I've known about Kogane for several years, ever since it opened during COVID. The prices were always a bit steep for me despite the number of courses offered on the omakase menu. Recently, the restaurant offered alternative menus for a cheaper price, so I decided to finally come give it a try. I came here for two of my friends' birthdays. I ended up getting the nigiri omakase. Despite the Yelp screenshot of the menu stating that the nigiri omakase came with 10 nigiri omakase and 1 handroll, it actually only came with 10 nigiri omakase and then a miso soup. The nigiri were quite small, which was acceptable given the price. I liked that the chefs used both regular sushi rice and also red vinegar rice, also known as aka-shari. I love the extra sour/sweet notes with aka shari, so that was nice that the chefs used it for certain dishes. The chefs did ask for any allergies or food intolerances. One of my friends said she did not like wasabi, but the chef still gave her a nigiri with wasabi in it. I had to correct the chef again, and he took out wasabi for the remaining pieces of nigiri. The actual nigiri were ok. The fish were of solid quality as was the wasabi. The chefs did end the meal with castella tamago, which was a nice dessert. We had brought cake, but the restaurant did not allow us to eat cake inside the restaurant. Although little things like cake and accidentally adding wasabi might be potentially ok for a casual restaurant, these type of issues are a bit less forgiving for an upscale omakase restaurant. My friend only had an intolerance to wasabi, if she instead had an allergy to wasabi and it was hidden, that could have been severe. I hope that the chefs may take more care to listen closely to customers' intolerances and allergies moving forward.

Kogane is a spectacular hidden gem! Chef Roe and Chef Harry are masters at their craft. We initially booked table seating on the tock app but upon arrival they were able to accommodate two more for the bar at 8pm. I came here with my wife and we got the 16 course omakase and the sake pairing. Every course was delicious and the sake pairing elevated it even further. Chefs were highly engaged and the service staff was outstanding. I read that the original chefs have moved onto new ventures but Kogane is in great hands with Head Chef Roe! I recommend everyone to try Kogane! I will certainly be dining here again.

After seeing so many posts about this place lately, I had to check it out for myself. Are restaurants competing so hard these days that even omakase is getting in on it? This Signature Omakase includes 16 courses for $155. What surprised me most was that after the very first piece, the chef asked whether the rice seasoning and overall balance suited my taste. Based on that feedback, he adjusted the rest of the meal. It honestly felt like a customized experience. I've always believed great ingredients matter more than anything else, and for the quality here, the value felt incredible. Throughout the meal, the chefs were happy to chat and answer questions, but the moment it was time to prepare the next course, they switched right back into full focus mode. Each piece came with an explanation of where the fish came from, which part was being served, and how it was prepared. There was actually a first-time omakase guest sitting next to us who had just walked in after class nearby. She asked so many questions that the rest of us ended up getting a free sushi education too Since I'm obsessed with uni, I asked about it. The chefs told us they taste every batch before serving it. Apparently they had one a few days earlier that turned out a little bitter, so they refused to serve it to guests. My immediate response was: "So... does that mean you guys get to eat it all yourselves?!" They just smiled and said nothing. The tuna we had that day had arrived the very same morning, so we got to enjoy it at its freshest. I felt ridiculously lucky. And then the chef casually showed off a box of premium Daigokujyo uni that had just come in... which somehow turned into everyone getting some That's one of the things I love most about omakase. Once you've made the reservation, you never really know what ingredients or stories you'll encounter that day. The chef also mentioned that over Memorial Day weekend, someone drove all the way down from San Francisco just to eat here. My reaction was basically: Wait... seriously?!

I've dined at Kogane for the lunch and dinner omakase when both Chef Fumio and Chef Kwan were with Kogane. Both experiences were absolutely delicious. The previous lunch menu was reasonably priced at $120 and offered a delightful preview of what Kogane had to offer. The 22 course dinner menu was priced at $300 and offered an extensive menu with even more delicious nigiri and hot food items. The stand out nigiri were the dry aged blue fin tuna, dry aged otoro, nodoguro (blackthroat sea perch), sayori (needle fish), and sanma (pike mackerel). I loved how the chefs prepared a gigantic roll off menu with pieces of fish and tamago as a finale to our meal. I'm saddened to know both of the founding chefs are no longer with Kogane but I do want to try Kogane's new causal, sushi-focused omakase menu in the future.

Fresh, high-quality sushi, great sake, and a cozy atmosphere. The 16-course omakase was excellent value, and the owner was friendly and easy to communicate with. Definitely worth a visit!

came here for a valentine's day lunch 16 course omakase. bill was about $400 for two people. every course was so fresh and the chef explained where each dish came from. he took the time to explain the prepping process which was very interesting at the beginning of the course i told the chef no ginger and he was very accommodating. he removed all dishes that had ginger and even subbed one of the courses for a huge piece of salmon nigiri overall would be back for the omakase again

Kogane in Alhambra offers a highly-rated, traditional omakase experience praised for its fresh, high-quality fish, skillful chefs, intimate setting, and focus on natural flavors, with standout dishes like dry-aged toro, unique mackerel, and fluffy tamago. Chef Rose is known for his craft, humor, and personalized touch, making the experience fun and informative. Good sake and wine selections are available. Enjoy traditional Japanese omakase restaurant in a minimalist setting with no distractions, allowing you to focus on the fish, with little to no extra sauce needed. Expect around 16 to 22 courses, from appetizers to nigiri and a unique tamago. Finish with their house made ice cream. Kogane is a top-tier, high end omakase destination for serious sushi lovers in the San Gabriel Valley, offering unique, expertly prepared fish and a focused, traditional experience Do expect a premium price for this intimate sushi journey.

If you guys looking better fresh omakase, I think this is a better place. It's cozy and cool.. best chef presentation ever and friendly.. pricey but worthy. . the server know their timing change of plating.. 10/10.. By the way, they have new hours too.. Great to know, even walk-ins are welcome.. Note. Forgot to took all the nigiri pictures, too tasty

Came here to celebrate my birthday and I can't believe we have an omakase in Alhambra! Such a hidden gem! Chef was so nice and personable. There's a story behind each dish and learning of each fish. Great sense of humor, too! There were only 3 people working - main chef, second chef (preps the hot dishes), and server. Highly recommend the omakase dinner experience because it is so worth it. But please DO NOT be late and let the chef know if you don't like certain dishes. Being late and wasting the food he made are SO disrespectful.

Great value omakase at Kogane. For $155, you get a 16-course counter experience that feels both high-quality and relaxed. The chef is friendly and chats while preparing each course, which makes it more enjoyable. The fish is very fresh--especially the uni, which is clean and sweet. Their dry-aged (12 days) tuna and toro are a standout, with deep, slowly building umami. Loved the attention to detail--from the rice temperature and seasoning to the pacing. Overall, a memorable and well-balanced omakase that's totally worth the price.

Course #16: the dessert. This was tamago/egg, it has a very fluffy, custard-cake-like flavor and consistency

A nice little store, not super fancy, but decent. We came for the lunch omakase, $120 per person for 16 courses. This experience was lovely, every piece (except maybe one) was amazingly fresh and wonderfully sauced. You can customize the spice level if the wasabi is too much. They also accommodate food allergies, but notify them ahead of time. Overall, the nigiri's are quite small. This is enough food for people who don't eat very much or who had a large breakfast beforehand. Chef Fumi was personable and explained each course in detail. We had a nice little chat about anime while we were there. The stars of the omakase was the uni and the many different types of dry aged toro. My family has been to a couple of omakases and this was pretty typical. The vinegar on the rice is stronger flavored compared to other places.

Koganw is a very traditional omakase experience. I came here to have a birthday lunch for my fiancé and I can say it was a great experience! Because I made a reservation, they had a card with my name on it making you feel special when you walk in. Just like the sushi, the decor is minimalistic to the max, which was pleasant to have no distractions between you, the fish, and the chef. Speaking of the chef and staff, they were all very professional and we had conversations with everyone working there, which I would say adds an extra star to this review. As for the food, you will get lots of different Japanese fish you don't usually get from omakase in the surrounding area. In addition to fish like dry aged toro, uni, and scallops, we got the buttery Nodoguro fish and the flavorful sayori. Beware for sauce lovers, the sushi chef focuses on balance and flavor of the fish so there is very little sauce and you will not have soy sauce on your table (definitely not needed). Overall for the lunch price and experience was very worth! You might be able to get higher quality fish from a more expensive omakase, but if you want to impress with not just food, but atmosphere and conversation, Kogane is a must!

The most expensive lunch (alcohol was the main cause) for my bd month. I heard about this place for awhile and finally got a chance to try with a friend for my incoming BD. The aged Tuna and Toro were perfect. This was the first time I tried aged fish and I was utterly impressed with the taste. Who would have thought aged fish can taste this good. Every single piece of Nigiri was perfectly paired with Katsuyama Shoryu,Yumedono & Katsuyama Akatsuki Sake. Chef Fumi was funny and knowledgeable. I love the cozy ambiance atmosphere, four guests total. A simple lunch turned into a small party with two other guests at the sushi bar. It is fantastic to have a sushi restaurant with this caliber here in Alhambra. In my opinion, it's a must try if you are a local & a sushi lover.

In any case, we spent about thirty minutes perusing the aisles of Sprouts and chatting outside before our table was ready. As an appetizer, we ordered the Ika Geso, fried squid legs which had a crispy texture dipped in the fresh flavors of aioli and lemon juice. For the main course, we went with family style and ordered the following rolls: Refresh, Truffle Seared Salmon, Ultimate Yellowtail, and Black Spider. My minor complaint would be the irregularly shaped portions of the Black Spider with some fried crab sticking out being slightly awkward to eat. Other than that, everything tasted fresh and unique, especially the Refresh and Truffle Seared Salmon. For three people, I'd say it's a decent amount of food without stuffing yourselves and having leftovers.

When I asked if the bento came with miso soup the waiter said no, but I could substitute the salad for miso soup instead, which I did. Surprised, since most bento boxes I've had include miso soup by default. The chicken was underwhelming lacked flavor, plus a lot of fatty, chewy bits and bone fragments. The crab rolls were basically a California roll with crab swapped in, no toppings, no sauce, nothing special. Ramen was decent, generous noodles, two pieces of pork, but pretty basic. Not sure if ownership or management changed since my last visit, but compared to my previous review, a lot feels different, makes me wonder if the food quality shifted too. Overall, not sure I'll be back anytime soon. Fine as a last resort if nothing else is open, but wouldn't go out of my way.

Been a year since my last update so thought I'd update my review!…read more They're open daily from 11am-7pm Love that they are expanding and the business next to them is going to turn into a place for dine in experience! How exciting! Parking can be difficult since it is pretty small and this spot is always busy regardless of the time and day! NOTE: You can only enter thru the back door by the parking lot because the front door is usually locked. Inside has such much variety of sushi, Japanese merchandise and groceries, as well as a fish market located all the way in the back. The fridges are packed with lots of variety of sushi and bowls. Love how you can choose any fish from the glass window and the staff will ask whether you want it sliced or not. The line is always long so be prepared to wait but it moves quite fast. Pricing is so reasonable and most of the sushi are $9+. Such a steal! Staff was friendly and welcoming. I used my SGV Food Passport and redeemed a free salmon avocado roll (or California Roll). What a deal! It came with 12 mini rolls packed with salmon and avocado. The salmon was so fresh and delicious! This is one of my favorite rolls there so glad I got it free! I also got the Unagi Sushi. It consisted of 12 mini eel rolls. It was stuffed with eel and packed with flavor. It tasted so yummy and fresh. Definitely one of my favorites! Last but not least, got the Nigiri! It consisted of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. This was my absolute favorite! It was so buttery and fresh. It literally melted in my mouth but how soft it was. The portion of fish was so generous and so good! Absolute must get! Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and my food so I'll definitely recommend and return.

I've been coming to Yama Seafood for over 25 years, going all the way back to my high school days…read moresince it was nearby. My mom and late dad knew the previous owner, Yamada-san, before I was born. I've introduced many of my friends to Yama Seafood over the years, and my friends and I would often come here after school to get sushi. Walking in here still brings back a lot of memories--especially from the days when you could enter directly from the street. In my opinion, Yama Seafood has some of the freshest fish and best selections in the area. There have been many times when I've purchased regular bluefin here and had friends think it was actually bluefin chu-toro because the quality was that good. My usual fish purchases are bluefin chu-toro, regular bluefin, salmon, Hokkaido scallops, and yellowtail. I also almost always grab a pack of California rolls, tamagoyaki, and ikura (salmon roe) to go with the fish. For the quality and selection of the fish, I would easily give Yama Seafood 5 stars. However, I'm not nearly as fond of the new ownership and management. I really preferred the feeling and customer service of the old Yama Seafood. Someone else in the reviews mentioned feeling the same way, and I completely understand where they're coming from. The old way was more personal. Yes, sometimes orders took a while because Yama-san himself was cutting and preparing the orders, but you knew who you were dealing with. If I had a question, I could ask Yama directly. If he wasn't available, I could ask the store manager, and they could get an answer from Yama. There was a direct connection between the customer and the person making the decisions. Now, unfortunately, it feels like Yama Seafood is being run like a corporation--100000%. The business expanded very quickly after the purchase, and it has become much more difficult to communicate with the actual decision-maker or owner. I was given the email addresses of the "boss" by the manager, and I've sent multiple emails but have never received a response. That's probably my biggest disappointment with the new management. Regardless of how a company is structured or who owns it, I think basic customer communication is important. When a longtime customer takes the time to reach out with a question or concern, especially after being directed to contact the person in charge, a simple response would go a long way. Maybe the new ownership simply has a different philosophy about customer service, or perhaps the business structure has changed significantly. Whatever the reason, the personal feeling that Yama Seafood used to have is unfortunately missing. That said, the fish quality and selection are still excellent, and that's the main reason I'm giving Yama Seafood 4 stars. I've been coming here for more than 25 years, and I genuinely want to see the business continue to do well. If the new management could improve its customer service--especially something as simple as responding to emails from longtime customers--I would have no hesitation giving this place 5 stars. The product is already there. It's the customer service and communication that need some work. And honestly, I don't care if the owners respond to this review just to "show face" on Yelp. I'm not looking for a public response or an apology. Just reply to the emails from your customers. Simple as that.
