    Beef Shawarma Sandwich

Came on a Sunday afternoon, parking is a bit tricky but easy to find on side streets. They have a couple picnic tables you can eat there or walk a couple blocks to a few different parks to enjoy. Beef shawarma was perfect!

My partner is from Lebanon, and we have been on the search for quality Middle Eastern food. This was the best Middle Eastern food we have found in Austin yet. We ordered the Chicken Schwarma wrap, as well as the Beef Awarmi meal, and Turkish salad. The salad was surprisingly fresh with the most delicious flavoring from the many herbs. The Beef Awarmi meal was tasty with pickled turips, and a coleslaw that was so very unique (not your typical Americna coleslaw). Also the FRIES. I do not know what they sprinkle on for spices or how they prepare, but woa!! Highly recommend!

Food was filling, chicken was soft! Came with cream. Staff is very nice and friendly! Food was ready in five minutes. There was plenty seating and it was a calm environment, many students around and other food trucks neighborhing it.

(9/10 overall) Caution: Long, detailed review (and my life story) ahead! TLDR; the food is DELISH. So, one of my 2025 goals has been to find the best chicken shawarma in the Austin area. I know, SAD. But, I needed a focus so I didn't go completely insane. IYKYK. Plus, I got to visit with my awesome son, who delivered all these meals to me (for a handsome "tip", of course). Since I was "strongly encouraged" into early retirement (in the name of efficiency), I decided to spend a little of that sweet DRP money on something truly important: chicken shawarma research. Thanks, Space-boy! After trying many spots (maybe 20), I can officially say Al Shami is my favorite so far. I even ordered three different times just to be sure Note: The photos I'm sharing were taken at home (hence the fine china, AKA paper plates). I live about 30-45 minutes outside Austin, so I always order tons of extra food for the week. So just FYI, a few items got a quick air fryer refresh before their photo shoot. **See: "big back" videos on TikTok if you want to know what plays in my head while ordering $100 worth of chicken shawarma just for myself Chicken Shawarma Wrap - 9/10 Saj bread, about a foot long, crispy outside, tender, thin, spit-shaved chicken inside with pickles & garlic sauce. Simple and delicious. Pro tip: Get extra garlic and pomegranate sauce for generous dippsies. *I added extra shawarma this last time for $2 & it was huge! Chicken Shawarma Plate - 9/10 Came with bread (saj with a thin pita buffer inside), rice, pickles, and sauces. I used this meal to make a monster wrap the next day. Not sure if the bread automatically comes with this meal, but I requested it in the comment box. **The rice was the one thing here I wasn't too fond of. The consistency was good, but the flavor was odd. Maybe it's just me. Sauces - 10/10 All fantastic. * House sauce: Creamy mayo/BBQ vibe, amazing with the fries. * Garlic sauce: More like authentic toum - super garlicky and flavorful (take a Tums first because the garlic is garlicin'!). *This is not ranch-y or yogurt-y sauce. Those can both be tasty, but I prefer the one here. * Pomegranate molasses: To die for! One of the few Austin spots I've tried that has it. It's just 40¢, so grab a few - you'll thank me later. Chicken Tawook Wrap - 10/10 To my surprise, I liked this even more than the shawarma. I don't know what kind of sorcery is going on here, but these are tender, smoky, perfectly seasoned chunks of chicken breast, wrapped in soft, thin bread & dipped in a magical red sauce. I crisped mine up a little in the air fryer, but it's best eaten fresh b/c it's very juicy! Comes with finely chopped tomato and onion (kinda like pico), though I omitted that this last time for the sake of anti-sogginess. Plus, I can't have all those vegetables messing up my meal Chicken Tawook Plate - 10/10 Generous portion of tawook pieces (described above) with rice, charred onion & tomato, pickled veggies, coleslaw, sauces, and triangles of that red-dipped bread. I made mini wraps out of it the next day. Perfection! Can you tell I REALLY like wraps?? lol Fries - 8/10 First two visits were the thin "McDonald's-style" fries; the third had thicker ones. Both good! Pair with the house sauce. PS to Al Shami - I like the thin ones better. Thank you for your attention to this matter. (And yes, the ones in my photo look burnt -- that's on me, my air fryer, and ADHD). Chicken Halabi - 9/10 Chicken shawarma over fries with sauces, saj bread, pickled veggies, and slaw. Pretty much the shawarma plate with fries instead of rice. Location, ordering, etc: Downtown traffic and parking are a little "meh," but since my son picks it up for me, I don't personally have to deal with that. I'd still brave it myself if I had to though. They say they have curbside pickup, but we haven't utilized it. If you do, I recommend calling to make sure it's ready before showing up. Ordering is fast & easy on their website, but if you order right when they open (at 11am), give them some extra time to prepare your food, especially if you have a large order. Oh, and join the rewards program. I got $14 off my last order! I'll include a pic of my receipt showing the discounts. **Forgot to add that all 3 of my orders have been correct & complete. Final Verdict: 9/10 overall (or 5 stars for Yelp purposes) Delicious, consistent, and worth the drive. Whether you're team Shawarma or team Tawook, their food is Yum yum in your tum tum!

My first experience here and I have mixed reviews. While the chicken shawarma wrap looks fire , it lacks in flavor. I thought it would have onions, tomatoes and salad in it as it said while I was ordering. Secondly no option to pick your spice or heat level. I would have enjoyed it with some jalapeños or some authentic spicy sauce or something. But nothing. Good seems very bland. Also chicken seemed to be on the tough side but still edible. I eat Mediterranean foods all the time from all sorts of restaurants and food trucks and would like the option to pick my spice levels. Other than that people seemed super nice that were working at the truck. Will comeback agin to try it and hopefully it will be better next time. Good luck

I was glad we were seated outside though because even though it was a warm evening, their fans were very effective creating a constant gentle breeze. The music enhanced the experience with a fun and upbeat vibe. I truly felt like was sitting at club/bar/restaurant during a cool summer night in Greece! Just incredible. The staff were also great! Friendly and accommodating from the time we checked in for our reservation. Our server was super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful with my gluten sensitivity! The food was delicious too. Shout out to the chefs! The village salad (also reminded me of a traditional Greek village salad) was refreshing, the hot honey halloumi was like nothing I have ever tasted before, I regret not ordering extra to-go!, the Lamb chops made me feel like we were celebrating Easter - the seasoning was spot on and cooked to perfection, the Lamb and beef kefta with rice was also tasty, but the lamb chops are the clear winner. Don't forget to get dessert! If you have a gluten sensitivity like me, you are safe with the Pistachio Panna Cotta. It was a flavor high I didn't want to end! Lol. But seriously, it was super delicious, sweet, and just the right portion. Also FYI: we shared every plate. It's the way to go there, and I'm glad our server recommended that we order everything up front and they simply bring it out as each plate is ready. (Except for dessert and drinks - order those at the appropriate times of course). Speaking of our server, Lauren S, she was on it!!! Not only was she able to serve us and other tables extremely well, there was also a very large party of around 15 people next to us that she also served. Yet she always seemed to be around when you needed her and always with a friendly smile and positive attitude. Shout out to Lauren!!! You were amazing. Thank you for making our anniversary dinner memorable. Can't wait to visit Aba again!

The indoor space flows nicely with the outdoors and feels trendy and polished without being overly formal. Parking is the typical South Congress challenge. There's access to the Music Lane underground garage (with a small validation discount from the restaurant) plus nearby paid lots and street options, but it can feel competitive and a bit chaotic, especially on busier evenings. Plan ahead or use rideshare if you can. Service was great--attentive and smooth throughout our meal with two adults and two kids. We ordered the whipped feta spread (excellent with the pistachios and oil; the house bread was a bit salty), Brussels sprouts (cooked perfectly), grilled chicken kebabs, the shawarma-spiced steak frites, and the grilled Branzino. The Branzino was the clear star of the show--flavorful and well-executed. The chicken and steak were mediocre at best. For dessert we shared the sticky date cake, which had a nice crunch outside and was warm and moist inside. It's a bit pricey (we paid over $240 for the four of us), but the setting, strong service, and that excellent Branzino make it worthwhile. I'd definitely come back.

The kebabs are the true highlight...juicy, flavorful, and grilled to perfection. The portions are quite large as the hubs and I shared a wrap. We were sufficiently full after eating the chicken tikka wrap. Interestingly, the wrap came in a Shawarma King packaging with their contact phone number. So, I assume that Usta staff are sub-contracting from Shawarma King. Usta also has freshly baked bread and classic sides like hummus and rice paired with the main dishes. The restaurant has a homey, lived in feel. It has a few middle eastern artifacts sprinkled throughout the restaurant. The menu offers a wide variety of options, from Iraqi and Adana kebabs to shawarma and traditional Middle Eastern plates, so there are food items for both first timers and regulars who want to explore beyond the basics. They also serve flatbreads where you can have two different toppings. The food focus is on bold, traditional flavors rather than modern takes on middle eastern foods. On the desserts front, they have an assortment of desserts and several sections of ice cream. I had the baklava, which was surprisingly delicious...it was not eye-squinting sweet like a standard baklava. It was crunchy, flavorful, and had nuts that were substantial. Layla, my server, was so super sweet and welcoming. She pointed out that Usta provides its customers free tea. How cool is that? I cannot remember last time I received a free drink.

We got the lamb/beef kebab 1lb and first off the picture online is misleading. It shows for the catering of kebabs, not 1lb. Which is probably on me for not catching that, but that's fine. The kebab itself was just alright. Could have had more seasoning and there chunks of either fat or onions that were not pleasant to chew. The pita was the size of a mini pizza which is nice, but they were so chewy it was disappointing. The sauce was more watery than I would have liked and also not as flavorful. Overall, this was a miss for me.

ABSOLUTE BANGER OF TX BBQ! Here's why:…read more Arrived at 11:05AM to beat any possibility of a crowd; still wasn't the first customer, but definitely in the TOP 5. For my order, I got an order of the Za'atar & Pomegranate Glazed Pork Ribs ($17), 1 Lamb Chop ($9.50), and an Egyptian Mac n' Cheese (made COWBOY - added smoked brisket) ($15). Total came to $41.50. First of all, the space is spacious! There are two areas for eating outside --- and although I never went "inside", I did see a building with people going in-and-out of, I assume that's part of the establishment as well? A good amount of fans to keep you comfortable during your stay which is a nice touch. Let's go to the food: I had to give the mac n' cheese the first try --- I've been disappointed too many times before. LOVED IT! First of all, KG BBQ use shells for their mac, and it's not just "queso" --- its seasoned, has some tomato in it, and when it's made "Egyptian" --- you add that beautiful amount of brisket and sauce which just enhance the whole dish. The ribs were also phenomenal. They were fall off the bone tender, but not fragile in any way. The marinade was amazing, and topped with pieces of pomegranate and served with some spiced onions, it's the COMPLEXITY. Often times with TEXAS BBQ, it gets heavy quick. Having these contrasting yet complimentary flavors just makes you want to eat more! It's a complete sensory experience, visually, smell, and taste. The famous lamb chop was also amazing, and served with a little herb concoction on the side that is again --- needed --- to cut through the richness of the meat and fattiness. I've heard some complaints from food bloggers which is valid: there is a good amount of fat on each of these chops, so you better SAVOR the meat on that chop! It'll be done in a few bites! Only feedback? Food temp. It wasn't cold, but it wasn't hot either. In any case, I was thoroughly pleased by KG BBQ and you should definitely pay a visit!
