After getting off a plane, we stopped by Al-Ameer on the way to downtown Detroit. The timing put us there at about the same time as people were breaking their fast for Ramadan, so the restaurant was quite busy. Despite this, we were able to be seated promptly, and our server was both friendly and efficient. The food, as might be expected from their reputation - was tasty and plentiful. For me, the highlight was a simple plate of roasted baby potatoes. I can't recall the last time that the smell of something being delivered to the table made me so happy, and so eager to dig in. This is THE classic Al-Ameer right here. I prefer this location over the Heights version (which tends to get the most attention). Staff is friendly, the restaurant is clean, and its never too loud at least when I eat here. The menu can be large and intimidating, but it has everything you want and much more. I especially adore their lamb chops and fried potato balls. There are both healthy options and obviously more luxurious ones, so your choices are far from limited. I also highly recommend a fruit cocktail as it serves as both a terrific thirst quencher and a stand alone dessert all at the same time. read more

I got carry out and it was good. I got the boneless chicken, stuffed lamb, fries, rice and hummus. The stuffed lamb was very soft, juicy and was my favorite. The hummus were really good too. The boneless chicken was good, but nothing special. I will go back and try some other things as I had very high hopes. One other thing, the pita bread was the best one I've had. It was so soft and not like some of the hard, paper like pitas you normally get. It's worth me going again and trying whatever the favorites are. My go-to especially when I want to show off high-quality Mediterranean food to out-of-town guests, or need food for a party last minute. Al-Ameer serves delicious pita baked fresh all day, wonderful hummus and baba ghannouj (I thought I didn't like baba ghannouj until I tried theirs), and scrumptious meats. We often get the vegetarian platter and the house special platter - I think each are supposed to serve one but we often have leftovers if two of us order these two items. We occasionally make the 3 hour drive to Dearborn mainly to get our fix of Middle Eastern food. This time we tried Al Ameer. We got our first disappointment 2 minutes into our visit when we were told they dont have Schwarma platters or sandwiches which is a staple for us. Nevertheless we chose other dishes but unfortunately besides the Falafel none of the other items were great. Kabobs were bland, breads were cold by the time they got to us. Lamb chops would have been great but charred a bit too much. Our poor server seemed to be the only one doing the running around while there were atleast 2 who seemed to enjoy seeing him running around. I think one was only seating people not even bringing water. When we asked for some napkins he said our waiter is busy. Prepare for a feast. Generous portions of wonderful food come at a very reasonable price. My wife had the chicken stew with sides of baba ganouj and herbed rice. I had hummus, a salad, and beef kebobs cooked to medium rare perfection. The chicken stew is flavorful and loaded with goodies. The hummus is a nice blob of perfection. Don't neglect to put some olive oil and pepper on it. This place is very popular with families, and there are lots of tables with 6 or 7 people at them. Service is accommodating and friendly. I attended a dinner here with a large group of colleagues and Al-Ameer did an excellent job handling it all! We ordered a variety of entrees and shared them as a table and a few of us ordered our own entrees, too! The staff was kind, efficient and helpful, especially when offering menu suggestions. I didn't know Michigan has long been associated with Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine, but I can understand why. Most of my table ordered the Family Tray #1, which was delightful. It had three tawook, three kabobs, three kafta, shawarma, chicken shawarma, falafel with hummus & baba ghanouge served with rice, fries & salad. I nibbled on a few bites of everything and it was awesome! My favorite was the baba. I also thought it was super cool they offer a premium juice bar. I loved the dolma, the variety of grilled meats shared (all were succulent, juicy and well seasoned). What. A. Feast. Al-Ameer is a James Beard award winning middle eastern restaurant. I had some of my favorite dishes and tried some new ones - this was definitely a meal that I won't soon forget. Here's the grub I got to try: Hummus - This may have been the best hummus I've ever had. SO full of flavor and the complementing pita bread was so fresh and soft. Baba Ghanouge - This was DEFINITELY the best baba I have ever had. Before this meal, I always preferred hummus to baba... now, I'm not so sure. This was one of my favorite parts of the meal. Roasted Baby Potatoes - I enjoyed these way more than I thought I would. They were definitely a great pre-entre snack. Be prepared to eat too many of them. Vegetarian and meat-filled grape leaves - To be honest, I didn't care for the vegetarian grape leaves, bubt the meat filled ones were delightful. I think the contrast in temperature helped to make them more enjoyable. Kebbie with hashwi (raw meat topped with cooked ground meat and onions) - Wow. This was easily the most memorable part of the meal. I had no idea I would enjoy this so much. I don't care for tartare, so I thought that this would be the same. Without the cooked meat and onions on top it would have been a tougher sell for me, but I could have eaten a full plate of this by myself. Family Tray #1 (feeds 4-6 people; lamb and steak kabobs, chicken shawarma, falafel, French fries, rice and salad) - Honestly, by the time we got to this, I was already pretty full. I still nibbled around a bit and everything was great, but everything that came before it was more memorable for me. All in all, I would DEFINITELY recommend Al-Ameer. Inside looks very nice and was comfortable. Unfortunately, the food fell short of expectations. Ordered Tomato Kebbie which tasted like they didn't drain the tomatoes as it had a very watery consistency which made the flavor poor. The lemonade I ordered tasted very chemical and could not even finish it. The eggplant and cauliflower dish I ordered only had a few pieces of each and then a ton of fries. The eggplant was very good but for $14 I expected to receive more than 4 pieces. I've been to quite a few middle eastern restaurants, particularly in the Sterling Heights area and Al-Ameer remains my fave. Came often when I was in undergrad at UofM Dearborn, not so much now as it's kind of out of the way for me. My go to is the Shawarma with rice (beef and lamb seasoned deliciously with so much flavor), hummus, fattoush salad, falafel, and their pita and garlic sauce is the best compared to any other middle eastern restaurant! My husband and I shared the platter for two. In the photos, it showed falafel and kibee with that platter and we did not get any. It was just meat, salad and hummus. Not even any rice! I thought the beef Shawarma was terrible. It had a very gamey taste. The chicken shawarma was probably my favorite meat on the platter but even it was nothing to write home about. If your scour the Internet for the top Middle Eastern restaurants in the Dearborn area this place is almost always in the top 5. That's saying something. Visit this place and you will understand why. Corner location that is easy to find. Plenty of parking around the building is well lit. Lots of seating. Inside is spacious, clean and uncluttered. Staff wears uniforms and are so polite and helpful. All these things are huge if your new to this ethnic dining or not. The menu has so many options. There's lots of typical platters like shawarma and hummus, sandwiches and combinations. We opted for the Al-Ameer Platter for 2. Chicken shawarma, meat shawarma, tawook kabob, and 2 kafta. Served with salad, hummus, and their UNBELIEVABLE bread. We upgraded our hummus to Beruit hummus with peppers and onions for something different. This place must go through a million to-go containers because everyone was walking out the door carrying one. The serving sizes were huge and no matter how much you stuff yourself, there's always something left to eat. The endless bread didn't help! No way I'm leaving anything behind! Our meal, with waters to drink, plus a generous tip and I rolled my fat belly out the door for $40. With so many middle eastern restaurants to visit, I try to mix things up.
