Delicious food and accommodating of food intolerance - in my case gluten. The waiter advised of all menu items that were gluten free and doubled checked a few with the kitchen which is always nice. I came here as a party of two and the decor first off was impressive. The service overall was good, getting the bill was the only challenge. The food really is the highlight and was delicious. We shared the Alaskan crab, wagyu beef tacos, Una, and jidori chicken. All were so good and very flavourful. We also got cocktails - take my to Tokyo and Yasuke sour - both excellently presented and tasted terrific. The cocktail menu is extensive and there are so many fun concoctions. I would definitely return and try sushi - it looks really awesome as I saw a few other tables who ordered rolls. I live close by and had to come try as soon as it opened and Akira Back did not disappoint. There's a separate entrance to the left of the main Bisha hotel entrance. We were greeted by a hostesses in the elevator lobby, went up to the 2nd floor and they gladly took our coats for complementary coat check. The restaurant is dimly lit and felt as if you were in a cave under the sea. I really enjoyed the dark furniture, the stone tables and spotlight above my table for photo taking. Service was very good, the server was friendly, knowledgable of the menu and gave recommendations of popular items and even a bit of history on the inspiration of the dishes. The menu is meant to be shared and for two people, it was recommended to order 4-5. We ended up ordering 5 plus dessert and left still a tad hungry. Now, onto the dishes.. we mostly ordered from the recommended dishes and they were all very unique and creative. Highlights of the meal were the tuna pizza and the waygu tacos. Both these dishes had an interesting mix of flavours and textures. The tuna pizza had a crispy crust with what tasted like an aioli sauce under the tuna. It was unlike anything I've had before and very tasty! Waygu beef taco was really good! Tender ground waygu beef covered with bulbogi sauce encased in a crispy taco shell. If you like bulbogi you'll like this. The hot mess was a roll with avocado and crab topped with poke drizzled with spicy sauce. It was a decent but more so of an average dish compared to the others we tried. Also have to mention that between the dishes, there were frequent cutlery and plate changed which was a nice touch. However, for a fancy restaurant, I would have preferred real chopsticks rather than the disposal kind. We followed with the jidori chicken (the most expensive but also the largest portion of the meal) and the jeju domi ( smallest portion of the meal). The chicken was moist and cooked to perfection topped with crispy skin. The jeju domi, a signature fish was red snapper sashimi with tobiko rolled within infused with citrus flavour and chojang sauce.Realized that I wasn't a huge fan of the fish mixed with citrus but I liked the textures of the fresh fish, the rock salt and the popping tobiko. We finished with the Yuzu citrus dessert which was yuzu curds, merengue, and strawberry gelato. It was a nice tart finish to the meal. Overall the meal was about $155 including tax and tip. Came on a Wednesday night, we had reservations but there seemed to be enough tables to accommodate a few more walk-ins. The ambience of this place is quite nice, it fits in quite well with the dark, luxurious feel that the Bisha Hotel exudes. The service was top notch, my water glass was always full and all the staff were very attentive and friendly. To share we ordered four small dishes: Tuna Pizza, Ab Wagyu Tacos, Rock Shrimp, Wagyu Fried Rice and then four rolls: the Pop Rockin, Hot Mess, Protein and Brother From Another Mother. The Tuna pizza is very thin, different than your typical fish-on-fried-rice-patty type of "sushi pizza" and had a very light yet intense flavour. The Wagyu tacos were also delicious, but very small, only one bite each. The fried rice and shrimp were both good, but nothing special. I reckon they might have been better as an accompaniment for a main such as the Toban Filet Mignon (which a table near us got and it smelled delicious). As for the rolls, my personal favourite and recommendation would be for the Brother From Another Mother. The flavours were very strong and the rolls rests on a giant pool of sesame sauce. Each piece is finished off with a small dollop of fois gras which just makes each bite incredibly rich and flavourful. The Hot Mess was also quite tasty, it was just a bunch of flavours all coming together to a delicious bite. The Protein was much more low-key with the main attraction being different types of fish on each piece, but it was a much more light flavour and relied more on the fish than sauces. The Pop Rockin roll was interesting, because they actually had pop rocks inside the roll which make the experience very unique. However I was not a huge fan of the taste of candy in a sushi roll. For dessert we shared a Matcha Mousse Cake and the Black Sesame Cheesecake. The Matcha one was delicious and actually tasted a bit more like cheesecake to me than the sesame one. To our surprise, the sesame one has more of a "deconstructed" vibe, so the cheesecake parts were actually small perfect cubes. So the portion size was tiny, but it did taste wonderful, very strong with only a subtle tinge of sweetness. The portion sizes here are very small, and most items comes with between 4-8 pieces, so you probably need at least 2-3 items a person if you are sharing. I had very high expectations coming into this and Akira Back is a highly acclaimed in Toronto known for being one of the best restaurants in the city. To my surprise everything tasted just ... okay. At this price range I expect all the flavours and texture of the dishes to sing in harmony and blend well, which wasn't the case for everything. The highly will definitely be the mushroom pizza which was absolutely chef's kiss which started on a high note. We got the appetizer bento because we wanted to try a little bit of everything but thankfully we got this instead of ordering individually because not everything tasted amazing. Their sushi selection was just sad, the one we had was doused in sauce and I would've honestly enjoyed a local sushi takeout restaurant instead. Absolutely amazing! I would say this is probably one of my top 10 favorite restaurants in Toronto. The menu is inspired from the chef's childhood. For example, the chef loved to eat candy as a child, so he created a sushi roll that included pop rocks! The plates are also beautifully designed and hand painted by his mother. This is not only an amazing culinary experience, but an artistic experience too! Memorable dishes that you must try: 1) Truffle Bomb Croquette (5/5) - if you enjoy the taste of truffle, this will be a dream come true! 2) Tuna Pizza (5/5) - the flavors are so complex and work so well together. Was just here today (02/13/17) and the food was amazing but the service could use a little work but considering this is a newer restaurant I would let it slide, oh and the food was amazing. I made a reservation for 6:30 to celebrate valentines days but I arrived shortly after they opened to drop off a little surprise for my girlfriend, I'm pretty happy that they tried to accommodate me with that considering I did not inform them ahead of time I was going to be doing so. When we arrived at the restaurant we were asked if we wanted to check our jackets which was nice! After being seated we were given menu and asked what kind of water we wanted. The server did not rush us what so ever to order and only came to us when we put the menus down. We ordered the tuna tacos wagyu tacos wagyu fried rice salmon aburi brother from another mother roll and the 14oz ribeye The tuna tacos were great as the tuna was fresh BUT the wagyu tacos that came promptly after stole the show, this is a must order when coming here. The wagyu fried rice was good and reminded me of teppanyaki style fried rice (a fair warning that it comes in a individual size bowl). I was a little confused when the salmon came as I was expecting pressed/torched sushi but that's my fault for not going thru the menu properly. The brother from another mother roll is also another must order item as this also stood out almost as much as the wagyu tacos! The steak came last but it was cooked to perfection (medium rare) BUT the sauce was a little weird in my girlfriends opinion, I thought it wasn't too bad could've went for something else though. Now to the service, I asked to have the gifts at the table upon arrival which to my surprise they weren't, wasn't a big deal. The service of the dinner was very choppy food came in very slowly in the beginning, we would finish something and would have to wait for another to come one at a time, it did pick up by the end but we were felt pretty hungry in the beginning :(, again it is a new restaurant so give them time and their service will match the quality of the food sooner or later :). Its unfortunate that they did not fulfil the way I wanted my surprise but all and all it was a wonderful experience and my girlfriend was still very happy with everything :). Came here tonight and had an excellent evening. Service was impeccable and the waitress consistently asked how I was doing. I sat at the sushi bar and was greeted by the chefs which only added to the fantastic service already provided. Regarding the food, it was on point in terms of creativity and freshness. I ordered the tuna pizza, which I had doubts on, but it was delicious - the crust is the star. I was also able to try the Hokkaido scallop and the tuna with mustard miso sauce (I think?) thanks to the chefs recommendation and both dishes were very balanced. The botan Ebi was also very sweet and well presented. As far as the desert, I ordered the magic egg and it was very light which helped end the night nicely. It looked spot on like an egg! . The restaurant itself is gorgeous and I'm not surprised that I overheard it mentioned that it's being nominated (and won?) an award for it. You know you're paying a premium just from the look of the space. We sat at the chef's table and tried their omakase menu which consisted of 6 courses including dessert ($90/pp). Although it was suggested that we add an additional dish we decided not too and was still full at the end of the meal. I wouldn't say there was any dishes to write home about but their truffle bomb croquette really makes you feel like you're trying the highest price point on "Worth It" of something! They have a unique selection of cocktails as well. My boyfriend and I celebrated New Years 2020 here. Let me just say that the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because our reservation was at 10 but we weren't able to get a table until 1035pm. Thankfully the food made up for it. It was a set menu for NYE for 140$ a person. I was hesitant at first because nice restaurants usually don't give you a lot of food but we were quite full by the end. My favourite items that we received was the mushroom pizza, to die for! The tuna half of it was good but not insane. The sea food platter had the best scallops I've ever had. My next favourite was the salmon tataki. I literally have not had anything so good before. Get that!! The rest of the food was amazing but those were my favourites. The crab legs were a hit and the steak was cooked to Perfection. Akira Back has been always one of the top restaurants I wanted to try as all my friends have hyped about it. Our favourite dish of the night is the Crispy Octopus where the meat was tender and crispy on the outside, paired with two excellent sauce ! Highest recommend trying that ! As well, the sea urchin pieces were definitely the ones to try! One of the sweetest and freshest ones I have had ever and we even got two servings of it! However, the protein roll was rather not up to our tasting. The crab meat was very overpowering and it made the sashimi on top hard to taste. The fish was really fresh though when we ate it separately. Overall, the service was amazing and they even surprised my boyfriend with a mini dessert for his birthday. Based on other reviews, we ordered the Tuna/Mushroom Pizza, Yellowtail Serrano, Wagyu Tacos, Alaskan King Crab and the Miso Black Cod. The pizza, yellowtail and crab were my personal favourites. Tuna/Mushroom Pizza: Raw Tuna and Mushroom on a thin cracker like crust, with mayonnaise and truffle oil. 10/10, is a definite must try! The flavours work really well together and is a great starter to the meal. Yellowtail Serrano: Sashimi, in yuzu/soy flavoured sauce. 9/10. For someone that's not a fan is sashimi, I was so surprised on how soft and non-fishy the yellowtail was! The sauce was a bit sweet for me though. Wagyu Tacos: Solid 6. The tacos were good, but I felt like I could have found the same somewhere else. The tacos had just the right amount of sauce and the size was perfect as well. Alaskan King Crab: 6 pieces! Which was more than I expected. There was a good amount of meat given in each piece and a hint of spice as well, which was really nice. 8/10. Miso Black Cod: I was not a fan of this dish. The fish had a really sweet flavour and creamy texture on top which I didn't like. However, my friend really loved it and considered it one of the top dishes we tried, so it may just be a matter of preference. The servers were told that it was my birthday and wrote happy birthday on the plate when we ordered dessert, they also told us it was on the house when we received our bill, which was really nice! The yuzu dessert was a bit too citrusy and could have used more of the gelato, but it was still a good dish. Overall, I had an amazing visit and would recommend it to my friends and anyone looking to have a nice dinner. Definitely a place I would come back to! read more

Akira Back is a Japanese fusion restaurant owned by a Michelin star chef. It has a few locations around the world. It recently opens in downtown Toronto. First off, upon arrival, grand looking staircase going to second floor. The restaurant design with the black color tone, which gives the feeling of high end dining. We ordered 5 courses including Doji Domi, Crispy rice, scallop kiwi, baked Alaska crab leg, and waygu Don. Let's start of with Crispy rice. Thick piece of tuna on top of crispy rice. The mixture of sauce and the tuna and rice are wonderful, very memorable with wow factor. Second one is the scallop kiwi. Never heard of or trying mixing raw scallop with kiwi slices, but somehow they are so match when the scallop and kiwi are mix together in my mouth. However, the wow factor starts to fall off when doji domi and baked alsaka crab leg come. Both dishes are good, but nothing like wow factor anymore. The final Waygu Don is the big disappointment to me. It is small relatively to the price, and the most important thing is the Waygu is a disaster. It is chewy, no taste and a slice of fatty meat, they are not melt in my mouth, in fact, I cannot really swallow the Waygu at all. Only plus for this course is the presentation. I wish they can address this main course. I really want them to get improve next time when I try again. I didn't order any special signature rolls, but I will come back to get a second try. read more

I had made a reservation for 1 while traveling and agreed to sit at the bar even though I asked for a table. The food was good, service was bad, but it was an otherwise uneventful meal. 30 minutes after leaving I get a text and a call from some guy saying that the bartender says I didn't pay my bill. It was truly such a bizarre accusation given that I was the only one sitting at the bar, so it's not like the bartender was so busy she wouldn't have remembered me paying. Not sure if she truly forgot or if there was something else going on here, but it really soured the whole experience for me. Extra annoying because I had tipped 25%. read more

The first thing I noticed was the decor, very sophisticated chic, perfect for special occasions. We came here for a team dinner so we got to try a bit of everything and I have to say, I love love love every single dish. We started with a tuna and truffle mushroom pizza, perfect blend of textures with just the right amount of crunch. Next, we had the wagyu beef taco and salmon sashimi, super tasty and salmon just melts in your mouth. For our third course, we had the Alaskan king crab and seared scallops. I'm not a fan of scallops usually but I ate my fair share of scallops here. For our fourth course, we had eel and sushi poke roll. My vote goes to the eel roll for taste and the name - "brother from another mother"! Our main was miso cod and waygu short ribs, the cod was delish but I didn't get to try the short ribs b/c someone ate my share of short ribs! Can you believe that?!?! It's like stealing lunches from the office fridge! #Shame. Anyways, I'm sure I would have given a thumbs up if I had taste it. Had my first experience at Akira Back last night. It was a ray of sunshine in a otherwise extremely rainy day. I went with a foodie friend of mine who heard rave reviews and I was hesitant at first due to the price and portion sizes of the food. However I was pleasantly surprised. Atmosphere - the restaurant is one door south of the Bisha Hotel on Blue Jays Way (how fitting as yesterday was the Blue Jays Home opener) on the second floor. There is an elevator for those with accessibility needs and a GORGEOUS golden staircase that is Instagram worthy. Inside the restaurant the decor is modern with hints of tradition. A theme that continues into the food. It was quiet when we arrived at 6:45pm but definitely got packed and louder around 8pm as lager groups arrived. Service - the hostess is lovely and made genuine effort to converse with us and even remembered us at the end of the night when we picked up our coats. Our server was phenomenal; made excellent suggestions. Did not rush us and was always attentive. He even walked me to the restroom as it was my first time there. Food - what can I say? It definitely lived up to its hype. We sampled through 4 signature cocktails and all were delicious. The Sakitini was hands down my favourite: tart, lightly sweetened and very refreshing. We ordered the famous tuna pizza. It came on a crumbly base drizzled in truffle oil and salt and pepper. It was divine. Next we had the fried octopus with two kinds of poached Asian pear. Great flavours and textures but very small portions as it was the equivalent of 1 tentacle. I had the waygu fried rice and it was a decent portion and well made. A must try side dish if you have a hearty appetite. For rolls we had the hot mess roll. Tasty but nothing that blew me away. The desserts however were fantastic. Do order the matcha cheesecake and I really could have had 2 portions to myself. Will it be a regular spot that I come to? Probably not as the prices are a but high. But Would I come back for special occasions and the infrequent girls night outs? Absolutely! I liked their taco appetizer as well, although it tasted more Korean than Japanese. Dessert was really great too. Service was truly amazing. We were feeling quite full and was trying to decide whether to skip dessert, our server was encouraging us to get dessert so we went for it. I think the issue was the fixed menu. Typically I would just order more to compensate but didn't have the option because of the Valentines Day menu. I understand that it's a busy night for the restaurant but it felt too much like an assembly line. Everyone did their job but no one went above and beyond to make it a great experience. Akira Back is a Japanese and Korean restaurant located at the Bisha Hotel and is one of those swanky restaurants where even the wallpaper looks like it cost a pretty penny. Helmed by a Michelin Star chef, we already had pretty high expectations walking in. Everything was decorated to a T and we marveled over every inch of this decadently decorated dark interior that's perfect for a romantic date night or a birthday celebration. We were seated near the front of the restaurant but we could see straight through to the back where there's an open kitchen with all the chefs working away. I got a Lychee Life (non-alcoholic) while we perused the menu. There was such a large variety of delicious sounding dishes to chose from that it was hard to narrow it down. To start we had the scallop with kiwi. I've never though of adding kiwi to scallops but they actually compliment each other really well. The scallops were fresh and the overall dish was light and yummy. Next we tried the yellowtail serrano with citrus soy which was also nice. We also got the tuna pizza which I would highly recommend! This was such a delicious dish. We thought it would have rice on the bottom but instead they laid thin pieces of tuna over a thin slice of bread with truffle oil sandwiched in between. Still thinking about this one. Our waiter recommended that we get the truffle 'bomb' croquette with shrimp, sea urchin and caviar which was one of his favourites. He said that it was meant to be eaten in one bite but some people struggled because of the size. So we envisioned really large croquettes but they were TINY. Who couldn't fit that in their mouth? Except a baby. For our mains we got the waygu don with a lightly poached egg. I wasn't impressed with the quality of the waygu but the rice was delicious. We also got two of the recommended rolls, Brother from Another Mother and Show Me The Roll. We all thought SMTR was really delicious and flavorful but everyone felt like the BFAM roll was too dry because most of the ingredients are deep fried and it kind of stuck to the back of your throat. To end the meal we got the black sesame cheese cake and yuzu citrus for desert. Both were good but quite microscopic. I was so disappointed they didn't have the magic egg anymore! I really wanted to try that one but apparently they won't be bringing that back. Overall I really enjoyed the ambience and the great service. Some of the dishes were better than other and the rice here was fantastic. But I also felt like I could have had equally delicious dishes at a lower price point somewhere else. read more

This place definitely lives up to its eponymous hype. I booked a early reservation for a Monday night, and had the entire place to ourselves. Walking up the steps across its golden stairs really heightened the grand entrance feeling. I highly recommend sitting by the bar area, as it lets you watch the prep work and food being cooked. Our server Evan was very helpful and friendly with his service, recommending various food items and which cocktails to try, and attended to every single aspect of our dining experience. The service alone earns a solid 5-stars. The wagyu tacos and bluefin tuna pizza are definitely 100% must-trys. While the meat itself is not as great as the name might imply, they were solid tacos with a great mix of hardshell and tangy sauced mince beef. The pizza however was absolutely delicious. The tuna is flown in every night, and the fish is comparable in freshness as what you might find in a restaurant in Japan. Their special sushi rolls are a terrific option too. One of my favourite spots for Japanese food !! Must get dishes: - tuna pizza (4/5) -wagyu tacos (3.5/5) small bite comes in 4. Couldn't really taste the wagyu as it was minced. -truffle bomb croquette(4.5) small bite with uni ! -grilled Alaskan king crab (5/5) bomb!! Must try, crab melts in your mouth - brother from another mother (4/5) drool worthy presentation and taste ! Also tried the ribeye with wasabi sauce, honestly can probably pass for what it is. This place, the service (Josh was our server and he was very cute... polite, I meant polite) the atmosphere, the desserts, and the food was amazing. I wasn't drunk, so I am attaching pictures. Absolutely fantastic! Yelp's been helpful trying to decide which items to try. However, I had hard time finding what people get when they order Omakase - which is not always the same of course. I decided to go for Omakase as it had 2 of 3 items I wanted to try anyways and the deal gets sweeter - I got 7 dishes in total for $90. 4/5 - Tuna / mushroom pizza. Interesting dish with nice flavours and crispy crust which was a nice surprise. 5/5 - Salmon tataki. Very fresh fish and nice, spicy sauce. Excellent dish. 4/5 - White fish sashimi - solid dish, fresh fish 4.5/5 - Crispy white fish with tartar sauce - very interesting. It's almost like fish and chips fish, but next level freshness. Tartar sauce had nice lemony zing to it. Delicious 5/5 - Nigiri - white fish, salmon, tuna, scallop. I felt like I was back in Japan! This was maybe the freshest tasting fish I've tried outside Japan. The rice started falling apart right after picking it up which means it was perfect 4.5/5 - Miso black cod. Delicious dish and good flavours. 5/5 - Chocolate dessert. I didn't catch the name of this dessert but it was served in a tiny Espresso cup and had layers of very delicious chocolate. Wow. Akira Back is what I expect from fine dining. Every dish was either very good or excellent. Service was attentive and fortunately, not pretentious. The waitress was helpful and the entire restaurant is just very classy. Will be back to try items I missed on my first visit. read more

My expectations were pretty high given the amount of positive reviews the restaurant has received. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed, and definitely reflects the price you pay for your meal. The food however is really hit or miss. There were some dishes which I really enjoyed like the Tuna pizza and Kim chi fried rice. On the other hand they have a bunch of rolls which I thought they tried too hard to be unique which consisted of overpowering flavours or strange combinations. Expect food portions to be very small for this type of dining. Service was OK for us, our server was pretty attentive at keeping our glasses full during our meal. I guess this place is worth a try but I think there's much better options for the price you pay. read more

Decided to try this fancy little restaurant out in downtown. When we walked in the vibe was a little dark but a nice date night like setting. Our waiter greated us and recommended a whole slew of dishes, which included the truffle , tuna pizza, uni croquettes, a few rolls and the wagyu tacos. The truffle pizza came out first and wow I wish they had served the pizza last as this was the best dish of the night. For around 20$ it was phenomenal, the taste was flavor blasting. The wagyu tacos were tiny little bite sized tacos (4) which were good. The rolls were a tad small and felt a bit expensive for what I was getting, nothing to special here. The uni was nice and fresh, the croquette came with 3 pieces and although it was good, i dont think it was nessesary worth the money. The two highly noted things at Akira was the truffle tuna pizza and the service from the waiter. read more

I came here with a group of my girlfriends for a birthday. Every dish we ordered did not disappoint. Some of my favourites included the wagyu tacos, tuna pizza, truffle bomb croquette, miso black cod, and seared scallop. But to be honest, everything we ordered was delicious with the exception of the uni tempera which was a bit bland. However, their service was top notch and all the staff were so friendly. One of the hostesses even helped us get a booth at the bar downstairs (Mister C bar room). Definitely will be recommending Akira Back! read more

Thanks for my birthday dinner.. looks like I picked it up from the garbage. With the pandemic a lot has changed and we are all trying to adjust. I'm just going to make this short and sweet. Does this picture below look like a $100 meal? Well it was and also my birthday dinner. How do you disrespect customers who are supporting you during these tough times like this? This looks like take out from a mediocre sushi restaurant. You charge the same price but this is how you treat your customers and serve them with this? Even if its take out, I've seen small regular sushi restaurants put in more effort in their presentation and the way they serve customers who order take out, that is the least you can do to show your appreciation to people who support you. Like really.. this doesnt even look like its worth $40. Im embarrassed for you guys. Is this something you would post on your website or social media? Because this is what you're actually serving people. Taste : meh save money and just go to a decent sushi restaurant, they'll appreciate your business more. read more

Great seafood spot. Korean Japanese fusion dishes gorgeously presented. The atmosphere is hip. I have a bias towards this place because it's in the residence I.e it is super convenient.
