Having family in Miami, we are INUNDATED with suggestions for food places! This was one I decided to visit on my own while visiting my Alabama boy at UM. I was so pleasantly surprised at how much like home it felt. Not flashy or pretentious, but comfortable atmosphere, gold beer and delicious food. Complete with a view that we were able to watch manatee swim by. The conch fritters were so tasty, but next time I will choose the marinated salad version. Our fish Rueben was weird, but AMAZING! We were told to go for the conch fritters which did not disappoint. We got half an order since it was just 2 of us, and it was more than enough as an appetizer. We broth had blackened mahi tacos, which were so flavorful. They did lettuce wraps for a gluten free option. We had rum drinks as we listened to live music and watched the fish in the river. I got here toward the end of the day so I had the deck to myself for the most part and enjoyed a beautiful sunset on the water. The view is impossible to beat, and the waitress said sometimes they even have crocodiles and manatees that come through! I mostly saw birds and fish but still a fun experience. Went to Jacks today. Seated promptly at 12:15. Sat down ordered drinks sand food. Then it happened. The bugs assaulted us like they were getting last meal. Food came and it wasn't much better. Fried shrimp was very fishy. Never had fishy tasting fried shrimp.. conch fritters were all very chewy. The fried fish was very fishy. To keep it simple: chill ambience, good food, GREAT prices, and a warm atmosphere of welcome. The staff was great, on top of our drinks and gave us good food recommendations for food that actually saved us money! The band was great and the atmosphere was so serene, right on the water. As a local that visits 4 times plus a year..I might get lucky eating here once a year. They make up their own hours... what a disappoint most of the time. I hope they open up another restraunt serving the conch fritters nearby and go out of business. How does a business run with closing 3 hours before they are suppose too every damn day of the week...making every excuse in the book every time I visit... it's not worth the disappointment anymore. I'm only giving it 2 stars because of the live music and the canal scenery; it would be zero. I also loved that they had wet wipes at the table. No hostess, so it took over an hour for the waitresses to seat the huge line of people waiting one at a time, despite at least 7 tables being free. I'd have to estimate maybe 2 dozen tables for 6 waitresses, and the service was abysmal. She didn't know she was out of sweet tea, so she brought unsweet was a nice assumption, but to get the new drinks, it took another 30 minutes at least because she had to wait for ice. I ordered a burger medium rare, and our table corrected her when she repeated back medium well. The burger, unfortunately, came well done. Sent it back. The next one came out cold. The bun was also cold. Like out of the fridge and on my plate. I asked to send it back, but by then, the rest of my group was done eating, so I just ate the rare, cold burger. Disgusting. Spent maybe 3 hours there because of the slow service. Could use a manager to be in charge. Mediocre dive bar at best. read more

We got the small seafood sampler and I can tell you that there is nothing small about it - two of us barely made a dent in it. The fried shrimp were our favorite. As the meme goes, Alabama Jacks shall be protected at all costs from gentrification! Alabama Jack's is located on the "back road" to the Keys (Card Sound Road), and thus on route with cool urban exploration stops (abandoned military communications bases & antennas) as well as the road to high end Ocean Reef club. There is street parking on the side of the restaurant as well as literally across the street. Once you're inside, you wait to be seated. The hostess will try to accommodate waterfront seating (ask for this). Besides watching the boats cruise you end up with a little farmers tan. The decor is rustic roadhouse featuring a lot of old license plates and the music similarly rustic. It looks like they have space for a live band as well. Alabama Jacks would be like the dive bar / roadhouse straight from central casting. The crowd was a cool mix of locals, boaters, tourists and anyone in between. This the vibe you come for! Since it was during the daytime and I had a long drive, I had a soda (free refills!) i ordered their teriyaki chicken sandwich with cheese (an extra 50 cents) but it tasted like regular grilled chicken with sweet bbq sauce, served open face on a burger bun with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. My sweet potato fries were extra (the burger doesn't come with sides) and could have been a little crispier but still all good. Alabama Jack's is one of those awesome laid-back spots where you can relax, enjoy good food, have a drink, and even pull up by boat. The atmosphere is casual and fun, but what really keeps us coming back is the service, especially Deya. Every time we visit, she's incredibly quick to greet us, get us seated, and make sure we're taken care of with a genuinely friendly attitude. Stopping at Alabama Jack is how we officially enter the keys. It's a total dive bar that is the perfect intro to the Keys. The place is large and open on all sides so it's kind of a massive covered patio. We stop her primarily for the conch fritters and it never disappoints. It's a must try. They have a variety of food options with plenty of seafood on the menu. Service is always great as well. As an 'appetizer', the wings don't come with any sides (except blue cheese dressing, which was enough for this blue cheese lover); but there are twelve pieces. The atmosphere is super casual, maybe too much so with how run down everything looks and the use of cheap plastic folding tables. Service was also poor and very unwelcoming. The food was mediocre at best, with the conch fritter being really overrated and over-priced. Basically, just a huge, over-fried mass of dough with some conch sprinkled in. A fun place to stop while traveling from Miami to Key West. The restaurant is right on the water and has a perfect breeze blowing through. Situated on the water with a view of the mangroves this place is off the beaten path or on the way somewhere depending on where you are in your life. We came here because we were jonesing for some conch and a cold beer. We ordered the conch fritter plate and the conch chowder. The conch fritter plate comes with two sides and neither disappointed, the potato salad was scrumptious, felt homemade. The macaroni salad was also delicious. Honestly, cannot complain about anything we had or experienced. Our waitress was lovely, the vibe was vibing, but I will say the mosquitoes were biting. They do provide off if you ask. When you walk in there's a sign that says "please don't effin seat yourself" but there's no host table or anyone in sight. The place was basically empty so I walked up to the bar to get the bartenders attention to hopefully get a table and she wouldn't even look in my direction. I spoke to her and she had an awful attitude, terrible way to treat a customer. Asked another person where the bathroom was later on and he wouldn't even look at me either, just pointed to the bathroom. Customer service was absolutely horrendous. Don't even get me started on how disgusting this place is. Folding tables, sticky flimsy chairs, food served on styrofoam plates, plastic silverware, filthy floors and flies all over my food. The menu says "The Best!" Under the conch fritters, it should say the absolute worst in the country. The other food we got was also garbage, especially the fries. I feel sick 10 minutes after eating that food. Honestly would love to get this place shut down, one call to the health department just might do that. We chose a table by the water. We both began with soups. The conch chowder was decent. And my husband said his soup was fine. That's why there are two stars for this review. My sandwich, however, was a travesty. The fish -- which was supposed to be grouper (it definitely was not) -- was so over fried in old oil that it was nearly black in color and cooked hard. Being hungry, I sandwiched it between the roll and slathered on some tartar sauce to cover the off taste. The guys sitting next to us ordered crabcakes and they came out as dark as two hockey pucks. I love coming here on my way to the Keys. It's everything a dive bar in Florida should be...it's covered outdoor seating, on water, and paper plates and plastic cups. The conch fritters are the best I have had. They are different than most places in that they are large flat fritters vice small round balls..think apple fritter shaped but with conch. This trip I had the shrimp platter with fries and baked beans. The shrimp were seasoned with old bay. The fries and baked beans were just okay. Absolutely terrible experience. Rude staff, low quality deep fried food at high prices, dirty restaurant and food served on styrofoam plates. This place was recommended to us by a boat captain that we took a tour with in Key Largo. We pulled up and immediately noticed it looked ran down but thought maybe that was the "experience or charm" of the experience. We are open to dives, fancy restaurants, burger joints, greasy spoons, high end, fast food, all of it. We immediately noticed a sign that said "don't effing seat yourself" and that should have been our first clue. We were sat and I asked the employee seating us what she recommended, she gave me a few ideas which included a hot dog. I thought that was an interesting menu item to suggest. We ordered our food, and we fed most of it to the fish swimming in the river below. My fish sandwich was dry, flavorless, and I ate a small part of it. Our server was very curt, surly, I felt like I was a burden by speaking to her. I asked for a refill on my ice tea to have a server sigh out of exasperation and say "ok" in a very annoyed voice. I was a server for many years and subsequently I usually tip very well because I understand how hard the job can be. We did not leave a tip, which again is very unusual for us, but the service was horrid, the food was gross, and we did not feel a tip was warranted. A tip is extra money you give a server in exchange for good service. We did not get good service. As we were walking of the restaurant the server yelled, " TIPS ARE APPRECIATED" across the restaurant in front of all of the other customers. It was extremely unprofessional and inappropriate. It took everything I had not to turn around and yell back "good service is also appreciated!". When I was a server and didn't receive a tip I had a little self introspection and adjusted accordingly. Not this gal. My husband and I both had upset stomachs after leaving. Suffice it to say we won't be back. The only redeeming part of this meal was feeding our food to the fish. This place may have been a cool biker bar back in the day, and may now be just getting by from the myth and lore of times past but in the year 2024 I think they are a hard pass. read more
