Hubby likes picking up sandwiches from here after his haircut. This most recent time, I called in an order for five sandwiches right around lunch time and the person who took my order was friendly, polite and patient. Even though they sounded really busy, the person repeated my order back to me to make sure they had it correct. All of us usually get the Tony's Hot Pastrami, but I didn't want something too heavy so got the BLT on rye instead. A tip for the hot pastrami is to order it lightly toasted. Otherwise, the meat comes out too toasted and hard. Portions seem smaller than they used to be but sandwiches are still delicious and satisfying! read more

Was in the area so I went in to grab a sandwich. I got there a little before noon and the place was pretty empty when I went inside but very clean and the workers were friendly most of the sandwiches are around $11-15 and they have some grilled items as well. Got the chicken pesto which was the weekly special and brought it back home to eat. It was still warm when I got back and the sandwich was amazing! The chicken wasn't dry at all and was grilled up well. The pesto was super garlicky and delicious. It got a little messy because of the oil but well worth all the napkins. I wish I got another sandwich just so I could relive that moment again the sandwich isn't a giant sub but I'm quite satisfied with the portion. Would definitely go back to try more sandwiches from here! read more

A friend of mine turned me on to this place. He used to be a regular. He's retired now so he "passed the torch" to me today. I'm happy to report this is a great spot worthy of your patronage. We both had the pastrami sandwich. I thought it was excellent. They come out of the oven hot and toasted with melted cheese. Flavor is excellent. They had a decent lunch time crowd but one of the workers was telling us after the place emptied out that they lost almost all of their business with FedEx, Mercedes and something else moving out after the pandemic. This is such a great place to grab lunch. I work from home and usually eat leftovers but there are times when there is no leftovers and I like to walk over to AK subs. I usually get the Philly cheesesteak and it just warms the soul. The price for the subs here is great and this place has a lot of regulars that keep on coming because of the subs and prices. The Philly costs about 13 dollars and you can't find that kind of deal in the city. They also are on doordash if it's to far to walk. I will be going back and I recommend this place to everyone who is looking for good lunch deals. read more

Had never heard of this place before but I was craving a good burger and/or cheesesteak so I ordered pick up! We live nearby in Hayes Valley so it was easy. We got the burger, added avocado, and the philly with added mushrooms. Also got a side of fries and a smoothie. Everything was good, the cheesesteak def stood out, it had provolone but also some other sort of cheese or sauce that was white and tasted heavenly! The burger was also solid, cooked a perfect medium rare with good flavor and a good bun. Needed sauce tho. Only thing that wasn't great were the fries. They were close to closing so maybe that's why but they tasted like they'd been sitting out for 3 hours and reheated before serving. Just not good. I'm sure they're better fresh tho. read more

Pretty good pastrami sandwiches! Found this spot on Doordash. I love that they don't skimp on the pickles and meat. The pastrami was good quality and well-seasoned; not too salty. The bread wasn't amazing though. I got Tony's Hot Pastrami on rye. It was difficult to bite since the bread was really tough. Overall, a decent pastrami - but not worth the hefty price. In n out in less than a minute. From reading the reviews I learned that the way to access the parking lot was to take Harrison and stay in the far right lane while approaching 8th. I had called in my order 15 mins earlier. Pulled right into the lot. The kind gentleman told me to enter through their back entrance (right side of lot through black mesh curtain) I proceeded past the kitchen to the counter where my delicious sandwiches were calling to me. Friendly service behind masked staff and I was back to my car in under a minute. Process was perfect as was our early dinner. We will return to try out the other good eats on the menu. read more

I work near SOMA. Around here, unfortunately there are not many places for lunch. Its very limited. What ends up happening is if I don't bring my lunch to work, I end up going to the same places over and over again! However, I don't mind going to AK Subs atleast once a week. They have a variety of different quality and hefty sandwiches that are great for lunch. I believe over the course of 10 years, I've tried almost all the sandwiches. My favorite? The Pastrami w/ Swiss. Lots of juicy Pastrami and full of flavor. The melted Swiss adds to the sandwich. The Philly sandwich is my second favorite. But everything here is pretty good. Friendly staff, social distancing and indoor and outdoor dining. Parking can be difficult. read more

Ordered the BBQ beef and Tony's Hot Pastrami. For the BBQ beef, the sweet roll was toasted and crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. The beef was very tender but the BBQ sauce overwhelmed the overall sandwich. The sauce instead of complimenting the sandwich, obliterated the taste profile of the sandwich by masking the taste of the fresh roast beef to a tangy savory sauce. I accidentally ordered from here rather than AK Meats near my house. Not sure if these places are connected but they can't be more different. The people at "Meats" are friendly, treat you like family and offer amazing items made to order and pre-made. "Subs" is a whole different story. It's a hole in the wall in Soma and when I got there, they had my order ready which was good. They mistakenly gave me a Cherry Coke rather than a Root Beer and when I said "this is cherry coke" she snapped back saying "we don't have cherry coke (twice)". I know what cherry coke tastes like and somehow you gave cherry coke to me then wanted to argue. She then gave me the correct drink which was siting on the counter and it was over syruppy. I got a water instead. The burger wasn't bad. Basically a slightly better version of a whopper. Nice char taste but the ratio of bun to burger was off. A double would be better if they offer that. The fries sucked too. Over cooked and tasted like they were re-cooked. Never again read more

Waited 20 minutes for my sub. Everyone kept being called but me. Turns out they never made it. The cooks deer in the headlights look didn't help my frustration. I had been a long-time customer of AK Subs going back close to 15 years. The owner who works the register recognizes me when I come in. On the last day I patronized AK Subs I had an hour for lunch and happened to be in the area. It was a weekday. There were a few customers inside but not the kind of crowd that they used to have before the pandemic. I ordered a pastrami sandwich which she called out to the sandwich maker who I had seen pretty much every time I had ever been there. He got a few other orders at the same time and evidently got swamped even though it was like 4 sandwiches total. I sat and waited an excessive amount of time, over 20 minutes, to the point where I thought about leaving. I went up and asked where my food was, and she told me it was coming. I waited longer. By then it had been about half an hour. Finally, my name was called. I went up to get my sandwich and it was the wrong sandwich with cold cuts instead of pastrami and not hot. I told her I got the wrong sandwich and she apologized. The sandwich maker gave me an angry look. I was about to leave but she told me no problem, they can rush out the correct order. I relented and said okay, I'll stay. Another 15 minutes went by and still my name was never called. I felt stupid that I had waited that long but by then I was very hungry. She asked the sandwich maker about it who again gave me angry look. He told her that he never started making it. I still had no food after 45 minutes. I couldn't have stayed any longer even if I had wanted to. I told her how I had wasted my whole hour, the entirety of the time I had to eat for the whole day. She refunded my money and offered me an apple as compensation. I felt like she should have offered me a free sandwich or something for wasting my whole lunch hour and leaving me hungry. I also didn't appreciate the hostile attitude. I had also previously seen her husband who works in the kitchen acting angrily on more than one occasion. Considering the service and hostility, I no longer recommend AK Subs. read more

TBH, I don't really know what an authentic hot pastrami sandwich tastes like, but when I tried it here, I was like, oh this is probably it. Huge. Juicy. Salty, but so incredibly meaty. Wow. We had dual hot pastrami's, mine on crunch roll and my compatriot's on sourdough. Sooo good. Very substantial, I made it through 3/4 of it. Thinly sliced, no chewy fat that often plagues pastrami, not too salty or overpowering with the bread crunch so satisfying. good foot traffic during covid, a small and a good eat in area in the back but most opted to take away.
