which even though it wouldn't prevent the plane from flying, a failure to address this issue would have necessitated additional paperwork that they were trying to avoid. It was the first flight of the day, so the overnight maintenance crew must not have done their job in a timely manner to ensure that the plane would take off on time.
After all this mess, we finally took off after a 90-minute delay, and our delay caused a delay for the Palm Springs flight as well since that plane needed to wait for our plane to take off first. Hopefully these delays didn't cascade into the later flights that day.
I enjoyed the flight itself, mostly in part due to not having a neighbor right next to me. There were no middle seats on our flight, so as much as I wanted to lie down and nap during the flight, I wouldn't have been able to do so comfortably. Maybe a small child could, but I was too tall for that lol.
The flight attendants on our flight were Susan and Oscar. They did a good job of doing what they could do to make us passengers feel comfortable during the flight. Before we took off, I witnessed Susan making good conversation with the passengers in front of me, even talking about their upcoming excursion to Disneyland.
Complimentary refreshments are served mid-flight, and it's the usual, but tasty, Biscoff cookies with a beverage of the passenger's choice; I chose coffee. If you choose coffee, the flight attendant will ask if you'd like cream and/or sugar. I personally choose cream, but no sugar; consequently, I get two packets of creamers, which the wrappers indicate are made from cow's milk.
The flight finally landed in Orange County, but in the afternoon. And we still had to wait because a couple planes that landed before us were still on the taxiway, waiting for the signal from air traffic control to park at their assigned gates. We had to wait another 20 or so minutes before we were finally let off the airplane. By the time I got home as well as lunch, I had much less time to unpack and get ready for work the next day. read more
