This detailed raving review is courtesy of my Mother-in-law. She had such an amazing customer experience with GKA Lighting that she emailed me about it!! Nothing like a family run business for over the top service! Here it is, no edits... I called GKA Lighting in Milwaukie, OR and talked to JR, proprietor. He said he could probably fix my brass lamp switch while I waited. Indeed, it took him about 10 minutes, tops. A very interesting man with a degree in architecture, JR does antique & period lighting, restoration and repair, custom light fixture design and manufacturing.. His business has all kinds of lamp shades, oddities and antique lamps. A great resource. FIVE STARS ! Diane Nealey Portland. Oregon read more

I had 3 cool vintage lamps that needed sprucing up. JR said they could repair them, so I asked if they could do it within a tight timeframe, as we were planning a housewarming party in 2 weeks. He said he would try ... and sure enuf he came through!! Yay!! They look great and work great, and I'm so happy we had cool lighting for our party! Will recommend GKA Lighting to anyone who asks! read more

Good price and quality retrofit of vintage lamp. I will return here every time for the great work they do.... won't find better.

They were quick, and easy, and cheap repair for my lamps. They were very nice and the store had a lot of vintage lighting that was cool.

We had a one-of-a-kind artist designed torchiere floor lamp. The original socket and switch was burned out, it was def an interesting item. JR problem-solved, rewired the whole thing, replaced the switches for the decorative neon and dimmable up-directed flood, changed the socket, new cord and plug... for $60! I was prepared to spend twice that much. I think he appreciates challenges. read more

I brought in our 1900s bronze piano lamp to repair its pull-chain on a Friday afternoon. Had no expectation that it'd be done while-I-waited (but it was), and I even got info about the possible manufacturer of said lamp (Bradley & Hubbard or Handel). We got the lamp from Goodwill back in the early 1970s and everything (but the pull-chain) was in good working order. The owner even replaced the plug! He charged me $10, but I gave him $20. Walking into his shop is like stepping back in time: nice old brick building a few blocks off McLoughlin, full of old lamps for sale and lots of old lamp parts. No wonder this place gets 5-star reviews (and this is another one). Thanks! read more

The owner of GKA Lighting (which is on River Road in Milwaukie) was amazing! I had an old set of lamps that I tried to fix myself but hit a dead end. He not only fixed them on the spot, but he showed me how close I was (pretty durn close!) to completing the fix myself. $40 & 20 minutes later I was on my way with two working lamps! Very personable & friendly too! Very highly recommend! read more

They have repaired several lamps for me. They are my go to shop for lamp and light fixture repair. They also renovate historic fixtures!

My lamp needed a new switch. The owner of GKA Lighting replaced it on the spot. He was very pleasant and informative, and is clearly an expert on lamp wiring. I almost want my other lamps to go bad, just so I can return to this great shop! read more

Highly recommend GKA Lighting for lamp repair. Repaired two quirky antique floor lamps while I waited, very reasonably priced. Located on River Road, Jennings Lodge area. One of those old time businesses that disappear all too often these days. read more

Very reasonably priced repair of our light from the 70s that had bad wiring. He's clearly an expert, and knew exactly what to do to fix it, and got it done well ahead of schedule. Located in a neat old building, to boot! read more

JR at GKA diagnosed the problem over the phone, and instructed me to fix it myself! That is service! I will be sharing this story w/friends and neighbors. Thanks JR! read more

JR was a gem. Fixed the floor lamp that I had inherited from my mother right there. Approachable, knowledgeable and affordable.

I've brought two lamps to GKA Lighting for repair and had great service each time. One repair took a week or so but the other was done in less than 5 minutes while I waited. Highly recommended! read more

Back in my the day when this shop was located in SE, I brought in my grandpa's 1920s era floor lamp that I inherited for restoration. I spoke with the owner who walked me through the process. He took great interest in restoring this floor lamp. I could tell from our conversation that he knew his way around vintage lighting. Needless to say, he did a magnificent job. Last week, a tiny grommet broke that holds a screw that helps hold the lamp shade in place broke off. I found GKA at their new spot in Milwaukie. I explained my dilemma to the owner and he told me how to repair it...and replaced the grommet for free. I'd called GKA a long while ago (it's a good 30 minutes drive from our neck of the woods), and they weren't sure they could help get the "sunrise alarm" part of our lamp working again. As we drove down, I joked -- I hope it's an easy fix and it's free! Well...wish granted! I took a look around at the cool vintage light bulb posters while the first man tried to make sense of our lamp. He thought it was fine, and that the bulb was the problem. This was strange, because we'd already tried replacing the bulb. But he'd had the experience of customers going through four new bulbs with no success and assuming it was the lamp -- but all the bulbs were bad! Another man arrived, and he came to the same conclusion. It was great to have them test all the parts and really get clear on what was wrong and what was fine. He even remembered a random bag of 12 volt bulbs (apparently uncommon, but what our lamp needed) that was floating around the store, and they were able to dig it out to test the lamp. Ta da! It worked! A little too dim (wattage-wise), but it was great to see we just needed a new bulb. They sent us home with that bulb for free, just to have something that worked. The second man also suggested checking 1000bulbs.com for the 12 volt bulbs, and I was able to find replacements (that I hope will work) for a great price -- much better than the $19.95/bulb we'd paid originally! Thank you thank you! We will be rising and shining soon. read more

Super friendly and helpful. I was trying to rewire some lamps myself and found that I had the incorrect parts. Not only did they help me figure out what I needed, they also gave me custom instructions to finish the job. They also have some really neat light fixtures for sale, particularly for older homes. read more

I found this business as the result of a search in Yelp and I've never received better service. The man who helped me was amazing (and I wish I knew his name so I could give him full credit; I took it for granted that he was the owner because of the quality of his service but I don't really know). Anyway, my story is that I prefer antique lamps. However, because of their age or the way they were manufactured, they're sometimes frail or odd in some way. It comes with the territory but it can be hard to find someone who can put them back into reliable service after they've started to fail. I've taken lamps to this shop on two separate occasions and both times the man who helped me simply heard me out, addressed the issue immediately, and charged me so little it was a shock. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. I've truly never experienced anything like it. read more

So happy to find business that still fixes thing! My almost 2 dog who has never chewed on furniture before, chewed up on/off foot button on my one of a kind Kichler floor lamp. Living on WA side it's assumed have to go to PDX so next Q's are how long and how much. First place I called said few days since have to order part and $50+. Second place I called was GKA, who also requested EM pics. Owner JR quickly e-mailed back he had the part so probably could fix while I waited. Candidly it took as long to wrestle 6 foot lamp in back seat as it did for him to fix AND $ very reasonable. In fact I told him charge more since we need GKA to stay in business! read more

I'd give this place 10 stars. It is exceptional in every regard. The owner and employee are excellent. Previously, I'd taken a European standing lamp to Naomi's shop in Lake Oswego. They charged $40 and the lamp only worked for 2 days after service. GKA Lighting immediately found the problem, ordered the part and fixed the lamp for $30. GKA was courteous, efficient and friendly. This is a great company. read more

I brought my great grandmas lamp to them to rewire. it was in a sad state and the top portion an even got a little wonky from being moved around in my parents garage for years. i took it into the shop, they told me a price and gave me a time of 4 weeks. It was around 2 weeks in reality and my lamp is awesome!! i am so happy they were able to get it up and running. its been 30+ years since all the lights worked. esp the one in the base of the lamp. i am so excited to move and use it. they were 100% professional and worth the price. i will be using them again for sure. In fact my parents have another lamp that was from another grandparent that needs repair and they will take it to GKA to fix. read more

The owner is very knowledgeable, fair and generous person. He had repaired my floor lamp in less than 5 mins. I would definitely recommend this business. read more

If you ever need a lamp or fixture rewired, this is the place! Over the years, I have had several fixture rewired by these guys. Their service has always been friendly, their lead times reasonable, and their prices fair. Its also comforting to know that they are a U.L. approved lighting shop. when I've been in their work space , I have seen them working on everything from the simplest table lamp to re-creating huge historic fixtures for government buildings and hotel lobbies! Of the light wiring businesses in Portland, GKA is, by far, my favorite! read more
