    Dry Aged Hon Maguro Otoro

I've dined at Kogane for the lunch and dinner omakase when both Chef Fumio and Chef Kwan were with Kogane. Both experiences were absolutely delicious. The previous lunch menu was reasonably priced at $120 and offered a delightful preview of what Kogane had to offer. The 22 course dinner menu was priced at $300 and offered an extensive menu with even more delicious nigiri and hot food items. The stand out nigiri were the dry aged blue fin tuna, dry aged otoro, nodoguro (blackthroat sea perch), sayori (needle fish), and sanma (pike mackerel). I loved how the chefs prepared a gigantic roll off menu with pieces of fish and tamago as a finale to our meal. I'm saddened to know both of the founding chefs are no longer with Kogane but I do want to try Kogane's new causal, sushi-focused omakase menu in the future.

Kogane in Alhambra offers a highly-rated, traditional omakase experience praised for its fresh, high-quality fish, skillful chefs, intimate setting, and focus on natural flavors, with standout dishes like dry-aged toro, unique mackerel, and fluffy tamago. Chef Rose is known for his craft, humor, and personalized touch, making the experience fun and informative. Good sake and wine selections are available. Enjoy traditional Japanese omakase restaurant in a minimalist setting with no distractions, allowing you to focus on the fish, with little to no extra sauce needed. Expect around 16 to 22 courses, from appetizers to nigiri and a unique tamago. Finish with their house made ice cream. Kogane is a top-tier, high end omakase destination for serious sushi lovers in the San Gabriel Valley, offering unique, expertly prepared fish and a focused, traditional experience Do expect a premium price for this intimate sushi journey.

Great value omakase at Kogane. For $155, you get a 16-course counter experience that feels both high-quality and relaxed. The chef is friendly and chats while preparing each course, which makes it more enjoyable. The fish is very fresh--especially the uni, which is clean and sweet. Their dry-aged (12 days) tuna and toro are a standout, with deep, slowly building umami. Loved the attention to detail--from the rice temperature and seasoning to the pacing. Overall, a memorable and well-balanced omakase that's totally worth the price.

Not my first time here, and it definitely won't be my last. The chefs are incredibly skilled and also super friendly and fun, which makes the whole experience even better. I really enjoyed it, and they've recently added some new items to the menu too. Looking forward to coming back again!

Came here to celebrate my birthday and I can't believe we have an omakase in Alhambra! Such a hidden gem! Chef was so nice and personable. There's a story behind each dish and learning of each fish. Great sense of humor, too! There were only 3 people working - main chef, second chef (preps the hot dishes), and server. Highly recommend the omakase dinner experience because it is so worth it. But please DO NOT be late and let the chef know if you don't like certain dishes. Being late and wasting the food he made are SO disrespectful.

Course #16: the dessert. This was tamago/egg, it has a very fluffy, custard-cake-like flavor and consistency

A nice little store, not super fancy, but decent. We came for the lunch omakase, $120 per person for 16 courses. This experience was lovely, every piece (except maybe one) was amazingly fresh and wonderfully sauced. You can customize the spice level if the wasabi is too much. They also accommodate food allergies, but notify them ahead of time. Overall, the nigiri's are quite small. This is enough food for people who don't eat very much or who had a large breakfast beforehand. Chef Fumi was personable and explained each course in detail. We had a nice little chat about anime while we were there. The stars of the omakase was the uni and the many different types of dry aged toro. My family has been to a couple of omakases and this was pretty typical. The vinegar on the rice is stronger flavored compared to other places.

Koganw is a very traditional omakase experience. I came here to have a birthday lunch for my fiancé and I can say it was a great experience! Because I made a reservation, they had a card with my name on it making you feel special when you walk in. Just like the sushi, the decor is minimalistic to the max, which was pleasant to have no distractions between you, the fish, and the chef. Speaking of the chef and staff, they were all very professional and we had conversations with everyone working there, which I would say adds an extra star to this review. As for the food, you will get lots of different Japanese fish you don't usually get from omakase in the surrounding area. In addition to fish like dry aged toro, uni, and scallops, we got the buttery Nodoguro fish and the flavorful sayori. Beware for sauce lovers, the sushi chef focuses on balance and flavor of the fish so there is very little sauce and you will not have soy sauce on your table (definitely not needed). Overall for the lunch price and experience was very worth! You might be able to get higher quality fish from a more expensive omakase, but if you want to impress with not just food, but atmosphere and conversation, Kogane is a must!

The most expensive lunch (alcohol was the main cause) for my bd month. I heard about this place for awhile and finally got a chance to try with a friend for my incoming BD. The aged Tuna and Toro were perfect. This was the first time I tried aged fish and I was utterly impressed with the taste. Who would have thought aged fish can taste this good. Every single piece of Nigiri was perfectly paired with Katsuyama Shoryu,Yumedono & Katsuyama Akatsuki Sake. Chef Fumi was funny and knowledgeable. I love the cozy ambiance atmosphere, four guests total. A simple lunch turned into a small party with two other guests at the sushi bar. It is fantastic to have a sushi restaurant with this caliber here in Alhambra. In my opinion, it's a must try if you are a local & a sushi lover.

Plenty of parking in the plaza, near Kohl's This place is unassuming, no idea a sushi place was here when you drive by. Could be hard to get reservations, day of, or week of. Need to plan a little ahead Excellent Omakase! Fish quality was excellent The food was memorable and service was impeccable, very attentive! Love the hot tea Ambiance is Japanese minimalism, in the best way.

A local gem hidden in an unassuming strip mall with plenty of parking (yay) My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary celebration after eyeing this place for months, and we are so happy that it far surpassed our expectations :) Dinner omakase is approximately 20 courses with simple presentations of varied sashimi and warm dishes, but each bite was so decadent that we were loosening our belts by round 14. Highlights were the sesame tofu made in-house by Chef Roe, uni handroll, dry-aged akami & otoro (of course), and to my surprise, the saba. The sashimi pieces did not have a bunch of flavors or decoration laid on them, but each piece was so decadent and buttery....with just ground wasabi and soy sauce. Chef Fumi takes pride in each dish and gives an extensive background on the ingredients, as well as delivering a comic dialogue with the guests. I'm used to a more somber omakase so this was a pleasant surprise :) Service was impeccable. Manager Shin was on top of everything, and made the experience seamless. Price is hefty at $300pp excluding drinks or service tip, but I understand they have a significant overhead to cover. If anything, they serve an abbreviated lunch omakase for $120 :) Looking forward to returning with my boyfriend and sushi loving friends :)

Something keeps drawing us back to Kogane... between the team here and the quality of dishes, there's no place in sgv that matches their level of omakase. They are friendly and knowledgeable for first timers and welcoming to familiar faces. Their lunch option during the weekend is a more chill option for a quick fix, but dinner service is where it's at. Chefs Fumio, Kwan, Roe, and Jon really make Kogane's our go-to omakase

Great experience. The food and sushi are all delicious! The chef was considerate, polite and friendly! He also makes good jokes haha. Every dish you can see chef make efforts. I also like the bar table seat is spacious. The tone in the shop is peaceful. I really like Kogane and would like to recommend all my friends. It is rare to have a good omakase at SGV. I am appreciated! Also super easy to park with the parking lot at the back. Good good good!
