I actually had this marked in one of my culinary collections, so I was super excited to try it and give my opinion. I learned in the Keys that most business' don't answer the phone, but after 3 days I just made the drive. I spoke with a nice man sitting on one of the patio tables that was eating a coconut, that it usually opens when someone feels like it. It was an hour past their posted time. As my daughter and I were leaving, she noticed a vehicle in the parking lot with the Mar Bar brand on it. It was one of the owners. She told me they weren't opening that day because they were waiting on stone crab, but try next weekend. Sadly, I had to leave on Tuesday and never got to eat there. read more

The waiter was so rude I thought he wanted to fight or something. Initially, I thought he was kidding, but he truly was a total jerk. I have been to every bar in Islamorada and never seen anything like it. In fact, I live in a beach town just like this and have just never seen someone this unhappy to be "serving". Very weird experience. We had our stone crab claws, paid them, and got out of there. I won't be back. read more

Probably "the place" to find Stone Crab claws near Isle Morada in mid Oct when season on these had just opened. Very good pricing for the area. Dont expect atmosphere that is anything more than a bare bones dock side experience. Not obvious to locate. Beer and food menu pretty limited. Stone crab. Number one food I wanted to eat while in the area. I paid so much high price to eat stone crab in Miami before and was looking for more economical way to enjoy stone crab. Not too far drive from Key Largo, I was so happy to find this place on Yelp. Stone crab was $3 each! My only regret was I didn't have a hotel booked nearby. I had to drive two more hours to key west after this, so I didn't have any drinks. I wish I know then I would have stayed nearby to enjoy SUP, then eat crabs and oysters with a glass of white wine. I bet a chilled white wine paired so well with the food. I guess I need to come back to this area again. read more

The Mar Bar is the spot for good vibes and great food! We stumbled upon it looking for a drink and some apps and we hit the jackpot. Our bartender Brandon was awesome. Super friendly and welcoming and took good care of us! We had the shrimp ceviche and the local beers and loved it! They are known for their snow crabs but also offer great options like fish dip , ceviche and oysters. It's a typical tiki hut bar on the water with great local beer, wine and a few munchie options. Perfect for an afternoon trip or after boat happy hour! Will deff be returning! read more

I am a stone crab aficionado and am always in the hunt for them during the stone crab season. We stumbled upon this little spot one night, and what a find! $3 stone crabs! The bartender was super nice and attentive even though she seemed to be the only one working there to wait tables. It seemed like lots of locals go there and there was a fun trivia night on the night we went. The vibe is very casual and I'd definitely return ! read more

Mar Bar, Tavernier, Florida Stopped here because I was after stone crabs so this restaurant came up on my Yelp search. The place is off the main road and hidden away behind a main building. We had to asked a local fisherman where the place was. We were a bit confused to find a small local bar with a great canal view. The patrons were all local and somewhat friendly. The bar attendant was nice and asked what we were looking for, unfortunately stone crabs were out of season. She offered the sandwich shop next door as a good dining option or the only two items the bar sells: smoked fish dip with chips and a shrimp ceviche. We ordered both and within minutes we had our two items. The food was super fresh, delicious and light. The only downside was it was pricey for one beer, one ice tea and those 2 items (we paid $32.00). The environment was cool but not for us. It was more of a local hangout than a visitors / tourist environment. Would we go again? I don't think so. I even forgot to take pictures of the food. I took pictures of the beautiful view. read more

Do they have a fan club? Count me in. The Mar Bar is a hugely informal bar with few food options. The stone crab claws were 4 bucks a piece in Feb 2022. Delicious and fun to eat. Great atmosphere and the crab claws were delicious. This is a great example of a little hidden gem that lives on in the keys.

We had a disappointing lunch here…read more We were in the keys specifically to enjoy Florida lobster season which started last week. As we were getting ready to head home, I had read in their ad in the local newspaper that they featured fresh Florida lobster. So I delayed our departure a couple hours just to make sure we stopped here for lunch. The restaurant has an outside bar and patio dining plus inside a/c dining. We chose to sit in the inside. I'd asked the server what Florida lobster dishes they offered and the prices. She said they had two -- lobster bites and a lobster tail. I order the tail with sweet potato fries as my side. When the meal came, I saw that what was delivered was NOT fresh Florida lobster. The manager (?) told me they hadn't pulled the traps yet and didn't have any Florida lobster -- which was strange as it was almost a week into the season and their two ads touted it. Anyhow, he suggested the snapper instead and I chose the coconut yellowtail sandwich from their specials. This was barely edible -- over fried, over cooked, and dried out. I took only a couple bites and coins t even eat the rest. Meanwhile, my husband had ordered the cracked conch appetizer. We've had this all over Florida (he's a native) and in the Carribean. This version was quite different. It had large square pieces of conch in a heavy fried batter. I would not recommend this dish, either.

After lunch we took a walk thru the marina to the beach in front of the Sandbar on Tap where we took pictures of rusted cannons and anchors. Went upstairs to the Sandbar On Tap in the elevator but optional stairs provided. The menu offered basic meals of the Keys and a few frozen drinks and beers on tap. It was an immediate OMG from all of us. It was dead empty but just spent time looking out with unobstructed views at the blue green ocean to the boats docked at the actual sandbar. The higher elevation and closer proximity definitely made the views unmatched.

One thing you'll notice pretty quickly in the Keys is that many restaurants close fairly early, and this one closes at 10 p.m., so we always make sure to get there in time. I've eaten at both the bar and at a table. This year, since my nephew was with us, we grabbed a table and enjoyed another great meal. My absolute favorite dish here is the fish topped with a generous portion of crab. It is absolutely incredible! Funny enough, years ago I actually ordered the pistachio-crusted fish, but the kitchen accidentally brought me the fish with crab instead. Let's just say I wasn't disappointed by that mistake! On this trip, I finally tried the pistachio-crusted fish, and it was delicious too. My nephew couldn't stop talking about the seafood linguine. It was loaded with seafood, and he absolutely loved it. The atmosphere is one of the best parts of dining here. The waterfront views are beautiful, and you can choose to sit under the tiki hut or kick off your shoes and enjoy the sand beneath your feet. It's such a relaxing place to unwind after a day in the Keys. We've also had the coconut shrimp, which comes with an amazing dipping sauce that I'd definitely recommend. For drinks, I tried their espresso martini for the first time. They add cocoa to it, which I've never seen before. It definitely caught me by surprise, but in a good way. I always enjoy when a bartender puts a creative spin on a classic cocktail instead of making the same version everyone else serves. Between the beautiful setting, delicious food, and laid-back atmosphere, this is a place we look forward to visiting every year.
