Conch fritter
Stacey E.

Having family in Miami, we are INUNDATED with suggestions for food places! This was one I decided to visit on my own while visiting my Alabama boy at UM. I was so pleasantly surprised at how much like home it felt. Not flashy or pretentious, but comfortable atmosphere, gold beer and delicious food. Complete with a view that we were able to watch manatee swim by. The conch fritters were so tasty, but next time I will choose the marinated salad version. Our fish Rueben was weird, but AMAZING! My blackened fish sandwich was perfect. 3 beer and our bill was $70.

We were told to go for the conch fritters which did not disappoint. We got half an order since it was just 2 of us, and it was more than enough as an appetizer. We broth had blackened mahi tacos, which were so flavorful. They did lettuce wraps for a gluten free option. We had rum drinks as we listened to live music and watched the fish in the river. Great spot. Not fancy, but food was great and service was good. Definitely worth a stop if you're in Key Largo.

To keep it simple: chill ambience, good food, GREAT prices, and a warm atmosphere of welcome. The staff was great, on top of our drinks and gave us good food recommendations for food that actually saved us money! The band was great and the atmosphere was so serene, right on the water. Can't beat it, happy to come back!

I don't know why the reviews here are so mixed! This place is clearly an institution (no other restaurants around for miles!) and knows what it is trying to be. We had a blast trying local fried seafood (their conch fritters really are amazing) and taking in the old Florida vibes. Definitely worth a detour on Old Card Sound Road!

As the meme goes, Alabama Jacks shall be protected at all costs from gentrification! Alabama Jack's is located on the "back road" to the Keys (Card Sound Road), and thus on route with cool urban exploration stops (abandoned military communications bases & antennas) as well as the road to high end Ocean Reef club. There is street parking on the side of the restaurant as well as literally across the street. Once you're inside, you wait to be seated. The hostess will try to accommodate waterfront seating (ask for this). Besides watching the boats cruise you end up with a little farmers tan. The decor is rustic roadhouse featuring a lot of old license plates and the music similarly rustic. It looks like they have space for a live band as well. Alabama Jacks would be like the dive bar / roadhouse straight from central casting. The crowd was a cool mix of locals, boaters, tourists and anyone in between. This the vibe you come for! Since it was during the daytime and I had a long drive, I had a soda (free refills!) i ordered their teriyaki chicken sandwich with cheese (an extra 50 cents) but it tasted like regular grilled chicken with sweet bbq sauce, served open face on a burger bun with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. My sweet potato fries were extra (the burger doesn't come with sides) and could have been a little crispier but still all good. Keeping with the southern and keys vibe, I ordered a deliciously fluffy key lime pie.

Best fried conch in the keys!

Alabama Jacks is an institution! We start our trek into the keys there every trip. The vibe is perfect, great prices and super service.

Stopping at Alabama Jack is how we officially enter the keys. It's a total dive bar that is the perfect intro to the Keys. The place is large and open on all sides so it's kind of a massive covered patio. We stop her primarily for the conch fritters and it never disappoints. It's a must try. They have a variety of food options with plenty of seafood on the menu. Service is always great as well. Only meh is that the bathrooms aren't really great and trash was overflowing with no TP last time we visited but, that matches the overall vibe and not enough to deter us from visiting again!

Their conch fritters are unlike other places. They are oval and thick. Large chunks of conch inside plus herbs. They were great. The fish fingers and crab cakes were great too. I would definitely go back.

Service was good and the location on the water is enjoyable. Really enjoyed the conch fritters!

Eat here if you have no where else to go. I have no idea why the fried conch is so recommended.

Are the hours different for the slow season or is the hours on maps are true? We called the phone and it says disconnected.

Hours are always 11am -7 pm .one of the phone numbers is wrong I tried calling then found the correct number . Try a few times & there's a correct number

Is Alabama Jack's still open. We get a message that the phone has been disconnected. We're coming from a couple house away and don't want to make that long trip for nothing. If they are could you tell me what their hours are? Thanks.

They are open every day from 11-5!

Is this Place still open? Phone disconnected -'f still Open do you have oysters on half shell or fried?

Yes we are still open! Phone line has been down having trouble getting it back up. No oysters of any kind!

Is this place open? I tried to call and the number is disconected.

Yes we are still open! We just got a new credit card system and we are having trouble getting our phone line back up. Our hours are every day from 11 to 5:30!

Is the dining room open today?

Yes. I went last Monday. They have their tables spaced out and it was wonderful. Enjoy!

Are dogs allowed?

Unfortunately at this time we only allow service animals. We apologize for any inconvenience!

Do they serve lionfish?

Not that I know of. They stick to the menu. Lazy Days does once in a while. You have to call for availability. A little further down.

Is the owner from Alabama? I am from Enterprise, Al. Is the owner a BAMA die hard fan?

I believe they are a transplant!

Elite modern review:…read more Very modern and trendy place to be. Perfect for young adults and college crowds looking to have a great time. The music was on point, creating an energetic vibe all night. The bar setup was amazing, fast service and great drinks. It is a little tricky to find it, once you find the parking lot, it is super confusing as to where you enter. There are two floors and multiple doors. Finally someone directed us up the stairs and to the back of the building. We were greeted and given menus fairly quickly, but it took an extraordinarily long time to get our food that day. The hollandaise sauce was atypical as it tasted like there was cheese in it. The smoked salmon on a bagel tasted okay, but fell apart when it was picked up. The breakfast burrito lacked a lot of flavor. The blueberry pancake, although slightly overcooked, was actually very good. The bacon and fried potatoes were not crisp, as I prefer them. So if you like crispy bacon and fried potatoes, ask for that when placing your order. The windows and floors are dirty and the women's bathroom had a round hole with a dirty sock stuck in it on the floor. I actually tripped over it. And the bathroom could have been much cleaner. With a few improvements, Sharkeys could be more appealing to tourists going through and visiting the Keys.

I must admit I was already pretty wasted by the time I got here. I do remember the clam chowder being pretty good. Nothing like San Francisco chowder but still good. The coconut shrimp was delicious as hell. And we also ordered the sampler and met some people at the bar. Don't remember much about the food after that. Those drinks were strong. One thing I do remember is almost being stranded. We took a Lyft because obviously we were drinking so responsibilities you know. But then the Lyft could not get back to Gilbert's because of road work. One of the employees was nice enough to drop us off at the gas station near by so we could get home!! 10/10 service!!! The band is playing, volume isn't prohibitively high, but you do raise your voice a bit to talk. You don't have to scream though. Service is excellent, you never feel rushed here, even though the food came out really quickly. Laid back island feeling you'd expect. Candelario is phenomenal, made us feel right at home. They do charge an automatic 18% gratuity and a 3% credit card fee; the credit card fees popping up everywhere annoys the he'll out of me. The gratuity is probably fair though, since I'm sure they get a lot of tourists that aren't as accustomed to tipping. 10/10, as always.

Update: went back on last day - just as good. Our son got the same meal (country breakfast); I went a little off menu and elected to have chorizo on the side rather than bacon/sausage. The prices on the menu are pretty reasonable. I was going to order the bagel and lox for $16 but then I saw that the lobster Benedict was also $16, so I ordered that instead. I was disappointed though because the "hash browns" on the side were not the homemade kind, but a frozen deep fried cake. I was also disappointed to find that the "lobster" was actually a breaded deep fried mixture, like a crab cake. I intentionally did not order the crab cake Benedict because I don't like that kind of thing. My daughter ordered the breakfast sandwich with bacon and Swiss cheese. It was good, and pretty big, so she could barely eat half of it. There is a nice view of the water from the restaurant. The parking lot is pretty small. I'd probably try a different restaurant if I'm back in the area.
