Wonderful work. I hired Steele to install a light fixture in the foyer at my parent's house (they live in Portland). The ceiling height there is 18' so that was the tricky part. During our kitchen remodel we needed to relocate and rewire several switches and outlets so we needed an electrician. Our carpenter suggested that we reach out to Steele Electric and they were great. I contacted them via their main phone number, followed up by providing pictures and more info via email so they knew what we needed. I was provided with a rough estimate and a scheduled date for the work. I received a reminder/ confirmation call a day before the schedule work & the electrician arrived as communicated the next day. As the work progressed there were surprises and the electrician kept me informed and provided options. One of the things that my carpenter pointed out is that though the electrician had to drill several holes in the drywall, he did so in a clean manner he retained the drywall pieces that were opened up which simplified the drywall repair afterwards. We did have one issue that came up after the drywall repair and I had to reach out to Steele Electric for support. They promptly sent out an electrician to address the issue & covered the trip charge as warranty work as I expected without issue. Things happen. You can tell the values of a company or person for that matter by how they react. As a consumer I want a company that stands with me to figure these things out. There are so many options these days that a company to truly be successful need to not only deliver on their core values but communicate status and definitely when things happen. The other indicator is the employee, what do they do? Say? Or not say? Anyone can get annoyed it's an east emotional response but to take a deep breath and help when you may not want to, that is priceless. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a company here. They communicated with when things happened and helped fix it. In the end I got great customer service and an excellent product at a fair price. They truly place the customer first. My experience with Steele Electric is unique but I believe worth mentioning. I was traveling on the BH HWY and my car stopped working in the middle of a very busy intersection. I had four kids in the car with me and felt very overwhelmed. While trying to get thru to roadside assistance as people are honking incessantly at me, I get a knock on my window. The man asked if I needed gas. I wasn't sure what was wrong with my car but he offered to go around the block and come back to help me. Within 10 minutes he had filled my tank and that started my car so that I could safely get my crew to the nearest service station. He said to me, "I hope your day gets better." I asked him for his card and he is an employee of Steele Electric. I cannot thank this man enough for the selfless act of caring about another human's struggle. I would highly recommend Steele Electric. We ad an issue with our electric panel that required the replacement of the entire box and new wiring from the heat pump to the garage where the box was. From the first call with Kandice who was very polite, who scheduled Aaron to come out and give an estimate. Both were very professional and provided all the information necessary for us to make an informed decision in replacing the electrical box and wiring within our budget. We were surprised at how soon we get it scheduled which was great because we were having the heat pump replaced and needed new wiring and electrical panel. Casey came out and did an outstanding job with the wiring, replacing the box and clean up. He completed the entire job with no breaks in the time he had promised. The electricity was turned off for only 3 hours as he had promised. This was during the bad heat wave so it was great to be able to have a portable air conditioner going while Casey finished up his work. We would high recommend this company as the employees were again professional, pleasant and knowledgeable. read more

Avoid working with Steele Electric at all costs! Their total lack of professionalism has cost us time, money and caused a whole lot of avoidable stress. Long review ahead, but the nightmare situation they landed us in justifies it, and will hopefully save others from making the same mistakes. The short story: After bidding a large job for our newly purchased home (knob and tube replacement, new panel, new outlets and fixtures), Steele Electric showed up to work, looked around for about 20 minutes, then told me they were quitting because they "didn't have time" and there was "a lot of knob and tube." That's right, the exact job we hired them to do! Thanks to Steele Electric, we can't move into the house for at least another month and a half (the wait time for a new electrician to start) and we're going to exceed the 30 days the insurance company gave us to complete electrical upgrades after closing - still waiting to hear if we'll be subject to penalties. We'd already ended the lease on our apartment (we did give ourselves a little flex time in case the job went long, but we never imagined this scenario), so we're now paying rent at a temporary apartment, paying for a storage unit and paying a mortgage at the same time. All because they "didn't have time" for a job they signed up for. Plus we now have the headache of moving twice. I should mention that the previous week, when they were supposed to start working, I took the morning off work to meet them at 7 am at the new house. Not only did they not show up, no one called to tell me they weren't coming. I had to wait for their office to open at 8 am to call and be told that they had been on their way, but an emergency had come up. They weren't apologetic about not calling to let me know, and worse, when I asked when they'd be starting, I was told they couldn't work until the following Friday, more than a week later! Hmm, must have been some emergency to occupy them for over a week. There were some other red flags along the way; read on and avoid our mistakes... The slightly longer story: Steele was recommended to us by our home inspector and we decided to hire them for the work based on their reviews and willingness to do extensive knob and tube work, which other electricians I spoke to weren't as keen on. I had sent Ryan at Steele our detailed inspection report to give him an idea of the scope of work and explained that in addition to replacing knob and tube wiring we also wanted to add new hard wired fixtures and outlets. He priced the work st $16k and said within that budget we should be able to get "whatever we wanted" in terms of new fixtures and outlets. I asked if someone could come out to walk through the house so I could explain in more detail what I wanted and he declined. He said they'd done this sort of job before within that budget, and we could figure out details on site. That should have been a big red flag for us, but we proceeded out of a desire to get the work done. Next red flag: the lack of a contract. Despite setting a budget, Ryan told me they couldn't be sure exactly what they were dealing with until they started work, and when dealing with knob and tube the unexpected comes up. So they preferred to invoice me at the end of the job, while promising to keep me up to date on changes that would significantly impact the budget, rather than have a contract with specific line items and have to constantly come to me with changes. We went along with the no contract arrangement and we'll never make that mistake again. All we have in writing from them is a bid, so we have no financial recourse now that they've left us hanging and cost us a whole bunch of money. Lastly, the two guys who came out to work on the house were nice enough, but it was obvious from the beginning that very little had been communicated to them about the job. After walking through the house with me, they told me the $16k budget and 3-4 days they had was only enough to replace the old wiring, and wouldn't include any new fixtures or outlets. Uhh, what!? Then they looked at the panel in the basement and said since it was newer and not a fire risk, I might not need to replace it, freeing up some of the budget. I've since been told by multiple electricians, after one glance at the panel, that it's dangerously wired and done without a permit. When they were telling me they were quitting, one of the reasons they gave was that nothing in the house was grounded, which was clearly noted in the inspection report Ryan supposedly read and, like I mentioned above, that there was just too much knob and tube. The inspection report (and several conversations) had made that clear, too. When I said "this is why I wanted someone to walk through the house a month ago," the best they could say is "I think Ryan realizes that now," and "he's new at this." They referred us to another electrician who, as it turns out, doesn't even do knob and tube work. Avoid Steele Electric like the plague! read more

We recently bought a home, and were referred to Steele Electric by a trusted friend for some minor remodeling (installing recessed lights, moving outlets, etc). A team came out shortly after our call (Jason?) and did an amazing job. They were clean, climbed through our crawl space so we didn't have to repair any drywall, and got the entire job done under our budget. We just remodeled our kitchen and Steele Electric did the work as they had been hired by our general contractor. They installed new can lights in the ceiling, 3 pendant lights over the island and 2 sconces. They also ran wiring through the crawlspace to add an outlet to the island. Blake was very knowledgeable and offered helpful suggestions since I'd never been through a remodel before. He helped to replace the can lights in the ceiling room (at minimal charge) because the vaulted ceilings are so high, we can't reach them. While they were here, we decided to buy new ceiling lights for the front entry and hallway, lights for the front of the house and garage and motion sensor lights for the back. They did all of the work at a very reasonable price, were punctual and courteous. The lighting in the kitchen is stunning! We are starting our next project--a new fence with stone columns and electric lanterns on top of each column. We are getting a bid from Steele and plan to use them again.
