This was a nice mom and pop restaurant. Limited hours and seating. Seating: 4 booths, 4 tables, and the rest is sushi bar seating for ~8 people but it's very tight so you are rubbing elbows with other parties seated at the sushi bar as well. It was a 45-hour wait to be seated. If you seat at sushi bar minimum 4 rolls per person. They are pretty quick to get your order, your drinks, and food. We ordered the Matsu sashimi plate, Matsu-sushi plate, and Mixed tempura. After the 45 minute wait we were pretty hungry so we slurped up the miso soup which was a nice balance of salty and tofu / seaweed bits. We also had a bowl of white rice to split. In all it was a pretty expensive purchase to still be hungry in another 2 hours but I'd say it was a positive experience. Tips: come immediately before they open to get in line otherwise expect to wait a while before you get seated so don't come starving otherwise you'll be hangry or want to skip all together for faster service because the seating is very small. Did I...just came across a local hidden gem?! I was looking for a restaurant I've never been to for lunch and decided to come here. There is plenty of street parking and limited parking lot in the back. I stopped by 10 mins before opening and there was already a line. I noticed the crowd is much older so this is probably a local's favorite. Suddenly it was a whole crowd coming into the restaurant at the same time. The waitresses must be overwhelmed! Despite having a full house and yes, service can be a bit slow, but they are very nice and polite. Food is good and price is affordable. Old school vibes. The only complaint I have is that rice is too clumpy and mushy. I absolutely enjoyed the potato salad on the side. I'm not sure if they are this busy everyday, if so, expect a wait. Small Japanese Restaurant which holds 46 people. We went on a Wednesday at 12:15pm. Found the last parking spot in the back and walked in to get seated. Place was packed but fortunately we were first in line and a table was just clearing. We were seated in 5 minutes. We heard good about this place so we wanted to give it a try. Service was great. Waitresses were very attentive to our needs and we were served very fast. I ordered the 2 combo lunch special Tempura and Salmon Teriyaki Plate ($20.00). It comes with miso soup to start. The miso was solid. The tempura was perfectly made. Crunchy texture and juicy in the inside. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the rich oily skin was wonderful. I think I found a winner. The technique at Taihei are meticulous, meaning in my opinion each piece of sushi and roll is made with such skill and precision. Beautifully presented sushi. Not a high-end sushi spot, but their quality ingredients are apparent at Taihei. Japanese comfort food that are not from the sushi bar are also available. Delicious teriyaki, tempura, hotpot (nabe), sukiyaki, bento combos are what comes to mind. The restaurant is small and a busy establishment, so plan accordingly. ** Closed on Monday/Tuesday. Took my wife here for our anniversary and the food was some of the best Japanese cuisine I had in a long time. I had the six piece nigiri with tuna roll while the wife had the tempura/salmon bento. Each of us also ordered a hand roll that we liked and enjoyed a plum wine together. Then, I ordered a salmon roll and spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna was delicious. But, the salmon in the salmon roll was a little fishy. The katsu don was also good. The bowl is like 75% rice but the katsu was still a large portion. I just didn't end up eating all of the rice cause there was so much. Once we got seated, service picked up. Easily the most authentic sushi experience in town with ambiance that takes you back about two decades. Inside the charming establishment, are about 4 4-seater booths, 3 4 seater tabletops, and of course the bar seats to behold the work of the two sushi chefs we had today. The uni is by far the best uni I've ever had, maintaining gelatinous form but disintegrating palpably in your mouth upon tasting, almost as if taken fresh from the uni there and then. Additionally, the toro belly was incredibly fresh, and the house wasabi tucked between the bed of rice and fish complemented the flavors nicely. The masago for our rainbow roll was inside the roll itself, which was a nice little flair I was unaccustomed to. A surprising star of the show was the beef duo sukiyaki, with its mixture of carrots, white onion, tofu, cabbage, and rich slices of beef provided a nice warm touch to our meal. Came here with family to celebrate a birthday. My one family member was in a wheelchair. It's a tiny restaurant, so it's a bit of tight squeeze getting her in/out, but the staff was so very kind and helpful in getting us through the experience. Tip: if you will also bring someone with mobility challenges, I highly recommend having someone ask the staff to let them through the backdoor. They are very accommodating and you will not have to overcome the incline at the front door. We each enjoyed our sukiyaki and chirashi-zushi. My uni nigiri was so plump and just melted. Good stuff. We waited about 25 min on a Friday night (checked in around 7:15). We were probably #6 on the list. Well worth the wait. Such kind and helpful staff. We were so full afterwards. But we didn't feel icky--we felt satisfied. This is probably a minute detail but we really loved their daikon and ginger here. They tasted fresh and packed with flavor. With the attention they give to these small sides, needless to say, the fish and rice were amazing. We are huge sushi fans but we eat the hot Japanese dishes as well. First and foremost, I always had a great meal at Taihei. I have been there twice before and enjoyed the food and service in the past; going today was a treat to look forward to after a long day. Granted, it was a full house, however, being third to enter the restaurant and twelfth to be served was NOT an experience worth having, especially after a busy day. Food: Had the 2 item bento; tempura and tonkatsu. The tempura was wonderfully fried and not oily to the taste. The surprising piece was the bell pepper; it had a nice flavor and almost tasted like a mild crispy chile relleno. The tonkatsu was moist and flavorful and the sauce had a fantastic tang to it. Absolutely perfect. The side of Japanese-style potato salad is exceedingly delicious with a creaminess and a bit of pickle that made every bite most welcome. The Ambiance: The original look is timeless on the inside. There are five booths and about six tables, so space is limited and it is not hard to keep track of everyone at a glance. The Service: The original server who handed the menu was the same one who opened the door at five. The rest of the staff welcomed the small line and seats were a first-come, first served basis. The waiter put down utensils and napkins and left. It was ten minutes after the last guest arrived that the waiter took the order, after taking orders from those who barely walked in, which was approximately 15-20 minutes overall. It was another twenty minutes until another staff member came to ask if the miso soup was served, which it was not. Waters came five minutes later, and the experienced staff member who asked about the miso soup was apologetic. It was the experienced staff member who apologized for the lateness of the service, and her alone; this was a testament to her sincerity and professionalism. For this, I do hope they give her a raise, as she was genuinely mortified that the booth and customer were overlooked while others were being served, and even some customers leaving after paying their checks. Worse yet, I was not the only one waiting for service or food. Yet, even they got served before me. It is very understandable that this may be an isolated incident, but the professionalism and experience needed today can be commonly found in bars, izakayas, and any place that has a high customer turnover and customer satisfaction. You queue up, you sit, you get served accordingly. Staff know who came in, get them served, customer enjoys the meal, and they leave. The only appropriate time for a customer to be waiting would be for prep and cooking time. Not a hard concept. It would be an immense improvement if the staff kept an eye and kept track of the customers, attended to them as they sat as to keep track of the order of service, and have been consistent in ensuring customers get served according to when they arrive. Perhaps going 45 minutes after they open may provide a better experience, when the rush is over. Their food is worth that wait. read more
