Went in for lunch- the only table in the restaurant. Ordered two rolls, one of which was served with a long black HAIR inside. Kindly told the server who was also the sushi chef, not a huge deal but certainly going to let them know. He said absolutely nothing, no apologies.. put a glove on his hand and took that individual piece away from my plate without a word. Went behind the sushi bar- I assumed to remake the food, prepare another? Nope! He instead sat down at another dining table and did nothing. Never came back to check on the food, apologize, anything?? We were paid no attention though we were the only people there. I had to inquire about the check- surely he would subtract that roll from our total- nope again! Full price. Not a single apology or ANY customer service at all. Will never ever return. tried here since I was looking for a sushi place I had yet to try. i will say this the service is rather lukewarm, but friendly enough. i order two special rolls since of the discount they give on the weekdays. The waterfront rolls were good, all the fish was fresh and great value for all the pieces. Starting off with the positive, because I truly dislike writing less than positive reviews: the sushi tasted great. My avocado cucumber roll was fresh and delicious (yeah, I know it's basic but so much could go wrong with that. I've had lousy ones before with unripened avocado and rice that's too sour) and my guy marveled over how good his lobster and rainbow rolls were (marveled because everything else was so... off as you soon shall see). If this were a takeout order, the review would likely be one star stronger. Also appreciated, the view of the boats docked on the Hudson. We were able to get a patio seat as it was around 5pm on a Saturday. All we wanted was a couple of drinks and snacks to enjoy the view. I'm glad it was a quick visit, though, because unfortunately we didn't have a great experience here, mainly due to the service. To be fair, our waitress admitted she was new, but I don't feel she could have possibly have even been trained as a waitress anywhere, no less here. She had no idea what anything was on the menu and kept asking us to point out what we wanted, including Prosecco and Sapporo, which I believe are pretty common drinks. There's not much for vegans or vegetarians here at all, other than the aforementioned avocado cucumber roll and I also saw a sweet potato roll on the menu. Otherwise, the menu is sushi and a small selection of basic cooked Japanese dishes. The can of Sapporo was brought out warm. Another rookie mistake. My guess is that someone refilled the beer cooler and didn't rotate, but our waitress should have held the can and known immediately that it was too warm to serve. Although we were literally the only customers in the place, our waitress was not attentive and we had to pretty much wave her over from inside for anything. Like the bill. Due to it being a hand written bill rather than from a computer system, it was all completely wrong. We were charged for a lobster roll tail ($20) rather than the lobster roll ($15). I was charged for an avocado roll and a cucumber roll, instead of 1 avocado cucumber roll. She kindly fixed it, sort of, but we waved her back and told her it was still added wrong. She said it was because there was tax and showed us $15 tax on a 50 dollar bill. By this time, we had our phones out to add the bill because it was so off, we couldn't trust her. She kept apologizing but I kept thinking of how we normally don't even check the bill, give our credit card and leave, which is sort of what we did here before realizing we were owed money after our card was already run, so the owner handed us a $5 bill from the register. This all felt so weird and uncomfortable. I thought back to my right out of college days as a brand new waitress at a restaurant named Akasaka (not making this up). I had never waited on tables. I was unfamiliar with Japanese food and the menu was huge. I worked my ass off to learn an extensive menu and an unfamiliar culture as well, being that the customer base was mostly Japanese and there are different serving customs with people from Japan. It truly taught me to appreciate a new culture and the opportunity to learn so much about food (as well as get along with a very scary but ultimately awesome old school Japanese chef who was tough on me at first but ended up being so kind and amazingly even made sure to cook me things that were vegan). I think you can make the most of your opportunities in whatever job you take or need to take to pay your bills. Why am I telling you this? I can't excuse lazy attitudes. This new waitress simply wasn't trying at all. It's a disrespect to the restaurant to take a job and then dial it in. And some might say it's pretty unfair that a place is judged according to poor service but here it is. We paid around 55 dollars on snacks and drinks, not terrible given the waterfront location. I wrote a review before but since I couldn't find it on yelp, I'm rewriting it again I visited this restaurant with my daughter and my grandson with three of us. I should've known when I walked in that it was empty, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, since I had been there prior to Covid, I have to be very honest with you. We were very dissatisfied, especially with the food that's the reason why we went there. We ordered chicken teriyaki, and the chicken seem to have been frozen defrosted and cooked too thick to chew and dry the owner, which was the cook was alone and maybe that was too much for him , but he never once checked to see if we were happy with the food. The only thing that he said was good was the water we should've known better now I have to say that the shumai were delicious but the rolls they were horrible also. read more

Went in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and it was not busy. Outdoor seating available, air conditioning, simple decor, parking available and $20 min for use of credit/debit card. The food was great. Lots of appetizers, special and classic rolls, and classic entrees. No bento boxes though, or lunch specials. HOWEVER, there is discount if you go during the week, I believe. I take the quality of my sushi very seriously, so I was very happy to discover that this restaurant definitely makes the cut. It's a great place to go and relax by the water while having a nice snack with friends. I am a sushi grazer (I like to order one dish at a time, share with friends, and eat slowly) so I was pleased when the owner/sushi chef accommodated our style. He's a quiet man, but very kind once you get to know him, and man does he make a good spicy tuna roll. They don't have gluten free soy sauce, but you're welcome to bring your own. The WORST experience in a long, long, long, time! Sushi chef is a rude man. Lobster roll had been left out, dried out horrid mess that I could not eat. Told the chef that he could take it away. And he did, he said nothing! NOTHING! My partner's meal was the same; rice was a clump of sticky and uncooked rice. She couldn't eat it and took it to the counter where she told the chef. He said NOTHING. We waited for a bill...it never came and when we went in to pay at the counter, he showed us a bill, handwritten, and said that he took off ten dollars....NOTHING would get me in this hellhole again! My husband and I took a drive up to Newburgh on a gorgeous warm November day. We were looking forward to outdoor dining for lunch with a river view. Upon arrival in the area I spotted Akasaka and was excited to enjoy a sushi lunch outdoors which is unusual. Most sushi restaurants don't have enjoyable seating outdoors with a great view to boot! We were offered a wonderful table very socially distanced from the other. Honestly , the other tables could be spread out a little more, they were too close together. The waitress informed us that they do not offer a lunch menu, which we were disappointed about but managed to find something we could enjoy that wasn't expensive for lunch. We started with a large saki and ordered a maki combo and an additional roll. The combo came with miso soup and my husband also ordered an additional soup for himself. The combo gave you a chance to select from classic rolls. Mine included a yellowtail roll, Alaska roll and shrimp tempura roll. Soup was delicious and 2 of the 3 rolls were also quite good. The shrimp tempura roll, usually my favorite, was very disappointed. The shrimp tempura part of the roll was either reheated or overcooked. It ruined the roll, it was dried out and after trying to eat two pieces of the roll I left the rest behind, it was inedible. My husband also agreed. Everything else was good. We stopped here on the way back from our hike. We were a group of 10 and had to call to say we were running late, which the restaurant had no problem with. When we got there, our table was set and ready for us. Two or three people weren't impressed/pleased with what they order, but I loved my food. I have a habit of sticking to the things I like. I came here with some friends after a hiking trip on Father's Day. Majority of the restaurants nearby were full booked so last minute change, my friends and I came here. There was about 12 of us. We made reservation ahead of time. Our seats were ready when we got there. We ordered some appetizers and entrees. Unfortunately majority of us were not impressed with our sushi and our entrees. My friend got the curry rice entree dish and she was not happy with it. I got the tempura udon dish, which looked good but for $15, I was not blown away with it.I ordered the spicy salmon ($6).The sushi was definitely lacking. Walked in with my husband to have a little sushi lunch, we usually go to Iron Chef or Yobo but we wanted a little more ambiance so we popped into here. The man was smoking a cigarette in the restaurant, you could smell it as soon as you walked in, it didn't bother me so much since we were sitting out on the patio. It took a decent 15 minutes to even get a drink. When we ordered our food to took another 20 minutes to get out some spicy tuna rolls. You could visually see that he mixed last nights old tuna with the new tuna, the color change in the fish was startling to say the least. I even took a bite of an avocado roll that was brown on the inside. I spit everything out and sent it back to the kitchen. We ate nothing but the drinks and soup that was given to us, so when I explained to the man that I was only paying for the food I ate (drinks and soup) he threw a hissy fit like I've never seen. I was informed by a fellow worker that no longer works here, that they had mold, roaches, rats, and he had to soak a ladle in bleach for over an hour just to get the grime off . The chef leaves everything out, not refrigerated and cross contaminates everything. If you have allergies: please stay away! Akasaka: Hidden Gem of the Newburgh Waterfront Nestled in between the more prestigious and expensive restaurants lies the oasis that is Akasaka. First off, this place is super affordable. You won't get more food at this price anywhere else on the waterfront. Second, the sushi isn't as bad as others say. Pretty solid. No it's not a Michelin star rated joint, but it has character and heart. The bathroom is really big and nice. I feel happy here. The outdoor back view is gorgeous, and they even have a fun cat that comes around. Not all that glitters is gold, and sometimes that which doesn't shine has a heart of gold. We had the sliced octopus appetizer, the Akasaka love boat, and we split the banana tempura and green tea ice cream for dessert. I have been a customer of Akasaka since they opened for business, and I used to think they had stellar Asian fusion cuisine. Their service always was kind, welcoming, and warm with the owner present. Within the last year or two though, I believe their quality has taken a huge plunge, along with customer service. The last several times I've been there the food just wasn't the same. I have always ordered the spider roll (soft shell crab, avocado, cucumber, masago, and eel sauce) and I recently noticed they have made the roll smaller--and the soft shell crab has been completely burned through and super salty every time. Each time I try to give this business another chance, I'm disappointed in another way, like a couple of items missing from my takeout bag. I hate to say only negative aspects of Akasaka, so one positive is that their sushi and sashimi is very fresh and tastes good, and the place is always sparkling clean. Please bring back old Akasaka! Super fresh sushi& one of the cleanest sushi bars I have ever seen. I liked their fantastic roll, which was smoky and buttery eel and avocodo over a white tuna roll. Their deep fried shrimp rolls compliment everything well. As for drinks, the Black Creek Sake and White Wall sake worked well, which have rice and melon flavors, that opened up to reveal hints of banana and other fruity notes. Over the months, they have been using more gluten free ingredients. Can't wait to see what's more in store this summer. They have delicious rolls, both raw and cooked for my friends who don't like raw fish. Enjoyed their Being from the city, its hard to find satisfying eats and a diverse waitstaff. we were the only table in the place, and now we know why. seated on the patio we ordered a bottle of wine and one of the wine glasses had red lipstick all over it, we had to get up and go back inside to get a clean one, and the owner/waiter didn't pour any of our wine, we had to do it ourselves. the service was very slow, the vegetables were mostly overcooked, with the exception of the potatoes which were undercooked. we told the owner (who was also our waiter) and he said and did nothing. everything for our non-sushi meals was cooked/warmed up in the microwave - we watched him do it from the patio. first time ever that we left no tip and will never go back. go next door to cafe pitti, which we often do - it's way, way better! read more

Oh my goodness I'm delightfully suprised when all the courses of a meal turn out wonderful. The iced unsweetened green tea had just the right amount of earthiness without being bland. My mom and I split a curry dish and sushi. The sushi was quality was a steal at $5 for a simple roll and upwards for the more expensive $10-$15. The curry was good but had too many potatoes for my liking, the sauce itself was delisious. But if you go, my one tip is to get the banana tempura dessert. Split it with someone, or two, or even three. It's worth holding off on the appetizer if you think you'll be too full. read more
