Hubby drives pass this place several times in the morning and I found a reel online talking about it so we decided to give it a try. I made reservations to try their one of their two choices of omakase and picked the 21 pieces set ($175/person). They called to ask about any allergies and to see which omakase set we would like, 16 pieces or the 21 pieces. My fat ass went for 21 and that was too much food (if you're a big eater this would be the better choice). We were greeted with a smile and seated quickly at the bar. It's a small little gem of a place with Nobu-ish feel (with brighter lighting and better prices with the similar quality). Service was great and the quality and taste was even better! The mentaiko pasta and the chawanmushi were absolutely flavorful and delicious! Definitely a place to come again as a date night or with family and friends! read more

First time trying this place after it changed ownership. The remodeling is pretty cute -- Scandinavian, retro, mid-century modern, tone-on-tone, very neutral. I do think they ran out of budget on the floor. It would look nicer if they redid it to match the color of the wood; the dark tone feels a little out of place. But that's a minor detail. My friend was blown away by the pasta with ikura -- it was out of this world. It's a little rich for my taste, but I really appreciate how al dente the pasta is. The sriracha has its own twist. The rice is marinated. It's a fusion take -- really interesting. I'd say it's great for people who want a little twist, but if you're coming with an expectation of traditional Japanese, this might not be the right place for you. The dessert was pretty good. We got the matcha crème brûlée, which is a little more liquidy than a normal crème brûlée, and the ice cream, which was very rich. Overall, the flavors lean rich -- definitely something you can pair well with a soda or a cocktail. But the experience is nice. The food presentation is fun. The waitress was really sweet. Each of us got three entrées and a few appetizers, and it averaged around $70 per person with tip. A solid weekend dinner. read more

Came to the place with family for dinner and we got sat down rite away there wasnt any waiting. We order some tempura, sushi mix plate, miso soup, and some rolls. It was good and the taste of the sushi was fresh and delicious. Service was ok, waiter and waitress asking and talking loud, its like were not deaf. They should lower there tone of voice but I can understand why, because music was loud and you can hear watever across the room talking. Ambience here has a couple of chairs and tables they also have a bar place to sit. Its a really small place and it gets really crowded after 7pm. The price is think its alittle high end. read more

We used to love coming here and always get the sushi premium set. Our recent meal made me question coming back. Found a fish bone in one of the nigiri. Although they were nice in giving us two complimentary nigiri, the quality of yesterday's meal was also lower than what we previously experienced. There were some good bites like the uni and yellowtail but the other fish like salmon was not as flavorful. read more

TLDR: steak was underwhelming. Sushi and sashimi are their strength, but rolls are pricey for the portion size, small parking lot - recommend street parking on busy days My second time at Akami, but since I couldn't eat sushi this visit, I decided to try the rib eye steak entrée. The tofu, bean sprouts, and seaweed sides were good, but the steak itself was disappointing -- it wasn't seared and looked barely cooked, even though the waiter said it was well done. We also shared a combination tempura and crab salmon roll. The tempura was a bit too salty for my taste, and the rolls, while good, were very small (6 pieces) for the $20-25 price tag. Akami is best known for its sushi and sashimi, and I can see why. They seem to shine more in the evening -- during lunch, the fish didn't taste as fresh. Service is friendly and attentive, and prices for sushi combos are reasonable. Overall, I'd skip the steak and rolls, but would come back specifically for their sushi or sashimi next time. read more

The fish was reasonably priced and decent. I like the clean interior, and their service ware was beautiful. We came here for lunch to celebrate my bday. The place started filling up closer to 1pm. So this was my first time doing Omakase. Wow what an experience. I will start off to say that the service was fantastic. They really take care of you . We ordered some sake and waited for the 6 course chef's choice meal to start coming out. As you can see from the pictures the presentation was fantastic. All the fish had such good flavor and buttery goodness. Such amazing flavors. I for the life of me cannot remember anything that we got in particular but all I know is that it was delicious. I know I did try some stuff that I normally wouldn't have but all tasted fantastic. Service was just top notch , they saw our sake cup was empty they would come over and refill for us. WOW! It's a tiny place and started to fill up after they opened at 11:30am. We had reservations for 11:30am at the bar. Does seem to be a very popular spot definitely would go back and try some other stuff. Had a great time hanging with My close friend . Will be back. Enjoy !!!! read more

Tucked in a small plaza on Live oak is Akami sushi with a homey comfortable vibe. Sat at the bar twice with my first experience trying the deluxe sashimi. The portions are good. The fish is fresh and thick pieces. So I was really excited to give it another try for other stuff that they have to offer. The overall service is friendly and they can't refill waters or ask you if you need anything else. Went back again for dinner this time and order their special Kaisen Don along with a vegetable tempura. The tempura is decent with good portions. The Kaisen Don however, turn out to be a disappointment for me personally. I hardly ate a fourth of the bowl. The sauce that you see right on the top with an egg yolk inside is the drizzling sauce for the Kaisen Don. The sauce is very overpowering. It even has a little bit of more a sweeter side tone to it that I don't think really compliments the overall seafood inside the Kaisen Don ask the Kai and Don already contains quite a lot of Ikura, which is already salty, and the crab creaminess is completely covered by the sauce so you cannot taste the sweetness of the crab. I would probably opt for a lighter sauce version or even just a regular ponzu sauce to drizzle over it might be enough to highlight the fish taste, and the freshness of the Kaisen Don. For very similar price I would probably recommend getting the sashimi deluxe version instead of the Kaisen Don. You actually get more pieces of thick cut fish instead of in the Kaisen. It's all diced fish pieces so cannot tell if those fishes are the leftovers from sashimi slices. Either fish is still really fresh, but I personally would recommend the sashimi over the Don. The chef at the sushi bar did notice I wasn't really eating my Kai symptoms so they asked what happened and I explained to them that the sauce is really strong and overpowering. It's very hard to finish the bowl. I am definitely not requesting for an entire replacement of the meal but instead I was just given a vanilla ice cream as a apology so slightly disappointing for spending $60 I believe plus tax and tip for something that I didn't even eat a quarter of. I would still give this restaurant another try for some other food or maybe just go back for their Sashimi deluxe or even their Chirashi bowl. Overall, I would give it a 3.5 star with the two experiences that I had dining there. Hope that would change next time I go~ read more

How have I lived here for so long and never tried this sushi restaurant! I'm almost hesitant to post a review because I don't want to give this hidden gem away- but that would be wrong. Arcadia has a few sushi restaurants but this is surely my favorite now. Fish was super fresh and good, I would get the premium set again 100%. Initially I told my husband I wasn't hungry and he could have my leftovers but it was so good I ate it all myself! Ambulance is great, clean, well kept. Small restaurant but I don't mind it. The restaurant is in a small plaza in Arcadia. First time here. Few times for others. The restaurant opens at 5 pm. We arrived there 5 minutes before 5 and the line already started. I ordered ice green tea. It's better than others since it made fresh, not from bottle. Also ordered a dish called Rock & Roll and a soft shell crab hand roll. Ate all up. Very good especially the sushi rice. Others ordered Kaisen Futomaki, Blossom Roll, and a dish called Mentaiko Mazemen with Truffle (see picture). It's an interesting dish. It's a noodle marinated with some kind of sauce which tasted deliciously. One of my favorite dish. Servers are attentive and friendly. Price a little high but the quality is good. read more

I love the atmosphere. The staff is friendly and super attentive. Everytime our tea was half way done, they would come by to add more water. Everything was so beautifully presented. It's something I would expect from Japan but I get it here. The prices are very well priced for the quality that you get. My favorite is the premium sashimi set and the black cod set. The icecream was amazing too like a malted white rabbit candy but less sweet. It's addicting. The only thing is to come early as the parking lot is small so you snag a spot and the Wasabi is from the tub and not real fresh grated ones. The soy sauce is sweet and not just salty like Kikoman The most impressive thing is when they closed I saw the chef bring his own knives to his car. I can tell they do things with care and pride. I haven't tried their omakase but I heard great things about it too. I would definitely recommend and will come back. read more

We've been hearing so much about Akami that we knew we had to come give it a try. Located in a small strip mall with a small parking lot. Our party of 2 came on a Saturday for dinner around 7:30pm and luckily were seated upon arrival. It is a smaller restaurant with a 10 person bar seating and a handful of tables. We both ordered the Sushi Deluxe Set with Negitoro for $41 each. The set comes with miso soup, 10 piece nigiri, and a 6 piece cut negitoro. The set also came with 3 mini side dishes which included tofu and bean sprouts. My favorite nigiri had to be the scallop and yellowtail. The quality for most of the fish was great, but my fiancé and I both agreed that the salmon tasted very off and fishy. I was disappointed because salmon is usually my favorite fish. The service was friendly and refilled our waters often. The interior is modern and the ambience is perfect for a date night. I loved the instrumental versions of popular songs playing in the background. Overall, a solid spot for sushi, although we both agreed that we prefer other spots in the area. read more

I returned to Akami Sushi with my son and we had the best experience with the food! I got the sashimi special and he got the sushi special. The fish was fresh and the presentation was flawless. For the quality of the fish, this was a good value. We also got the crispy rice spicy tuna and the fish to rice ratio was perfect. The seasoning was also spot on. The truffle chawanmushi (steam egg) was good but the truffle flavor was a bit strong for me. My son loved it and drank every last bit of the soup at the end of the bowl. Service was fine. The ambiance is clean and modern. We sat at the sushi bar and I felt like we were in Japan! read more

It's been way too long since I've had real sushi. I usually get my fix from all you can eat joints and had somehow convinced myself that buffet sushi was just as good as sushiya sushi. Dinner at Akami reawakened my love of washoku and helped me realize how long I'd been settling for meh sushi. I ordered the salmon collar and the salmon carpaccio. I have some issues eating most seafood so I usually just stick to salmon to be safe. It was super fresh. No weird fishy aftertaste and no sliminess. They were thick, buttery slices. The collar was delish as well, crisp on the edges and tender inside. I really loved the infused oil on the carpaccio and kept dipping the collar pieces in it. Next time, I'd love to try the tuna dishes too; I trust that the fish would be fresh and high quality. It was a little busy inside on a weekend night, but I was seated with no wait time. It's pretty clean inside but corners are dusty with some crooked nails sticking out of the wall. Service was attentive-ish, I wasn't able to get some water towards the end but my server was very nice. It's a bit of a hole in the wall type of restaurant, but so worth stopping by for a bite. read more

Another night out dining, this one we hit the jackpot. Called in an hour before they closed, there was a short wait-list, me having not had sushi & nigiri in a while, this hidden gem was God-send. Thank you yelp for recommending this meal . The staff here was super accommodating, they checked our party of 3 in, and we were seated within 15 minutes with a full house. Loved the music here, very laid back, loved the ambiance, very modern, very clean, lighting was perfection and illuminated every dish the chefs brought out. They hit every presentation out the ball park not to mention there wasn't a single dish that we disliked. I'm going to spare the details on what we ordered but I'm going to double down on the staff's recommendation the Aburi Toro & Mentaiko Mazemen....just get it, you'll have no regrets. Akami is popular for a reason! We came on a weekend for lunch and parking was ample on the side street just one block away, there was already a line forming at the door. The staff was really welcoming and greeted us as soon as it opened and although small inside they were able to get a majority of us a table right away. They had a few things on the menu that really stood out to me including a never before seen Bluefin Burrata appetizer and a barracuda nigiri option which I haven't seen in the states before! Let me start by saying all the fish at this restaurant are incredibly fresh. I did not eat a single dish here I did not enjoy. The bluefin burrata sounds like an interesting combination but it actually works so well! The savory component of the fish with the slight sweetness and subtlety of the cheese along with the slight tart of the balsamic was really delicious and I could've eaten plates of this! The barracuda was also a treat and had a great Smokey taste on it. I think the sushi platters speak for themselves how elegantly and well plated they are, it reflects just how good they taste. Negitoro is one of my favorite type of makis and it was awesome here! There was a great variety of sushi and the special dish was loaded. I think for the sushi sets they are actually very much affordable in terms of sushi in general and how much they give you, but the overall bill was definitely large for 2 given the apps can be on the pricier side as expected. Overall a really wonderful experience for some of the freshest sushi in the area. Thanks Akami! read more

I was craving sushi and debating between going somewhere I've been prior or going somewhere new. I decided to try something new so I made my way to Sushi Akami. They have a tight lot in the front. It was only after I parked that I saw that there's additional parking in the back but I'm not sure if it's more spacious or not. When I got there the restaurant was only half filled. I didn't have to wait at all. Since I was alone I sat at the bar area. Unfortunately there was a lot of rice spilled on the floor from previous guests and I stepped in it. It made my flip flops all gross and sticky after. I mentioned it to their staff and the reaction didn't seem like they care much. I'm like well I hope you clean it so the person after me doesn't step into it too. *eye roll* I ended up ordering their Sashimi Premium Set ($52) which came with 18 slices of 6 different proteins AND Uni, which was the big selling point for me. The less premium one comes with 15 slices of 5 different proteins. The meals also comes with miso soup and rice. When the set arrived it was really visually appealing. The fish was crealy high quality. However compared to similar tier restaurant and pricing, the cuts were smaller and although most were decent, there was one piece with the sinew or some type of connective tissue interuptting my enjoyment. Oh another thing I didn't like is how their water glass is so small, staff would have to refill it frequently even though I probably drank less than a normal glass of water. Not functional and very disruptive. To get the full experience I decided to get dessert. I was recommended their signature dessert, the Shio Koji Ice Cream ($7). It had subtle sweetness and a nice salty kick and cereal like toppings for crunch. I would have enjoyed it more if the space wasn't so tight and they were shifting folks around. I literally even mentioned I'm almost done and they can have my spot. It just got too hectic. Keep in mind I was limited on how I can sit and avoid that rice pile below me. Also a car alarm went off in the parking lot and I was stressed to check on my car so I started wrapping up. This parking lot is too tight. I don't mind paying for quality but there were also some big misses here. The fish they bought were all premium but their staff can treat it better. Not bad, but there is another sushi spot nearby that has similar quality for larger cuts at a more competitive pricing. I prefer a place where I can enjoy without stressing so much. read more

The fish quality was good! We ordered the salmon and negitoro handroll, the lemon roll, mentaiko mazemen along with the sushi deluxe set. The lemon roll and the mentaiko mazemen are must orders. The lemon roll tasted fresh and the flavors blended very well together. The mentaiko mazemen was also very flavorful and the ikura (fish eggs) weren't too salty! The salmon and negitoro hand rolls were decent as well. I would skip on the sushi deluxe set. Nothing really stood out about this set and honestly tasted like your average nigiri that you can get from x-fish izakaya. Service was good. Servers were attentive and took the time to explain any questions we had on the menu. The restaurant is a bit on the smaller end but very clean. Had a really long lunch break one day and decided to get some fancier lunch with my friend. We went near the start of the lunch rush on a weekday and the restaurant was almost full. Door is wooden and I know it's for a specific aesthetic, but it looks like it's hidden (not a criticism, just an observation). We were seated towards the back wall and service was very attentive and definitely added to the fancy vibe of the place. Lots of people grabbing lunch here from other office workers and what looks like stay at home moms or business people that can side quest endlessly. We got the: 1) Uni Mazemen: -A must after seeing this all over social media and recommended on their Yelp page. -This is Temomi noodle, sea urchin sauce, dashi ikura, and ao nori sea weed. -Slightly chewy noodles that beautifully absorbed the creamy uni sauce. Perfect flavor, none of that bottom of the ocean taste. The ikura were like salty bursts of popping boba to add a refreshing kick to the dish. A must. 2) Sashimi Lunch: -It's assorted fish sashimi based on the chef's choice and comes with miso soup, rice, and a mini side dishes of kobachi. -For our visit we had tako wasa, really fatty delicious tuna, negitoro (tuna with green onions - one of my favs), tamago, cooked salmon, 2 other fishes (sorry forgot), shredded carrots and shiso leaves and there was a cute veggie in the shape of a flower. We also got bean sprout sides, a seaweed and veggie side and cold tofu along with miso soup and rice. -Super fresh fish, melt in your mouth tuna, bold flavors that went great with the garnishes whereas the fish didn't need any of it at all, a testament to the quality of seafood they have here. If you're looking for high end sushi in Arcadia, this is a great place! read more

Amazing food. It was seriously impeccable: I love sushiya, and this place is one of the best. I ordered the sashimi deluxe, which was a great deal at only $39. I was informed that the premium version came with more pieces and included uni, but I'm unfortunately not a fan of uni...and the deluxe was honestly very filling already. Beautiful presentation, and obviously skilled knife work as you might expect. It all tasted so good-- Wherever this place sources their fish from, it is top tier. Super fresh, perfect texture and taste. I also tried the signature bluefin tuna, which comes with burrata. Definitely a less traditional preparation, but I really liked it. It had a strong truffle flavor that complemented it well. It has a little bit of kizami wasabi that I would have liked more of, just for an extra bit of zing. There's a small parking lot shared with several other stores, but there's also ample street parking. It looks pretty nondescript on the outside, but the interior is bright and clean. Service was good and attentive. I had a great experience all around :) read more

Akami Sushi in Arcadia is hands down one of the best value sushi spots in the area. It's the kind of place you end up coming back to over and over because the combination of price, quality, and people is just hard to beat. The fish is always fresh and well cut, and the portions are generous for what you're paying. Nothing feels skimpy or rushed, and you can tell they take pride in putting out consistent plates. Whether you're ordering nigiri, rolls, or a full spread for the table, everything comes out clean, balanced, and satisfying. What really makes this place stand out is the team. Everyone is genuinely friendly and welcoming, and it creates that neighborhood spot feeling where you're happy to sit, relax, and take your time. It never feels transactional. For the price point, the quality you're getting is honestly better than a lot of other places nearby that charge more. It's become our go to when we want solid sushi without overthinking it. If you're in the Arcadia area, this is easily one of the best and most dependable sushi spots around. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon and boy it was busy! I've been to this place previously and recalled the sushi there wasn't good-- and now Akami Sushi has taken over. Been meaning to try a this place didn't disappoint! My only cons about this place is the size of the restaurant and parking. Because it's such a small place, they can only fit ~10-15 ppl max and as such, the yelp waitlist gets LONG. They are only open direct select times and especially during lunch, it was a bit chaotic. They do offer Yelp Waitlist so definitely check-in PRIOR to coming is the move. The parking lot is super small so just do the street parking on Lenore Ave is your best bet. My friend and I ordered the following items: 1. Kaisen Don: 10/10 This was delicious! So many cuts of fish (tuna, toro, yellowtail, roe, etc) all placed in one bowl with rice. There was also a mushroom soup (rather bland) and soy marinated egg that went with it, along with seaweed to make into hand rolls. Plenty of side dishes too and presentation was nice. This was located on their weekly specials and not the menu itself. 2. Mentaiko Mazemen: 7/10 I've had Mentaiko before at other paces and usually found it pretty salty. However, this was honestly really tasty and not salty at all. Can still taste the Mentaiko and roe, and the noodles were QQ texture. Very delicious and surprisingly filling. Would recommend! 3. Salmon truffle carpaccio: 6/10 My friend wants this but we decided not to get it because it was going to be a lot of food. This was actually "on the house" because the server moved us to a different table. We were very shocked by their kindness and hospitality towards us. The salmon was soft but felt like it was overly seasoned with the soy sauce. So not my favorite dish but it was complimentary! Overall, I had a really nice time here and the servers were all really kind! I felt bad because the place closed by 2 PM but my friend and I talked until 2:40 PM and they didn't kick us out. This place definitely was super delicious and would go again during non-busy times... pretty on-par with Sushi Kisen but a bit more expensive. Would want to try their omakase next time! read more

Don't be deterred by the name, there isn't really any alcohol flavor, I wish I knew how to make it so I can explain this better it's creamy but on the denser side, slightly savory, sweet, aroma from the popped rice (I think...?). Been to Akami Sushi a couple of times now & the food never disappoints. The fish/seafood/sushi is always super fresh, which is why I keep coming back. This time I tried their new menu item, the Akami Kaisen Don Set (in their Today Special menu), because it looked just like the seafood bowl I had in Tokyo (Mukai in Shibuya). I've been searching for a place in LA that does something similar & honestly haven't found one until now. It tasted great & was very close to the one I had in Japan! Really hits the spot if you're craving that kind of meal. The sashimi that came with the set was buttery soft & melted in my mouth. My only small wish is that they'd serve the soup separately a bit later so it stays hot for ochazuke. I felt like I had to rush eating the bowl so the soup wouldn't get too cold before pouring it over. Overall, such a solid set meal & I seriously hope they keep this on the menu forever because I'll definitely be coming back just for this. read more

Fresh ingredients and lots of options, great lunch combo! We got a sushi premium ($48) and a lunch set ($32) and both were delicious! The lunch set came in a large serving tray with a small plate of edamame, a choice of cut roll, a small handroll, 4 pcs of carpaccio, and a bowl of miso soup. It was perfect for a big lunch meal! The sushi premium came with 3 bite-sized cold dishes - tofu, bean sprouts, and pickles. The sushi choices were fantastic, including scallop, ikura, taro, and much more!! We enjoyed the sushi rice as well, it was lightly seasoned, and you don't really need more soy sauce to enjoy the high-quality fish. The only not-so-impressive thing was the cold miso soup bowl; both of our soup bowls were cold, which made the soup cold... They stored the soup bowl with tofu in the fridge to speed up serving.
