Kogane is a spectacular hidden gem! Chef Roe and Chef Harry are masters at their craft. We initially booked table seating on the tock app but upon arrival they were able to accommodate two more for the bar at 8pm. I came here with my wife and we got the 16 course omakase and the sake pairing. Every course was delicious and the sake pairing elevated it even further. Chefs were highly engaged and the service staff was outstanding. I read that the original chefs have moved onto new ventures but Kogane is in great hands with Head Chef Roe! I recommend everyone to try Kogane! I will certainly be dining here again.

came here for a valentine's day lunch 16 course omakase. bill was about $400 for two people. every course was so fresh and the chef explained where each dish came from. he took the time to explain the prepping process which was very interesting at the beginning of the course i told the chef no ginger and he was very accommodating. he removed all dishes that had ginger and even subbed one of the courses for a huge piece of salmon nigiri overall would be back for the omakase again

I've dined at Kogane for the lunch and dinner omakase when both Chef Fumio and Chef Kwan were with Kogane. Both experiences were absolutely delicious. The previous lunch menu was reasonably priced at $120 and offered a delightful preview of what Kogane had to offer. The 22 course dinner menu was priced at $300 and offered an extensive menu with even more delicious nigiri and hot food items. The stand out nigiri were the dry aged blue fin tuna, dry aged otoro, nodoguro (blackthroat sea perch), sayori (needle fish), and sanma (pike mackerel). I loved how the chefs prepared a gigantic roll off menu with pieces of fish and tamago as a finale to our meal. I'm saddened to know both of the founding chefs are no longer with Kogane but I do want to try Kogane's new causal, sushi-focused omakase menu in the future.

Kogane in Alhambra offers a highly-rated, traditional omakase experience praised for its fresh, high-quality fish, skillful chefs, intimate setting, and focus on natural flavors, with standout dishes like dry-aged toro, unique mackerel, and fluffy tamago. Chef Rose is known for his craft, humor, and personalized touch, making the experience fun and informative. Good sake and wine selections are available. Enjoy traditional Japanese omakase restaurant in a minimalist setting with no distractions, allowing you to focus on the fish, with little to no extra sauce needed. Expect around 16 to 22 courses, from appetizers to nigiri and a unique tamago. Finish with their house made ice cream. Kogane is a top-tier, high end omakase destination for serious sushi lovers in the San Gabriel Valley, offering unique, expertly prepared fish and a focused, traditional experience Do expect a premium price for this intimate sushi journey.

If you guys looking better fresh omakase, I think this is a better place. It's cozy and cool.. best chef presentation ever and friendly.. pricey but worthy. . the server know their timing change of plating.. 10/10.. By the way, they have new hours too.. Great to know, even walk-ins are welcome.. Note. Forgot to took all the nigiri pictures, too tasty

Great value omakase at Kogane. For $155, you get a 16-course counter experience that feels both high-quality and relaxed. The chef is friendly and chats while preparing each course, which makes it more enjoyable. The fish is very fresh--especially the uni, which is clean and sweet. Their dry-aged (12 days) tuna and toro are a standout, with deep, slowly building umami. Loved the attention to detail--from the rice temperature and seasoning to the pacing. Overall, a memorable and well-balanced omakase that's totally worth the price.

Came here to celebrate my birthday and I can't believe we have an omakase in Alhambra! Such a hidden gem! Chef was so nice and personable. There's a story behind each dish and learning of each fish. Great sense of humor, too! There were only 3 people working - main chef, second chef (preps the hot dishes), and server. Highly recommend the omakase dinner experience because it is so worth it. But please DO NOT be late and let the chef know if you don't like certain dishes. Being late and wasting the food he made are SO disrespectful.

Course #16: the dessert. This was tamago/egg, it has a very fluffy, custard-cake-like flavor and consistency

A nice little store, not super fancy, but decent. We came for the lunch omakase, $120 per person for 16 courses. This experience was lovely, every piece (except maybe one) was amazingly fresh and wonderfully sauced. You can customize the spice level if the wasabi is too much. They also accommodate food allergies, but notify them ahead of time. Overall, the nigiri's are quite small. This is enough food for people who don't eat very much or who had a large breakfast beforehand. Chef Fumi was personable and explained each course in detail. We had a nice little chat about anime while we were there. The stars of the omakase was the uni and the many different types of dry aged toro. My family has been to a couple of omakases and this was pretty typical. The vinegar on the rice is stronger flavored compared to other places.

Koganw is a very traditional omakase experience. I came here to have a birthday lunch for my fiancé and I can say it was a great experience! Because I made a reservation, they had a card with my name on it making you feel special when you walk in. Just like the sushi, the decor is minimalistic to the max, which was pleasant to have no distractions between you, the fish, and the chef. Speaking of the chef and staff, they were all very professional and we had conversations with everyone working there, which I would say adds an extra star to this review. As for the food, you will get lots of different Japanese fish you don't usually get from omakase in the surrounding area. In addition to fish like dry aged toro, uni, and scallops, we got the buttery Nodoguro fish and the flavorful sayori. Beware for sauce lovers, the sushi chef focuses on balance and flavor of the fish so there is very little sauce and you will not have soy sauce on your table (definitely not needed). Overall for the lunch price and experience was very worth! You might be able to get higher quality fish from a more expensive omakase, but if you want to impress with not just food, but atmosphere and conversation, Kogane is a must!

The most expensive lunch (alcohol was the main cause) for my bd month. I heard about this place for awhile and finally got a chance to try with a friend for my incoming BD. The aged Tuna and Toro were perfect. This was the first time I tried aged fish and I was utterly impressed with the taste. Who would have thought aged fish can taste this good. Every single piece of Nigiri was perfectly paired with Katsuyama Shoryu,Yumedono & Katsuyama Akatsuki Sake. Chef Fumi was funny and knowledgeable. I love the cozy ambiance atmosphere, four guests total. A simple lunch turned into a small party with two other guests at the sushi bar. It is fantastic to have a sushi restaurant with this caliber here in Alhambra. In my opinion, it's a must try if you are a local & a sushi lover.

Not my first time here, and it definitely won't be my last. The chefs are incredibly skilled and also super friendly and fun, which makes the whole experience even better. I really enjoyed it, and they've recently added some new items to the menu too. Looking forward to coming back again!

Plenty of parking in the plaza, near Kohl's This place is unassuming, no idea a sushi place was here when you drive by. Could be hard to get reservations, day of, or week of. Need to plan a little ahead Excellent Omakase! Fish quality was excellent The food was memorable and service was impeccable, very attentive! Love the hot tea Ambiance is Japanese minimalism, in the best way.

The portions were generous, the flavors were on point, and everything tasted fresh. The ramen had a rich, flavorful broth, and the Yellowtail Delight Roll was just as good as it looked. The restaurant itself was clean, and the staff was amazing, Riley was our server. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer questions or make recommendations. Great customer service definitely made the experience even better. Parking was probably the biggest challenge. The restaurant is located in a shopping center with several other businesses, so finding a spot can take a little patience, especially during busy hours. Value wise it is definately very value priced. It seem like their lunch also has a good bento value as well. Parking is massive since it's part of a shopping plaza, though the restaurant itself seems a bit out of place and can easily be missed when you're driving by. They do have a really wide selection of rolls. The other person in my group got the spider roll and truly enjoy it. However, it was disappointing that there wasn't much variety for non-fried food in the bento combinations. A good bento box should be a balanced meal, but pretty much my whole meal felt fried. Also, the place doesn't fully represent a traditional Japanese aesthetic, it feels alot more like a Korean twist on sushi. Overall, great for the wallet and good rolls, but just okay on the balance of the bento meal.

One of the freshest--if not the best--sushi marketplaces in town! Yama Sushi Marketplace is a small…read moreshop that is always packed with locals looking to satisfy their sushi cravings, and after my first visit, I can definitely see why. The store offers an impressive selection of Japanese goodies, including ramen, condiments, fresh sashimi, and a wide variety of sushi rolls. There are so many options and combinations to choose from. If you are looking for sashimi, head to the back of the store where they have conveniently packaged fish sold by the pound, and they will happily slice it for you. Or, if you are in a hurry, you can grab their freshly made sushi rolls from the refrigerators. On my visit, I picked up ahi tuna, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi, along with California rolls and tuna rolls. Every piece of fish was incredibly fresh with a buttery texture and amazing flavor. The quality of the fish and the perfectly seasoned sushi rice were so good that I barely needed any soy sauce or wasabi. I only recently discovered this hidden gem, but it has already become a place I will be visiting regularly. The sushi is high quality, reasonably priced, and absolutely delicious. I picked up an assortment of tuna, salmon, and mixed rolls. All were fresh and delicious with great rice and good fish portions! I brought these for a party and everyone loved it! Yama is still the go-to spot for "market" sushi!
