PDX Electric installed my car charger. Came back out because it wasn't working, found no problem. Months later, after intermittent problems, I finally noted a blackened wire in the junction box they installed. Sure enough, they'd not tightened down a connection properly. They came back out, removed the unneeded junction box (which they'd initially insisted was required by code) and fixed the problem. PDX Electric is not competent and not safe to use. I, unfortunately, was not able to work with PDX electric but wanted to give a heads up to other homeowners that if you like to ask questions and clarity proposals and details, then you should probably work with another company. I imagine their work quality is good, and the value seems to be there, but it's always a red flag when vendors don't like answering simple questions upfront or throughout the project. PDX bid on a multi-thousand dollar job. A small part of that were electric outlets swap outs. When they change it from per-outlet rate to a time oriented rate and I asked clarifying questions around a rough estimate for how long it might take, they gave no answer. When I nudge for a response, the owner sent me a rude email out of the blue. No one told me I was being unreasonable, and in reality I only asked a few questions. I offered my apologies as well as desire to book the full $6K job, and I got the cold shoulder. Bummer! read more

Where to start... PDX Electric was fantastic from start to finish. We recently bought a house and a few things came up during the inspection phase. They were asked to give a quote (along with a couple of other electricians). We were impressed with the detail and transparency or their quote, especially compared to the other similar quotes with less information. We took them up on the quote after closing. They did all the work while sticking exactly to their budget. There were some hiccups along the way, nothing related to them or their work but other contractors. The technician was great. He figured out our issue quickly and fixed it even faster. We even bonded over certain health issues we have faced. Unfortunately, there was an issue with the check we used to pay, which has since been resolved, but not before the owner left us nasty voice messages. I called the owner and asked if it was company policy to speak to customers the way he did or if his vitriol was specific to us. His apology rang hollow; it felt more like he was sorry he was being called out and not sorry that he had lost a customer. I hope if you use this company (don't) you have a better experience than we did, and I hope that the technician who serviced our home finds a better company to work for. read more

Sometimes as a homeowner you get to spend a lot of money on really un-sexy work, like replacing the guts of your electrical panel after a home inspector tells you he sees singe marks in there (YIKES!). This is where great contractors like PDX Electric come in. These guys quoted us a clear, straightforward price to do the work. And they did a great looking job. They were pleasant to deal with and straightforward with communication. Their work passed inspection from the city permit people. It looks great on the inside. Updating my review based on the following: After 3 additional rounds of updates to estimates, I was told that they were no longer interested in doing any work with me because they could no longer be profitable given the amount of updates they've had to do - that would be 3, and asking for a 4th - for 8-12k of work, e.g. not a small chunk of change, and nor are these updates net new, but revisions based on plan changes. Note that the work they do is good, but be careful about reading through their estimates to make sure they include only the work you're requesting. read more

I hired PDX Electric for a bathroom ventilation fan replacement. The one being replaced was almost 20 years old, and while it operated well, the plastic vent that covered the fan had yellowed with age. Lonny and an assistant (whose name I did not catch) arrived on the early side of the installation window, which was great for us! They made the installation look easy, and the results look great and it functions well. The overall process took about 90 minutes, which was much quicker than I could have done it. They were very friendly throughout the entire process - from setup, to installation, to clean-up, to departure from our home. Great people, and great work. I'd gladly use them again for my electrical needs, and I'd recommend them without hesitation. FYI, this was a Panasonic fan installation, and they are known to be a very quiet bathroom fan. This one is no exception -- REALLY quiet and worth the money over the cheaper alternatives. read more

The let-down hurts more when expectations are based on Yelp reviews. I know diddly about electricity, so I read a few articles and watched a few youtube videos just to get some basic understanding of the project and basic questions to ask. Based on their Yelp reviews, PDX Electric was my first choice despite the longer wait and higher estimate to do some electrical work in my kitchen. PDX Electric charges $135 for the first hour and $95 for each hour thereafter. This seems to be the standard rate for Portland electricians. Thus, if the electrician is working in my house for 4 hours I can reasonably expect a bill and a value of $420 for labor, and if the electrician works for 10 hours I can expect a bill and a value of $990 for labor. PDX Electric's proposal didn't provide an estimate of time it would take, so it was difficult to tell if the electrician would be on the job for 4 hours or 10 hours, but based on PDX Electric's proposal of $1,242 plus permit fees it looked like they were estimating 8 or 9 hours of labor plus parts. When I emailed PDX Electric for confirmation and to get an estimate on how long the project would take, Marty said the hourly rate is the same for all projects and that the "price includes the 1st trip for rough and the 2nd trip for trim plus materials." I didn't know what "rough" and "trim" meant so I asked, thinking there might be some confusion about the scope of the work since my walls are already open. The panel is in the basement about ten feet from where the new receptacles would go. Marty wrote back that "it means there is a trip for the rough wiring and a trip for installing the receptacles and switches." There was still no estimate of the length of time for labor and I still could not tell whether we were looking at two trips in one day, two trips spread out over a couple of weeks, a total of 4 hours labor or a total of 10 hours labor. After I again asked for clarification on the work, Marty wrote "My sincere apologies. Due to unforeseen circumstances, PDX Electric must remove ourselves from bidding/working on your project." It is difficult to not be cynical at this point. $990 for 10 hours of labor seems fair; $990 for 3 or 4 hours labor does not. I think Marty did us both a favor. Edited to add: PICs of the proposal have been added. The proposal says nothing about how long the "Base Bid" project (or any other option) was estimated to take. In short, the only way any customer can know whether they are being charged parts plus $95 per hour vs. $395 per hour when considering a proposal is to have some basic idea of how long the electrician would actually be on the project. What a let down, especially after all the good reviews. Needed overhead lighting installed in two rooms & selected two ceiling fans. What went wrong- 1) the tech broke the shade of one of the fans & the $50 dimmable/fan control light switch. So I had to go back to the stores & attempt exchanges. 2) Home Depot wouldn't accept the return on the light switch so was out the $50. 3) paid $1500 for basically an incomplete job bc still had to wire the light switch & finish installing the ceiling fan 4) When changing the light switch from an outlet to the overhead light, tech didn't wire something correctly & an entire circuit didn't work for over a week while we waited on a service manager to come out. (Note the service manager was very friendly & helpful & said he suspected the owner would give us a call based upon my experience BUT never did hear from anyone) 5) For running the power up & overhead in one room the guy drilled the hole SO CLOSE to the wall & stud that we can not get this thing patched correctly. I understand they they don't aren't responsible for damage done to drywall & we knew we would have to patch it...but for the LOVE don't put it in such a place where it can't be secured! Hindsight, the last good review was many months ago, so perhaps lately people have been having poor experiences & just thinking it was out of the norm & not want to give a bad review. no other company called us back! Our order was expensive, but reasonable for what we needed. New light fixtures wired in the living room and dining room. Fixed breakfast den hanging light. Fix with new kitchen overhead fluorescent. Fix porch light and also wire the switches for upstairs, hall, and porch from downstairs switch. Bathroom lights now work (and are new). Basement light at the foot of the stairs and an added extra light. washer/dryer section light fixed. And fixed with new fluorescent lights in the main basement part too. Oh and they repaired with new fixtures 3 other basement lights.... I forgot about those. Excellent job, I would Highly recommend them to anyone. read more

Came home from out of town to find our hallway light and a bunch of outlets and floor heater not working. Found them on yelp. Said they were busy 4 weeks out. No problem -asked to be put on a list in case anything comes up sooner. Guy showed up at an earlier date at 8am with no call. No problem. He checked the fuse box. Reset an AFCI outlet -said that was the problem and charged us $130. He was finished in literally 7 minutes. The problem is, that it keeps tripping. So I called back and said he didn't fix the issue. They refuse to send someone else out without charging us the initial $130. The girl on the phone (Kylie?) told me that all of those things shouldn't be hooked up to one AFCI and that's why it keeps tripping. Okay, why didn't the electrician that came out explain any of this to me? Does Kylie know more than your electrician? Then the manager called to apologize -to which we said thank you, we just wanted the issue explained so we could fix it. Not just have a guy come out, not explain anything except to push the reset button, and leave with the issue (being resolved while he was here, as they said) but not ten minutes after he leaves (as I say). So the manager hung up on my husband?! Yikes Btw -I wish I could show you a pic of the guy who came out, his butt crack (not his underwear) literally hung out 6+ inches between his shirt and his pants and it was disgusting. read more

They showed up on time for setting up the project and get info for a bid, got the bid together within a day, emailed it to me and we set up a convenient time to get the project done within a week. That day, they showed up in the middle of the 2 hour appointment window they gave us, and performed the work quickly, to our satisfaction, and cleaned up after finishing. I did not actually end up using PDX electric, but based on the service I got just in the proposal phase they will definitely be one of my first calls that next time I need electrical work. I recently had an electrical emergency, the kind that could leave you without power unless you get someone on it right away. I dealt with Kilie and she worked diligently to try to get someone out asap. Unfortunately another electrician told me they could do it that day about 10 min before Kilie called me back. She was very gracious about it and understood my predicament. Hey and if something happens with the other guy I will defiantly call them up. I read the other negative review before calling them and my thought was hey not so bad if that is worst case I will take it. HOME OWNER TIP #1: One thing you need to understand is that there are 2 ways to pay for electrical work. The first is hourly every company has an hourly rate and they can bill you time plus materials. The second is a prebid flat rate where you get the security of knowing exactly how much it will cost before hand. There are a lot of unknowns in your walls and so the estimator gives it his best guess and some jobs go faster and others slower. But you don't get a refund if your job goes amazing smooth (nor should you expect one) the same way you don't pay more if it goes horribly over time. HOME OWNER TIP #2: This is just my opinion: be careful if a companies hourly rate is too low it is usually because their guys are half as fast. read more

This review is only for the customer service. I just moved into a new condo, and having had an exhaust fan in every bathroom I've had before, saw the vent in the bathroom, couldn't get it running, and thought it was a broken exhaust fan. So I set up an appointment with PDX electric. Their website request form was very easy to use, and I quickly got a call back to verify my info, go over rates, and set up an appointment. They worked with me to find a good time, and gave me a two hour window, noting it would likely be on the early side and that the electrician would call when on his way. I also received a reminder call, which was very professional. Day of, 20 minutes before my appointment window, electrician calls and says he will be there right at the start of the time provided. He shows up promptly, is very professional, and quickly diagnoses the problem. The problem was, THERE IS NO EXHAUST FAN. It's just a forced air vent, so nothing to turn on or off. Boy did I feel stupid. But the electrician was very nice about it and explained how that system compares to the exhaust fans I was used to. Because he didn't have to do any work, they didn't charge me. But I felt bad for wasting their time, and my experience with them was WONDERFUL other than my own ignorance. If their electric work is as great as their customer service, they'll treat you right. Next time I have something ACTUALLY go wrong, they will be my first call. read more

If I could write a song about our experience with PDX electric, I would. A previous, well intentioned electrician found knob and tube wiring in our house, and told us we'd have to rip it out in the next several years and rewire our whole upstairs. :: gulp :: We called in PDX electric to get a quote for the job. They could have easily told us $10k, and we would have paid it, because our chosen risk level is level zero when it comes to electrical fires. However, the electrician who came to quote looked at the wiring and said "nah, it just needs to be rerouted a bit - we can fix that in a service call." So, the day of the service call came, and the actual electrician cams over, looked at it, and said "look, it's in great shape. I'll put a bit of tape over this end, but I'm not going to charge you - nothing needs to be done." Wahoooo!! read more

I just bought a new condo, and the home inspection revealed a lot of electrical issues with the place. Some were DIY mistakes by previous owners, some were OK under old electrical code but needed updating, and some were things that I wanted to add to improve the electrical service for all my home electronics. PDX Electric came highly recommended from several sources: friends, neighbors, and my realtor. It was an easy decision to call them. Marty read the inspection report, and then he met me at the new place to talk about what I wanted done. He was prompt and courteous, and he had a very reasonable written proposal to me that afternoon. Talk about fast! He sent out a crew of three electricians, and they came in like a SWAT team to do every item on the proposal in a single day. They were great! In fact, they were so great that we decided to go ahead with a bathroom remodel we had planned to do later. Marty came back to give me an estimate on the new project, and we jumped on it. The same week, another crew of three electricians (shout out to Lynn, Dave, and James!) came out to to rough in all the new circuits for the bathroom: under-floor heat, jacuzzi tub with a motor and extra heat, heated towel warmer, extra outlets, ceiling fan, and a light in the shower. Bam! Done in one day! Every single person was great to work with. They always took the time to explain if I had any questions, and they were very sensitive about noise and the cleanup bothering me or my new neighbors. These folks aren't just knowledgeable professionals; they're a bunch of nice guys who look out for the customer. PDX Electric was a sub-contractor for our kitchen remodel. They did a walk through with our general contractor and their bid was egregiously wrong, which I did not know at the time since the bid went to the general contractor. I found out when the contractor came to me for more money for the electrical work, stating the work had gone over the allowance included in the kitchen remodel estimate. Upon reviewing the bid, I pointed out the many errors. My contractor explained that he had received two bids; PDX Electric was the lowest and he admitted to not reviewing the details. He went back to PDX Electric to get the bill down based upon the errors, but the owner would not negotiate. As I was working from home during much of the remodel, I even over heard PDX Electric employees complaining about how belligerent the owner was - rude and bad tempered. I was shocked that the owner would neither admit to nor apologize for the erroneously bid. PDX Electric had to make multiple trips and worked many more hours because the details of the bid were wrong, and luckily my husband and I were present as the electricians did their work so we could correct them. They even installed one too many canned lights, but 2 in the wrong place, and then said they would have to charge us to fix - no, I said, I am not paying for your errors. I think PDX Electric is not an ethical company and would never recommend them or use them again. read more

We recently bought a house and knew we needed some hefty work done to replace an old, crusty electrical panel from the 40's and to make sure our outlets were brought up to code. PDX Electric wasn't the cheapest bid we got but they were completely in line with the majority of quotes we received. The day of service two electricians came out and arrived when they said they would. They methodically ticked through the work order and even did a few ad-hoc jobs we needed help with. At the end of the appointment they walked us through the updates they did and made sure to answer all of our questions. The best part of all of this is that they came in right at cost and were true to their estimate. We've been having a lot of work done on the house lately and I cannot tell you how many contractors spring new costs and delay work at the time of service. PDX Electric doesn't do this. Not only was PDX the most competitive, but they also were the most educational during the quoting process. Rather than just tell me how much each project would cost, he spent the time to tell me my options, why it's important, what the work would involve and helped to avoid unnecessary costs. We needed a significant amount of work done, including a new panel. We had 3 companies come out and PDX was by far the best bid. The day of the job they showed up on time and got to work. When an issue came up with the panel instead of trying to upsale me they came up with a solution that kept the cost down. The night following the work we lost half our power at about 930pm... I called Dave and he drove from his house in Forest Grove to mine in Tigard. He checked all the work and discovered that it was a problem with PGEs meter(not PDX electrics work). What a great company. We did some research on YELP and made some calls and decided to use this team. We were having a ceiling fan installed on our first floor and didn't have direct acess to the wiring in the upper floor. We had alot of concerns re: the wiring and the amount of holes that would be made to accomodate the fan - p.s. a lot of scary videos on You Tube of what some electricians have done!! Kiely was very reassuring over the phone that their team is conscious of these type of things.
