My boyfriend discovered Masamitsu and he wanted to take me here for dinner since I love sushi. They have some parking in front of the restaurant but I don't like that you would have to be parking on a main street. It's stressful when it's time to back out and leave. There was sushi bar seating or a selection of booths. The decor is modern and simple. Service was friendly for the most part. We both ordered the Chirashi Premium ($58/each) with the Royal Upgrade ($8/each) for the chawanmushi. Meal also comes with miso soup. Yelp check in can get you a free ice cream. I didn't like that the miso soup came with tempura batter floating. It makes it oily and heavy starting out the meal. I wouldn't complain in udon noodles but I don't like it in miso soup. When the chirashi bowl came out I was surprised at how small the bowl is. For the similar price point in this area, I have seen a better portions, shout out to Sushi Kisen. The premium was mostly good but one of the slices of tuna I got, I wouldn't have served in a premium bowl. The uni, which is one of the reasons I wanted the premium, was not fresh. Cringe. Worst of all was the amaebi, or sweet shrimp. There was still guts remaining and not cleaned out correctly. I wouldn't care if this was a take out low experience, but higher price tags come with higher expectations. Don't get me wrong, most of the fish was fresh, but it falls short of expectations. The premium chawanmushi comes with truffle shaving and caviar. Mhmm... texturally it could be more delicate. It was a bit firm. It was nice to try but I don't need to come back. We literally went to buy pizza by the slice after this meal... This experience represents the stereotype of paying to much and leaving hungry.

A friend suggested this place. I think it used to be a different restaurant but not a 100% sure. I ordered the sashimi dinner which came with a wide range of fish (tuna, salmon, scallops, white fish, and squid. The fish was very fresh and the whole plate was really good. I think I'd try the sushi the next time.

Haven't been Masamitsu authentic Japanese sushi restaurant for a long time, but this time I was having cooked foods included pork tonkatsu fried filet, black Cod fish with miso sauce, and a beef sukiyaki with cabbage and glass noodles!!! Tasting delicious n freshly, there are many selections for Al la Cart menu kitchen foods besides sushi n sashimi!!

We went to masamitsu on a whim wanting something cold to eat after a day at the Huntington. They went above and beyond what we expected. We were seated at the sushi bar and we were still able to order from the normal menu. The chef in front of us kindly explained what things were when we had questions. We got every fatty tuna they had (including the hand peeled tuna special) and it was all amazing. My husband didn't love that one of them (the chu toro I think?) had an odd chew to it - but I believe it was from charred skin. It was still delicious to me! We also got salmon and salmon belly which were both incredible. Every round of sushi was artfully prepared down to the complement of plate color and design. We were so impressed. The chef also made sure to pre split our servings for sharing - such a thoughtful touch! We got our entrees - Dipping Soba and the Sea Bass Misoyaki. Both were insanely delicious. They put out various accoutrements for both so you can mix and match your veggie bites with the star. We both loved it. And everything was cooked so well. The dipping sauce for the soba was dashi based and had a distinct smoky flavor. Delicious. For desssert, we got a scoop of hojicha and a scoop of lychee ice cream. They both had the very distinct flavor they claimed. It was an excellent end to our meal. The ambiance is more vintage Japanese porcelain and liquor bottles for the decor, but they do play Miyazaki music to give the Ghibli vibe. Anyways highly recommend this place. So worth it. I've added the few pictures I remembered to take to this review.

Masamitsu is truly a true gem for the city of San Marino. Everything from the service to the sashimi is truly exceptional. Prices are reasonable and all their fish are so fresh! Great Sake selection and a great restaurant for dining! Beautiful decor as well! The bill for 2 with tips came out to about $500 so I was very pleased. I had such a great time! Can't wait to be back!

Came here for lunch and sat at the sushi bar. Been wanting to try this place for a while so glad I was able to stop by after running errands in that area. The ambiance is really nice in there, clean and spacious. Nice soothing music in the background made the experience pretty enjoyable. Food I came for lunch and decided to order off of the sushi menu rather than getting omakase or lunch specials, wasn't really feeling cut rolls or soups. The selections included: kinmedai, kanpachi, maguro, chutoro, salmon, unagi, halibut, scallop, Santa Barbara Uni. I also ordered a tofu dish, garlic edamame, and chicken karage for side dishes. Overall, all the sushi was amazing except for the chutoro which was super chewy, probably due to connective tissue. All the sides were delicious, I'd probably skip the tofu dish as there wasn't much flavor. They also had Suntory Premium on tap, which was a nice pairing. Service was on point, from the waiters to the sushi chef cutting the fish in front of me. Every time I would finish a piece of sushi the chef would start preparing the next one, they go according to your eating speed.

I was really happy to see a true Japanese restaurant in San Marino! Not known for its restaurants, this restaurant is a highlight for San Marino residents. I chose the cold soba and tempura, with mackerel sushi on the side. Something I noticed is this restaurant does not have any odors of deep frying or fish. As a first-time visit, I really enjoyed my time here and would bring friends or relatives to dine on authentic Japanese food. The servers are mindful and watch for anything they can help with and paid special attention to my needs. The ambiance is totally Japanese and not a fusion restaurant. Next time, I'll bring the wife, who enjoys Japanese food at a reasonable price.

Very nice mom n pop Japanese cuisine restaurant. Offers a sushi bar, dine-in and large room for levers parties. The fish is very fresh, although pricier than I like, the rolls and garlic edamame were also very good! Our waiter was very attentive of our behavior from the get go and played right along with our mood! He was great! Overall, I love this restaurant and you should give it a try!

This place is actually a hidden gem! I love that this sushi restaurant is on the higher end, where you get better quality, fish, but expect to pay a premium for it. It's not going to cost you an arm and a leg, but it is comparable to the more quality sushi restaurants out in the SGV. There is plenty of parking in the back, and getting to the restaurant is fairly simple. I didn't have any issues finding a seat, but if you're looking for an omakase experience, it is recommended that you book a reservation. The service is pretty good, they were very accommodating, and the fish was delicious! I love that they deep-fried the sweet shrimp head. The ambience is fairly chill, it is very intimate, so you can come for any occasions, for fun, or whatever it is. They have a very seasonal menu, so they have whatever that can be flown in fresh.

My aunt treated us to their omakase and ordered some other dishes as well. It was a delicious experience, but one that lasted a little too long. Dinner ended up being 3.5 hours long because they were short two sushi chefs, which apparently they did notify her in advance but it's still crazy how there was an hour of almost no courses in between. The server didn't really check up on us in between either until we asked another server and she mistakenly told us that all the courses had arrived. An almost four hour dinner with twin toddlers meant a lot of whining, wanting to get out of their booster chairs because the restaurant ran out of highchairs, one broken plate, and a lot of running around. Also, dinner was so long that they got hungry again so we had to feed them again towards the end. Thankfully we brought enough snacks and we had a private room, otherwise they wouldn't have lasted. I did see a lot of other children eating here so it seems popular with families, BUT there's no diaper changing station in either of the gender neutral restrooms so we had to take our kids out to the car to change their diapers. I enjoyed everything in the omakase, and the tempura and clams in broth were also good. All the sushi tasted fresh and the uni was delicious! The only thing I didn't enjoy was the crab croquettes that weren't part of the omakase. I didn't really taste any crab and it was mostly cream. I only managed to take pictures of one course because, you know, twin toddlers.

Haven't updated my review since my first dining experience, but my husband and I have been dining here for about two years now and Masamitsu is our favorite restaurant to eat sushi / Japanese cuisine. It's consistently good and the costs are quite reasonable which we love. We absolutely love everyone who works here, especially my girl, Mia, Chef Ken and Chef Brent. 10/10 recommend!

Customer service was very prompt and welcoming. Dining ambience was peaceful and chill; they were playing Studio Ghibli soundtrack songs at one point which was a serene vibe. The Chirashi Regular dish I tried was fresh and delicious, would recommend especially at a reasonable $30 price point for the size and quality. In each spoonful, their Lychee Sorbet dessert was delish, creamy and a bright sweetness; refreshing treat after a meal. Minus 1 star for the Miso Soup - it was sadly lacking in miso flavor. Everything else was fantastic, but this restaurant just needs to improve their Miso Soup.

Stumbled across this gem on Huntington drive in San Marino. What a nice surprise! Love the food! Fresh ingredients! Pretty plating. Inside decor is calming and zen. I also love the cute mini fresh floral arrangement on each table. Black cod miso portion is a bit small so be aware. May need to order more dishes. Rice portion is ok though. The Chirashi regular is good portion, has scallops too. Also good selection and variety of sashimi. Check in on yelp and get a free dessert. We got a lychee sorbet. Service is friendly and attentive.
