I have no complaints about the electrical work performed but their office system is a mess. Much to my surprise I received an invoice over a year after the work was performed. The invoice included the permit fee for the work, which was never performed. In the end, we got the work inspected and they gave me a $49 discount but not worth the trouble. read more

Needed them to evaluate some old knob and tube. Scheduling was difficult - I'd prefer not doing things via text but that seems to be their primary means of communication. My place was inspected (310$) but then after not hearing anything about the quote and reaching out it turned out they lost their notes on our job. The guy who came out for the inspection was friendly and seemed very competent though. They are probably good for most jobs, but we ended up going with another company who gave me a better idea of what to expect when we talked in person. The other company asked me to remove the insulation prior to the inspection - Alameda did not and I think they would have been able to give more info if they had. However, because they only communicated by text I didn't know about this beforehand. read more

Initial visit was crazy expensive $500 with a $200 national coupon that can be used for any project. The advice given was ridiculous. It was to incase the knob & tubing (dangerous) rather than removing before insulating. The weatherization/insulation company gave better options & names for reputable electric company which included rebates. The final bid for work (not including the incasing portion) was $1200 higher than other removal options. I wouldn't recommend this company. read more

Oh my gosh, I don't know where to start with my praise for these folks; the way Matt came by within a couple days of my first phone call? The way he helped come up with the most efficient and cost-effective solution to our problems? The bid that was half as much as others? The fact that they were able to start work a month after submitting a bid? That they had the parts on hand with no supply chain hold-ups? That Nate and Katie were the nicest folks to have working in our home? That they always gave us a heads up re: what they would be doing next and when they'd be here? We had a huge job- total replacement of our service and relocation of the meters. Lots could have gone wrong, but nothing did. And it's unheard of these days to have a contractor show up and to get on their schedule right away. For once, I think we got more than what we paid for. Unequivocal 100% thumbs up!! Mixed experiences with Alameda. First experience was great. We just moved into a new house and wanted someone to walk through with us and give us an idea of which items from the inspection actually needed to be fixed and which we could put off or fix if we wanted to, but weren't necessary. They responded quickly, scheduled quickly, and were thorough. It went great. The next experience however... We smelled burning coming from our main panel and had Alameda come out to figure out what was going on. The electrician found that a few of our breakers had failed, so he replaced them. In investigating the cause of their failure, he noted some rust inside of our panel and ultimately determined that water was leaking into our meter panel outside the house, then following the wires down into our main panel in our basement. The fix for this would have been to replace the meter panel (and move it, according to PGE). Alameda quoted us ~$8k. This was pretty bad news; a fairly significant chunk of change for a very unsexy project, and I don't know jack about electrical systems, so I got a second opinion. 3 of them, actually. I didn't tell them about Alameda's suggestion at first, I just laid out our situation. Each one of them, upon eventually hearing what Alameda had suggested, went completely slack jawed. The resounding, unified opinion from all of them amounted to "There is absolutely no way that moving or replacing your meter panel is even remotely necessary." One of them even showed me that the whole basis for why Alameda suggested the meter alteration in the first place made zero sense, since the wires that water was purportedly traveling down to get into our main panel actually directed upwards before eventually heading down to the basement. Another one noted that Alameda's suggestion was so unnecessary and off-base, that it was difficult for him to see it as anything other than a company intentionally trying to take advantage of us. So, I'm sure they'd be a fine company to go with if you just need some minor work done, like having some outlets changed out. The basics of my experience with them were good. Service and support, scheduling, payment system were all easy. But... they suggested that I get some pretty high-cost work done that 3 other electricians independently told me would have been a complete waste of money. It's pretty hard to trust them after that experience. read more

I contacted Alameda Electric via Nextdoor along with four others here on Yelp. They were by far the most recommended in our neighborhood on nextdoor. I soon found out why. Not only were they the first to respond (just a few hours) they were the only ones that had the right answer - one that didn't cost a dime. First off, it could have been dangerous, but the other electricians gave me, at best, "here's our price list, schedule something on our website." one didn't even respond. Instead of milking it for an easy call, Alameda recommended calling PGE to check the connection outside the house. PGE sent someone within hours (voltage drops, flickering, etc on independent circuits can indicate a fire hazard.) Sure enough, the connections were the temporary variety available to electricians, not the permanent ones PGE is supposed to put up shortly after the work is done. Apparently, over ten years ago, someone dropped the ball, and now the temporary connection was failing. so, by expedience and wisdom (if not craftsmanship,) alameda electric saved the day! read more

Came to help us troubleshoot a treadmill that kept tripping our breaker. This was our second quote and both companies had said it would require extensive drywall work or a pipe outside due to the location of our treadmill. Even with the extensive drywall work, they were more thorough with explaining what type of work was involved (beams, fire protection, etc.) After walking through and analyzing the treadmill and breaker, Alameda came up with a second hypothesis (and ultimate solution) regarding our over-sensitive breaker, ultimately saving us a ton of money and work. I had Alameda out to do some work at my home in Gresham, and am happy with their results. They seem to be a real busy company, though to be honest all of the residential electricians I called seemed equally busy this last summer/fall, so I took their appointment time and went with it. David, the owner, came out and did a walkthrough of my new (old) house and all the work I wanted done, and took care of one or two small things free of charge while he was there real quick. For the big stuff, which included cutting holes and running new cables to install some recessed lighting, he got me an estimate. Fast forward to when the work was scheduled. Unfortunately the guy who was scheduled to do the work was injured, so they had to delay a bit. And then Portland had Snowpocalypse, which pushed us back a bit further. I would have been a bit frusterated and tempted to go down to 2 or 3 stars, but they did a solid job of communicating with me. The folks did the work over 2 days, and did a great job. My lights look great, and all the other punch list items got taken care of as well. I got a phone call after the work was done just to follow up and make sure I was happy, which was a nice touch. They sent me an invoice that was my original estimate. All in all, I decided I'm happy with them as an electrician even with the few delays we suffered (it happens), and I'd use them again for sure. While I found the business responsive and my tech was on time and polite I wasn't impressed with the amount of work done for the fee. The bare minimum, getting my kitchen switches, was done, but the person who came wasn't feeling well so was reluctant to do what I feel should have been done. I had a question about the light voltage, and rather then testing it he blamed it on a bad batch of light bulbs. Out of the five items I had on my list only one was done. I understand that people get sick, and I appreciate that someone still came out. I got a quote for the second item on my list and it was $400. I was surprised at the cost. I'm an avid DIY so have some idea on the scale of projects. I think a five star visit could have completed the wiring trouble shooting and done the second project within 2-2.5 hours for the $250 site visit. At the very least I was hoping that a sick tech was sent out on the first visit to be considered in the second bid. Service and responsiveness, but lacking on the value. read more

A circuit in our house stopped working. Alameda was the only electrician that could come sooner than 3 weeks out. They were here less than 24 hours after our problem started. The guys who came were friendly and professional. They tried the cheapest fix first, but it ended up being a fried wire. They showed us the problem so we could actually see what they were charging us for. They also gave us info about electric wiring, what dimming lights mean vs. flickering, and how to use some electric tools. They didn't try to sell us anything we didn't need. When they were done, they helped us move our window AC unit to a window with a better outlet! And then they cleaned everything up. The customer service was top notch, and our power is working again. Great business to work with! When my wall oven went out, the appliance repairman noticed some unusual wiring coming out of the wall behind the oven and figured that was the problem. I sent an email to Alameda Electric and they got back to me in ten minutes (!) to set up an appointment. I was very impressed with their electrician, Paul, who quickly assessed the current wiring as being very irresponsibly done (probably by the previous homeowner). He quickly installed the proper electrical boxes, explaining to me what he was doing and why. He did an excellent job all around! Assumed I needed a 220v outlet installed for my new electric car (EV). These folks responded quickly, and after examining photos of my electrical panel and meter box, invested considerable time assessing the extent of work needed, permitting, etc --and found a way to squeeze me into their tight schedule. Then I got a call from the owner, Dave, himself an EV devotee. He gently guided me through the process of deciding that the nearby standard household 110v outlet would serve my needs just fine, because I don't drive much. These people seem motivated by providing a service, rather than maximizing profit. Even though they're a pretty large shop, they feel like a mom-and-pop outfit, willing to spend whatever time is needed to figure out what's best for the customer. Both Dave and his job estimator, Aaron, gave me their direct phone numbers and invited me to call for help anytime, even if it was just for advice about my EV, and had nothing to do with an electrical job. When my power was restored after a mass outage I found I had three tripped breakers that wouldn't reset, leaving me without lights in much of the house. I emailed Alameda Electric, not expecting a quick response since this was 6pm on a Friday night and I imagined they'd be swamped with calls already due to the widespread outages. Amazingly, David called me within 30 minutes and helped me troubleshoot the problem over the phone. He recommended that I try replacing my self-installed Z-Wave light switches since a surge when the power was restored may have caused them to develop a short. He said he'd be happy to come out and do the work, but if I was comfortable doing it myself I could save some money. He was absolutely right. I replaced the switches myself and now I'm back in business. I was super impressed with how quickly David called me and how generous he was with his time and expertise, even though it meant talking me out of paying him. Well things started out promising... I called to set up an appointment for a major electrical job for my home (~$10,000). He said they could come out in about 10 days for the estimate. I told the person that I spoke with right away "Great, however, I don't want to waste either one of our time so can you tell me how far out you are if I decide to hire you you?". He said "about 2-3 weeks". So I set up the appointment, the guy came out and seemed friendly and like he understood what I needed, yet I noticed that unlike all other contractors that I've talked with that he didn't take notes. I repeated again that I'd like to get this started as soon as possible if I like the bid. He said "no problem" and that he would have a quote to me early the following week. This was a Friday. I waited till Tuesday and I called the office and left a message I finally talked with someone on Wednesday am who had no idea that they were even bidding on the job. She said she would need to call me back. Thursday am and no call so I called again and she said that the guy that came out was still working on the bid. This told me right away that the entire process had gotten lost in their system. Then she told me they were 5-6 weeks out. Obviously they lost the bid. More importantly here, I want folks to know that they may be good at what they do, yet communication and project management, if its important to you, are not their strong suit. read more
